Introduction:

Venba is narrative cooking game, which sounds like a very odd mixture but actually works very well. It comes from independent developer Visai Games. It tells the story of Venba, a wife and mother who moves from South India to Canade, in the late 1980s. She is accompanied by her husban, Paavalan, and they soon have a child, Kavin.

The game has you cooking a series of dishes, and the cooking serves as a kind of portal to the past. Venba, reminisces about her mother’s recipe book, and she uses cooking as a way to strengthen her connection to her roots. Most of the game has you following some occasionally tricky recipes and following the arc of the story as you do. The trophies are, for the most part, pretty much unmissable and very easy. But there are one or two little tricky ones. Let’s jump in.

Walkthrough:

Step One: Play through the game
A full playthrough of Venba will take just under two hours, and it will also unlock most of the trophies. In the course of the story, you will cook a string of dishes. Put Chutney trophy_bronze.png, Agni Prithvi Puttu trophy_gold.png, Hair off the Head trophy_gold.png, Family Beef trophy_gold.png, Arambikalama? trophy_gold.png, Taking Stock trophy_gold.png, and Fermented Feelings trophy_gold.png are all part of the story – impossible to miss.

If you want to make the most of the one playthrough, then be sure to read the background information on each dish you make, so you unlock the Flavor Text trophy_silver.png trophy. Also, be sure to scroll to the top of any phone chats that you come across, the better to unlock Doomscroll trophy_silver.png and Silicon Heartbreak trophy_silver.png.

Step Two: Mop-Up
The great thing for the trophy-hungry is that Venba lets you replay any of the seven chapters after you finish the story. It's here that you can go after the likes of Vada Poche trophy_silver.png, where you fail at the last part of a recipe, and Annanukku oru Oothappammm! trophy_gold.png, where you simply don't add chillies to the finished product. For the Like it was Yesterday trophy_silver.png and Queen of the Six Tastes trophy_gold.png, both of which entail not messing up at all, you will either have to memorise the recipes or just follow this guide in order to nail them all.

Conclusion:
Not a difficult – or particularly imaginative – list, by any stretch. Really, Venba just requires a good, thorough playthrough of the story, with some light, chapter-replaying mop-up.

16 trophies ( 5  )

  • Obtain all of the Trophies.

Read everything, cook everything without messing up, and do some careful mopping, and this fairly easy platinum is yours!
  • Successfully make idlis.

You can’t miss this one; it’s the first dish you make in the story. But idlis are fiddly. You have to add the water into the bottom of the pan before you do anything else. Then, put a towel on each dish, then the batter. (This stops them from dripping.) Also, you have to rotate each dish in the pan, so that the holes line up, before slotting the next dish in on top. Bingo!
  • Successfully “Launch” puttu.

The trick to this one is to blend the rice multiple times. Blend, then sieve, then blend the leftover chunks; sieve again, blend again. Eventually, you have a big-enough pile of mixture to add to the water. Once you’ve done that, all you need to do then is spoon in the mixtures in this order: coconut, flour, flour, coconut, flour, flour, coconut.
  • Launch a crumbling puttu.

    Missable.

This trophy is unlocked by getting the order of the puttu wrong. As in Agni Prithvi Puttu trophy_gold.png, you go about your sieving-and-blending routine, but, when you get to the second part, you reverse the ratios of coconut and flour. Go for flour, coconut, coconut, flour, coconut, coconut, flour. The result will crumble – a failed rocket launch, but one worth a trophy_silver.png.
  • Complete the park level.

This one is unmissable. All you have to do is complete the scene in the park, wherein Venba and Kavin walk and talk. You get a good chunk of backstory, and you can choose which questions Kavin will ask his mother.
  • Successfully make the biriyani.

This one is a little tricky. It has to do mainly the order that you add the ingredients. Onions first, then garlic powder, then the chillies, and then the tomatoes. In the second part, you need to scoop out some gravy, add some rice, then re-add the scooped-out gravy, then more rice, and then everything else on top – in any order.
  • Make the dinner spread.

This one is unmissable, as all you can do is follow the onscreen directions. Still, you can admire the artwork of all the ingredients and dishes as you unlock an easy trophy_gold.png!
  • Successfully finish cooking the Chicken Rasam.

This one is impossible not to get. You just have to follow Kavin's rather scrambled instructions. The twist here is that he is trying to translata Venba's recipe, and he slightly muddles certain words. “Green chillies and leaves,” for example, is actually red chillies and green leaves. Still, this is easy enough.
  • Successfully finish cooking the Dosas.

This one is unmissable, and, actually, there aren’t really any wrinkles to the recipe, either. Venba teaches Kavin the art of making Dosas, and, rather helpfully, she stands over his shoulder and advises him at every turn. Just listen to her wisdom!
  • Complete one recipe without messing up.

    Missable.

You will pop this one easily if you follow any of the guides in this walkthrough before experimenting yourself. Also, the second step in Agni Prithvi Puttu trophy_gold.png, where you have to “launch the rocket” will probably pop this for you, as it’s pretty tough to screw up – especially if you followed this guide!
  • Complete every recipe without messing up once.

    Missable.

This one you can either get by following this guide, like a sneaky cheat, or through sheer force of culinary genius. Or, most likely, by playing the game again and remembering how to pull off each dish. Remember, cooking is about confidence (and also repetition)!

Secret trophies

  • Read all the texts in Venba's phone.

    Missable.

After Venba cooks the dinner spread for which you unlocked Arambikalama? trophy_gold.png, she gets a pretty heartbreaking message from Kavin. Once you have read the message, don’t press cross.png and continue to the next screen. Instead scroll lsn.png to the top of the chat, then back lss.png to the bottom. Then you can press cross.png, and, once the cutscene if finished, you will unlock this trophy.
  • Real all the texts in Kavin's phone.

    Missable.

When Kavin’s friend Kris is asking him for a dish to feature in a show that he is producing, the two carry out a conversation over text. Once the chat plays out, you then have a chance to scroll up lsn.png and read through their chat history. It’s good for a little context on their friendship and also for a swift trophy_silver.png.
  • Make an oothappam without chillies.

    Missable.

Once you’ve put together the dosas, as you do to get Fermented Feelings trophy_gold.png, you then get the chance to make oothappam. Venba will explain that, in this part of the process, it’s up to you how you flavour it and what ingredients you throw in. Simply don’t include the chillies to unlock this trophy.
  • Read the flavor text in every level.

    Missable.

Whenever you make any of the recipes, press triangle.png and click the middle option on the pop-up menu. This always gives you some background information on the dish that you’re making. Plus, Venba gives us a little family history in some of the snippets.
  • Get Silicon Heartbreak, Doomscroll, Flavor text achievements.

    Missable.

Paavalan is a writer, so he would doubtless approve of you being rather bookish in your play style. See Doomscroll trophy_silver.png, Silicon Heartbreak trophy_silver.png, and Flavor Text trophy_silver.png.
