Introduction:

Total Recoil is a twin sticks shooter for the Playstation Vita, you play a soldier with little to no story at all, you complete challenges to work your way up through the army to reach the rank of General of the Army. This game is no where the intensity of a Super Stardust or Dead Nation, it's actually a fairly easy game.

There are three terrain types when choosing a mission, which are all the same and that's just to kill all the enemies, Train Yard, Oil Rig and Mighty Jungle. These are mostly for aesthetics, however some enemy types can only be found in certain terrain. While clearing levels you are given a set of three challenges to complete, when you fulfill those requirements you are awarded a star - earn enough stars and you move up a rank. To reach General of the Army you need to reach rank 18.

Walkthrough:

Step 1: First you want to do is just play the game up to Mission D.6 which is your first encounter with a Quatro Pounder - do not bother grinding this stage five times because various challenges will have you coming back to kill this enemy multiple times.

Step 2: Continue completing challenges on the appropriate missions, some mention you must be in certain terrain types or defeat specific "boss" type enemies. While clearing waves try to kill every enemy in those waves, this will be helpful for the trophies Invincible, Shield and Medic because you are awarded one of those random boosts or killstreak rewards at the end of any fully cleared wave - you also get bonus money. See below for the easiest way to clear all challenges as well as other general tips.

Tips to getting Prestige faster: After you reach "General of the Army" for the first time you will be given the option to start all over again, similar to Jetpack Joyride.

1. Upgrade to level 2 or 3 of coin magnet, I found quite often that many coins were way off the walking path, you can tap on the screen to collect them but it’s just infinitely easier to collect them this way - Ratchet and Clank style.

2. Upgrade your Flamer to the max, it can kill enemies through crates and indestructible boxes and has a very nice range.

3. If you are going to die on a level, don’t spend your coin giving yourself a 1UP, that’s a waste because when you die you keep your kills and money and can just restart with no penalty.

4. If you are in offline mode avoid going to the in-game shop, it sometimes hangs for a few minutes while trying to connect because it looks like they wanted to have micro-transactions but have not yet implemented them, it's annoying to wait but you eventually get in.

15 trophies ( 13  )

  • Reach the rank of General of the Army.

    See Prestige

  • Reach 10000 kills in total.

This should come naturally while going for Prestige. All enemies count towards this unlike many challenges which contain the term "only soldiers".

  • Achieve an "Outstanding" kill combo 100 times.

An Outstanding combo denotes you killing 6 enemies without getting hit and in rapid succession, if you use my Flamer tactic it will be that much easier. I did not have trouble getting this well before the Annihilator trophy. Below is a video on mission A.4 which is a good farming spot for most of the challenges:

  • Reach the rank of General of the Army for a second time.

The title says it all. There are 18 ranks to earn whilst going for General of the Army (which you have to do twice) and to surpass each rank you will need to complete challenges based around killing X amount of enemies with a certain weapon or destroying crates and barrels. Most of the challenges and simple but the few I had trouble with I used my extra coin to "buy them out", which opens a new challenge and awards you the star for the one you skipped. The cost to skip varies from 1000 all the way up to 100000.

  • Blow up 5000 wooden crates.

This should come through your natural progression as it's hard to avoid destroying crates, they also contain coins.

  • Blow up 1500 red barrels.

This is the same as Kindling. Red barrels explode which help kill enemies and destroy nearby crates, they also contain coins inside.

  • Upgrade any weapon, killstreak or item to the max.

My suggestion is to upgrade the Flamer first, the Assault Rifle is also a good weapon. The most helpful Killstreaks are Artillery Strike and Tank, the most helpful items are Coin Magnet and Speed - it helps greatly by getting to enemies faster and keeping that killstreak up.

  • Use 20 Invincibility power ups on yourself.

    See Medic

  • Use 30 Shields to protect yourself.

    See Medic

  • Use 50 Medipacks to heal yourself.

Medic, Invincible and Shield require you to use various amounts of boosts which can be purchased in the shop, however, they can also be earned by clearing a wave within the given time. It doesn't matter if you earn a pickup or purchase them it all goes toward the same count, try and save your coin for upgrades but feel free to play how you want because these trophies will come before your first "General of the Army".

  • Shoot down 20 flying planes.

Flying planes can only be found on locations named "The Oil Rig", one of the first of which being missions A.6, you only see about 2 per missions there is no need to farm them as this trophy come naturally by completing challenges.

  • Destroy 5 of the big track quatro pounder tanks

The first encounter with The Quatro Pounder is in mission D.6, you don't need to beat other missions to get 100% since this is really the only "boss" specific kill trophy.

  • Buy all of the weapons.

There are seven weapons and all of them have challenges to purchase them and get various kills with them, you should buy these on your way to "General of the Army". Killstreaks and Equipment do not need to be purchased for this trophy.

    - Assault Rifle
    - Flamer
    - Chaingun
    - Cannon
    - Tesla Gun
    - Grenade Launcher
    - Hammerhead

  • Upgrade any weapon for the first time.

This will come very early on around the same time as the tutorial.

  • Complete the Boot Camp tutorial mission.

The first step in any military branch is Boot Camp, you will learn the basics of how to play the game.
