Gameplay and General Tips

Introduction:

The Escapists: The Walking Dead is a follow up release to the original indie game The Escapists developed by Mouldy Toof studios. It combines all the familiar elements from the 8-bit world game with the global phenomenon that is The Walking Dead. You play as Rick Grimes, of of the main characters from the comic book series, through a number of comic-inspired locations such as the Greene Family Farm and Alexandria. The storyline closely follows that of the first series of the comic book. The gameplay is very similar to The Escapists, with the familiar daily routines and crafting of weapons and tools, except this time you need to contend with hordes of the undead.

The trophy list is very straight forward for this game with no missable trophies. A large proportion of them are story related or will naturally unlock as you play through the game. If you are familiar with The Escapists, than this game won’t be very difficult. You are looking at a single playthrough of all five levels, plus a small amount of cleaning up via chapter select to obtain collectibles and craft certain weapons. Collectibles and crafted items save immediately so you can quite out of a level once you have cleaned up whatever you need to do. If you are new to this series of games, then I suggest you check at the post here for details and tips on gameplay: LINK. There is a single glitched trophy which you may or may not have some trouble with unlocking so please refer to the note below.

Glitched trophy

Some people have reported having trouble unlocking the A Different Approach trophy. This has something to do with the game not registering that you have worn either the Riot Gear or the Zombie Make Up Kit. However, you can get around this my playing through a few more days via level selecting the corresponding levels in which each item is found. More information is provided in the trophy description.

Stability Warning

The Woodbury level is incredibly unstable and prone to crashing at random, to the point it's very difficult to actually complete. See here for more details: LINK

Walkthrough:

Step 1: Complete all five levels of the game

For this step, simply play the game and finish all five levels. In order to unlock the next level you must successfully escape/complete the preceding level. Feel free to work towards any other trophy whilst playing but these can all be quickly obtained post game with level select. The levels are fairly straight forwards with clear objectives to follow so you shouldn't have too much trouble. It may be worthwhile having a look at the list of weapons required to be crafted for the Crafty Rick trophy and work on each one as you progress through each level, just remember to keep a note of which ones you have crafted.

A lot of trophies can be obtained in the second level, Greene Family Farm. This includes No Casualties , Vendor Spender and On The Move . As such I suggest reading the requirements of each and focusing on them during this level to save having to do a complete second playthrough of the level if you fail to unlock them in the later levels.

At the end of this step you will have unlocked the following trophies:

Survive Greene Family Farm
Get Out Of Jail
Unfinished Business
No Stone Unturned
No Casualties
Walker Stalker
A Different Approach GLITCHED
Vendor Spender
On The Move
Safety First
Back From The Dead

Step 2: Obtain all collectibles

In total there are 24 collectibles across the five levels that you will need to collect. These come in the form of volumes of The Walking Dead comic book. Feel free to pick any up that you come across in Step 1, otherwise you can easily obtain them via level select. You can see how many collectibles you have obtained from each level at the level select screen.

At the end of this step you will have unlocked the following trophies:

The Collector
Hobyist

Step 3: Miscellaneous trophy clean up

Depending on how much you focused on the miscellaneous trophies in the game during the two previous steps, you shouldn't have many remaining trophies. Once you finish each level then you can replay it from your last save point before you escaped/finished it. You will likely still need to craft numerous guns and melee weapons and potentially kill more zombies for the Dead Busy! trophy.

At the end of this step you will have unlocked the following trophies:

Dead Busy
Weapon Expert
Feed The World!
All I Want Is My Radio!
Crafty Rick
First Place Walker
Rick’s Legacy

  • Unlock all trophies

"In a world ruled by the dead, we are forced to finally start living".
    - Rick Grimes - The Walking Dead, Vol. 01: Days Gone Bye

Congratulations, you have overcome the undead and managed to earn yourself the Platinum trophy.

  • Clear out the barn of walkers and reach Dale’s RV safely.

    Story related, cannot be missed.

In order to unlock this trophy you need to complete level two, Greene Family Farm. This level is quite short and there aren’t many objectives you need to complete. You will want to spend the first couple of days hitting the gym to increase your strength, as well as reading books to increase your intelligence. The objectives required to complete the level are as follows:

    • Speak to Carl and Hershel at Carl's bed which is directly west of the area in which you eat your meals.
    • Hershel will task you with crafting an Operating Kit. The recipe for this is Purifier + Bandages + Forceps. The game will guide you to the location of each of these items. Once you have all three, craft the Operating Kit and give it to Hershel.
    • After further discussions with Hershel your next task is to investigate the barn and kill all the zombies inside. The barn is located east of the area in which you have the Head Count each day. The game tells you to equip your fellow survivors with weapons and armour to help with the fight, however it is much easier if you just fight the zombies yourself (see below for tips). Once you have killed all the zombies, search the rucksack at the back to find a red key which will unlock the door at the back of the barn. Now all you need to do is walk along the path to Dale's RV. Once you reach it the level will be complete and the trophy will unlock.

    General tips for barn fight:

    • At the risk of having fellow survivors die and missing an easy opportunity to obtain the No Casualties trophy, it's recommended to fight the zombies on your own.
    • Having high strength is critical as this will make killing zombies a lot easier, and will also increase your health. Lift weights at the gym to increase your strength. In addition to this, find yourself a good weapon such as the Sword or Nunchucks (Wood + Wood + File).
    • Equip yourself with some Heavy Armour (Metal Plate + Duct Tape). This will further increase your overall health.
    • Lure the zombies out one by one from the barn. If you attempt to fight multiple zombies at once you will be killed very quickly.
  • Successfully complete Meriwether County Correctional Facility

    Story related, cannot be missed.

In order to unlock this trophy you need to complete level three, Meriwether Correctional Facility. This level is a little harder than the previous level as there are more zombies and there are more objectives in which you will need to complete. As with all other levels, spend the first couple of days increasing your strength and intelligence. This will help you to kill zombies a lot easier as well as craft better weapons. The objectives required to complete the level are as follows:

    • You first need to locate the Generator, which is at the northern end of the level. An arrow will be displayed on the screen indicating the location of the Generator. Once you find it you will need to get inside. To do this you need to craft a Makeshift Ladder (Tin Of Paint + Tin Of Paint + Tin Of Paint). Two tins of paint can be found in the rucksack near the generator building, the third can be found in random locations (desks, rucksacks etc) in the level.
    • Once you have crafted the ladder, place it in the small building with the ventilation system just south of the generator. Climb up into the ventilation system and cut through the grates using pliers or a screwdriver.
    • The next step is to find the blue key. This is located in a building on the western side of the level. You will need a Crowbar to break down a wall to get access to the room. The following image shows the location of the desk in which the blue key is located:

    • After you have the blue key all that is required of you is to follow the objectives. You firstly need to steal two Riot Gear Kits from the Armory and then give one of them to Glenn. After that, you then need to craft the Siphoning Kit (Jerry Can + Tubing). Both of these required items can be found randomly in desks and rucksacks throughout the level.
    • The final objective of the level is to siphon fuel from cars in the car park. The car park is located in the south western corner of the level. There are lots of zombies here so I suggest you give Glenn a good weapon and make sure you are both wearing your Riot Gear as it drastically increase your health. Once you have filled the Jerry Can with fuel the level will be complete and the trophy will unlock.
  • Allow Michonne to deal with the Governor then successfully escape Woodbury.

    Story related, cannot be missed.

In order to unlock this trophy you need to complete level four, Woodbury. Although Woodbury seems like a complicated level due to its size and the number of zombies, it is quite easy to escape from. In addition to the zombies, there are also numerous guards that patrol the level and some are equipped with powerful guns. There is no daily routine in this level so you are free to do whatever you like for the entire duration of the day.

As per usual, spend the first few days increasing your strength and finding/crafting a strong weapon and some armour. You will need to fight a lot of zombies in the level, as well as armoured guards so be sure you are ready for a lot of fights. The objectives required to complete the level are as follows:

    • Your first objective will be to rescue Michonne who is being held captive in a cell at the northern end of the level. Her location is shown by an arrow on the screen. The easiest way to free her is to break through the wall behind her with a Crowbar. You can easily reach this location by heading around the perimeter of the level in either a clockwise or anticlockwise direction from your starting location. Once she is free, bring her back to the safe location and press to make her stop following you.
    • Your next objective is to obtain the Purple Key which you will need to rescue Glenn. The Purple Key can be found in the building East of Michonne's location where you will need to break down the wall at the northern side of the building just to the left of the Purple door, this is easiest done with a Crowbar. Head South and into the small room with a desk and a zombie. The key is found in the desk. The following image depicts this location.

    • Once you have the Purple Key, your next objective is to free rescue Glenn who is being held captive in a cell on the eastern side of the level. From the starting area of the level, exit through the gate on the eastern side and keep heading east. You will come to Glenn's cell which is blocked by a Purple door and a Yellow door. Use the Purple Key you recently obtained to get through the purple door, then break down the wall next to the Yellow door with a Crowbar to get into Glenn's cell. Once you rescue him, take him back to the safe area where Michonne is located.
    • Now it is time to escape but first you need to deal with the Governor. Make Glenn and Michonne follow you by pressing on them. Now make your way to the Governors location which will be displayed on the map. Once you get there, Michonne will deal with him and now you will need to escape. You can escape through the metal fence on the eastern side of the level by cutting it with pliers. Once you are through the level will be complete and the trophy will unlock. The following image depicts the location of the metal fence in which you need to escape through.

  • Successfully guide Carl to safety from Alexandria.

    Story related, cannot be missed.

In order to unlock this trophy you need to complete the fifth and final level, Alexandria. This level is quite large and unlike previous levels, you are your fellow survivors are not completely safe from zombies. In order to reach different areas to complete group activities, you will need to walk past zombies. As such, be prepared to help your fellow survivors if they happen to get into a fight. As with previous levels, spend the first couple of days building your strength and intelligence and finding useful items to craft weapons etc.
Your first step is to obtain the Blue key, this is found in a small building locked by a blue door on the Eastern side of the level. In order to gain access to this building, you need to enter the building to the west and place a desk below the ventilation system and climb onto the roof. Once on the roof, climb along the rope to the east and drop down into the backyard of the building and enter it to find the Blue key in a rucksack. The following images show the location in which to place the desk to climb into the ventilation system, then the location in which to drop from the rope into the backyard of the building with the Blue key inside:

    • Once you have the Blue key, your next step is to obtain the Red key. The red key is found in the rucksack in the building north of where you complete the metal sheet group activity. It is located behind a locked red door in a rucksack. There are a few ways in which you can reach this rucksack. Head East towards the lake in the middle of the level and just to East of its location, you will see a building with a room that contains an ammunition storage box. You will want to dig under the wall and enter this room. The following image shows this location:

Once inside, climb on the desk and enter the ventilation system. You will need a screwdriver to cut the grates to get inside. Once you are on the roof, follow the zipline to the South and then again to the West. This will put you on the roof of the building with the Red Key. Climb down inside and search the Rucksack to find the Red key.

    • Now that you have the Purple and Red Keys, you need to craft two Zombie Make Up Kits. This requires two Plastic Sheets. The first of which is located on the roof of the building in which you start the level in. In order to get there, enter the Northern most building on the western side of the level. Once inside head to the bottom left hand room and climb into the ventilation system and enter the roof. The following image shows this location. Once you are on the roof, take the zipline all the way to the South to the roof of the starting building then search the rucksack to find the Plastic Sheet:

    • The second Plastic Sheet is located in the North Eastern building. You will need the Red Key, Blue Key and a Shovel. Enter the building and make your way to the bedroom in the bottom right corner. Kill the zombies and you will find a partially dug hole. Continue digging the hole and then enter to find a rucksack with the Plastic Sheet inside. The location of the building and the hole is shown in the following image:

    • Now we are ready for the escape. Craft two Zombie Make Up Kits (Plastic Sheet + Zombie Entrails). The Zombie Entrails can be found by looting the bodies of killed zombies. Give one of the Zombie Make Up Kits to Carl and get him to follow you by pressing on him. The exit of the level is on the Eastern side, which will be displayed by the objective marker. Only equip the Make Up kit when you are close as they don't last forever. Now just walk through the zombies to the exit to finish the level and unlock the trophy. There are a lot of zombies in this location so a distraction device (Working Radio = Battery + Depleted Radio) can prove very useful.
  • Seek out all of the 24 volumes of The Walking Dead.

There are a total of 24 collectibles which you will need to find across the five levels of the game, including the Tutorial level. Collectibles come in the form of the first 24 volumes of The Walking Dead comic. Each collectible is always found inside a rucksack in specific locations in each level. Once you collect one, it is automatically saved so it doesn’t matter if you die or quit the game. For a complete text, picture and video walkthrough of all 24 volumes of The Walking Dead comic in the game, please refer to my Guide Supplement found here: LINK.

  • Complete any level without having any survivor being downed.

In each of the four levels in the game (excluding the tutorial level) you will be accompanied by fellow survivors. These survivors represent the different characters found in The Walking Dead comics e.g. Glenn, Maggie, Carl etc. and each will carry out the same daily tasks as you and will go about their own activities in each level. In order for them to get downed, they need to be beaten up/attacked by a zombie. If their health bar is depleted they will be downed and you won't be able to obtain the trophy during the playthrough of that level. Besides the final level, Alexandria, survivors will only be attacked if their threat level increases to high or make them follow you to unsafe areas of the level.

The second level, Green Family Farm, is the easiest in which to go for this trophy because the level is short with a relatively small number of zombies. The zombies will not enter the safe area of the farm and unlike some of the later levels, you will not need to use any of the survivors to help fight any zombies thus reducing the chance of them being downed. Note this trophy cannot be obtained after completing the first level as you are not accompanied by any survivors.

Below are some general tips which you can use across all levels of the game to reduce the chance of any survivors being downed:

    • Always follow the daily schedule of activities. If you miss an activity e.g. lunch, head count or a job, then the threat level will increase. The threat level is indicated by the percentage value in the top right corner of the screen and if it does increase, then you can lower it by following the schedule of activities. If it gets too high then zombies will start to enter the secure areas of the level and attack the survivors. The current activity of the daily routine is displayed at the top of the screen.
    • You can arm fellow survivors by giving them weapons, press on them and then select a weapon from your inventory. If they happen to get in a fight they will now be more likely to kill the zombie and not get downed.
    • When venturing out of the safe areas of a level to where zombies roam, do not take fellow survivors with you unless absolutely necessary. Leave them to carry out their tasks and they won't need to engage in a fight with zombies.
  • Have Rick kill 100 walkers using any type of weaponry.

This trophy will likely come through natural progression of the game. Most levels have a lot of zombies, especially Woodbury and Alexandria so you won't have any problems in reaching 100 kills. Feel free to use any type of weapon you like, including firearms or melee weapons. Since you need to kill 50 zombies with melee weapons for the Walker Stalker trophy, I suggest you focus on using melee weapons. Furthermore, guns are not very common in the game and ammo is even less common so it is a lot easier to focus on using melee weapons to kill zombies.

Below are some general tips when it comes to melee combat that will help you kill zombies a lot easier:

    • Increase your strength. This is the most important aspect of melee combat. By increasing your strength you increase both your health and the amount of damage you inflict on zombies. Your health is represented by the number in the top left corner of the screen and your strength can be viewed in the menu under Profile. You can increase your strength by going to the gym, one of which is found in all levels after the tutorial.
    • Find/craft a good weapon. All melee weapons have two statistics, Damage and Attack Time. You will want a weapon that is high in Damage and low in Attack Time. I found the sword to be one of the best weapons in the game which fortunately is pretty common in all levels. It can kill zombies in three hits depending on your strength. The Nunchucks are also a good alternative and can be crafted by combining Timber + Timber + Wire. For a full list of weapons in the game, please refer to the Crafty Rick trophy description.
    • Don't fight more than one zombie at once. You will often come across groups of zombies and it is not wise to fight them all at once. Draw the attention of one at a time and walk them away from the group before killing them. You can easily get overwhelmed and killed quickly when fighting more than one zombie at once and that's even with high strength and a good weapon.
  • Kill 50 walkers using Melee weaponry only.

Please refer to the Dead Busy! trophy for more information.

  • Obtain at least one type of the following weapons; melee, pistol, rifle, machine gun and shotgun.

There are five types of weapons in which you can acquire in the game. These include melee, pistol, rifle, machine gun and shotgun. Some are far more common than others, especially melee weapons, whilst others are not as readily available. In addition to this, some weapons can only be found in specific levels so you will need to watch out for them as you play through the game. In order to unlock the trophy you only need to pick up one of each of the five types of weapons. You don't need to kill any zombies with them. Below is a description of each type of weapon and where they can be found:

    • Melee: Found from the very beginning of the game, you will likely find one very early on in the game by searching through desks in each of the survivors rooms. Examples of melee weapons include a crowbar, sword, hammer and baseball bat.
    • Pistol: Another common weapon found in all levels of the game. You can easily find one in the Greene Family Farm by searching desks and looting rucksacks, especially outside the safe area of the farm where the zombies are located.
    • Rifle: Can only be found in the fifth level of the game, Alexandria. The weapons are not very common and you might need to search around for them in the various buildings of the level. I found one in the building directly east of building in which you eat your meals, inside a rucksack.
    • Machine Gun: Can only be found in fourth level of the game, Woodbury. You will unlikely find one by searching desks, will need to obtain one from one of the guards patrolling the level. Most guards will be equipped with a pistol but some will have a machine gun which you can distinguish between as they are holding it in two hands. Build up your strength and wear some armour, now knock out one of the guards then search him to get his gun.
    • Shotgun: This weapon first starts to appear in level three, Meriweather Correctional Facility. It is commonly found by searching desks outside that of your fellow survivors rooms. Like the pistol, you shouldn’t have much trouble finding this weapon.
  • Have walkers devour the cooked meat item.

Cooked meat is an item used to attract zombies when placed on the ground, thus drawing their attention away from yourself. It is easiest to obtain in the third level, Meriweather Correctional Facility. You will have a Kitchen Position Group Task to complete between 15:00 and 17:00. This requires you to pick up uncooked meat and put it in the oven to cook it and create cooked meat. Once you have obtained the cook meat keep it in your inventory and head outside and get the attention of one of the zombies. Once it is alerted to your presence, drop the cooked meat by pressing on it in your inventory. The zombie will go straight for the cooked meat and the trophy will unlock.

The following video shows how to obtain cooked meat in the Meriwether Correctional Facility level and unlock the trophy:

  • Use the Radio distraction item.

Just like cooked meat, the radio distraction device is used to distract zombies allowing you to get past them without needing to engage in combat. It can be extremely useful when there are large groups of zombies or if your health/strength is low and aren't in a position to fight. In order to obtain the radio distraction device you will need to craft it from combining a Battery and a Depleted Radio together. Both of these items are commonly found in all levels be searching desks. Once you have found both items, press to access the crafting menu and combine both items together.

Depending on what level you are in, you will then need to head outside to where the zombies are located and place the radio distraction device on the ground near a zombie by pressing . Once the zombie is alerted to the radio the trophy will unlock. The following video shows how to craft the radio distraction device and then sue it to distract a zombie and unlock the trophy:

  • Have Rick wear the riot gear and walker make up kit at any time.

    GLITCHED

This trophy has two components to it. The first is finding and wearing the Riot Gear and the second is crafting and wearing the Zombie Make Up Kit. Both of these are found in separate levels and they do not need to be worn at the same time, in fact that isn't even possible. The trophy should unlock once you have worn both items on separate occasions. Below is a walkthrough on how you obtain both the Riot Gear the Zombie Make Up Kit, as well as an explanation on how the trophy can glitch and not unlock when it is supposed too.

    Riot Gear:

Finding and wearing the Riot Gear is an objective towards the end of the third level, Merriweather Correctional Facility. You will have to first collect the Blue Key and then make your way into the buildings North of the spawn to collect two sets of Riot Gear. For more information, please refer to the Get Out Of Jail trophy.

    Zombie Make Up Kit:

Crafting and wearing the Zombie Make Up Kit can be completed as early as the second level, Greene Family Farm. However, it is also one of the last objectives to complete before escaping the fifth and final level, Alexandria. In order to make the Zombie Make Up Kit you need to combine Zombie Entrails + Plastic Sheet. Zombie Entrails can be picked up off some dead zombies, whilst the Plastic Sheet is far less common. It rarely appears in most levels but as previously mentioned, finding one in a specific location is an objective in the Alexandria. As such, it is somewhat story related.

Although this trophy is technically story related, many people on both the PS4 and XB1 have experienced it being glitched. The glitch involves the game not registering that you have worn one or both of the clothing items. After wearing the Riot Gear before escaping in the Meriwether level and then wearing the Zombie Make Up Kit before escaping Alexandria the trophy should unlock. However, if it doesn't then there are a few steps in which you can take which should result in the trophy unlocking. Firstly, go back to the Meriweather game and continue your existing save game but be sure to play through a few more days whilst wearing the riot gear. This will ensure the game saves and registers that you have worn the riot gear, now do the same for the Zombie Make Up Kit in the Alexandria level and the trophy should unlock. Failing that, start new playthroughs of both levels and get the items again.

  • Spend 200 credits across any of the level’s vendor points.

Vendors can be used to purchase specific items, tools, weapons etc. in the majority of levels in the game. In order to purchase items from them you will need to earn coins by completed jobs for the other survivors. These jobs first become available in the second level, Greene Family Farm and are represented by the Green "!" above their head (see the image below). In order to start a job, press on the survivor. Most jobs involve finding a specific item, such as a battery, pillow, family photo etc, all of which can easily be obtained by searching desks throughout the level. Each job will reward you with a minimum of 25 coins. The total amount of coins in which you have is displayed in the top right corner of the screen:

Unlike in The Escapists where your fellow inmates were the vendors in which you could buy items from, in this game they are separate to the survivors and are found in specific locations in the level. The easiest level in which to find them is in level two, Greene Family Farm and they appear between the hours of 00:00 and 06:00, inside two specific buildings. The first is in the top right corner of the level and the other is in the bottom left corner of the level. Items range in price from 10 to 75 coins. Simply purchase enough items to spend at least 200 within the one playthrough of the level and you will unlock the trophy.

The following video shows the two locations of the vendor in the Greene Family Farm as well as how to unlock the trophy:

  • Craft all Melee weapons and Gun Extensions.

There are a total of 22 Melee weapons 8 Gun Extensions that need to be crafted in order to unlock this trophy. Some can only be crafted in certain levels, because components are only found in some levels. All melee weapons and gun extensions are fairly easy to craft, once you know the crafting recipe. The only annoying aspect of the trophy is remembering what ones you have and haven't crafted so for that exact reason, I highly suggest you tick them off the list as you craft each one. Once you craft a weapon, your progress automatically saves. You don't need to wait to sleep at night in order for the progress to be saved. You can use this to your advantage by collecting up a lot of components, sleeping so they all save and then make a bunch of weapons and then reload your save to start the day again. Doing it this way means you don't need to collect multiple numbers of each component. This is especially the case for the Rifle, for which there is only one in the game but you need to craft two separate Gun Extensions.

Components required to craft weapons can be found by searching desks. Each level has a large amount of desks so just continually search them. Unlike in the original game "The Escapists", if you drop components on the ground then they will not disappear so use this to your advantage once your desk gets full and just store them throughout the safe area. Also, do not store components in desks other than your own else they will disappear. Other than your own desk, the contents of each desk will refresh daily. Once you have all required components to craft, press to access the crafting menu.

    Melee Weapons

The following list of melee weapons can be crafted in all levels outside of the Tutorial:

    • Knuckle Duster: Razor Blade + Duct Tape
    • Molten Chocolate: Lighter + Chocolate + Mug
    • Multi-tool: Hatchet + Crowbar + Duct Tape
    • Nailed Baseball Bat: Nails + Baseball Bat
    • Nunchucks: Wire + Timber + Timber
    • Paddle: Frying Pan + Broom + Duct Tape
    • Poker: Baton + Duct Tape + Sharp Screwdriver (Although the Baton can be found anywhere, I highly recommend crafting this weapon in Meriwether as they are more readily available)
    • Razor Comb: Razor Blade + Comb
    • Sharp Screwdriver: Screwdriver + File
    • Sock Mace: Sock + Bar Of Soap
    • Super Sock Mace: Sock + Battery

    • Tinned Mace: Sock + Tin Can

    Gun Extensions

There are a total of four guns in the game, each of which have two Gun Extensions:

    • Pistol Modified: Pistol + Spring + Electric Screwdriver (Note: The Pistol can be found in all levels after the Tutorial)
    • Pistol Modified: Pistol + Spring + File
    • Shotgun Modified: Shotgun + Hacksaw + File (Note: The Shotgun can be found in all levels after the Green Family Farm)
    • Shotgun Modified: Shotgun + Pliers + Spring
    • Machine Gun Modified: Machine Gun + Pliers + Blow Torch (Note: The Machine Gun can only be found in Woodbury, and is carried by some of the human guards patrolling the level)
    • Machine Gun Modified: Machine Gun + Pliers + Chisel
    • Rifle Modified: Rifle + Electric Screwdriver + Chisel (Note: The Rifle can only be found in Alexandria, and there is only one. As such, you will need to craft one Gun Extension, and then reload the level and craft the second one)
    • Rifle Modified: Rifle + Electric Screwdriver + Scope
  • Complete any level within 10 days.

This trophy is easiest to obtain in level two, Greene Family Farm as outside of the tutorial it is the quickest and most straightforward of the levels in the game. If you focus on the objectives you should finish the level after approximately three days so there is a lot of room for error. I wouldn't bother wasting time trying to equip all other survivors with weapons for the final battle in the level, just fight the zombies yourself once you have worked on your strength and have some armour and a decent weapon. The current day in which you are on is displayed at the top of the screen. For more information on the objectives of this level and how to complete it, please refer to the Survive Greene Family Farm trophy.

  • Get through a day from 7:00 to 23.00 without any increase to the threat level on Meriwether.

Meriweather Correctional Facility is the third level in the game and you will unlock it after completing the Greene Family Farm level. In order to unlock the trophy you must complete an entire day without the zombie threat being raised. The current threat level is displayed in the top right corner of the screen, your threat level will only increase if you do not stick to the daily schedule of the level i.e. do not turn up for lunch, head counts or your group activities. As such, as long as you do not miss any activities as specified at the top of the screen throughout the day you will unlock the trophy.

It's worth noting that zombies can still enter the prison and attack survivors if they follow you inside. This may happen during the Supply Runs Position Group Task. However, as the threat level can only be raised by skipping activities, this will not have an impact on the threat level. Once you have fulfilled the requirements of each activity, represented by a green tick next to the activity at the top of the screen, you are free to leave that activity.

The daily routine/schedule in the Meriwether level is outlined below, a video walkthrough is also provided:

    07:00 - 08:00: Breakfast
    08:00 - 10:00: Morning
    10:00 - 12:00: Tempering Position Group Task
    12:00 - 01:00: Lunch
    13:00 - 15:00: Afternoon
    15:00 - 17:00: Kitchen Position Group Activity
    17:00 - 19:00: Afternoon
    19:00 - 20:00: Dinner
    20:00 - 21:00: Evening
21:00 - 23:00: Supplies Run Position Group Task
    23:00 - 0:00: Evening Head Count

  • Finish the tutorial level.

    Story related, cannot be missed.

The first level of the game, Harrison Memorial Hospital, serves as a tutorial for the game to introduce you to certain aspects such as crafting and combat i.e. melee and shooting. The level is very short and linear and all you need to do is follow the objectives. You will first wake up in your hospital bed and have to navigate your way towards the exit. Along the way, there are numerous zombies you will need to kill but especially once you are outside. Just use the pistol you are given as it has unlimited ammo and keep your distance from the zombies when shooting so you don't get overrun. Once you make it to the road at the North East corner, the level will be complete and the trophy will unlock.

  • Collect 12 volumes of The Walking Dead

Please refer to The Collector trophy for more information.

  • Kill a Walker with a Trophy

The "Trophy" is a weapon that can only be found in the fifth and final level of the game, Alexandria. As such, this trophy can only be obtained in the same level. The Trophy weapon can only be found at a specific location and once picked up, no more will spawn. This location is in a building North East of the starting location inside a rucksack in the bedroom, along with the Rifle. Note: You can also sometimes randomly find the Trophy being sold by the Vendor between 00:00 and 05:00. The Vendor is located in the middle of the map towards the southern wall.

The following pictures show the building in which you can find the trophy, as well as what the icon of the Trophy weapon looks like:

Once you have found the Trophy, you then need to kill a zombie with it. Unfortunately the weapon is very weak and can be difficult to kill a zombie if use that weapon for the entire fight. It is a lot easier if you weaken the zombie first with another, stronger weapon and then switch to the Trophy weapon and get the killing blow once the zombies health is low. The trophy will unlock once you kill the zombie with the Trophy weapon. The following video gives a walkthrough on where to find the Trophy weapon and how to kill a zombie with it:

DLC: Survival

5 trophies

  • Get 3 Stars on The Defense of Alexandria (Survival)

    Minimum score requirement: 13,000/Wave 27

The Defense of Alexandria is the first and easiest level in the survival DLC. You play as Abraham and have the support from two NPCs from the TV Show i.e. Rick and Carl. The layout of this level is straightforward and you don't need to find any colored keys to get to certain locations. In order to get three stars you will need to reach approximately wave 27, which will net you around 13,000 points. It is not clear as to what the cut-off is for each star rating. Your score is displayed at the top of the screen and the wave number is displayed in the top right corner of the screen. For general tips on gameplay and additional information regarding the Survival DLC, please refer to my Gameplay Tips and Information post here: LINK.

The first things you want to do upon starting the level are listed below:

    • Find a melee weapon for yourself, as well as for Rick and Carl. Melee weapons can be found in desks and rucksacks. I found the best melee weapons to be the crowbar, baseball bat and the sword. Your team mates will only start the level with a handgun and once they run out of ammunition, they will be defenseless so make sure you give them a melee weapon as soon as possible.
    • Find the Minigun. The Minigun can be found in a rucksack on the very left hand side of the level near a frozen lake (see below screenshot). This area can be access from the very beginning of the level and the weapon will always spawn in this location.

    • Craft Heavy Armour for yourself, as well as for Rick and Carl. Heavy Armour can be crafted with the following recipe, Duct Tape + Metal Sheet. Press to access your crafting menu. All required items can be found by searching desks and rucksacks throughout the level, as well as bought from the vendors.
    • Craft the Explosive Minigun. The Explosive Minigun can be crafted with the following recipe, Minigun + Pliers + Chisel. The Pliers and Chisel are relatively common items found in desks throughout the level. They can also be found in some rucksacks as well. Once crafted, this is the most powerful weapon in the game and will kill all enemies with a single shot and all Legendary enemies with three shots.

You will want to complete the above steps as soon as possible as the longer you wait, the further the waves will progress and the more enemies you will have to contend with. The only issue you will have is finding enough ammunition for your Explosive Minigun. Ammunition can be found in Rucksacks throughout the level, however, the contents of these bags does not replenish like they do in desks. Ammunition can also be bought from vendors in the level which are located at the top of the level, as well as on the left hand side. The ones at the top are available straight away, whilst the ones on the left will need to be accessed via breaking the wall with a chisel. Ammunition ranges in price from 25-40 coin. Money won't be an issue as you earn a tonne of it by just killing enemies.

Once I had crafted all the items that I needed, I found it best to keep moving around the map during each wave. You can easily get cornered if you stay in one area, as enemies can come from multiple locations. Always pay close attention to your ammunition levels and don't stray too far from where you are storing your reserves.

The following video is a walkthrough of the first level, The Defense of Alexandria. It illustrates the above listed steps on how to set yourself up and earn three stars:

  • Get 3 Stars on The Invasion of Woodbury (Survival)

    Minimum score requirement: 12,000/Wave 26

The Invasion of Woodbury is the second level in the survival DLC. You play as Michonne and have the support from two NPCs from the TV Show, Glenn and Martinez. This level is slightly harder than the previous level, mainly due to there not being a spawn location of the Minigun. The only way you can acquire one is purchasing it from one of the vendors for 72 coin. As the items in which each vendor sells is completely random, you will need some luck in order to purchase the gun. In order to get three stars you will need to reach approximately wave 26, which will net you around 12,000 points.

    • Find yourself a melee weapon. Michonne's Katana can be found in the rucksack next to the bed in which you wake up in. It is a very good melee weapon and I suggest you keep for the entire level. There are three desks in the starting area and it is worth looking for additional melee weapons to give your allies.
This step isn’t essential at the start of the level, but it pays to keep an eye out for the items you need from the beginning.
    • Look for a Chisel and some Pliers. You will need these items to craft the Explosive Minigun a little bit later.

Once the level has started and you have equipped yourself with a weapon, you will want to make your way to the two vendor locations, as well as to collect the Cyan and Purple keys. Having both of these keys will allow you to access all parts of the level. The first Vendors are located in the stadium seats in the Northern part of the level. The second Vendors are located Northeast of this location behind a metal fence. From the starting location of the game, head north following the fence and make your way around to the East. At this point you will see the first Vendors through a gate in the fence. Continue going East and through a hole in the fence, then head North and you will find the second pair of Vendors.

At this point you will want to make sure at least one of the four Vendors is selling the Minigun. If they aren't then I suggest you restart the level, as it is extremely hard to kill the zombies beyond Wave 5 without it. Everything to this point can be done on the first Wave so you won’t have wasted much time if you need to restart. If one of the Vendors has the Minigun in stock then continue reading.

You will now want to find the Cyan key. This is located inside a Rucksack in the building immediately south of the second Vendors. Retrieve the key and continue killing zombies until you have 72 coin and then purchase the Minigun from the Vendor that is selling it. You will then want to combine it with a Chisel and Pliers to craft the Explosive Minigun. Once you have crafted the gun, the only thing you will need to worry about is ammunition. It can be purchased from vendors for 40 coin (if they have it in stock) otherwise you can find it in numerous Rucksacks and desks throughout the level.

The Purple Key can be found in the same building as the Cyan Key. Head further south through the building until you reach a Purple locked door with a Rucksack behind it. Where the wall is already weakened, use a Chisel to make a hole in the wall and then enter and search the Rucksack and pick up the key. You will now have access to all areas of the level and can search all Rucksacks for ammunition, health and other weapons/components.

The below video is a walkthrough of the second level, The Invasion of Woodbury. It illustrates the above listed steps on how to set yourself up and earn three stars.

  • Get 3 Stars on The Attack on Meriwether (Survival)

    Minimum score requirement: 11,000/Wave 26

The Attack on Meriwether is the third and likely the toughest level in the survival DLC. You play as Tyreese and have the support from two NPCs from the TV Show, Maggie and Hershel. As with the second level, the easiest and quickest way to obtain the Minigun is purchasing it from one of the Vendors. However, unlike the previous two levels, there are only two Vendors in this level, not four. In order to get three stars you will need to reach approximately Wave 26, which will net you around 11,000 points. It is not clear as to what the cut-off is for each star rating. Your score is displayed at the top of the screen, and the wave number is displayed in the top right corner of the screen. For general tips on gameplay and additional information regarding the Survival DLC, please refer to my Gameplay Tips and Information post here: LINK.

As soon as the level starts, you will want to complete the follow steps:

    • Find yourself a melee weapon. Start by searching the three desks inside the room you wake up in but there is also a Rucksack outside this room on the right hand side, though try and find a baseball bat, sword or machete as these are half decent weapons to use in the beginning of the level. You should find some brass, a handgun and some ammunition in the same Rucksack. Give whatever weapons you don't need to your allies.
    • Craft Heavy Armour for yourself. Heavy Armour can be crafted with the following recipe, Duct Tape + Metal Sheet. Press to access your crafting menu. All required items can be found by searching desks and rucksacks throughout the level, as well as bought from the vendors. This step isn’t essential at the start of the level but it pays to keep an eye out for the items you need from the beginning.
    • Look for a Chisel and some Pliers. You will need these items to craft the Explosive Minigun a little bit later.

Once you have completed the above steps you will want to make your way to the two Vendors to see if they are selling a Minigun, as well as find the Purple and Cyan keys. Both vendors are located in the Northern area of the level. From your starting location, head east until you hit the outer walls and then continue north and follow the wall all the way around and continue west. Continue you past the first Vendor you see to the South as we are going to pick up two very useful items first. The first is a Shotgun, which is located in a Rucksack just passed the first Vendor and to the south near a metal fence. Swap it with your handgun and pick up as much ammunition as possible.

With the shotgun in hand, continue West until you come to a small building with a Rucksack inside. Search it and pick up the Pickaxe as this will help you gain access to the Purple key and the first Vendor. Continue west until you find the building with the Vendor inside. On the left hand side is a weak wall that can be knocked down with the pickaxe. Inside will be the vendor and the Purple key. See the following screenshot for their locations:

At this point you will want to make sure the Vendor is selling the Minigun. If not, restart the level and follow the same steps. If it is in stock, you will now want to save up 85 coin to purchase it. This will require you to reach approximately Wave 5. On Wave 3 a Legendary Enemy will spawn and he can be very difficult to kill without the Explosive Minigun. This is where your Shotgun will come in handy. Once the enemies in this wave are dead, purchase the Minigun and craft the Explosive Minigun (Minigun + Chisel + Pliers).

With the Explosive Minigun in your arsenal, you now want to locate the Cyan key as this will give you access to the ammunition room, which will almost give you enough ammunition to last until Wave 26. From the starting location, head west and then into the building to the north. Continue through this building until you get to the Purple locked door. This will lead into a car garage/workshop area. The Cyan key is located in the desk in the Southeast corner of the room (see the following screenshot):

Now that you have the both the Purple and Cyan keys you can access all areas of the level, including the ammunition room. This room is located Northeast of the starting location, behind the Cyan locked doors. Inside will be numerous 'Ammunition' chests and 'Gun Cabinets' that can be searched for ammunition. Once the ammunition reserves are exhausted, you can find more in the numerous Rucksacks around the level. You can also purchase more from the two Vendors.

The following video is a walkthrough of the second level, The Attack on Meriwether. It illustrates the above listed steps on how to set yourself up and earn three stars:

  • Kill the Governor (Survival)

After every 3 or 4 waves of enemies in each level, a Legendary Enemy will appear. A notification will appear in the bottom left corner of the screen (see the screenshot below). These enemies are known characters from the TV show/comic and are completely random in appearance. The Governor is one of these enemies and he will spawn with a number of armoured guards. Simply kill him to unlock the trophy. These enemies take 2-3 shots of the Explosive Minigun to kill.

Legendary Enemies are very common, especially in the later rounds and as such you will not have any troubles unlocking this trophy. For those that like a visual walkthrough, please refer to the following video:

  • Survive until wave 17 on any level. (Survival)

In order to obtain three stars on each of the three levels, you need to reach approximately wave 27. As such, this trophy is essentially story related and you will earn it as you progress through the first level, The Defense of Alexandria. Your current Wave number is displayed in the top right corner of the screen. Once Wave 17 starts on any of the three levels, the trophy will unlock.
