Introduction:

The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 is (obviously) a sequel to the previous game of the same name however this is the first time that the game made it to PlayStation. It is single player only, there is no multiplayer capability and there is no difficulty setting.

As far as the gameplay style, this game works similar to the recent Sherlock Holmes' titles or the old Myst series where the object is to search your environment for clues and put them together to advance the story. During the PC gaming days, this was referred to as a "point and click" type of game. Overall, the game has an adventure type of storyline with a fantasy bent in a mostly satirical manner. Anyone with at least moderate experience with the fantasy genre will recognize many of the references that the game uses throughout.

The difficulty of the game is minimal however not knowing what to do next can sometimes prove to be frustrating if you think you've looked in a specific spot already and there was another step that you overlooked. The game actions are mostly walking around, examining the environment, and selecting actions to perform.

The time this game takes heavily depends on how much you like to follow the story. You can blast through all conversations by skipping the dialog if you wish but then you won't have much of an idea what is going on and you may miss a clue as to your next step(s). If you use a detailed walkthrough, you could probably blast through the game in as little as 15 hours but I'm guessing most people will at least somewhat follow the story and take more towards the range of 21-25 hours.

Walkthrough:

There are a large number of story trophies in this game. While they are not missable, it could be easy for one to get "stuck" in trying to move the story forward. There is a very detailed walkthrough located here: LINK. This walkthrough is trophy centered which means it sticks to the minimum steps required to platinum the game. There are a few more things to explore and do, but if they are not in this walkthrough then they are not required for the platinum trophy.

I strongly suggest using the  button all the time in every location. This button shows you exactly what things you can interact with and can save you time by being able to select actions regardless of where the controllable character is at in that location. This is especially handy if you have an inventory item selected as only the actions for that item will be displayed when pressing . If no actions show up when an item is selected, then that means there is nothing to be done at this time in that location.

For the most part, if you simply interact with everything you see you will eventually figure out how to proceed the story. Keep in mind that many objects require multiple interactions for different results to happen.

This game uses an auto-save ability; there are no separate save files. Because of this, it is very easy to miss some of the trophies. I recommend you use at least two save locations (2 USBs or USB/Cloud) at the end of each area. Some automatic sequences occur at the beginning of new areas and you could miss something. You can also force a manual save at any time.

If you want to figure out as much of the game progression as you can then you are in the right place as this trophy guide will only describe where story-related trophies should unlock. On the other hand, if you want a detailed step-by-step walkthrough to the platinum trophy (or you are simply stuck on a particular trophy) then look here: LINK

Step 1: Play the game
Play through each chapter making sure to grab the missable trophies.

The following road map is my recommended order for acquiring all trophies. Some of the trophies can be done in a slightly different order but if you do this then make very sure you understand all of the missable trophies. Secret trophies

  • Receive the hat of the Master Fisher

Chapter 1: As part of the story, Princess Ivo will be required to fish in a pond in Elfwood. Once you obtain the item necessary to advance the story, it is easy to bypass this missable trophy. Simply keep fishing until Ivo is randomly awarded with the master angler's hat. You can continue to work on this trophy prior to Princess Ivo leaving Elfwood. Step-By-Step: LINK

  • Find out what's wrong with Ivo

Story related and cannot be missed.

Chapter 1: This area revolves around Princess Ivo finding the answer to a question she has. This trophy unlocks once she finds the answer. Step-By-Step: LINK

  • Be enlightened five times

Chapter 1: As part of the story, Princess Ivo will be required to speak with her father the King. One of his conversation options is enlighten me. Simply select this option 5 times and listen to the King's responses. This trophy is missable in that it is not story related and you must unlock it prior to Princess Ivo leaving Elfwood. Step-By-Step: LINK

  • Read all student files

Chapter 1: As part of the story Wilbur Weathervane must read a specific student's file. This student's file only shows up after Wilbur performs a separate action. This is mentioned here because this extra name is not required for this missable trophy. Of course, it is also fine if this extra name is present.

There are 30 student files in the file cabinet in the staff room. There will be 31 if the extra student name is present. This missable trophy will unlock after you read all 30 (or 31) files. This trophy may be completed at any time prior to Wilbur leaving the school. Step-By-Step: LINK

  • Solve the time travel side-quest

Chapter 1: This missable trophy requires that the majority of the story line is complete for the school area, which is after you have unlocked Bibliophile. Look inside of the library for rotten books and solve the quest that they give you. The trophy will unlock once Wilbur is awarded a paper hat. You must unlock the trophy before Wilbur leaves the school. Step-By-Step: LINK

  • Hit all the symbols in the Drunken Punch minigame

Chapter 2: This trophy is very missable in that it is part of an automatic conversation at the beginning of the chapter. You will get no second chance to unlock the trophy as you must fulfill all requirements the first time.

Make a backup save before having Wilbur leave the school in Chapter 1 just to be sure.

As part of the story, Nate will engage in a Drunken Punch minigame. There are 4 floating symbols that you must punch to earn this trophy. If you fail, immediately press  and re-load the game to try again. If the load has you in the wrong spot then use the backup save that you made.

Since you are controlling a drunken Nate the controls are horrible and it is very easy to miss this trophy.

  • Ask the right math problem at the first go

Chapter 2: As part of the story Wilbur Weathervane will be required to record the voice of a specific person. This trophy is very missable in that you will not get a second chance and frankly is entirely luck based (the first time around) as there is no indicator or clue of which conversation options to pick. This trophy is centered around choosing the right conversation options in the right order. Once the conversation options are chosen the first time, they are gone and cannot be repeated. The trophy will unlock immediately after Wilbur asks these questions:

Ask Headmaster Bloch about him being treasurer, then about him being a math champion, and finally present him a math problem of 65+23-47. Each of these numbers is a separate sequential conversation selection. The trophy will pop when he responds that the answer is 41.

  • Escape despite the surprising twist

Story related and cannot be missed.

Chapter 2: As part of the story in Seastone, Wilbur must reach Alastair to save him. The trophy unlocks after a few scenes. Step-By-Step: LINK

  • Solve the tasks of all four gods

During Chapter 3 Wilbur is required to solve some tasks to proceed the story. As mentioned in the trophy description, there are 4 gods and so there are 4 tasks. However, the story only requires 3 of these tasks to be completed. This trophy is missable in that 4th task is not required to be completed, the game automatically moves you along in the story, and you could easily forget about the last task. Complete the 4th task before leaving this area of the game. It does not matter which order you complete the tasks. Step-By-Step: LINK

  • Issue all four laws

As part of Chapter 3 Princess Ivo must write a law in the staff room in the Mage School. As the trophy description states, there are 4 total laws that can be written. This trophy is missable in that only 1 is required for the story and the other 3 must be completed before you finish this area and move on to the next. Step-By-Step: LINK

  • Beat the Red Pirate at poker

This trophy must be accomplished during Chapter 4 on the floating island of Tugator. It is missable because it is not required for the story and you must complete it before moving on to the next area.

At any point of your "free play" in this location, head to the Red Pirate and speak with him until you unlock the ability to challenge him to a poker game via a dialog option. You must defeat him by winning 3 out of 5 games. You may try as many times as you need to. Step-By-Step: LINK

  • Let Nate wear the "special" outfit

During Chapter 4 Nate will be investigating a pyramid. Inside of this area is a secret challenge that is not required for the story and can easily be overlooked. This trophy is missable because you must complete a prerequisite step and the resulting challenge before moving on to the next story area.

    1. This entire set of steps is highly missable as the side quest can only be started while the mummy is still on Nate's back but can only be completed after the mummy permanently leaves Nate's back when you find and talk to Tut-Tut. Both the prerequisite step and the steps below can easily be missed.
    2. Look at the tunnel.
    3. Climb into the tunnel.
    4. Enter the pyramid.
    5. Go back into the far right room.
    6. Look at the board on the left wall.
    7. Try opening the board.
    8. Reach the prize without the golem catching you.
    9. Follow the picture below; these are the directions you need to move your game piece.
    10. The trophy will pop during one of the following cut scenes.

  • Win the Nim game without cheating

During Chapter 4 Nate will be investigating a pyramid. The story will require him to play a Nim-Game. This trophy is missable because you can win the game by cheating which voids this trophy.

The trophy will pop immediately after you win the game without cheating.

    1. Yes, you start.
    2. Tut-Tut removes the far left ball in the 4th row.
    3. Picture: Step 1
    4. Select the very top ball to turn it yellow. Then select the checkmark to the left.
    5. Tut-Tut removes the far left ball in the 4th row.
    6. Picture: Step 2
    7. Remove all 3 balls in the 2nd row.
    8. Tut-Tut removes the far left ball in the 3rd row.
    9. Picture: Step 3
    10. Remove the far left ball in the 4th row.
    11. Tut-Tut removes the far left ball in the 3rd row.
    12. Picture: Step 4
    13. Remove the far left ball in the 4th row.
    14. Tut-Tut removes the far left ball in the 3rd row.
    15. Picture: Step 5
    16. Remove the far left ball in the 4th row.
    17. Tut-Tut removes the far left ball in the 3rd row.
    18. Picture: Step 6
    19. Remove the last 2 balls in the 4th row.

  • Obtain the ghost detecting device

Story related and cannot be missed.

Chapter 5: Unlocks after Wilbur obtains the ghost detecting device (PKE). Step-By-Step: LINK

  • Obtain the Igor outfit

This trophy can only be completed in Chapter 5 after Wilbur reaches the castle. This trophy is missable because it is not required by the story, you can easily overlook it, and it must be completed before you finish the game. The trophy will pop once you obtain the Igor disguise.

    1. To begin you must Look at the stairs leading down while in the entrance hall of the castle in Chapter 5.
    2. Go down into the cellar.
    3. Look at the note. They are directions that you can repeat at any time from the inventory.
    4. This section requires you to operate almost fully on sound. You can see very faintly around Wilbur but that is it.
    5. I advise that you temporarily turn up your volume for this part.
    6. Start by heading east.
    7. You will shortly reach a crossroad that has a blowing wind sound coming from it. Keep heading east.
    8. The next crossroad you reach will sound like crunching snow underneath your feet. Keep heading east.
    9. The 3rd crossroad will sound like crunching beetles. Head north.
    10. Proceed until you start hearing footstep echoes. Head west.
    11. Proceed until you start hearing flowing water. Head north.
    12. While heading north, press towards the east so that you can take the first crossroads to the east.
    13. Proceed until you hear wooden boards being walked upon. Head north.
    14. While heading north, press towards the east so that you can take the first crossroads to the east.
    15. Proceed east all the way to Igor’s room.
    16. Look at Igor’s cupboard.
    17. Open Igor’s cupboard to receive an Igor uniform and unlock Yes, master?
  • Watch the entire end credits

Simply let the 10 minutes of credits pass you by to unlock this trophy. This trophy is missable because you can skip the end credits at the end of the game. If you do happen to do so, you will end up at the main menu. Select Continue and you will be right back at the end of the game. Complete the game once more to see the ending credits again.
