Introduction:

Subject 13 is a puzzle adventure game created by inconsistent French developer Paul Cuisset (Cruise For a Corpse, Flashback, Shaq Fu, Amy). This one falls somewhere in the middle of the former two and the latter two in terms of quality.

You play as Franklin Fargo – aka Subject 13 – a professor who has recently lost his fiancée Sophie. Suicidal, Franklin wakes up in an abandoned science facility, where a mysterious entity commands him to solve the mysteries surrounding him.

Generally, the game is easy when following a walkthrough. Without a walkthrough, it's still not too bad. However, the back half of the game is when the puzzles start going off the rails but and the puzzles in Chapter 4 are downright infuriating. I have written a walkthrough to help you get through it but you're still going to need some luck to get through the final (timed and randomized) puzzle.

The game relies on autosave only and, as far as I've been able to tell, the game only autosaves when you enter a new room. Use this to your advantage at the end of Chapter 4 before you start on the timed puzzle, and back up your save.

Walkthrough

Step 1: Play through the game while collecting all testimonies and without using hints, until you enter the temple in Chapter 4

Subject 13 is a fairly linear game, and all the puzzles need to be solved to get through the game so you don't need to worry about losing your way or missing any puzzles. In terms of collectibles, the game will outright tell you you've missed collectibles before you hit points of no return, giving you a chance to go back and collect them. There is no chapter select in the game so make use of these warnings in case you have missed something.

By the end of this step, you will have earned:

The start
Some fresh air?
Are you lost?
So, what is it?
Informed Subject
Did you say monkey business?

And likely:

I'm a liar
Desperate Subject

Step 2: Backup your saved game

I cannot stress this enough. Unless you're insanely lucky, you're not going to get the time-based final puzzle trophy on your first try. The game does not have chapter select so if you don't backup your save and fail to solve the final puzzle in the required time, you're going to have to play through the whole game again so backup your save!

Step 3: Complete the game (solving the final puzzle in under 20 minutes, if possible)

Note that while there is a time-based trophy for solving the final puzzle, you don't need to solve it in that amount of time to actually finish the game. It may be easier for you to simply solve the final puzzle in your own time to get a feel for how it works and unlock the rest of the game's trophies, then reload your save file and work on your time trial.

By the end of this step, you will have earned:

Revelation?
You know everything
The best Subject
Incorruptible Subject

And hopefully:

Cold-blooded Subject

13 trophies ( 11  3  )

  • You have to finish the first chapter. Consider it to be a warm-up, Subject 13.

Story related and cannot be missed.

Once you solve the reverse tic-tac-toe puzzle in the Pod Room and exit, this trophy will unlock.

  • You have to find a testimony... Will you read it?

    See You know everything

  • Find half of the testimonies... Worrying isn't it?

    See You know everything

  • Find all the testimonies... Terrifying isn't it?

There are 27 testimonies in the game. Most of them you must obtain by finding yellow recording devices in each chapter, but some you will obtain during natural story progression. Whenever you pick one up and read it (you must choose to read it for it to register to your game), the border of the testimony text will tell you the percentage of testimonies found in the chapter (left side) and in the game total (right side).

You cannot revisit areas accessed in previous chapters. The game makes up for this by warning you that you're still missing testimonies if you try to finish the chapter, giving you an opportunity to back out and search for whatever you're missing.

Here is a breakdown of testimonies by chapter:

    Chapter 1 – 2
    Chapter 2 – 12
    Chapter 3 - 8
    Chapter 4 - 5

Following my walkthrough will get you all the testimonies: LINK

  • Finish the game without using the help... You can do it, Subject 13!

is your hint button. When you press it, you will be given a "are you sure you want to use a hint?" screen; confirming so will use a hint. Just don't press throughout the whole game and you will be fine. I tested this – if you press to bring up the confirmation screen, you will not void the trophy. You have to actually confirm you want to use a hint before you void the trophy.

  • Are you going to lie to the entity? That's nice!

At the very beginning of the game, the entity will ask you a question. Answer with "[Lying] I don't remember" to unlock this trophy.

  • Are you going to tell the entity all? Are you a gossip?

At the very beginning of the game, the entity will ask you a question. Answer with "I was going to end it all" to unlock this trophy.

  • Never use the Skip Puzzle button! Come on!

I never actually came across a Skip Puzzle button during my playthrough, which leads me to believe this is an option you get after you use up your hints during any given puzzle. As you shouldn't be using hints anyway (see The best Subject), this will not be an issue during your playthrough and will unlock with the aforementioned trophy.

  • Finish the final puzzle in less than 20 minutes? Yes, you can do it!

This is the hardest trophy in the game. The final puzzle is a massive Minesweeper puzzle. It's randomized but that's not what makes it difficult. Rather, it's a 3D Minesweeper puzzle, so you won't be able to see the entire board at once. The Minesweeper puzzle uses Mayan numbers; here is a chart to help you figure out how to translate them (credit to Wikipedia for this):

There's some element of luck for this one. Generally speaking, your best bet is to brute force the top and bottom rows of the puzzle, as that will more often than not clear about half the board. After that, it's up to your minesweeper skills. Good luck. In the original version of the game, the time limit was 10 minutes. At least we got more time?

  • Solve the 3 monkeys' puzzle... Easy you say?

Story related and cannot be missed.

In chapter four, you will find yourself outside of a temple. Scattered around the area are gold plaques with Mayan numbers you can reveal using a special crystal found in the area. You have to do some maths and add these numbers up based on the category they're in (eye, mouth, ear) then translate that number into Mayan base-20 and align a key to represent these numbers in order to unlock the three monkey statues.

For an easier ride, just use my walkthrough to get the quick and easy answer as this puzzle is (thankfully) not randomized.

Secret trophies

  • You have to finish the second chapter. What about some fresh air, Subject 13?

Story related and cannot be missed.

Once you solve the light projection puzzle in the experiment room and exit outside, the trophy will unlock.

  • You have to finish the third chapter. Do you want a ball, Subject 13?

Story related and cannot be missed.

Once you are able to cross the bridge outside of the camp area on the shore, this trophy will unlock.

  • You have to finish the fourth chapter... Are you sure you want it?

Story related and cannot be missed.

After solving the final puzzle (see Cold-blooded Subject), no matter whether you solve it in the time limit or not, you will go through some more dialogue. Walk into the pillar of light when you regain control of your character and finish the game, unlocking this trophy.
