Introduction:

SteamWorld Dig is a platform mining adventure. Take the role as Rusty, a lone mining steambot, as he arrives to an old mining town in great need. Dig your way through the old earth, gaining riches while uncovering the ancient threat that lurks below...

This is a very fun and enjoyable game, albeit on the short side. It is possible to 100% this game on a single playthrough, but it isn't recommended unless you are already familiar with the game.

The trophies that'll give you the most trouble on this list are Sequence Breaker, It's a Secret to Everybody, and Master Prospector. I recommend taking a playthrough just to learn the ropes of the game so you can better prepare yourself for your Master Prospector playthrough. This guide covers both the PS4 and Vita versions of the game, as the trophy list is shared.

Walkthrough:

As I mentioned above, I suggest doing 2 playthroughs on your road to 100%, although it is theoretically possible to 100% the game in a single playthrough.

Step 1 - First Playthrough

This will mainly be your "learn the ropes" playthrough. Take your time to figure out how things work, where things are, and just enjoy this great little title. Try to get all trophies aside from Just Like Real Life, Quicker Than a Tumbleweed, and Master Prospector in this playthrough.

Trophies Earned:

Scratching the Surface
Mythical Creatures
It Goes Deeper!?
Rock Bottom
Sequence Breaker
Turtle Soup, Yum!
Fully Loaded
It's a Secret to Everybody
Shine on, You Crazy Round Thing
Two Kinds of People
Assimilated

Step 2 - Second Walkthrough

This will be your "perfect-run" playthrough. Here, you'll beat the game with no deaths, in under 2 hours and 30 minutes and obtain Master Prospector.

Trophies Earned:

Quicker Than a Tumbleweed
Just Like Real Life
Master Prospector

Step 3 - Cleanup

This will be where you get any trophies you may have missed. Either continue from one of your existing save files or start a new one. Totally up to you.

14 trophies ( 12  4  )

  • Complete the game with more than 20000 gold collected in total.

    (Missable)

Gold can be collected from mining the myriad of ore blocks in the various worlds of the mineshaft. There are far more than 20,000 gold worth of ores in the game, so this shouldn't be a problem. You can get it on your first playthrough to help you on your way to Fully Loaded, but it is one of the requirements for Master Prospector, so you can obtain it then if you want. This trophy is missable however, as you lose coins upon death. If you lose too many coins this way, you may have to play through the game again.

If you're having trouble getting this trophy, there is an upgrade in Vectron that allows you to see the location of minerals and orbs, thus making this trophy considerably easier. You can also expand the map via the pause menu if necessary.

  • Complete the game in less than 2 hours, 30 minutes.

    (Missable)

Also self-explanatory. You'll obtain this on your way to earning Master Prospector.

  • Complete the game with more than 150 orbs collected in total.

    (Missable)

Orbs are found in blocks that look like this:

There are more than 150 orbs in the game and can be obtained on either playthrough, as it is a requirement for Master Prospector and a step to obtaining Fully Loaded.

  • Complete the game without getting killed once.

    (Missable)

Fairly self-explanatory, you'll earn this trophy on your way to Master Prospector after not losing a single life during gameplay. However, if you die and don't press any buttons afterward, simply press the XMB button on the PS4/Vita and exit out of the game to resume from your last save. This will negate the death, giving you a chance to try again.

  • Get all four gold stars in the same playthrough.

    (Missable)

This will be the main focus of your second playthrough. The requirements to get four gold stars are as follows:

    • Beat the game in less than 2 hours, 30 minutes
    • Obtain 20,000 Gold
    • Obtain 150 Orbs
    • No Deaths

Needless to say, you'll obtain Just Like Real Life and Quicker Than a Tumbleweed, as well as Two Kinds of People and Shine on, You Crazy Round Thing if you haven't earned them yet.

I suggest skipping some unnecessary upgrades such as Dynamite during this step, as well as rushing Archaea before the Old World, as well as ignoring the majority of ores in Archaea as their value is...well, near worthless. Another tip I can offer is do not bother upgrading the pickaxe. Focus on upgrading the Drill, Pouches, and the Lanterns in that order. Upgrade the Steam Punch at least once or twice if you find you have the extra funds.

Do not exit the game from the pause menu. This will save the game time, but will not save your progress.

Should you die, do not press any buttons. Just quit to XMB and close the application. While this will take you back to your last save, it certainly beats screwing up your Master Prospector run.

Also, be sure that you've got 20K Gold/150 Orbs before you fight the final boss. After you beat the final boss, your save reverts to before you beat it, but the time you took to get up to and beat the final boss will be added to your existing total.

Just watch your time and be choosy with your upgrades and this trophy should be no issue at all.

If it helps, be sure to watch a speedrun of the game such as this one:

  • Find all secret areas in the caves.

    (Missable)

There are 20 secrets total in this game. All the secret areas are found in caves inside the mine, usually tipped off by different-looking rocks/plates and most secrets can be found easily by obtaining the Mineral Locator in Vectron and backtracking through the caves. However, there are a couple secrets that are just out of range of the locator and will need to be searched more thoroughly for.

Or, you can follow more detailed information in this helpful steam guide by Ralf, and in the spoiler box below: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfil.../?id=314966329

    Area 1: Archaea

This secret is located in the generator room. As you enter the room, walk to your right and the secret will be right beneath your feet.

    Secret 2: Cave 1

Further down the generator room, when you need to break the dirt for the little magnet to create a platform on the right side, head slightly more to the left and mine upwards. The secret will be here.

    Secret 3: Cave 6

This is the cave where you get the drill, at the very bottom of Archaea. Enter it, jump past the trilobites on the left, then jump to the patch of dirt right above the entrance. The secret is inside.

    Area 2: Old World

    Secret 4: Cave 4

This secret is located in one of the optional caverns in the Old World. Enter the cave, jump down and kill the shiner, bounce your way through, then in the little corridor on the right, hit the patch of dirt for a secret.

    Secret 5: Cave 5

With the Static Dash, this secret is very easy to get. Jump up all the way, then walk to the right until you see a sleeping shiner. The secret is a patch of dirt to the left of the guy. Without the static dash, you'll need to go all the way around. To the left, down the ladder, past the acid, up the ladders, past the acid again, kill the bottle-throwing shiner with TNT, then jump up the wall above him and head towards the sleeping shiner.

    Secret 6: Cave 6

This one is very easy. Just walk towards the left and hit the wall.

    Secret 7: Cave 6

Take the bouncy mushrooms to your right and jump all the way up until you see a large orb stuck in dirt in an inaccessible area. The lantern isn't bright enough to fully light up the secret tile, but it's visible in the screenshot. Just break that block and you're good to go.

    Secret 8: Cave 6

In the room where you get the fall dampeners, there's a patch of dirt in the left wall. You'll need the steam punch for this, as ladders can't be used in caves. As per the other secrets, break it open and the secret is yours.

    Secret 9: Cave 5

The final secret in the Old World is in the generator room in cave 5. Once inside, head left, then go up to the crates placed over an acid pool. You need to leave one crate on the platform in order to access the secret, do so via dynamite on the top crate, or step on a gap in the crates, punch the one above you, then take out the crate you were standing on. That's it for the old world!

    Area 3: Vectron

    Secret 10: Cave 2

From the entrance, head left, jump up to the maze and head right. The secret is in front of you.

    Secret 11: Cave 2

Once you get the mineral detector from the room specified in the screenshot above, hop on up to the top right platform and hit the right wall with one or two fully charged steam punches. The secret message should appear.

    Secret 12: Cave 2

You won't be able to get this secret without destroying the generator first. Once that's done, jump up to the top corridor and punch a hole in the ceiling.

    Secret 13: Cave 4

Again, the generator must be destroyed before attempting this secret. Go back to the turrets when that's done and break the left wall. The road to the actual ore is very far, so this secret is easily missable.

    Secret 14: Cave 4

Right after jumping past the lasers in this cave, jump down, step a few tiles to the right, and punch upwards. You'll get this secret.

    Secret 15: Cave 4

Right from the generator room, you'll see a pool of water in a wall, along with some ore. Hit the block to the right of that ore.

    Secret 16: Cave 4

Once you've destroyed the generator, hop back down to the platform you steam jumped from, and use steam punch on the wall to your left. This is another easily missable secret.

    Secret 17: Cave 5

This one's easy. It's under the lower laserbox, to the right.

    Secret 18: Cave 6

Try not to die as you dodge the crazed exploders in the room. The secret is beneath you once you've passed them.

    Secret 19: Final Cave

The final secret you'll get before you face the antagonist of the story. You can sprint past the laserboxers at the beginning, but you will get hit, so just deactivate them temporarily. The block you need to destroy is just past your lazers.

And there you have it! Enjoy your new, shiny trophy.

  • Maximize all upgrades.

    (Missable)

This is earned for buying all the upgrades for the Pickaxe, Drill, Steam Punch, Lantern, Armor and Water Tank. Do this during the first playthrough.

  • Reach the bottom of the world.

    (Missable, technically)

Earned for reaching the 871M point at the very, very, very bottom of the mineshaft in World 3: Vectron.

  • Destroy two generators before entering Vectron.

    (Missable)

There are generators hidden in cave 1-1 (first numbered cave in Archaea) and cave 2-3 (third numbered cave in the Old World) that can only be reached before you obtain the Static Dash if you have Sturdy Armor and the dynamite upgrade. I would recommend doing this on your first playthrough, as this could easily screw up your death count and completion time on your second playthrough. Video guides for each cave can be found below, courtesy of TheMuteGamer.

    Cave 1-1:

    Cave 2-3:

  • Defeat a turtle submerged in water.

    (Missable)

This trophy is fairly simple. Just lure a Iron Turtle into a pool of water and kill it once it's submerged. There are multiple locations in the game where this can be obtained, though the earliest is in the first Cave after you obtain the dynamite.

Secret trophies

  • You found Archaea!

Story related and cannot be missed. This will be obtained the first time you go into the mines.

  • You found the Old World!

Story related and cannot be missed. This will be obtained once you dig far enough down in Archaea.

  • You found Vectron!

Story related and cannot be missed. This will be obtained once you dig to the bottom of the Old World.

  • Immortalization of a destructible steambot.

Story related and cannot be missed. This will be obtained once you beat the end boss at the end of Vectron. A video walkthrough of sorts can be found below, courtesy of The Game Cavern.
