Walkthrough

Note: The Use of Saving
This game allows you to be able to save at any time during the game. Simply Pause, then go to Save Game. This saves your exact position you left on the screen. This is considered the game's only cheat as you can use this to load up the previous save if you accidentally die or don't hit a target time you wanted. Use this to your advantage. For example, in the very difficult Scrap Brain Zone, it's very hard not to die. Proceed a little in the act, save, and then proceed more. You do this so that if you die you can load up the previous save to know what's coming. Warning: Make sure you are in a safe spot to save. If you trap yourself in a position where you will die, there is not much you can do.

Step one: Playthrough #1 (Getting everything not speed run related)
The goal for this playthrough is to play the game carefully. Your aiming for getting all the trophies here is not speed run related. For the very first level (Green Hill Zone Act 1) focus on getting the Centurion trophy. From this point you will also be trying to get every single chaos emerald (by ending an act with 50 rings) and beat the game without dying. See Chaos Master and Perfect Win.

KneeKnee has been kind enough to send a link to view all the acts. It's nice to get an idea of the acts, but they don't show every single detail such as enemies or certain objects. Here is the link: Sonic the Hedgehog Level Maps - Sonic Retro

Step two: Playthrough #2 (Getting all the speed related trophies)
After getting some experience with the game, now you should try to get all the speed related trophies. This include Fast Green, Fast Marble, and the Fast Win trophies. See Fast Win trophy for details about time management.

You may choose to do step one or step two in any order but the order above is recommended.

12 trophies ( 7  )

  • Get 100 or more rings.

This should be done on the very first act (Green Hill Zone Act 1), which is the very first level. It's the easiest act in the game and contains more than 100 rings, not obviously hidden. Simply advancing through the act you will see 100 visible rings. You do not need to complete the act to get the trophy. It will pop up after you obtain your 100th ring.

  • Clear the Green Hill Zone.

The Green Hill Zone is the first zone and is pretty easy to do. It's basically introducing you to the game. There is nothing to hard to really worry about. See Green Hill Zone Video Guide below.

  • Beat Green Hill Zone Act 1 in under 35 seconds.

This might take a few tries to do but it's really not that difficult. The act has a lot of objects that will stop you from moving. After moving through the act a couple of times, you will get the hang of things and get faster, avoiding objects that stop you. You must get under 35 seconds as the trophy description says. Getting exactly 35 seconds gets you nothing. If you are having a little bit of trouble, there is an invincibility monitor hidden in the second tree after the first bridge you pass in the level. Hit the top of the tree to get it. This will allow you to not get hurt from enemies, which slows you down (credit goes towards TheSystemError). See video below for a visual aid as to getting the trophy.

You can use the save system cheat for this, but you're better off just trying to run through the whole act.

  • Beat Marble Zone Act 1 in under 80 seconds.

This one will also take a few tries. I recommend using the save system cheat for this trophy. Divide the act into sections of 20 seconds and save. Have an individual save file for starting at the beginning of the act and have a different save file for doing the 20 second trick. That way if you don't beat the act in less than 80 seconds, you have the save file to start at the beginning again. Anyways try to go fast and avoid slowing down. Once you get to 20 seconds, pause and save. Then go back and pick up where you left off. This is one method.

Another method is to just try and get through the whole act at once. It's not that difficult. Sonic becomes temporarily invulnerable if hit by an enemy, touching lava, or hitting a spike. He will lose all his rings once hit and become invulnerable. Quickly grab at least one ring and continue moving. This comes in handy when coming to the lava part. You can just jump, land in the lava, and take advantage of that temporary invulnerability. Just make sure you grab at least one ring or else Sonic will get killed if he takes any further damage.

  • Get to the Star Light Zone.

To get this trophy, you have to beat the Labyrinth Zone as the Star Light Zone is right after it. The Labyrinth Zone consists of 3 acts. Most people find this zone to be difficult. Take advantage of bubbles. Sonic cannot hold his breath forever. Use the bubbles to give Sonic air. You'll know when you need air because a new type of panic music starts playing.

  • Get to the Spring Yard Zone.

The Spring Yard Zone is the 3rd Zone in this game. In order to reach this Zone, you must beat the Marble Zone which consists of 3 acts. Marble zone is pretty easy. Just need to be careful with lava.

See the video below for a Marble Zone guide:

  • Get to the Labyrinth Zone.

The Labyrinth Zone is the 4th Zone. You must pass the Spring Yard Zone to get it. The theme of this Zone is urban city/casino. This zone has quite a few stuff to avoid. There are monsters with spikes on top of them that you should just avoid, huge rotating spikes, and these baddies that chase you when you're going down slants. Keep your cool and always have a ring with you. Remember that you can use the save system to your advantage.

  • Get one Chaos Emerald.

To get a chaos emerald, you have to get to a special stage. In order to get to a special stage you must have at least 50 rings with you upon completion of an act. At the end of the act when you pass the post, a giant ring will be there and you must jump into it. Do so quickly because after passing the finish post, you have only a few seconds to get into that ring. It's also possible to miss the giant ring if you sprint pass the post and go off screen. The game will not let you go back on screen to jump into the giant ring.

Once you go to the special stage SAVE!!!! If you screw up you miss your opportunity to get the chaos emerald. You fail the stage by hitting bright red flashing circles. Reload your game and start over. Save after you get it.

  • Get all the Chaos Emeralds.

There are six chaos emeralds to obtain in the game. You can only get them in the first two acts of every zone (except the last zone). The special stage consists of a rotating maze. You control Sonic and have him jump around the maze in order to find the chaos emerald. The chaos emerald will be surrounded by crystals that need to be hit (simply by touching them) in order to reach it. You need to time it so that you lay on these crystals. Whilst laying on them they will start to disappear. There are circular pieces with the letter “R” on them that reverses the direction of the spinning maze. Watch out for the red flashing circles as they end the special stage.

Here is the list of levels where you can obtain a chaos emerald:

    1) Green Hill Zone Act 1
    2) Green Hill Zone Act 2
    3) Marble Zone Act 1
    4) Marble Zone Act 2
    5) Spring Yard Zone Act 1
    6) Spring Yard Zone Act 2
    7) Labyrinth Zone Act 1
    8) Labyrinth Zone Act 2
    9) Star Light Zone Act 1
    10) Star Light Zone Act 2

As the game progresses it will get harder to get to the end of the act with 50 rings. So my recommendation is to do the first 6 listed above. SAVE SAVE SAVE right as the special stage begins. Most likely you will fail some of these, so it's always handy to have that save ready to get loaded back up.

Here is a video guide for all special stages:

  • Win

    Beat the game.

You need to finally beat Dr. Robotnik. The Zone will be called “FINAL ZONE” and it comes after beating the Star Light and Scrap Brain Zones.

HERE IS HOW TO BEAT THE FINAL ZONE:

  • Beat the game in under 40 minutes.

Now is the perfect time to utilize the SAVE cheat. You must beat the game in under 40 minutes. It sounds a little hard, but it's really not.

These are the major tips to remember:
    -Avoid trying to get emeralds
-SAVE before every Act, reload if you die
-Use the invulnerability technique to keep moving

I got this trophy by overly using the save cheat. I would save before every act and save 2-8 times during the act at spots where I had trouble moving fast at (and had to restart the act). Really utilize the SAVE function.

I have replayed the game and listed my times. These are the times you should try to aim for. It lists the acts, game time, and saved data time (taken at the beginning of the next act).

Green Hill Zone---Game Time-----Saved Data Time
    Act 1-------------- 0:34----------- 0:00:57
    Act 2-------------- 0:35----------- 0.01:46
    Act 3-------------- 1:10----------- 0:03:16
    Marble Zone
    Act 1-------------- 1:10----------- 0:04:41
    Act 2-------------- 2:17----------- 0:07:12
    Act 3-------------- 2:07----------- 0:09:41
    Spring Yard Zone
    Act 1-------------- 1:40----------- 0:11:33
    Act 2-------------- 1:13----------- 0:13:04
    Act 3-------------- 2:21----------- 0:15:42
    Labyrinth Zone
    Act 1-------------- 2:26----------- 0:18:23
    Act 2-------------- 1:47----------- 0:20:38
    Act 3-------------- 2:24----------- 0:23:09
    Star Light Zone
    Act 1-------------- 1:15----------- 0:24:38
    Act 2-------------- 0:56----------- 0:25:09
    Act 3-------------- 1:57----------- 0:28:07
    Scrap Brain Zone
    Act 1-------------- 1:25----------- 0:29:44
    Act 2-------------- 1:45----------- 0:31:55
    Act 3-------------- 5:34----------- 0:37:63
    Final Zone
    FINAL ACT--------- 2:42----------- 0:40:20
    Total TIME________________________________
    -------------------24:44----------- 0:40:20

The time that you need for this trophy is based off the combined level clocks, not the time it says on your saved data file!

I purposely took a long time on Scrap Zone Act 3 to prove it.

  • Beat the game without dying.

Once again, you're going to use the save cheat. Save before every act and save 2-3 (or however many) times during the act. When you die, just reload the last game save. Make sure you do not save at a spot where your death cannot be avoided. An example would be if you saved at a spot while you were running fast and there is cliff that cannot be avoided. No matter how many times you reload the save, you will die because of how you set yourself up.
