Introduction:

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the 3rd instalment in the rebooted series of the long standing franchise. For this iteration, Eidos Montreal have taken the reins from Crystal Dynamics and set Lara on resuming her journey of stopping Trinity from bringing the world to ruin.

Those who have experienced the 2 previous games will feel right at home, there aren't any big changes to the formula other than a drastic reduction in combat encounters and an increase in puzzle solving and challenge tombs.

The trophy list for the most part is very straight forward, but there are many missable trophies relating to combat. I also cannot stress enough to not attempt 100% completion on Deadly Obsession, it would be beyond tedious, frustrating and less efficient than doing 2 playthroughs anyway.

Walkthrough:

Step 1 - Complete the game on Smart & Resourceful (or higher if you wish) and aim for 100% completion and all combat related missable trophies

I recommend playing on Smart & Resourceful as Lara actively provides hints on puzzle solutions and ammo/resources are more plentiful. Focus on finishing the main story and grabbing every possible collectible along the way, as well as all side missions for 100% game completion.

Thanks to PowerPyx for the videos in the guide!

Important things to note:

  • Combat Trophies - All of these are missable as enemies don't spawn after finishing the game, none are difficult to obtain. You will require certain skills for some of them and you can farm each of them by restarting checkpoints.
  • Lockpick/Rope Ascender - Make sure to buy these from the merchant you find during the quest 'Find Takiy’s Dice', this will cost a total of 6100 gold. The reason for this is because afterwards she moves around to random locations and isn't marked on the map so it can be tricky to find her.
  • Croft Manor Flashback - Don't worry about the collectibles and challenge in this area, they are entirely optional.

By the end of this step you will have hopefully unlocked:

Treasures from the Past
Archeologist
Dr. Croft
Stele Hunter
Tomb Raider
Chain Gang

Makeshift Arsenal

Step 2 - Deadly Obsession NG+

After finishing the game you unlock NG+ with the ability to carry everything over other than collectibles in to Deadly Obsession which makes this a bit easier. Just focus on the main story, ignoring everything else and you should be able to complete it in around 8 hours or so.

By the end of this step you will have unlocked:

Rite of Passage
One with the Jungle
Deadly Obsession
Chalice of Torment

100 trophies ( 83  23  )

  • Earn all Trophies

Earn all other trophies for your shiny new Platinum!

  • Decipher a Monolith

    See Completionist.

  • Complete an Artifact Collection

Story related and cannot be missed

This will come naturally whilst collecting artifacts in each area of the game but regardless, you will unlock it during your visit to 'Mission of San Juan' near the end of the game if you haven't yet.

    Also see Completionist.

  • Complete all Artifact Collections

    Fixed as of update 1.05!

For this trophy you need to complete all artifact collections in the game, including relics, documents and other entries in the artifacts menu, you will obtain the final artifacts automatically during the final story mission. It will come naturally whilst working towards Completionist.

This will unlock once you have collected all relics/documents in the game and obtained the last one as part of the story during the final mission.

Note: It's possible to miss the unmarked artifact 'Antique Knife' from the side quest 'Investigate Sumaq's Murder'. It is required for the trophy and can still be dug up after the quest in the same spot outside of the house so it's worth checking this if you missed it before.

  • Complete 3 Challenge Tombs

    See Tomb Raider.

  • Complete all Challenge Tombs in the main campaign

Challenge Tombs make a return in this game and operate in almost the exact same way. There are a total of 9 tombs and they are all relatively straight forward on Smart & Resourceful with Lara constantly giving you hints when using survival instincts.

See the following video of all Challenge Tomb solutions from PowerPyx:

  • Perform the Serpent's Fury 3 times

    Missable!

For this trophy you need to acquire the Serpent's Strike skill then Serpent's Fury for a total of 3 skill points from the Scavenger (green) portion of the skill tree. This allows you to stealth kill 2 enemies close to each other by pressing during the first kill to chain to another enemy. Use checkpoint restart and farm the same 3 pairs of enemies if you wish.

  • Stealth takedown 25 enemies

    Missable!

Almost every combat encounter in the game provides opportunities to stealth kill all or most enemies, by approaching them from behind and pressing . You should definitely get this naturally but can farm them using checkpoint restarts at any encounter if you wish.

  • Restore and equip a matching vestige outfit

Outfits are acquired by completing crypts, side missions and can be purchased from merchants so you will unlock multiple sets through naturally play. The first 2 crypts in the Peruvian Jungle will reward you with a matching set that can be crafted at a camp to unlock the trophy.

  • Fully upgrade a weapon

Much like the previous titles, weapons can be upgraded at base camps using salvage and other materials found throughout the game, in addition you also need to purchase the skill 'Raposa's Wit' to unlock the final level of upgrades.

You will easily find enough materials throughout the game to upgrade multiple weapons, you can also buy them from merchants so just upgrade whatever weapons you prefer using, the recurve bow requires the fewest materials.

  • Complete 5 Challenges

There are a total of 15 challenges in the game and 5 are required for this trophy but all 15 are required for Completionist. Challenges comprise of shooting certain objects, finding under water plants, amongst other things. All challenge objects can be highlighted using survival instincts if you have the skill 'Owl's Wisdom'.

I have linked a full guide below that shows all challenge solutions courtesy of PowerPyx:

    Challenges Guide

  • Uncover 3 Crypts' secrets

Crypts are small tombs/caves that mainly involve climbing and navigating through an area in order to find a sarcophagus at the end containing an outfit piece. They will show on the map when you either approach them or find explorers backpacks. Fully explore 3 Crypts for the trophy.

  • Restore 5 vestige outfit pieces

This will unlock upon completion of your first side mission but the first one available is 'Deal with the Pillagers' in Kuwaq Yaku.

  • Complete a Side Mission

This will unlock upon completion of your first side mission but the first one available is 'Deal with the Pillagers' in Kuwaq Yaku.

  • Complete 8 Side Missions

All side missions are located in Kuwaq Yaku (1), The Hidden City (6) and Mission of San Juan (1). They are marked on the map when you discover mission giver NPC's using survival instincts or by approaching them, you should come across all of them naturally whilst exploring each area.

Here is a list of all side missions below, they unlock progressively as you progress through the main story but none of them are missable:

    • Deal with the Pillagers (Kuwaq Yaku)
    • Find Takiy’s Dice (The Hidden City)
    • Hearts and Minds (The Hidden City)
    • Freedom (The Hidden City)
    • Rescue Hakan (The Hidden City)
    • Explore the Local Mysteries (Mission of San Juan)
    • Sumaq's Murder (The Hidden City)
    • Ancient Studies (The Hidden City)
  • Perform 5 Eagle's Talon takedowns

he 'Eagle's Talon' skill is automatically unlocked during the main mission 'Path of the Dead'. This skill allows you to fire rope arrows at enemies to hang them up from a branch. Once you unlock the skill you will be given a tutorial and forced to kill an enemy this way, simply restart checkpoint here and repeat 4 more times for the trophy.

  • Purchase a Skill

This will unlock upon purchasing any skill from a base camp but the earliest opportunity is when you arrive at the first camp in the Peruvian Jungle, after the Prologue.

  • Earn all Skills in one category

There are 3 different sections of the skill tree divided in to Seeker (blue), Scavenger (green) and Warrior (red). For this trophy you need to purchase all skills in any of these categories.

Skill points are awarded by gaining XP, which in turn is awarded from completing main and side missions, finding collectibles and everything else you do in the game. You will easily have enough skill points to complete one of the skill trees during your playthrough, particularly when mopping up collectibles and side missions. If you somehow don't have enough by the end of your first playthrough, then you will acquire many more points during your Deadly Obsession NG+ playthrough regardless.

  • Find and open all the Conquistador treasure chests

There are a total of 8 treasure chests in the game that contain rare resources and require the lock pick to open, which can be purchased from the merchant that appears at the end of the 'Find Takiy's Dice' side mission so it's highly recommended to purchase it then.

  • Buy an item from a merchant

You can find merchants selling various items in Kuwaq Yaku, The Hidden City and Mission of San Juan, with the earliest opportunity coming from the former location. Simply purchase any item to unlock the trophy.

  • Kill 5 enemies while they are searching for Lara

    Missable!

Enemies will search for Lara after you have been detected, then losing track of you. Simply get detected, run away and hide in grass or a vine wall for around 10 seconds until the enemies lose track of you and start sweeping the area. This can be farmed at any encounter so kill 5 enemies stealthily whilst in this state then the trophy will pop.

  • Kill 3 enemies while they are distracted

    Missable!

Enemies can be distracted by throwing objects such as bottles and cans or by firing at arrow at a wall. Once an enemy approaches a distraction, kill him stealthily then repeat a further 2 times for the trophy.

  • Kill 5 enemies with friendly fire

    Missable!

This requires the 'Jaguar's Fear' skill which is automatically unlocked during the main mission 'Downpour'. After this you are forced in to shooting an enemy with a fear arrow, thus is the best place to farm for kills using checkpoint restart.

Otherwise, Fear Arrows can be crafted on the go if you have Cloth and Dart Poison.

  • Burn 2 enemies simultaneously

    Missable!

This trophy can easily be obtained right at the start of the game in the second enemy encounter, when making your way through the dig site. You will come across a forklift truck with some bottles next to it and 3 enemies ahead, pick up a bottle and craft a molotov with and throw at the 2 enemies talking to each other.

  • Perform 3 headshots in 3 seconds with the pistol

    Missable!

As with Playing with Fire, at the same encounter near the forklift truck there are 3 enemies close together, quickly shoot them all in the head one after the other but you can restart the checkpoint and try again if you miss.

See the following video from PowerPyx: LINK

  • Lose the enemy 10 times

    Missable!

For this trophy you need to get detected by the enemy, then run away and hide in grass/vine wall for around 10-15 seconds until they lose track of you. Usually they say something like 'lost her' and start searching but this can be farmed at any encounter.

  • Hunt and kill 10 enemies while Perception is active

    Missable!

To use Perception you first need to acquire the skill 'Eye of the Eagle' in the Seeker (blue) tree. You also need to find perception plants which are scattered all around the game world in plentiful supply.

In a combat encounter, you can use Perception plants by pressing + . This allows you to sense nearby enemies in the area for a short time so simply kill 10 enemies with stealth attacks whilst the effect is active but kills with weapons don't count.

  • Kill 10 enemies while Focus is active

    Missable!

To use Focus you first need to acquire the skill 'Scales of the Serpent' in the Scavenger (green) tree, you also need to find focus plants which are scattered all around the game world in plentiful supply.

In a combat encounter, you can use Focus plants by pressing + - this slows down time whilst aiming. Despite this, you need to kill 10 enemies with stealth attacks whilst the effect is active but kills with weapons don't count.

  • Takedown 10 enemies while Endurance is active

    Missable!

To use Endurance you first need to acquire the skill 'Heart of the Jaguar' in the Warrior (red) tree, you also need to find endurance plants which are scattered all around the game world in plentiful supply.

In a combat encounter, you can use endurance plants by pressing + . This allows you take more damage and you need to kill 10 enemies with stealth attacks whilst the effect is active but kills with weapons don't count.

  • Pet 5 llamas

For this trophy you need to pet 5 different Llamas, which can be found in The Hidden City and Mission of San Juan.

In the hidden city you can find one near the 'Unuratu's Home' camp, another nearby up the hill, 2 in the market square and another up the hill in the south-west of the market square, in addition to 2 more in San Juan. You will likely come across them when hunting down collectibles in both areas.

See the following video from PowerPyx:

  • Collect 5 underwater Artifacts

You will unlock this naturally whilst working towards 100% completion but it will pop once you find 5 relics that are located underwater.

  • Complete a climb after finding the Overhang Climbing Gear

Story related and cannot be missed

This will unlock at the end of the main mission 'Rebellion Lives', once you climb out of the Cenote using the overhang climbing gear.

  • Fully upgrade the knife

    Fixed as of update 1.05!

There are 2 knife upgrades in the game, Reinforced Knife and Finely Crafted Knife but for this trophy you need to acquire both of them with the former being purchased from a merchant in The Hidden City (costs 2,900 gold) and the latter from the side mission 'Rescue Hakan' in Upper Paititi later in the story. As of update 1.05 you have acquire the upgrades in any order without the trophy glitching.

  • Collect 20 critters

In order to collect critters you need to buy the skill 'Owl's Meal' from the Seeker (blue) tree, this allows you to then harvest spiders and beetles for venom by walking over them and pressing when prompted. Critters are found all over the place but are in more abundance in Crypts and Tombs. You will encounter plenty through natural play but they can be highlighted with survival instincts or using perception plants.

  • Hunt and loot 5 rare animals

You will encounter rare animals, such as Jaguars and Black Wolves, through natural play but the 'Eagle's Grasp' skill from the Seeker (blue) tree will increase the chance of them spawning. They appear red in survival instincts and it will be very obvious when you encounter them, especially jaguars as you can usually hear them growling.

Rare animals can be farmed in the Peruvian Jungle, Jaguars Den camp, often a Jaguar will spawn if you travel here or you can farm Black Wolves from the cave in the south-west of Mission of San Juan.

  • Gather 40 gold ore

Gold ore is found throughout the game in crypts, tombs and underwater areas but you will easily find enough spots to accumulate 40 gold ore through natural play.

  • Perform 20 headshots with the bow

    Missable!

The bow is the starting weapon in the game and the 20 headshots can easily be farmed during any enemy encounter, by using checkpoint restart.

  • Perform a Stealth Takedown from a mud-covered wall

    Missable!

The first opportunity for this trophy is during the second enemy encounter in Kuwaq Yaku, 'Path of the Living' main mission. The game forces you to cover Lara in mud with , shortly after there will be a group of enemies and a mud wall just in front, hide against the wall and stealth kill an enemy walking by. There are other locations where this can be done but it's best to get it out of the way here.

See the following video from PowerPyx:

  • Craft special ammunition 50 times

Special ammo can be crafted by holding when equipped with a weapon that has it unlocked e.g. fire arrows with the bow. You can also buy the skills 'Serpent's Glint' and 'Boa's Blow' (green) to unlock special ammo for the Pistol and Shotgun respectively. Craft any combination of these 50 times to unlock the trophy.

  • Learn of 5 interesting locations from civilians

In the 3 main towns of the game; Kuwaq Yaku, The Hidden City and Mission of San Juan are NPC's that you can speak to indicated by a chatbox icon and can be highlighted in yellow by using survival instincts. Keep talking to people and the trophy will soon unlock.

  • Shoot a turkey with a Flare Round

Firstly you need to buy the skill 'Serpent's Glint' which unlocks the flare attachment for your pistol. You can find some turkeys at the 'Ruined Tower' base camp in Mission of San Juan, shoot one of them with a flare but it has to be a direct hit and not splash damage that kills it.

See the following video from PowerPyx:

  • Get 3 pieces of equipment

Story related and cannot be missed

You can unlock this trophy by buying equipment from merchants such as Pistol Sight/Suppressor but it will automatically unlock during the story by the time you retrieve the overhang climbing gear regardless.

  • Finish the main storyline

Story related and cannot be missed

This will unlock upon defeating the final boss and watching the cutscenes that follow.

  • Complete Shadow of the Tomb Raider on Smart and Resourceful difficulty

    See Deadly Obsession.

  • Complete Shadow of the Tomb Raider on Rite of Passage difficulty

    See Deadly Obsession.

  • Complete Shadow of the Tomb Raider on One with the Jungle difficulty

    See Deadly Obsession.

  • Complete Shadow of the Tomb Raider on Deadly Obsession difficulty

This is the hardest difficulty in the game and is a step up from the previous games harder difficulties but you can do this on New Game Plus and carry over all earned skills and equipment.

    Deadly Obsession differences:

    • Enemies have increased health, do more damage and locate Lara more quickly
    • No health regeneration in combat
    • Ammunition boxes are rare
    • No hit markers on the reticle
    • Enemies are not highlighted in Survival Instincts
    • No HUD icon when Lara is being detected by an enemy
    • No white paint on critical path
    • Reduced saving grab timer
    • No Survival Instincts during exploration
    • Base camps are unlit and require resources to light
    • Game only saves at Base camps, NO checkpoints
    • No hints are given by Lara
    • No Survival Instincts
    • Shorter window of opportunity for timer mechanics (QTE's)

It may look intimidating but it's really not too difficult, just more tedious if anything due to the lack of survival instincts and having to go all the way back to a base camp if you die. I have outlined some tips below:

    • Weapons - I recommend Heart of the Eagle, this is the most versatile bow and useful for stealth kills. The Vicar Mark II is also a solid rifle, plus the WHWS-16 shotgun tears through close range enemies and works extremely effectively against the final boss.
    • NG+ Skills - When entering NG+ you can select one of 3 skill paths which grant you access to some very powerful skills but 'Jaguar's Rage' grants you brief invincibility after killing an enemy so is the one I recommend.
    • Endurance Plants - Always grab every plant you see, since there is no health regeneration in combat you have to rely on medicine, endurance plants are also very useful as it reduces damage from all sources which makes combat much easier, particularly against the final boss.
    • Platforming - The hardest part of deadly obsession is probably the platforming, the path is not indicated and a single mistake could send you very far back, look up a video guide if you are unsure as you don't want to lose too much progress.
    • Ignore collectibles and side missions - There is no need to go out of your way for collectibles or side missions, just make a b-line for the main story which can be completed in around 8 hours on its own.
    • Final Boss - Always have endurance active in addition to the 'Jaguar's Rage' skill, you will be practically invincible throughout the whole fight. Use the WHWS-16 shotgun to mow down regular enemies and the boss with ease.

The hardest sections are probably the Prologue and Cenote, because on the flood near the end sends you right back to the beginning of the game so be vigilant and try not to make any mistakes on this section or the platforming.

  • Reach 100% completion

    Fixed as of update 1.05!

In order to reach 100% completion you need to collect all 378 collectibles, as well completing all side missions, crypts, challenges and challenge tombs to attain 100% completion in every area in the game, nothing is missable. To make things easier I suggest following the following guide from PowerPyx for all explorer's backpack and archivist map locations as this will reveal collectibles on the map making them easy to find, all collectibles can easily be track on the map screen in each region.

Archivist Maps & Explorer Backpacks Locations

I strongly advise doing this on Smart & Resourceful difficulty as it is much easier than on Deadly Obsession since you can use survival instincts with the skills 'Eagle's Sight', 'Owl's Wisdom' and 'Owl's Vision' to highlight all types of collectibles within range. Provided you have completed all areas to 100%, the trophy will unlock upon defeating the final boss and completing the game.

If you get stuck with anything, be it a side mission or any tomb or collectible then refer to this comprehensive guide by Trophy Germany:

All Completionist 100% - Locations & Guides (Tombs, Challenges, Side Missions etc.)

Select ‘Challenge Tombs’ from the main menu, and then ‘Time Attack’ on this tomb. If you do this after completing the story mission and then the score attack you will have beaten the tomb at least twice, so you should be well rehearsed. The further the distance of your shot, the higher the score for that lantern will be, and if you can do that with a high score multiplier you can earn thousands of points for one lantern.
