Risk of Rain is a 2D action platformer with roguelike elements and randomized levels. Your task is to search each level for a teleporter that takes you to the next level. Once you reach the teleporter, you have to defeat a boss and fight off a 90 second rush of enemies. Once you defeat all the enemies, you'll go to the next level - rinse and repeat. After you complete four levels, you get the option to teleport to the final level. You can play another level before the final level to get more upgrades, if you wish.

There are several characters, many of whom are unlocked after completing goals. Each character has a unique moveset which will change your playstyle. The characters can also be enhanced during any single playthrough with up to 100 different abilities. Note that is on a single playthrough. Once you die, you start all over. The good part is that you only need to complete 5 levels to complete a playthrough, and each level is relatively short.

Risk of Rain has a difficulty timer - the longer you last, the more difficult enemies will become. More enemies will spawn and they will spawn with increased health and attack power. Fortunately, as you defeat enemies and earn gold you will be able to gain abilities through chests, chance, and random drops. There are also drones randomly scattered that can help you. If you get deep into a run (1 hour or so), you will realize how strong your character has become.

Step 1. (Optional) Play as the Commando on DRIZZLE difficulty.

In this step, you will learn a bit about how the game works. After a few playthroughs, you should start to feel more comfortable with the mechanics and can start playing on RAINSTORM. Again, this isn't completely necessary to do - you can start with RAINSTORM immediately to begin earning Monster Logs.

In this step you will earn:

Lizard Bait

Step 2. Play on RAINSTORM difficulty.

This will be the bulk of your trophies. You are playing on RAINSTORM so that Monster Logs will begin to drop. You can play on MONSOON if you're feeling rambunctious. You will earn most of the trophies of these by just playing, but it's good to know where the bloated survivor and robot janitor are. See Finders Keepers and You Won't Regret It for the locations. Be sure to keep attempting at shrines until you get Better Luck Next Time and Lucky Devil .

In this step you will earn:

The Lone Survivor
Night Night
Master Hunter
Better Luck Next Time
Lucky Devil
Finders Keepers
You Won't Regret It
Seasoned Wanderer
Diamond Casket
Don't Mind If I Do
Endless Voyager

Step 3. Grind Whorl Drowns and Deaths

You more than likely haven't drowned any Whorls yet, or at least not nearly enough. Take this time to focus on that. Also, if you haven't died 50 times, now is the time to grind deaths.

In this step you will earn:

Sleepin' With The…
Sole Survivor

15 trophies ( 9  )

  • Defeat 20 lemurians in one playthrough.

Lemurians are the most common enemy in the game. On the first level, there will be little purple enemies - these are Lemurians. There are upgraded versions in different colors as the difficulty ramps up. Simply kill 20 in one run to earn this trophy. It is easiest to complete this on DRIZZLE difficulty.

  • Survive 40 minutes.

You need to have one run last at least 40 minutes. There is a timer in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. Remember that enemies get tougher the longer you survive, so it is best to continue defeating enemies and upgrading instead of sitting around on one level. If you reach the divine teleporter, you can continue with another level before teleporting to the final level if you're far under 40 minutes.

  • Die 50 times.

This may come naturally, or you may end up needing to grind deaths. You can check how many deaths you currently have in the Main Menu option "Scores and Unlockables" under the Stats tab. If you need to grind deaths, pick a low HP character like Huntress and run around until the first enemy spawns and let them kill you.

  • Kill a boss with "Lights Out."

The "Lights Out" ability is available with the Bandit. The Bandit is unlocked by completing the 3rd level. After you unlock the character, start a new run with the Bandit. When you reach the first boss, get its health down as far as you can and then use Lights Out ability to deal the killing blow.

  • Kill the Magma Worm, Wandering Vagrant, and Colossus.

At the end of each level, you will need to survive 90 seconds and defeat a random boss. There are more than just the 3 bosses listed for this trophy. It is also possible for the bosses to randomly spawn at when your difficulty bar reaches the top levels.

Kill these three bosses and you'll earn the trophy. You do not need to defeat all three during the same playthrough.

  • Fail a shrine 3 times in a row.

As you're exploring the levels, you will come across a shrine that reads "Press to offer for a chance of rewards..." These shrines will cost you gold you've earned. You need to fail a shrine 3 times in a row to earn this trophy. Since it is luck based, it may take several attempts to earn this one.

This is what a shrine looks like:

  • Pass a shrine 4 times in a row.

As you're exploring the levels, you will come across a shrine that reads "Press to offer for a chance of rewards..." These shrines will cost you gold you've earned. You'll need to win an upgrade at the shrine in order to "pass" the shrine. You'll need to win an upgrade 4 times in a row without failing.

This needs to be done in a single play through. But it does not need to be done in a single level or at a single shrine. It will actually require you to visit at least 2 shrines as they are destroyed after 2 successes. The price to retry a shrine increases with each attempt.

  • Find the bloated survivor.

You will find the bloated survivor in the "Hive Cluster" level. This is the level where the ground is pink. Traverse to the bottom-right-most point of the level. Walk over the bloated survivor and press to pop this trophy.

This is what the location looks like:

  • Find the robot janitor.

The robot janitor is in the final level, "Risk of Rain". On the left side of the map are 4 cargo bays. In one of those bays is a stack of containers. There is a container door that looks a bit different than the others. If you walk up to it and press , the door will open and you'll earn this trophy.

This is what the location looks like:

  • Collect 15 Monster Logs.

Monster Logs are only dropped on RAINSTORM and MONSOON. Playing on DRIZZLE will not get you any Monster Logs. Logs will drop at random when you defeat enemies. Collect 15 logs to pop this trophy.

  • Bank 20,000 gold.

There are several upgrades that will help you acquire more gold. But it will be easiest to earn this by earning many upgrades for your character. When you reach the final level, enemies will always be spawning and they will drop a lot of gold. Just keep killing enemies and not spending money on upgrades.

  • Unlock a golden chest with the Explorer's Key.

The Explorer's key is a power that you can use by pressing . The Explorer's Key opens all visible chests. I have only found golden chests in the final level. If you obtain the Explorer's Key early, be sure to not swap it out for a different power. Survive until the final level and locate a golden chest. Press select while standing near it and the chest will open, and the trophy will pop. I have found golden chests in two locations: one in the left area between two of the cargo bays and one in the locked Armory in the middle area.

This is what the golden chest looks like:

  • Collect 4 Keycards.

Keycards are found in the final level, "Risk of Rain". These keycards will unlock 4 rooms in the middle of the level. The keycards can be found in golden containers in the left area of the final level, as well as dropped at random. You do not need to collect these keycards to complete the game, but the items inside the locked doors will assist you during the final battle against Providence.

This is what the golden containers look like:

  • Drown 20 Whorls.

Whorls are the snail-like enemies. They have a large shell and fire energy beams. You will need a character with a lot of knockback power. The best character to use in this case is the Enforcer. The Enforcer has a Shield Slam ability that will knockback enemies quite a ways. This ability is used with

You will need to make it to the underwater level "Sunken Tombs". Note that this level will not always appear, so you'll need to restart if you make it to the final portal and haven't seen this level. Make your way to the bottom-left most area on the map. The area below this map does not exists and if you knock the Whorl off the platform, they will "drown" and die. Fortunately, if you fall down there, you do not die but you will respawn.

Using the Enforcer's knockback ability, you can push Whorls off the platforms until they drown. You should bait the Whorl close to the edge to knock it off as this will prevent you from killing it. You should also make sure you aren't actively picking up any attack upgrades that will passively kill faster, nor should you activate any drones that will attack as they could preemptively kill the Whorls before you can drown them.

There are other options. For example: picking a character with low damage, like the Commando, and try and earn boxing gloves which will increase your knockback power. This is a little more risky as you have to rely on chance to earn the boxing gloves instead of having the knockback ability always there as with the Enforcer.

Below are examples of the area you're looking for in "Sunken Tombs" as well as showing options of where to drown the Whorls:

  • Deal 5000 damage in one shot.

As you progress, you will become stronger and will be able to deal larger amounts of damage. Many characters have a skill that will deal 200+% damage. For instance, the Bandit's Lights Out ability deals 600% damage and the Sniper's Steady Aim can deal 2000% damage at full charge. Keep leveling up, and eventually you'll do big damage.
