Section 2. Introduction

Resident Evil 4 HD is a high definition remastered version of a game that first released in 2005 and subsequent releases on later dates. Resident Evil 4 is the first game where Capcom broke away from the old style gameplay; so even if you haven't played Resident Evil 4 before but have played Resident Evil 5, you should have a strong enough understanding of the controls and how to effectively combat the standard enemies. Since this is a PSN title there is no manual but the game is very friendly with tutorials to help you along. Most of the trophies are story related with all but one of those being boss fights.

Section 2.1 - Controls

The HD version comes with two different control types. The first is not an exact copy of the old PS2 version but comes close enough to it. The second control scheme seems to be more friendly for people used to a third person shooter and less of the original controls. If you've never played Resident Evil 4 but have played 5 I suggest going with the first control scheme as it is more similar.

Section 3. Walkthrough

This HD remake has all the content that the PS2 version had, but you will only need to focus on the main story and one of the side stories to earn 100%. If you're new to the game I advise to explore and pick up everything you can.

Section 3.1 - First Playthrough

This will be your first storyline playthrough. You will earn most of the trophies during this playthrough and you should earn the two missable trophies here. By the end of the game you should have a strong command of the controls and what weapons suit your playstyle. Once you complete your first playthrough be sure to save the cleared game data to your hard drive; having a cleared save data unlocks the first optional costume set, Professional Mode and many of the optional modes.

*If you have the EU version of the game you must play through on Normal to unlock Professional Mode.

Trophies Earned
It Begins With a Ring
Do Not Shoot The Water (Missable)
A Rock and a Hard Place
Secure the Ballistics
A Bloodline Severed
A Terrifying Assassin (Missable)
The Castellan Falls
The Ties That Bind
We're Going Home
What Are They Worth? (Missable)

Section 3.2 - Separate Ways

Separate Ways is 5 chapter side story depicting what Ada was doing behind the scenes while Leon was carrying out his mission. It is only a few hours long at best. Separate Ways is under the Extras tab on the main menu and will be unlocked once you have a cleared game save. Completing Separate Ways will unlock the Special 2 costume set which will make Professional Mode much easier.

Trophies Earned
The S Stands for Stylish!!

Section 3.3 - Professional Mode

In Professional Mode you will die a lot. Enemies are more aggressive and hit much harder while ammunition and herbs are less plentiful. Regularly save your game and if you feel you could've done a certain section easier, it'd be better to retry the area then to get stuck further down the road. Even if you obtained all bottle caps on your first playthrough I'd recommend doing it again as each time you earn a set you will be rewarded with money to spend on items or upgrades. The most important part of this run through though should be making sure you use the Special 2 costume set. The costume does nothing for Leon but will make Ashley not only invulnerable to damage but prevent the Ganados from carrying her away.

Trophies Earned
A Heart of Steel

Section 3.4 - Cleanup

If you failed to earn any of the missable trophies, now is the time to go and get them. The game does not have a chapter select but you can load a cleared save data and play through with all your upgraded weapons and equipment.

12 trophies ( 9  )

  • Ring the mysterious bell. What happens after that, is up to you.

This trophy is storyline related and cannot be missed. Near the start of the game in Chapter 1-1 you will enter the village and the locals will attack you. The bell will ring once you killed enough enemies, sending them away and giving you this trophy.

You just started the game and get thrown to the wolves. The townspeople will continuously spawn and try to kill you. There is not much to say here, kill them until the bell rings (should be around 30 enemies). There is a shotgun in the two story house to the left of the fire pit, but entering that house will summon a Dr. Salvador (chainsaw) who can take a lot more damage and can kill you in one hit. You can shoot him in the head repeatedly to stun him or use the shotgun to knock him down in one hit.

  • Summon the master of the lake. Don't rock the boat.

(Missable) This trophy is storyline related but can be missed and is very misleading. Near the end of Chapter 1-3 you'll find yourself at a lake. If you went down the other path first you'll be treated to a scene of some Ganado throwing a body into the lake. Go down to the docks and shoot the water until Del Lago appears and kills you, you'll die but will also get this trophy.

  • Outmaneuver the rampaging beast, El Gigante.

This trophy is storyline related and cannot be missed. Halfway through Chapter 2-1 you'll find yourself going through a waterfall and getting a key. After getting the key you'll find yourself in an area you already visited but will be attacked by your first El Gigante. Bring the giant down to earn this trophy.

El Gigante is strong but slow, his attacks can be easily dodged if you recognize what he is doing.

Keep El Gigante away from you and shoot him as much as you can until his drops to his knees and a giant parasite pops out. Approach El Gigante and press to mount him and then mash or to slash the parasite. Repeat the shooting and slashing until he dies. If you have any Flash Grenades you can use them to stun Gigante.

    Other
If you're close to him when he dies, he can land on you and kill you. Either stay away from him or be prepared for the contextual dodge command.

If you rescued the dog from the bear trap in Chapter 1-1 he will show up and help you by distracting El Gigante.

  • Rescue the president's daughter, Ashley. Afterwards, the real fun begins.

This trophy is storyline related and cannot be missed. At the end of Chapter 2-1, shortly after the El Gigante fight you'll enter the church where Ashley is being held. Once you find her you'll earn this trophy.

  • Defeat the village chief in battle.

This trophy is storyline related and cannot be missed. Near the end of Chapter 2-3 you'll take a long tram ride and shortly there after you'll approach a barn where you'll finally have your vengeance against Bitores Mendez. Defeat Mendez to earn this trophy.

Bitores Mendez isn't as hard as your previous encounters would have you believe.

    Fighting
Keep Bitores at a distance and shoot his spinal column. If he gets close enough he will grab you, so stay away as best as you can. Once he's taken enough damage his body will split into two. He will now move around by swinging from the support beams. A shotgun blast will knock him to the ground; or you can move to the upper levels and utilize a blind spot in the right side corner, Bitores won't be able to hit you but you will be able to shoot him.

  • Turn the tables on Verdugo, the right hand of Salazar.

(Missable) This is a storyline related trophy but can be missed. Near the end of Chapter 4-1 you'll fall victim to one of Salazar's traps and be down in the depths of the castle. Salazar will call you and inform you that his right hand (which comes off) is coming to kill you. Verdugo is an optional boss but you must kill him to earn this trophy.

Verdugo is the only optional boss fight in the game and is surprisingly easy if you're prepared. You will also encounter him before you can actually fight and kill him.

    Pre-Fight

You'll be walking down a winding hallway and he will attack you, you can dodge his attacks with contextual dodge commands. Your goal in this part is to reach the far room and reboot the power to the area. Once you turned the power on the door will seal, approach the door and Verdugo will enter the area.

    Fight

All of Verdugo's attacks have contextual dodge commands, so be ready when he's near. Scattered around the area are giant red cylinders or Liquid Nitrogen, these are the key to defeating Verdugo. When he gets close interact with the cylinders and Verdugo will get frozen; when frozen he will move very slowly and take increased damage. Do not bother attacking him if he is not frozen as it is a waste of ammunition.

    Other
Verdugo can be killed in one hit with a Rocket Launcher. You can pick up a Rocket Launcher in Chapter 3-3 or buy one from the Merchant in the start of Verdugo's area. He will need to be frozen for it to be a one-shot kill.

As said previously this fight is optional. Once the doorway opens, the power is rebooted and the elevator in the area is operational. You can escape from Verdugo if you are unable to kill him, however you will miss out on this trophy.

  • Defeat Salazar, and make your escape from the castle.

This is a storyline related trophy and cannot be missed. At the end of Chapter 4-4 you'll be racing up a tower to confront Salazar, once you make it to the top you'll see a Merchant a Typewriter and a doorway leading to Salazar. Defeat the hideously changed Salazar to earn this trophy.

Salazar is the trickiest boss fight in the game and has a lot going on at once.

    Tentacles
Before we go on understand how this room is, you're on an elevated platform with two tentacles (one on each side) and Salazar's tentacle in the middle. Run to one of the sides of the room (I prefer the right side) to avoid Salazar's tentacle attack. If you are in the middle of the room he will do an unavoidable instant-kill attack. The tentacles will continuously attack you but every attack can be dodged with a contextual command. If the tentacle is too much for you to handle you can shoot it and it'll withdraw for a while.

    Fight
Look at Salazar's tentacle, that huge yellow eye is its weak spot. You will need to shoot it to open up Salazar's actual weak point. You'll know when you shot the tentacle if your attack releases a yellowish splash. After damaging the tentacle enough it'll keel over in pain and Salazar's weak point will open up (he's atop the middle tentacle). Attack Salazar until his protection covers him again. Now repeat shooting the tentacles eye and then attacking Salazar directly until he dies.

    Other
If you run low on ammunition you can drop down to the lower area. Salazar cannot attack you there, however there are infinitely spawning Las Plagas down there.

  • Defeat Krauser, your former partner, in battle.

This is a storyline related trophy and it's impossible to miss. At the end of Chapter 5-3 (after the U3 fight) you'll run into Krauser. Even though you've encountered Krauser you can't kill him just yet. You'll need to get 2 parts of the key before you can take him down.

The fight with Krauser is surprisingly simple. He'll shield most of his body with his arm growth, but you can still shoot his legs. Once you've shot his legs enough he'll fall to his knees. Run up to him and knife him, he'll retreat and put his shield up again. Repeat the process of shooting his legs and knifing him and he will go down very quickly.

  • Defeat Saddler in battle, and escape from the nightmare.

This is a storyline related trophy and it's impossible to miss. This fight is most of the time you'll spend in Chapter 5-5. Leon will have Ashley wait at the bottom of an elevator as he goes up to finish Saddler.

Despite the area you fight on being small, only his ranged attack has a dodge command.

    Fighting

Saddler has numerous weak points but only one that actually hurts him. On the outside of each leg he has a small eyeball; you need to shoot this eyeball to stun him. Once he's stunned, run up to him and press to knife his weak point. Each eyeball can only be shot twice before it disappears completely. Use grenades or the explosive barrels to help you take out the eyes on his hind legs. Once you've stabbed him enough, Ada will show up and throw a Rocket Launcher into the area. Pick up the Rocket Launcher, aim in and shoot Saddler with it to finish him off.

    Other information
This battle area has two parts and the bridges connecting the two platforms will retract at given intervals. The red/green light show if the bridge is up or down and if the green light blinks it will retract soon.

There are two raised platform with levers on them. Let Saddler get close and pull the lever to slam a stack of beams into Saddler and get a free knife attack against him.

  • Clear the game on the highest difficulty.

To earn this trophy you will need to complete the game on Professional difficulty. To unlock Professional you will need to beat the game once and have a cleared save data. If you have the EU version you must beat the game on Normal, beating the game on Easy will not unlock Professional. With that done you can start a new game on Professional difficulty; you cannot start this with a New Game +. Professional not only has the enemies hit harder and take more damage, but will give you less ammunition and items. Having the Special 2 costume available will help with this playthrough as it will make Ashley invincible and you won't have to worry about her; however if you play with the special costumes the merchant will not sell you the body armor in Chapter 5. Beat the game and this trophy will pop at the post game save screen.

See the Professional Mode Help post for hints on specific hard areas.

  • Acquire all of the bottle caps in the game.

(Missable) To earn this trophy you will need to earn all 24 bottle caps in the game. There are 4 shooting sets and 5 shooting galleries in the game. To open up all the shooting sets you'll need to visit at least 4 shooting galleries. The shooting sets are labeled as; A, B, C and D.

If you do not visit at least 4 of the shooting galleries, you will not open up all 4 shooting sets.

    Objective
You can gain up to 5 bottle caps in a shooting set by earning 3000+ points. You will need to earn 3000+ points at least 5 times for each bottle cap. The sixth bottle cap is earned by hitting all 25 enemy targets without hitting any Ashley target or earning a score of 3500+; the Salazar target does not count for the 25. The shooting set will change how the targets appear after you earn 4 of the normal bottle caps.

    Scoring
    Male Ganado = 50 Points (100 Headshot)
    Female Ganado = 50 Points (200 Headshot)
    Salazar Head = 500 Points
    Ashley Graham = -1000

To have a Salazar head target appear, you need to hit 5 targets consecutively without missing. The back of the shooting gallery will open up and the target will move from right to left before disappearing.

    Shooting Gallery Locations

Chapter 3-1 In the foyer room after the Ashley Crank room.

Chapter 4-1 Next to the merchant after taking the ridable car.

Chapter 4-2 Next to the merchant at the start of the stage.

Chapter 5-1 Before entering the Regenerator area.

Chapter 5-3 At the Merchant after fighting U3

    Shooting Set A

    Shooting Set B

    Shooting Set C

    Shooting Set D

  • Acquire all of the costumes in the game.

Resident Evil 4 HD has three costume sets in the game. The first costume set is the default costume set as Leon and Ashley go through the game. The second costume set (Special 1) is unlocked upon completing the game once; this costume set has Leon in his old RPD outfit and Ashley dressed like white trash. The third costume set (Special 2) is unlocked by completing Separate Ways; this costume has Leon in a Zoot Suit while Ashley is wearing a full suit of Medieval Armor. The third costume set helps tremendously on Professional difficulty as it completely removes Ashley as a liability.
