Following the success achieved by the remake of Resident Evil 2 in 2019, Capcom continues the reimaging of yet another of its most acclaimed games of the PS1 generation: Resident Evil 3. This remake starts from the base left by its predecessor, rebuilding several of the classic locations, while at the same time offering new scenarios and mechanics to enjoy. While the new mechanics make this game a little more action oriented, it does not completely leave the survival horror genre.
With regard to the roadmap, for those who played RE2 Remake, you will feel right at home since the list is quite similar, and as is common with the rest of the games of the series, we are talking about multiple runs in different difficulties (including a speedrun trophy), collectibles and some other missable trophies that you must be careful of. However, the game itself is shorter than its predecessor; also, the dodge mechanics included will allow you to leave unharmed of most of the encounters (even those carried out against Nemesis).
A side note about the new “dodge mechanic”
As in the original 1999 game, RE3 remake introduces a dodge mechanic which can be used against all enemies, and whose understanding is highly recommended if you want to be able to deal with Nemesis (especially at higher difficulties), considering that escaping is not an easy option to achieve.
The dodge can be used several times and consecutively (there is no reload bar as in other games) but be aware that it takes a recovery time after performing it. There are two variations of the dodge mechanic:
- Normal Dodge is executed by pressing R1 and can be used in conjunction with the left stick to perform a basic escape maneuver, helpful in gaining some space between Jill and her enemies. Additionally, if you press R1 while running, Jill will perform a forward escape maneuver, while if you press R1 during the aiming animation, Jill will do a backward maneuver to gain some space.
- Perfect Dodge This dodge is performed by pressing R1 at the right time before an enemy's attack connects. If you did it properly, the screen whooshes white, time stops and Jill will perform an escape maneuver that will allow her to either continue with the walking / enemy's running momentum, or, if you hold down the trigger button while this happens, allow you to attack the enemy's weak spots with the weapon you have equipped (including the knife). Two important points: i) Perfect dodge can be used while running, standing or even when aiming; and ii) The timing differs between difficulties, so it is advisable to practice it on higher difficulty settings if you want to be better prepared for later.
Finally, RE3 reintroduces an escape mechanic called Emergency Escape. This action, which is basically a quick time event, while it does not prevent the damage taken, it certainly reduces it. A tip related to this point is that if you don't like pressing buttons quickly, you can change the Action Prompt Input type to "Hold" in the Control Settings option.
New All In-Game Rewards DLC
On August 5, Capcom released a new payable DLC which allows you to unlock, among others, all the difficulty modes, the shop, and all the items obtainable within, decreasing the amount of playthroughs needed, as well as the platinum difficulty in general. Despite this, the Roadmap will continue to consider the experience without DLC.
Step 1: Assisted run while getting all collectibles related trophies, one or less recovery items and getting any other missable trophies.
Start a new game and select the Assisted difficulty. You will use this opportunity to get acquainted with the game and its new mechanics, learn the location of items (especially Key items), and gather all the collectible trophies. In this difficulty, enemies are slower and weaker, your life regenerates from Danger to Caution state automatically and Nemesis is less fierce.
Similarly, I suggest using this opportunity to also get the I Might Need These Later! trophy, which requires beating the game while using one or less recovery items (You might feel "forced" to use a recovery item during an specific event early into the game though, which is not really neccessary under Assisted, it is for this reason that the trophy specifically points to "one or less").
In addition, and in preparation for step 1.5, I recommend performing three manual saves in the following places:
- Donut Shop - Objective: Return to the Subway Station
- Hospital / Makeshift Sickroom – Objective: Defend Jill
- NEST 2 / Storage – Objective: Get the Vaccine
Finally, regarding collectibles, you can refer to the “Additional Resources” section for a detailed guide on where to find them.
At the end of this step you will have earned the following trophies:
First Escape
Somebody to Lean On
Escape from the City
Hello, Charlie! (Missable)
Basic Chemistry
Gunsmith (Missable)
Get Organized (Missable)
Power Stones (Missable)
Nemesis Down
Nemesis Down?
An Unfortunate End (Missable)
The Carlos Express
I Don't Feel So Good
Two For One Deal (Missable)
I Need a Hero
RE: Master of Unlocking (Missable)
Kendo's Armory (Missable)
The Pursuer
Goodbye, Charlie! (Missable)
Electric Slide (Missable)
Nemesis Down!?
Nemesis Down!!!
Bookworm (Missable)
I Might Need These Later! (Missable)
Step 1.5: Getting the Infinite Rocket Launcher weapon.
After you beat the game for the first time, you will be able to buy items from the in-game shop by spending points obtained while completing the game’s Records, which are 58 accumulative trials similar to the ones found in Resident Evil 2 remake.
An important thing to mention is that these Records are recorded on your player profile, so you can reload your manual save (or autosave) and continue farming them at any point during the game. One small detail, however, is that while you can check your progress at any time during the Pause menu, you can only buy items from the Title Screen (under the Bonus Section).
The reason for having this intermediate step is that you can get extremely helpful items, which will make the time and difficulty of the next steps considerably less. In addition to this, none of the items block any trophies!
It is extremely important that you -at least- get the Infinite Rocket Launcher (62.400 points). However, I recommend taking the time to farm enough points to also get: Recovery Coins, Iron Defense Coins and the two Hip Pouches. Optionally, you could also get the S.T.A.R.S. Field Combat Manual to make your dodges easier to perform, something that will serve you a lot during the Nightmare and Inferno difficulty runs in which enemies are much more aggressive (If you followed step number one correctly, you'll have just over 14.000 points to spend).
For more details on the costs of each of these items, as well as some videos with the suggested places to farm kills, check out the Additional Resources section of the guide.
Step 2: Second assisted run without using the item box
While you can set aside this run to the end, I recommend taking the opportunity considering that you find yourself farming points for the items mentioned above. Two arguments that support this run here are that: 1) You get 7.000 points for beating the game without using the item box; and 2) You will be fresh in terms of the positioning of the items (which is different during Nightmare and Inferno difficulties).
At the end of this step you will have earned the following trophy:
Minimalist (Missable)
Step 3: Beat the game on Hardcore to unlock Nightmare Difficulty
With the Infinite Rocket Launcher at your disposal (and if possible, armed with the suggested additional items), make a speedrun in Hardcore to unlock Nightmare difficulty. An important difference from Resident Evil 2´s Hardcore mode is that the game performs periodic autosaves the same way it does in lower difficulties. This means you can beat the game without having to perform any manual saves at all.
At the end of this step you will have earned the following trophies:
Survivor
Veteran
Additionally, If you didn't do it during your “No Item box” run (and manually saved five times or less), chances are you'll also get the following trophies during this step:
Sensational Work! (Missable)
Sprinter (Missable)
If for some reason you didn't get these trophies, don't worry, as we'll definitely get them during step 5.
Step 4: Beat the game on Nightmare to unlock Inferno Difficulty
Nightmare is a new difficulty added to the game. In this mode, key items are repositioned (however, this doesn’t affect items necessary for the story progress); enemies are more aggressive than in Hardcore difficulty, take more damage, their positioning is different, and the game throws you (literally) more of them at any time. Similarly, Nemesis is even more aggressive than in previous difficulties.
However, since you can use the infinite Rocket Launcher (and the other items recommended), this run should not present any greater difficulties; plus, the game continues to make periodic autosaves. Take this opportunity to familiarize yourself with the new positioning of enemies and items for your Inferno playthrough.
At the end of this step you will have earned the following trophy:
Conqueror
Step 5: Beat the game on Inferno Difficulty with an S rank
Inferno is the last difficulty of the game, and as in Nightmare, the aggressiveness and speed of enemies has been escalated an additional notch. However, unlike the latter, the game no longer makes periodic autosaves and you'll also find fewer healing items, typewriters and item boxes throughout the game.
In this step, we will be focusing on getting an S rank which can be achieved by beating the game in less than 2 hours, while manually saving five times or less. While this may seem scary at first, the experience gained in the other difficulties, as well as the help of the infinite Rocket Launcher and the rest of the purchased items from the in-game shop, will make this mission a less scary one. Check out the trophy description for additional tips on suggested places to make your manual saves.
At the end of this step you will have earned the following trophies:
Dominator
Jill Valentine (Missable)
Step 6: Clean up
If you are still missing any of the trophies, use this step to get them.
At the end of this step you will earn the following trophy:
So Long, RC
