Introduction:

Q*Bert Rebooted is a more modern remake of the classic game of Q*Bert. There are some notable changes in the form of new enemies and new patterns of movement but the game at its core remains the same: Jump on a bunch of cubes to change them to a target color.

The most noticeable change is that the cubes are no longer 4-sided but now 6-sided, which opens up new possibilities in terms of how you move around the boards. Unfortunately, the controls for this game leave a lot to be desired; expect significant control issues that will send you in unexpected directions, up to and including jumping right off the board.

Walkthrough:

Most of the trophies are for things you would do through the course of natural play anyway....jumping on discs, dying, collecting gems etc. There are two game modes: Classic and Rebooted.

The following trophies can only be obtained via playing Q*Bert Classic:

  • Classic Master
  • Ugg!
  • Green Machine

The following trophies can only be obtained via playing Q*Bert Rebooted:

  • Newbert
  • Q*Bert-o-rama
  • Coin-Op Collector

The following trophies can be obtained in either game (it's highly likely you'll earn these just through the course of natural play.):

  • Snake Surprise
  • Down for the Count
  • Disc Rider

9 trophies ( 5  )

  • Complete Level 5 in Q*Bert Classic

Each level of Q*Bert consists of four rounds except for round 5, which is 3 rounds. You start off with 3 lives, Extra lives are earned by scoring 8000, 21000 and 34000 points.

**IMPORTANT NOTE**: Q*Bert classic has NO pause function and worse, pressing at any time will end your game and bring you right back to the title screen. There is no confirmation or anything, press and it's game over. You have been warned.

In the first level, jumping on the cubes once changes them to the target color. They do not change back unless Sam (a little green monster) lands on them. Sam cannot hurt you and you can jump on him any time to kill him.

In the second level, jumping on the cubes once changes them to a different color. Jumping on the cubes a second time changes them to the target color. They do not change back unless Sam jumps on them. Sam jumping on them will send them back one color.

In the third level, jumping on the cubes once changes them to the target color. Jumping on the cubes a second time will change them back to their original color. Sam jumping on them will also change them back to their original color.

In the fourth level, jumping on the cubes once changes them to a different color. Jumping on them a second time will change them to their target color. If you or Sam jumps on them, the cubes will change back one color.

In the fifth level, jumping on the cubes once changes them to a different color. Jumping on them a second time changes them to their target color. If you jump on them again, they will change to their original color and you will need to jump on them twice to hit the target color. If Sam jumps on them, they will change back one color.

The trophy will pop when you complete all 3 rounds of level 5.

  • Complete Q*Bert Rebooted

There are 40 levels to Q*Bert Rebooted and each level has 3 rounds. You can earn one star just for completing each level and you can earn additional stars by completing the level in a certain amount of time, along with earning a certain amount of points. Note that you can only earn one star at a time; if you want to earn all 3 stars in a level, you will have to play the level at least 3 times.

Chunks of levels are gated off: You will need to earn a certain number of stars to get to the next group of levels but you do not need to earn 3 stars in each level to complete the game. It's up to you to decide which levels to re-play in order to earn additional stars.

While the difficulty ebbs and flows throughout the game, the difficulty spikes dramatically at about level 36. While levels 36 and 37 are difficult but manageable, levels 38 and 39 are absolutely brutal for most people. Not only are the levels poorly designed but they introduce new gameplay elements without warning that are not seen in any other level. Level 38 has an invisible transporter that seems to be glitchy/unreliable and in level 39 the red balls have the ability to bounce in any direction, including backwards. These gameplay elements, the poor design of these levels, and the poor controls in this game essentially make beating these levels more luck than skill. Fortunately level 40 is much more reasonable and, while challenging, is still a walk in the park compared to levels 38 and 39.

Discussions and videos for level 38 can be found here and Discussions/videos for level 39 can be found here.

Again, you do not need to 3-star every level for this trophy. As long as you earn enough stars to unlock all 40 levels, just making it through the levels is sufficient for the trophy requirements.

  • Unlock all of Q*Bert's skins

Throughout the game you will be able to collect gems that will appear on the board at random, along with during bonus rounds. These gems can be used to unlock Q*Bert skins.

When on the main map, press the options button to bring up the character select screen. There are 8 skins to be purchased, and the trophy will unlock after you purchase all 8 of them. You will need to earn 2400 gems to unlock all 8 skins.

  • Get crushed by Coily 25 times

Coily is the big snake that comes out of the purple egg, you will earn this through the natural course of play. Hitting the egg itself does not count. You need to die by the snake.

  • Collect 30 green freeze balls in Q*Bert Classic

There are small green balls that will randomly drop as you play through each level. Collecting them will freeze the enemies on the board for a few seconds. During this time, you can travel through enemies without dying, and no new enemies will spawn. Collect 30 of these for the trophy. Again, you will likely earn this through the natural course of play.

Note that collecting the red or purple ones will kill you, you want to avoid those.

  • Ugg!

Get smashed by Ugg 25 times

There are two purple enemies that spawn from the bottom of some worlds in Q-Bert Classic, starting with world 1-3. Wrong-way spawns from the bottom left and Ugg spawns from the bottom right. Get killed by Ugg 25 times for this trophy. Hitting Wrong Way does not count.

Neither Ugg nor Wrong Way appear in Q*Bert Rebooted, this trophy must be earned in Q*Bert classic.

  • Collect 5,000 gems

Gems will randomly appear as you make your way through each board in Q*Bert Rebooted, they can also be earned during the bonus rounds at the end of each level. Gems cannot be earned in Q*Bert Classic. You will need to collect 5,000 of these gems.

EDIT (6/4/2015): This trophy was previously glitched and unobtainable, but is now working properly. If you have already earned over 5,000 gems, play any random level and the trophy will pop when you collect another gem.

  • Die 100 times

Self-explanatory. You will earn this through the natural course of play. If you're good enough to make it through both Classic and Rebooted without dying 100 times, you're probably not reading this Guide.

  • Ride 50 discs

Discs are the little circular spinning things that appear in each round. If Coily the Snake is close enough to you when you hop on one, he will jump off the level to his death. Jump on 50 of these for the trophy. Again, you will earn this through the natural course of play.
