Introduction

Imagine a game with graphics nearly as good as Minecraft. A game with a plot nearly as immersing as flOw. A game with trophy descriptions so long that your PS3 will have a scrollbar so that you can read it all. A game with image rendering almost as good as projecting a classic gameboy game onto a movie theatre screen. A game with a trophy list that was likely written in a foreign language, and then translated by a game of telephone before it became the atrocity you now see in English. Welcome to Proteus!

The game is a small area, comprised of one or more islands, randomly generated each playthrough. There are a handful of landmarks scattered about with blatant disregard, including a circle of rocks, a cabin that you can't walk inside, and some other stuff not worth mentioning. You can look at the pretty flowers (that look like crosses/plus signs due to the rendering). The game's most prominent feature is that the days cycle, and things look slightly different during day/night, and also in different seasons.

On the plus side, the game is free on

Walkthrough

Step 1: Explore and see...pixels

The very first thing you should do is go into options and set your "Field of view" to the maximum (110). This will allow you to view more on the screen, which helps for Generall Historie of Plantes and other trophies.

Each playthrough has a map that is randomly generated, so none of the videos are going to perfectly match up your game's map setup. This also makes it hard to write or follow an exact walkthrough.

Somewhere on the map, there is a circle of ruins (rock ruins or perhaps tombstones). As you explore, and rub up against tombstones, a white light will glimmer and move to that circle of ruins. When you have done enough, there will be a glowing circle within the circle of ruins (the glowing circle first appears on the first night, and then stays there for the rest of the season). Each time you enter the glowing circle, you move to the next season. You start on the first season (Spring), and after entering the glowing circle three times (the middle seasons being Summer followed by Fall/Autumn) you will arrive to the Winter season. After a few minutes of Winter, the games end sequence will begin, completing a playthrough.

In the first three seasons, you can explore for as much time as you want. We will be using these seasons to explore and get most of the trophies out of the way. At the same time while you are working towards these miscellaneous trophies, you will be marking things off of the plant checklist (which you can find under Generall Historie of Plantes). The fourth season (Winter) will have limited time however, so you will need to be ready to move fast before the game's ending triggers automatically.

Here is the breakdown of what to do in each season:
Spring: Get the Beachcombing & The Garden of Forking Paths trophies, and then continue working on the plant checklist. Before entering the glowing circle, stand close to it for nearly two minutes to unlock The Circular Ruins.

Summer: Get the Unraveling the Landscape & Think Like a Mountain trophies, and then continue working on the plant checklist.

Fall/Autumn: Get The Hidden Door & Lost Gods of Albion trophies, and then continue working on the plant checklist. Before jumping into the glowing circle, be aware that you will have to act fast in the next/final season. Be sure to make a mental note of the quickest route to the beach using tall objects (as the ground will be covered with snow), particularly a spot with some seaweed.

Winter: Head as fast as you can to the beach spot you memorized last season, and glance at the seaweed. Hopefully you did enough exploring and the Generall Historie of Plantes will now unlock.

Regardless, at the end of your first playthrough you will unlock Silent and Void.

Step 2: Wrap it up
If you have anything left to clean up, now is the time to do so while completing the game another two times.

You will earn Turning Back for completing the second playthrough, and The Further One Goes for your third run.

  • Does it exist within the heart of a stone? Did I see it when I saw all things and then forget it?

Somewhere on the map is a circle of ruins, with a glowing white circle in the center (the glowing circle first appears on the first night, and then stays there for the rest of the season). You would normally run into the glowing circle to proceed to the next season. However, for this trophy you will instead stand close to the glowing white circle and wait around for a couple of minutes (as the day/night cycles fast).

Note that upon entering the circle of ruins, you will no longer be able to explore the map in that season. Upon entering the glowing white circle, you can then explore in the new season.

  • We had strayed into some region where the frontiers of some unknown world lay close about us.

This can only be attempted during Fall/Autumn at night. You can jump inside the circle of ruins glowing circle to change seasons, and stand near the glowing circle to shift it from day to night faster.

There are a few different spots that trigger events, and you need to trigger around three of these events to unlock the trophy. Some of the ones people have noted are the stone figure statues, and the cabin, both displayed in the trophy image. You can also trigger an event by finding the big tree, or the towers (see The Hidden Door). Harry94_ said he also triggered events at the graveyard and the tallest mountain.

Some have also said this unlocked while roaming aimlessly, which supports the notion that there are other events as well. If you know where the landmarks mentioned above are located on your map, by all means go to them. But in my opinion, you are better off roaming aimlessly in the proper season at night then trying to locate it at some other season/time and then trying to memorize the location.

NOTE: dcdfan and Calebroz have reported that this trophy pops at sunrise.

  • We have to find the door, daddy.

There are a couple of very large tree trunks scattered about. When you walk into one, you will move to the other. Keep walking back through the "door" and this will unlock.

  • To see a world in a grain of sand...

You need to circle the island completely, while walking on or near the sand. It will take a few minutes to completely circle the island, but just keep at it until this trophy unlocks.

    Notes:
If your map's island has a horseshoe design, you will need to walk the sand there as well. (credit to Metdevil)
If you have a lake within the island, you need to walk around that sand as well. (credit to orthmann)
If you have a second island, you will need to circle that one too (credit to Dipsy)

  • If delight may provoke men's labour, what greater delight is there than to behold the earth apparelled with plants?

Consider this your quest to find the perfect shrubbery, one that looks nice and isn't too expensive. You will have to travel the lands until you have seen all the plants in all four seasons. Make sure to find some seaweed on the beach during each season, visit both the graveyard and the big tree, and spend time exploring the landscape to find different trees/flowers/leaves/etc. In Fall/Autumn, be sure to find red roses in the graveyard. Just be sure to have spent considerable time exploring different areas of the map, such as 20 minutes in each of the first three seasons, and you should be good to go. In Winter you have limited time, so be sure to head straight to the beach and glance at some seaweed.

To make this task less daunting, go to the options menu in the game and adjust your "Field of View" to the maximum (110). This option only shows for PS3, and you will have a much harder time going for the trophy on a Vita. If you have both consoles, I strongly suggest playing on your PS3 for this trophy.

The lists below might be redundant or have some stuff missing. We have a written checklist followed by a video showing a ton of different foliage that will make any park ranger marvel in delight.

  • I dreaded walking where there was no path And pressed with cautious tread the meadow swath.

There is a path through the center of the (main) island, with various forks. You will need to walk the full forking path, tracing the path to each dead end and across the shortcuts as well, to unlock this forking trophy.

  • With tranquility, the small goes and the great comes.

Climb to the highest mountain peak you can spot, then press to have a seat. You can turn your controller off and walk away if you'd like. Around 18 minutes later this trophy will unlock.

This one eventually triggered the trophy.

  • Some of these developed stone rows or processional walks that channelled the approach of both the dead and those wishing to commune with them.

There are rows of tombstones directed from/to the circle of ruins. When you rub any tombstone while walking towards the circle of ruins, your controller will vibrate (if on PS3 with vibrate function enabled) and play a haunting tune. You need to rub yourself across every single tombstone on your distinct map walking in the correct direction, in order to unlock this trophy.

This is best done during the first two seasons (Spring or Summer) as you have the best view then. To start with, go to the circle of ruins, and circle it while rubbing up against all of the ruins as you go around. Then look for lines of tombstones directed away from the circle. Walk to the opposite end of one of these lines, and then as you head back (rubbing directly into the stones) you should hear the haunting tune and feel your DS3 vibrating. Proceed through all these lines from/to the circle, say in a clockwise order. That was the easy part, now you need to forage out further and find more lines of tombstones and do the same to all of them. On the random map I played, there were a few small remote islands in addition to the main one, and I had to find some tombstones on one of these remote islands to finally unlock this trophy. Note also that there are a few "landmark" tombstones which will not play music or make the DS3 vibrate.

  • There is a thing confusedly formed, Born before heaven and earth.Silent and void It stands alone and does not change,Goes round and does not weary. It is capable of being the mother of the world, But I know not its name.

Complete your first playthrough to unlock this. See The Further One Goes.

Fun fact from Cliff Clavin: The trophy description is a poor translation of the first half of Tao Te Ching verse 25, which was written in Chinese. This book was translated into many languages, and is the #2 best selling book of all time (outsold only by The Bible).

  • Turning back is how the way moves; Weakness is the means the way employs. The myriad creatures in the world are born from Something, and Something from Nothing.

Complete your second playthrough to unlock this. See The Further One Goes.

  • Without stirring abroad One can know the whole world.Without looking out of the window One can see the way of heaven. The further one goesThe less one knows.

Somewhere on the map, there is a circle of ruins (rock ruins or perhaps tombstones). There will be a glowing circle within the circle of ruins, starting on the first night (and then stays there for the rest of the season). Each time you enter the glowing circle, you move to the next season. You start on the first season (Spring), and after entering the glowing circle three times you will arrive to the Winter season. Position yourself in the middle of the glowing circle, put the controller down, go away and do something useful instead. After roughly 25 minutes, you will have progressed through all seasons and completed another playthroughs. Repeat again if needed.
