Introduction:

Out of the Box is a kind of modernized, simplified "Papers, Please" where you play as Warren, the bouncer at a nightclub called The Box. Your job is to quickly screen and either admit or deny the many people waiting in line for the club. Meanwhile, during these sessions and in between, you make choices which determine the outcome of a mafia-related storyline in the background. The mechanics are simpler than "Papers, Please," and the graphics and music are much better. A number of your choices affect the eventual ending of the story and there are at least 16 different endings, which are classified into Good, Bad, Medium or Medium Bloody.

The trophies are relatively straightforward but a few will require extra playthroughs to grind out the numbers necessary. The game does have a few typos and misspellings, as well as a few glitches but none that affect trophies. Overall, this is a fun but slightly repetitive game with an engaging story, great graphics and catchy music. I would encourage you to just play the game the first time through without any guidance but if you are interested in earning trophies in the most efficient way possible, the walkthrough below will guide you on which choices to make and when. Also, I made a Gameplay Tips and Day Guide that can be found here: LINK

Walkthrough:

Step 2: Play through the story to achieve the Good and Bad endings

By choosing to help Torres build the case against Harry Sullivan (Day 14), paying the child support throughout (Days 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, and 32), making sure the snitch does not talk (i.e. kill him) (Day 19), getting along with and saving Liz (Day 27), and not sending the underage girls to Vinnie (Days 16, 20, and 24), you will achieve one of the Good endings. You can then reload Day 27 using Choose Day from the Main Menu, and complete the final six days again without saving Liz, which will achieve the Bad ending. You can also use Choose Day to go back to Day 22 to earn the opposite trophy from the choice you made initially.

During this step, you could earn:

Hospital or Graveyard
Drunk friend
Papers please
Plata o plomo
Good job
Just beat it
Riot
Cocky
Kill the mole
Save Liz
Bastard
Honest
Betrayer
Bachelor party
Thief
Good final
Bad final

Step 2: Play through a 2nd time from the beginning (New Game) to achieve the Medium and Medium Bloody endings

The simplest way to do this is as follows: Refuse to help Torres build the case against Harry Sullivan (Day 14), pay the child support throughout (Days 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28 and 32), torture the snitch until he gives the Mole's name (Day 19), getting along with and saving Liz (Day 27) and sending the underage girls to Vinnie (Days 16, 20 and 24), you will reach an ending where you will have a choice in the final scene. If you choose Shoot, you will achieve a Medium ending, if you choose to work for Vinnie, you will achieve a Medium Bloody ending.

During this step, you could earn:

Massive party
Ghandi
Trump
Confess
Teenage
Medium final
Medium bloody final

Step 3: Cleanup and more playthroughs to grind out the final trophies

It is likely you will need several more playthroughs to earn the last 2-3 trophies. You can focus on accumulating these events to try to make it faster but it will still likely take you a few complete games.

During this step, you could earn:

Negotiator
Tough guy
Weak
King of the night

28 trophies ( 14  8  )

  • Beat the game.

As always, earn every other trophy and the Platinum is yours.

  • Congrats. You beat the shit out of 20 people. How does that feel?

Just as the description says, punch out 20 people. You will likely earn this naturally in the first of the several playthroughs necessary.

  • You let 20 drunk customers in. Do you really know what you're doing?

Straightforward, as the description says: Allow 20 drunk people into the club. This will usually cost you money in penalties but there are reasons to do this at times (for example, you are encouraged to admit drunks without penalty on St. Patrick's Day). You will likely earn this naturally through the several playthroughs necessary.

  • You've carded 100 customers. Maybe you belong in Arstotzka.

You will definitely earn this naturally early on. Asking to see ID is the thing you will do the absolute most in this game and you will easily reach 100. A nod to "Papers, Please".

  • You tried to reason with 100 customers. Do you believe in flower power?

This trophy is a bit of a grind and will likely take several more playthroughs to earn in addition to your playthroughs to achieve the four endings trophies. It will likely be the last one to earn for the Platinum as well. To achieve it, you must calm down people who are in an angry (red background) state by using the Talk () button. If you ignore people in line long enough, they become unhappy/impatient, then they either leave or occasionally become angry. Also, when you attempt to break up arguments between two people in line (also using Talk ()), the person you address may become angry at you. If you are able to diffuse this person's anger and calm them down, this counts as one towards the 100 needed. When I was actively trying for this trophy, I was able to get 1-4 of these per day so it took me 4-5 playthroughs total.

  • You've kicked out 100 assholes... And counting.

This is also a bit of a grind but not as bad as Negotiator. If you ignore people in line long enough, they become unhappy/inpatient. If you talk to them at that point, they will respond with something like, "I'm getting pissed" or "This line is so slow" or something else along those lines. Simply dismiss this person from the line at that point and you've got one towards the 100 needed. When I was actively trying to earn this trophy, I was able to get 4-8 or these per day but I got well over 100 before the trophy popped. I likely did all 100 in one sitting so keep this in mind if it's not popping for you.

  • You've taken 20 bribes. Have you ever considered a career in politics?

As the description says, you will be offered bribes and you need to accept 20 of them in one playthrough. I was sure I had accepted more than 20 overall bribes, but this trophy didn't pop until I had done so during a single playthrough.

  • You've made yourself several max capacity bonuses. Seems like the job suits you.

You will very likely earn this trophy fairly early on as you get the hang of the main game. As you admit more people, the club gets more full, as indicated by the bar on top of the screen. As it nears completely full, Donnie will tell you the club is full and to wait a minute to let anyone else in. You will receive a $50 bonus (up to 3 per day) each time you reach this point (don't overfill the club, though, as you'll be penalized). Do this several times, and the trophy pops at the end of a shift.

  • You've managed to let 500 people in the club. Keep up the good work!

This is a cumulative trophy that takes several playthroughs. You will get it naturally while earning the other trophies.

  • You've let 100 potential customers leave the line... And this is your reward!

Another trophy you will achieve naturally while going for the others. 100 people need to passively leave the line i.e. not dismissed by you. Especially while learning the game, and even after getting the hang of it, if people wait too long in line, they will become impatient/unhappy and will often leave. Also, after an argument in line, the people surrounding the two combatants often become upset/unhappy and this will also cause them to leave the line if they aren't admitted/denied soon.

  • Riot

There have been 20 brawls in your line. You better start showing who's boss.

Almost unmissable. There will naturally be arguments that break out in line, which you need to deal with. There will very likely be 20 in your first playthrough.

  • You've had to deal with 20 cocky customers. They just never learn...

Another nearly unmissable trophy which overlaps with Hospital or Graveyard. There will be people who will want to fight you, whether you try to talk them down or not. It will be nearly unavoidable that you punch out at least 20 of them during your playthroughs.

  • Weak

I thought you were a tough guy... But you've gotten your ass kicked 10 times.

When people in line become angry (red background) for whatever reason, if you do nothing, they will punch you and you will then automatically punch them out. This must happen 10 times in one playthrough.

  • You managed to calm down 20 customers, but don't let that get to your head.

You will earn this on your way to Negotiator. Calm 20 angry people successfully using Talk () and this trophy will pop.

  • Negotiating is not your strong suit. People have told you to eat shit 20 times.

This is along the same lines as Negotiator and Ghandi, except that when you attempt to calm those 20 angry people using Talk (), they don't calm down but stay angry and must be punched out.

  • You took the "chat" a bit too far with the snitch.

Following your shift on Day 19, Vinnie will call you to his office to torture a snitch. If you hold the jumper cables together too long, the snitch will die, earning you this trophy.

  • You managed to make the snitch confess... But is that what you wanted?

Following your shift on Day 19, Vinnie will call you to his office to torture a snitch. Hold the jumper cables together just long enough for the snitch's face to change once, then let go. Repeat this 3 times and he will give you a name for the Mole, thus earning you this trophy. This has implications for various endings.

  • Liz is still alive thanks to you. Now... Go and get her!

During your shift on Day 27, Liz will appear in line. When you talk to her, you will remark that you have a bad feeling about The Box today. You must send Liz away (deny her entry) to save her and earn this trophy.

  • You accused an innocent man. I suppose you're proud...

Following your shift on Day 22 (Valentine's Day), you will be briefly questioned by police, then taken downtown to look at a lineup. Say "Yes". that you see the suspect among the lineup and pick any of them to earn this trophy.

  • Thanks for being honest. No one deserves to go to jail for something they didn't do.

Following your shift on Day 22 (Valentine's Day), you will be briefly questioned by police, then taken downtown to look at a lineup. Answer "Why should I?" meaning you don't see the suspect in the lineup and this trophy is yours.

  • Wait a minute... Did Vinnie tell you to give that letter to your parole officer?

At the beginning of your shift for Day 25, Vinnie will give you an envelope meant for the Los Locos negotiator. You won't have the opportunity to give that envelope to its intended recipient until Day 26. Following your Day 25 shift, you will meet with Torres. If you are helping him build a case against Harry Sullivan, you will have the opportunity to share the envelope with Torres (he will open it and give it back), earning you this trophy.

  • Once every blue moon can't be that bad, but don't get used to letting minors in.

Your shift on Day 12 begins with a party organizer who explains that some bachelor party attendees will be coming through the line tonight but one will be underage. If you let the underage guy in, you'll be penalized but will earn the trophy (and the bonus for letting in a full group).

  • Did you really have to listen to that monster?

During your shifts on Days 16, 20 and 24, Vinnie will appear in line and ask you to admit underage, pretty (i.e. thin) girls for him (they can be drunk or not, carrying bags or not etc.). If you do so on any of those three days, you will be penalized but will earn this trophy. This choice has story ending implications.

  • You helped Howard, for old time's sake. Don't get used to it.

During your shifts on Days 17, 21 and 28, Howard, your old friend from prison, will appear in line and ask you to punch someone that he picks out so that he can rob him. If you agree to this plan and pull it off, Howard will give you a cut and the trophy will pop.

  • I'm afraid you couldn't have done it any worse...

There are several different combinations of choices that will achieve this ending but one way is as follows: Pay the child support throughout, help Torres (parole officer) build a case against Harry Sullivan, don't make the snitch talk (or kill him), don't send the minor girls to Vinnie get along with but don't save Liz.

  • Well... At least you tried.

There are several different combinations of choices that will achieve this ending but one way is as follows: Pay the child support throughout, refuse to help Torres (parole officer) build a case against Harry Sullivan, torture the snitch and make him give the Mole's name, send the minor girls to Vinnie and get along with and save Liz. At the ending, tell Liz to shoot.

  • Is this what you really wanted? Keep trying.

  • Good work always pays off. Have fun!
