Modern Tales: Age of Invention is a hidden object adventure game developed by Orchid Games and published by Artifex Mundi, originally on PC in 2017 and ported to PS4 in 2019. You play as Emily Patterson, a girl in 1900 Paris who must locate her father and other missing scientists.

Trophy-wise, this is standard Artifex Mundi fare, with two interesting exceptions: You don't have to play the game on Expert and there's a timed HO trophy that spans several HO scenes. You don't need to worry about that, though – the trade-off here is that playing on Casual means that you can click around like crazy during HO scenes without fear of penalty, meaning you can blow through them in a minute or two apiece.

Trophy Walkthrough – by me!

Step 1: Play through the game on Casual, gathering all atom symbols

As with all Artifex Mundi games, there's no chapter select so everything must be done in a single playthrough.

Whenever you reach a new screen, find the atom symbol before doing anything else. Avoid pressing D-Pad while in puzzles and minigames. Doing these things will make sure you earn all the game-spanning trophies, meaning anything you may have to clean up afterwards will be quick.

For the HO scenes, unless you're specifically going for No Mistake , you will want to spam as quickly as possible while moving the cursor around, in order to get through the HO scenes as quickly as possible. As you're playing on Casual, there is no penalty for misclicks.

By the end of this step, you will have earned (in order):

Strong Impulse
Private Investigator
Road Rally
Extreme Sports
Tough Cookie
Good Deeds
Master of Engineering
First Date
Lab Rat
Daring Move
Family Matters
High Tech
Perceptive Eye
Raw Talent
Last Battle
Master of Science

...and if you got all collectibles:

Passer By

...and the miscellaneous:

Three In Three
Good Reflexes
No Mistake
Time Stands Still
Triple Luck

Step 2: Cleanup (optional)

Again, as long as you unlocked the game-spanning trophies in Step 1 (Collector , Perceptive Eye and Raw Talent ), cleanup will be fairly quick.

By the end of this step, you will have earned:

Platinum ! Congratulations!

25 trophies ( 13  4  )

  • Unlock every Trophy.

  • Start the energy emitter.

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

You will unlock this after activating both machines in the Pavilion at the beginning of the game.

  • Chase the hot air balloon with the automobile.

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

You will unlock this when you fix the car at the Eiffel Tower and set off in it, triggering a few cutscenes.

  • Use the parachute to save yourself.

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

You will unlock this after solving the parachute minigame, which involves moving rope knots around so there are no ropes crossing other ropes.

  • Repair the telegraph line.

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

You will unlock this when you use the wire repair kit with the telegraph pole at the sidetrack.

  • Enter the secret laboratory.

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

You will unlock this when you are finally able to turn off the electricity in the House and enter the laboratory stairs behind it.

  • Crash the airship.

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

You will unlock this during some cutscenes after you get the airship running.

  • Find and save your dad.

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

This will unlock during the cutscene after using the smelling salts on your dad.

  • Remotely bring the flying sphere back.

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

This will unlock when you solve the bell puzzle in the Tower and then approach the flying sphere outside of the Monastery.

  • Find 3 Hidden Objects within 3 seconds.

If you're utilizing the crazy click method to get through the HO scenes (and due to Triple Luck, you should be), then this should come naturally. Otherwise, take your time during an HO scene (like when you're working on No Mistake), then quickly click the items in succession. You cannot misclick between the items.

  • Complete a Hidden Object Puzzle without mistake.

This can be earned on any HO scene. Just be careful with your clicks and take your time to find items before clicking.

See Good Reflexes for a picture of a HO scene with all items circled. For that one, be especially careful with the pipe – the game is iffy about whether it wants to pick it up or not.

  • Complete a Hidden Object Puzzle without a hint.

    See Perceptive Eye.

  • Complete 3 Hidden Object Puzzles in less than 10 minutes.

If you're playing on Casual (and you should be), you don't need to worry too much about this trophy, as using the crazy clicking method – where you spam while moving the cursor around the screen – will get you through HO scenes in a minute or two each.

This does not need to be three consecutive HO scenes.

  • Complete a Hidden Object Puzzle in less than a minute.

You may actually get this naturally while playing through, as you're working towards Triple Luck.

However, below is a picture of a relatively small HO scene you can use for this trophy. It is fairly early in the game – it's the HO scene at the gazebo at the Mansion. Backup your save before starting it, just in case.

  • Complete all Hidden Object Puzzles without using a hint.

As long as you're avoiding D-Pad while playing, you will unlock this when you finish the HO scene that gets you the gold nuggets.

  • Complete a Minigame in less than a minute.

For the purpose of this game, a minigame is defined as a puzzle that has text instructions to it. There are many minigames that don't have them – they're all very short and do not count towards this trophy.

There's an easy minigame you can use for this trophy, fairly early in the game. In the Apartment, you must find and tape together a card. On the desk are more cards. Clicking on the cards will spread them out. Add your taped card to the cards, and put them on the desk left to right in the following order: Campfire / wheel / abacus / compass / taped card / telescope / train.

  • Complete 5 Minigames without skipping them.

    See Tough Cookie.

  • Complete all Minigames without skipping them.

As long as you're avoiding D-Pad during minigames, this will unlock after solving the minigame with the sliding dials and disconnecting the wires behind them.

  • Find one collectable.

    See Collector.

  • Find all collectables.

There are 30 atom symbols to find, one on each screen. They're somewhat transparent but at least they don't fade in and out of the screen, and hovering over them will show a "pick" option.

In the order they can be obtained:

    1. Pavilion – In the balloon in the background between the two men
    2. Paris Street – In top of the lamp post above the bike
    3. Apartment – At the base of the tank near the red curtain
    4. Eiffel Tower – In the back wheel of the car
    5. Automobile – On the dashboard, below and right of the steering wheel
    6. Path – On the smaller left rock, left of the skull mosaic puzzle
    7. Mansion – On the left side of the gazebo
    8. Balloon – Between window and picture on right
    9. Sidetrack – At the end of the tracks closest to the front of the screen, behind a plant
    10. Station – On the gold band of the train chimney
    11. Platform – In window of right-most car of train
    12. Waiting Room – Top of left window, just under the clock
    13. Town – On red roof of house behind the pillar
    14. Shop – Left of the anchor sign, on some garlic
    15. Port – Base of the crane left of the red building
    16. House – In the animal head left of the pictures
    17. Hangar – In the grating/pipes on the left bridge, directly under the stairs
    18. Workshop – On the side of the stand the plant is on, directly left of the open door
    19. Lab – Just right of the left vent/grating atop the stairs
    20. Airship – On the pipe above and right of the steering wheel
    21. Crash Site – On one of the beams on the left, just left and above the trunk
    22. Destroyed Airship – Just right of the man, under a broken window (must light room first)
    23. Camp – In the branches of the left tree
    24. River – At the base of the right tree
    25. Path to Monastery – In a tree behind some fallen branches right of the sled – just above the symbol is the "exit to Monastery" prompt
    26. Monastery – Left of one of the poles left of the stairs
    27. Headquarters – Just above and left of the right-most lamp
    28. Tower – On the stone wall below and left of the right ladder
    29. Landing Zone – Where the trunk and branches of the right tree meet
    30. Flying Sphere – On the table. Must first pick up bag and ring.
  • Finish the game.

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

This will unlock during the ending credits.

Secret trophies

  • Find Count Alexandre d'Albignac.

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

This will unlock when you place your telescope on the stand near the Eiffel Tower and look through it.

  • Help your friend Coco.

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

At the train station, Coco will ask for her umbrella, some pain relief and some hot coffee. Giving all three of these things to her will unlock this trophy.

  • Bring Albert to your father's house.

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

Albert is the man fishing on the Pier. Find him a landing net and he'll be open to talking to you about accompanying you to your father's house. When he does, you will unlock this trophy.

  • Get ready to fight d'Albignac.

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

This will unlock when you find and assemble Vlad's staff and anoint the crystal in special water.
