Maize is a first person adventure puzzle game developed by Finish Line Games, originally released on PC in December of 2016 and eventually ported to PS4 in September 2017. At the start of the game, you wake up in a corn field and embark on a journey to discover the story behind the farm and what you are doing there. The game is fun and quirky, although I did find it started to get a little boring and tedious towards the end, but the final few sequences of the game were enough to make the whole thing worth it though.

As far as trophies go, 12 of the 14 trophies are story related and can not be missed. There is one trophy for collecting all collectables, and another trophy for completing the game in under 2 hours.

Road Map

Step 1: Finish the Game in Under 2 Hours While Collecting all Folios

Without following a guide, completing the game under 2 hours is going to be quite difficult. The collectibles need a bit of searching for if you don't know where to look and there is a bit of back tracking and revisiting of locations required within the story that will take a bit of trial and error if you don't know what you're doing.

To get this done in one playthrough it is best to follow a guide. I have created a video guide which includes all folios and 100% trophies in under 2 hours, it can be found under Maize Runner.

During this step you will get the following trophies:

Country Living
Weird Science
Budget Security
Unsafe Procedure
Flipped The Switch
Fight! Fight! Fight!
The Tractor Incident
High In The Sky
Trolley Folly
The Power of Dance
The End

Step 2: Clean up or a Second Playthrough if Required

If you missed any collectibles during your first playthrough, you can go back via chapter select and get them now. If you didn't manage to complete the game under 2 hours your first time round, you will have to start a new game for Maize Runner.

During this step you may still need to get the following trophies:

Maize Runner
Garbage Collector

14 trophies ( 11  12  )

  • Finish the game in less than 2 hours.

This is the only missable trophy in the game. 2 very important things to note; you must do this in one sitting and time still counts while the game is paused.

While going for this, try not to get distracted by reading all the post-it-notes scattered around the game. These do help provide back story but are not required and will just slow you down. There are very few points in the game where you can actually fail. If you do fail at any point, you will restart at the last checkpoint. Don't panic if this happens. It's not the end of your speed run. You have leeway to fail once or twice and still come in under time, so long as you are speed running the rest of the game and not being a tourist.

Below is a video of a 100% playthrough of the game under 2 hours, includes all folio locations.

  • Obtained all folio items.

Folios are the games collectibles. These are random items scattered throughout the farm, from books and notes to simple rocks. There is a total of 75 of them. If you don't get all of them in your first playthrough, don't panic. You can go back via chapter select and clean up any you missed.

I have created a video under Maize Runner which shows all the folio locations in the game.

Secret trophies

  • Unlocked the farmhouse.

Story related and can not be missed.

This is achieved once you unlock and enter the farmhouse. The key to open the door can be found in the chicken coop on the opposite side of the farmhouse from where you start.

  • Met some new friends.

Story related and can not be missed.

Towards the end of chapter one, you will unlock the bunker door near where you started the game. A cut scene will play and you will be introduced to some new characters in the game. Here the trophy will pop.

  • Gained a grumpy sidekick.

Story Related and can not be missed.

A little after entering the bunker you will need to collect the parts required to assemble what will become your helpful (and annoying) partner. Once you have assembled the parts, the trophy will pop.

  • Tricked a security checkpoint.

Story related and can not be missed.

After putting together your bear sidekick, you will have to gather parts to create a dummy to get past the security cameras at the West Hook Checkpoint. Once you have found the hat rack, jumpsuit, sweat band and the etch-a-sketch, you will need to use the etch-a-sketch on the portrait at the start of the bunker level to sketch a face, then head to the bottom of the stairs found inside the door marked West Hook Checkpoint. Here, interact with the console you find to have vladdy fix it, then you will be prompted to put together the parts you have collected. Once the door is open, the trophy unlocks.

  • Obtained the fuel rod.

Story related and can not be missed.

After opening the security door for Budget Security, head across to the entrance with the blue light. Open the door and go up the stairs to find yourself in a loading bay area with water. Take the key off the table in the middle of the room, head to the right and open the toolbox with the key and take the hammer and knife. Head over to the left side of the room and open a cardboard box with the knife to find an egg, take the egg back to the table where you found the key and use the hammer on the egg to smash it on the table, revealing a lock pick. Head back to the left side and look for a cello case. Open it with the lock pick to find the nuclear fuel rod.

  • Re-started the nuclear reactor.

Story related and can not be missed.

You will come to a room with a button/switch hanging from the roof that you can interact with. Once you press the button, a timer starts. You have to make it through the small and fairly easy maze of pipes to find a bucket that you must put the nuclear rod into, then return to the button and press it to start the reactor. You have 2 minutes to do this and if you fail, you will restart the checkpoint. If going for Maize Runner it wont ruin your speed run if you have to restart the checkpoint, but try not to fail more than once. The maze is really very short so it shouldn't be a problem.

Once you make it back to the hanging switch and press it, a small cut scene will play and then the trophy will unlock.

  • Witnessed a battle of epic proportions.

Story related and can not be missed.

After opening the second security door using another dummy you built, enter the room you just opened and a cut scene will play out involving Vladdy and the Cornacabra. After this, the trophy unlocks.

  • Witnessed a series of unfortunate events.

Story related and can not be missed.

After exciting the bunker you find yourself back outside and needing to repair the tractor. Once you have it going, a cut scene will play showing Vladdy driving the tractor. After this, the trophy unlocks.

  • Raised both mysterious rings.

Story related and can not be missed.

After The Tractor Incident, follow the story and you find yourself back in the bunker with the ability to raise the second ring. Once this is done, the trophy unlocks.

  • Unconventionally unlocked security door.

Story related and can not be missed.

Later in the game you must unlock a third security door by constructing a dummy to fool the camera. After doing this. the trophy will pop.

  • Successfully stopped drone strike.

Story related and can not be missed.

Towards the end of the game, you will engage in a QTE dance style mini game. After completing this mini game, the trophy will unlock.

  • Sent the corn on their journey.

Story related and can not be missed.

Upon completion of the game and watching the credits, this will unlock.
