Introduction:

Lost Words is an absolutely charming indie game. It is a heavily story-driven side scrolling platformer with mild puzzle elements. There is no combat featured in the game.

The game is split between a narrative-driven section where you navagate through your journal, telling the 'real world' story of the narrator, and the other half being the game character in a fictional world known as Estoria, written by the navigator. The latter is the main game, but the two halves intersect and work really well.

The platinum is very straight forward, with only a few random trophies not tied to story progression and some collectible trophies that are very hard to miss. It is entirely possible to platinum the game in one run with only minimal reference to a guide in advance. If anything is missed, there is chapter select available once you complete the game to go back and pick up anything you've missed.

The game is currently featured on the Playstation Plus Extra Tier, and is well worth giving it a play over an afternoon or a couple of evenings.

Walkthrough:

Step 1: Complete the game

The game is charming and I would definitely suggest taking your time to enjoy it and read the text and listen to the very well done voice acting. It isn't a particularly long game and most of the miscellaneous trophies will come as you play. I have noted the location for each in the guide, so you may want to have a quick browse so you can get everything in one go. Most of the Fireflies will be out in the open, but if you do miss anything, clean up is a breeze through chapter select, and the game does tell you which sections you've missed Fireflies.

Step 2: Clean up

The below trophies are collectible and miscellaneous, and therefore technically missable, but most will come as you play. The guide notes where you need to go if you miss any, and the game lets you select Diary and Estoria sections independently from chapter select once you've completed the game once. I have listed them in the order you can potentially earn them.

  • Start something new

  • Find all the Fireflies

Fireflies are the main collectible in the game. They are small glowing white dots that are located mostly directly in your path. There are a total of 120 spanning the game, with 20 located in Chapters 3, 4, 5 & 6, and 40 in Chapter 8. Chapters 1, 2 and 7 have no Fireflies. Fireflies are only in the Estoria sections, there are none in Diary sections.

These are really easy to find and the game does keep track of your total in each Chapter. If you reach the end and don't have all 120, you can easily see in which Chapters you're missing Fireflies, and replay the Estoria sections. A guide shouldn't be needed, but for tips make sure to check the top of any ropes you climb and check for crawl spaces at the bottom of ledges. There are also a few that you need to use Words to raise and lower things to reach.

Addtionally, in Chapter 3 there will be one during the chase sequence with the Djinn - make sure you don't break the stones he throws at you as you will need to use these to jump up and reach one. And in Chapter 6, the swimming section, make sure you go down all the passage ways as they are scattered all over.

Below is an excellent guide from Lord Fenton Gaming in case you do run into any trouble in any of the chapters

  • Do all the washing up

In the Diary section of Chapter 5, you will come to a part where you need to wash some dishes. Make sure you put every dish and all the cutlery in the sink, then keep washing with the sponge until everything is moved over to the dishrack and the sink is completely empty.

  • Collect the items in Estoria 1

This is earned as soon as you land in Estoria for the first time in Chapter 1. It sounds more involved than it is. You need to collect berries for the story. There are actually 4, with 2 sort of hidden. You can progress without collecting them all, but they are very easy to find. From your spawn, go left for the first one. Then proceed to the right and there will be one on the top of a ledge. Drop down and pull out a stone, then crawl into the hole behind the stone for the third berry. Finally push the stone to the left where you use it to jump up and progress the level, and the final berry will be on the top as you climb.

  • Loop the page for 5 seconds

This can be done in basically any Diary section as long as you have a drop with no text underneath. Drop off, and you will reappear at the top. As long as you can move left or right without landing on text, you will start to loop. Keep this up for 5 seconds or more, and the trophy will pop.

I did this early in Diary 2, but again you can do it in almost any Diary section.

  • Light all the torches

In Chapter 8, you will reach a dark interior section. On the walls there will be torches. You can use Burn from your Word book to light these. There are a number of torches, but they are all quite visible so as long as you go slowly this shouldn't be a problem. The last torch is on the stairs as you ascend after the section where you pull out the 2 locks.

  • Help the villager

This must be done in the Estoria section of Chapter 2. As you make your way through the burning village, there will be a villager under a pile of wooden planks. He will call out to you, so it is really hard to miss him. You can run by him though, but for the trophy you need to stop, open your word book and select Rise to lift the wooden plank and free him. While you shouldn't need a reward for doing a good deed, in this case you will get a trophy.

Secret trophies

  • Collect every black asterisk

There are only 6 Black Asterisks in the game, and they are only in the Diary sections.

The first 2 are in the Diary section of Chapter 3. These will appear on the left side of the screen and you will need to grab them before the colored asterisks on the right. They would be technically missable if you purposely avoid them. The other 4 are in the Diary section of Chapter 6, as you traverse across the telephone wires. I don't think it is possible to miss these.

In the unlikely event that you finish the game and don't have this trophy, you can replay just the above two Diary sections from the main menu and pop the trophy.
  • Thanking You

This trophy is earned for watching the credits through in their entirety. This can be done organically once you complete the game, or you can click on Credits from the main menu and let them roll to completion to earn the trophy at any time.
  • Ring the bell in E1

This is earned shortly after visiting the village for the first time in the Estoria portion of Chapter 1.

After you leave you will have to travserse some platforms, and will eventually reach a bell. You need to jump to the bell to progress, so you can't really miss this part. To pop the trophy, however, you need to swing back and forth on the rope hanging from the bell until it rings.

  • Into the pie-byss

This must be earned in the Diary section of Chapter 4.

Partway through you will come to a text section with a pie. You need to push the pie off to progress and spawn the next section of text. The game sets you up to push the pie off the right side edge - from which it will then disappear into the abyss. Don't do this.

Instead jump over the pie so you are on the right hand side, and push it off the left side of the text. It will then drop off the bottom of the screen and reappear at the top and smash into the upper text, earning you the trophy.

If you miss this or push it off the wrong side, you will need to complete the game then replay Diary 4 section from the Chapter select menu.

  • Topple all the frozen Seakin

In Chapter 6, after the long underwater section, you will learn how to pass through barriers, then meet the Seakins. You will need to progress by ignoring them, until you come to a room with a giant ice vase. When you break it, everything will freeze. You now will find all the Seakins encased in ice. As you pass them by, they will automatically fall over. Every Seakin is in your path save for a collection that are on a platform - you can pass these by if you go under (but there's a firefly up on the platform anyway), but really this would be hard to miss. When you reach a cliff and drop down, you will be chased by a snow wolf and the final 3 Seakins are along your path. This trophy can't be missed unless you avoid the Seakins on the elevated platform.
