Ironclad Tactics is a hard to define game as it is a mixture of Tower Defense, Turn Based Strategy and a Card game. Although the game is a lot of fun and gives a great sense of achievement upon completing it, be aware that this is not an easy nor a fast game if you’re going for all of the trophies. The story is set in an alternate American civil war history where North and South fight each other with steam powered machines. The gameplay is turn based but plays out in real time so you’ll have to keep your wits about you. Before playing a mission you can select the cards that you will want to use and during the mission you deploy units on the field by choosing out of these selected cards. The order in which these cards will appear is randomly generated, so there is also a luck factor. By completing missions and secondary objectives you will earn new cards and by expanding your card deck you’ll give yourself more options to complete further missions and objectives. Complete all of the missions to beat the evil Dmitry and decide the civil war in your favor!

Step 1 – Story Campaign / Puzzle Mode
In the first step you will complete all campaign missions. The requirements to win a mission can be different, but most in most cases you will have to get ‘victory points’ which are earned by guiding your ironclads over the battlefield all the way to the other side. Pick the cards that you start the mission with carefully and if you fail keep tweaking your card deck based on your just gained experience. All missions have secondary objectives that most of the time are completely optional, but that will give you extra cards upon completion. It's advised to try and beat as many of these as possible to give yourself more options and possibly better cards. The objectives can be found with after you’ve selected a mission. Also be aware that it sometimes pays off to backtrack and complete objectives of earlier missions to get more cards. Also, note that some missions have a puzzle mode that will give you extra cards upon completion. Do these as soon as they’re available since they’re very easy and you’ll need to complete them for the Puzzle Master trophy anyway.

  • Rage Against the Machine
  • Senior Steam Engineer
  • Puzzle Master

Step 2 – Miscellaneous
Before starting a New Game Plus you will earn all of the miscellaneous trophies out of the way first, since none of these are available in New Game Plus. Don’t fret if you already did start it though, as you can switch between the regular campaign and New Game Plus at any given time using the globe icon in the bottom left of your screen. Chances are that you have already earned most, if not all of these trophies before even completing the main campaign, because the trophy requirements are the same as some of the mission objectives. If you did miss out on some of them it’s now time to earn these remaining trophies. You’ll soon find out that you're needing those extra cards in New Game Plus!

  • Historical Preservationist
  • Passive Aggressive
  • With Flying Colors
  • The Cow Came Home
  • Gone Native
  • Iron Pacifist

Step 3 – New Game Plus
The final step for your last three trophies is simply completing the New Game Plus mode. Although I must say that it’ll prove quite the task to complete this game mode. New Game Plus is a lot harder than the regular campaign and the CPU will get unfair advantages in every mission, like starting out with a few units on the board already and having a higher regeneration rate of ‘Action Points’. Be patient, learn from your mistakes and remember that most of the time it’s wiser to dodge your enemies rather than to fight them head on. You’ll get there eventually.

13 trophies ( 10  )

  • Embrace the future!

Story related and can’t be missed. You will obtain this trophy after completing the first 2 tutorial missions of the game.

  • Win "The North Lawn" without the Jefferson statue being destroyed

The North Lawn is the first real story mission and completing it without the statue being destroyed is one of the optional objectives. The statue is situated in the highest lane and CPU units with weapons will try to destroy it. Try to finish the mission as fast as possible by sending machines down the middle lane and station a few riflemen in the highest lane to protect the statue if need be. Also note that you can actually repair the statue with the field repair cards. The objective will get much easier once you unlock more cards later on in the story, but if you want to get it out of the way quick, please refer to the video below to see how it’s done with the initial card deck:

  • Destroy the warehouse sentry

Story related and can’t be missed. You will obtain this trophy after completing the sentry gun in the ‘Abandoned Warehouse – Savannah, GA’ mission. If you're having difficulties with beating the sentry gun, please refer to the video below for visual aid:

  • Win "North Boulevard" after scoring 8 VP with the mortar

This trophy can only be obtained in the mission ‘North Boulevard – Baton Rouge, LA’ and requires you to win the mission by using the mortar on the battlefield, rather than scoring points with ironclads. The key in doing this is to take possession of the flag in the lane above the mortar first to rack up Action Points early on in the mission. As soon as you have taken care of that, take possession of the mortar and defend your position while stalling the enemies in the other lanes. Please refer to the video below for visual aid on this trophy:

  • Win "Factory-Fort Endicott" after holding both flags for at least one turn

This trophy can only be obtained in the mission ‘Factory-Fort Endicott – Houston, TX’ and requires you to take possession of the flag in both middle lanes. This objective will be very easy once you’ve unlocked the ‘Armored Chassis’, so if you haven’t, try to obtain these first through playing other missions and objectives. The Armored Chassis doesn’t take damage from weapons that do only 1 point damage and every enemy in this mission can only deal that amount. Simply deploy the Armored Chassis only and equip them with a weapon and banner to take possession of the flags. Keep them there for one turn or even better, the remainder of the mission and you’ll obtain this trophy. Please refer to the video below for visual aid on this trophy:

  • Win "Madame Millie's Ranch" after scoring at least 1 VP with a cow

This trophy can only be obtained in the mission ‘Madame Millie’s Ranch – Silver City, NM’ and requires you to win the mission while you scored at least one victory point with a cow. This is another very easy trophy, but requires a little bit of luck of the draw. Make sure that you have a couple of maneuver cards in your deck and as soon as the mission starts click on all cows to get them to start walking. Use the maneuver cards to guide them around objects and/or enemies and once you scored a victory point with a cow beat the mission in any way you prefer to obtain this trophy. Please refer to the video below for visual aid on this trophy:

  • Win "Mojave Desert" with a deck using only the "Native" faction

This trophy can only be obtained in the mission ‘Mojave Desert – Death Valley, CA’ and requires you to win the mission by only using cards from the native faction card deck. Note that you are actually allowed to use neutral cards like field repair and maneuver too though. This trophy is easily obtained by avoiding combat and only using the native ironclads to speed to victory. Use the native ironclads own ‘dodge’ card, the ‘Maneuver’ card and the ‘Full Steam Ahead’ card to get your machines to the other side as quickly as possible and win the mission. Please refer to the video below for visual aid on this trophy:

  • Win "Baldwin Logging Camp" without attacking with ironclad weapons

This trophy can only be obtained in the mission ‘Baldwin Logging Camp' and requires you to win the mission without using weapons that can be attached to ironclads. This is the hardest of the miscellaneous trophies and requires a little bit of luck and moreover stupidity of the CPU to pull you through. Your best bet is to follow the same tactics that you used towards the Gone Native trophy, and avoid as much confrontations as possible. If you fail the mission keep restarting and eventually you’ll get a game where the CPU is not so relentless and you can speed and dodge your machines across the battlefield to victory. Please refer to the video below for visual aid on this trophy:

  • Win "The State Dining Room" on NG+ difficulty

Story related and can’t be missed. Unlocks after completing the fourth mission in New Game Plus ‘The State Dining Room – Washington, DC’. See the Legendary Steam Engineer trophy for more info on New Game Plus. Please refer to the video below for visual aid on this trophy:

  • Win "San Bruno Mountain" on NG+ difficulty

Story related and can’t be missed. Unlocks after completing the 'San Bruno Mountain - San Francisco, CA' mission in New Game Plus. This is probably the hardest level and trophy in the game. You will have to defend for 45 turns and prevent the CPU from getting 8 victory points. Here are some tips that will help you through:

    • It's imperative that you have captured at least one flag for the whole duration of the level. If you lose one, get it back as quick as possible. Raiders are the best units for this.
    • If you keep your machines stationary in the back, you will get slaughtered by the airship. Try to play aggressive.
    • Try to only deploy your units right after an airship attack from Dmitry.
    • Use manoever cards. They cost only 1 action point and can be a lifesaver in this level when you're low on action points.

Please refer to the video below for a visual aid on this trophy:

  • Solve all of the puzzles in the campaign

Some missions have a puzzle mode available, all of which are much easier than normal missions and can be completed within a minute. To see if a mission has puzzle mode, first select a mission with and then press , or you can look at the mission objectives by selecting a mission with and then press . Since completing the puzzle mode of a level gives you extra cards you should always get it out of the way as soon as you can. You can find puzzle mode in the following 5 missions:

    • Great Dismal Swamp – Suffolk, VA
    • Talladega Forrest - Talladega, AL
    • Main Street – Odessa, TX
    • Hassayampa Gold Mine – Wickenberg, AZ
    • San Bruno Mountain – San Francisco, CA

The trophy will unlock once you’ve completed all 5 of these missions in puzzle mode.

  • Complete the campaign on normal difficulty

Story related and can’t be missed. You will obtain this trophy after beating the main campaign’s final mission ‘Port of Seattle - Seattle, WA’. To see how to fight the final boss please refer to the video under the Legendary Steam Engineer trophy.

  • Complete the campaign on NG+ difficulty

After you’ve completed the main campaign you’ll be given the option to start a New Game Plus. In New Game Plus the CPU will get unfair advantages in every mission like starting out with a few units on the board and having a higher regeneration rate of ‘Action Points’, so this run will be a lot harder than your first. In this mode you’ll always lose if you go head on with CPU since you’re getting way less AP, so most of the time it’s easier to avoid confrontations and try to have your machines dodge and speed to the other side, while trying to delay the enemy forces as much as possible. You will need a lot of rearranging of you card deck, a lot of restarts and a bit of luck to get through this mode, but if you’re persistent you’ll eventually get there. Please refer to the video below to see how to beat the final boss:
