Introduction:

HoPiKo is a reflex heavy speed platformer that epitomises the 'easy to learn, hard to master' mantra. You'll mainly be using the to slingshot your character from a platform at the start of each level, to a designated goal which will move you onto the next level.

The levels are grouped together in 50 different 'Runs', with each run containing 5 levels (250 levels in total). Whilst this may sound like an overwhelming amount of content, the longest level won't take longer than 5 or 6 seconds to complete, if done correctly.

The difficulty lies in the fact you'll often only have a split second to decide the route you're going to take through a level. Delay too long, or make an imprecise 'slingshot' with the , and you'll find yourself back at the start of the run.

While this sounds like a frustrating task, because the levels are so short, once you know the correct way to traverse a level, it often doesn't take long to get back to the point where you died. You can then continue trying to figure out how to get past the next section.

Note: Until mid 2017, there was a technical bug with HoPiKo which rendered worlds 4 and 5 close to unplayable. The developers did eventually release a patch which remedied this, so the whole game should now run relatively smoothly. Therefore if you played the game close to release and gave up because of this, it should now be in a much more playable state providing you download the update.

Walkthrough:

Step 1: Play through the tutorial

You'll be forced to play through a very brief tutorial before you gain access to the first world of HoPiKo. There are no trophies obtainable in the tutorial, so just play through it as quickly as possible to get into the next step.

Step 2: Play through the game until you've completed the 50 numbered 'runs' in all 5 Worlds

There are a total of 5 Worlds in HoPiKo, each containing 10 numbered runs, for a total of 50 runs. Your goal here is to complete all 50 of these. During this step, it's not necessary to complete the Bonus Run, Speedrun, and Hardcore Run that's in each world.

At the end of this step, you should have obtained the following trophies:

First World
Second World
Third World
Fourth World
Fifth World
Perfect Timing
Collector
Try Harder
Mega Runner

Step 3: Complete one Bonus Run, one Speedrun, and one Hardcore Run

In each World of HoPiKo, there's one Bonus Run, one Speedrun, and one Hardcore Run that you'll unlock as you play through them (so there's a total of 5 of each of these runs in the game). For the purpose of obtaining trophies, you only need to complete a single run of each of these. I strongly recommend you do these in World 1, as they're by far the easiest ones to go for.

At the end of this step, you should have obtained the following trophies:

Hardcore Runner
Speed Runner
Super Drifter

Step 4: Cleanup

The only trophy I can conceivably think anyone would have left after the previous steps is:

Keep Trying

If (like me), you died well over 1000 times completing the previous steps, then you'll already have this, in which case you'll be done with all of HoPiKo's trophies.

13 trophies ( 9  )

  • Complete All Runs

To obtain this trophy, you'll need to complete the ten numbered runs in each of the five worlds (so a total of 50 runs).

It's important to note that you do not need to complete any of the Bonus Runs, Speedruns, or Hardcore Runs to obtain this trophy.

You'll also notice that there are 3 'medals' for each run in the game. The first is obtained for simply completing the run, the second is obtained for getting a 'Par' time for the run, and the third is for collecting the 'Console' in the run. You do not need to obtain the second or third medals in all runs for this trophy, you simply need to obtain the first medal by just completing the run.

  • Complete a Hardcore Run

To obtain this trophy, you need to complete a Hardcore Run. There are a total of five Hardcore Runs in the game (one in each World), however you only need to complete one of them, not all five. You can unlock a Hardcore Run by beating all 10 numbered runs in the respective World.

This is one of the more challenging trophies in the game, as a Hardcore Run requires you to complete all ten runs of a World in a single segment without dying. If you die at any point in the run, you'll have to go all the way back to the start as there are no checkpoints.

I would recommend doing the Hardcore Run in World 1, as this should be the easiest one to do for most players. If you find yourself struggling with any particular section, go back to the run select screen and practice it on its own until you feel confident enough to complete it without dying during the Hardcore Run.

  • Complete a Speedrun

To obtain this trophy, you need to complete a Speedrun. There are a total of five Speedruns in the game (one in each World), however you only need to complete one of them, not all five. You can unlock a Speedrun by beating all 10 numbered runs in the respective World.

Although a Speedrun requires you to play through all 10 numbered runs of a world in a single segment, there doesn't seem to be any time requirement (despite a timer tracking the duration of your run in the corner). There are also checkpoints every five levels, so if you die during the Speedrun, you only get moved back a few levels, not to the start of the whole run.

I would recommend doing the Speedrun in World 1, as this should be the easiest (and quickest) one to do for most players.

  • Complete a Bonus Run

To obtain this trophy, you need to complete a Bonus Run. There are a total of five Bonus Runs in the game (one in each World), however you only need to complete one of them, not all five. You can unlock a Bonus Run by obtaining six or more 'Consoles' in the same World.

In a Bonus Run, while the objective is similar to any other run in HoPiKo (complete five levels without dying), the gameplay mechanics are a little different. While in a standard HoPiKo run you'll be 'flicking' the multiple times to get your character across various platforms, in the Bonus Run you'll find yourself on a type of jet powered vehicle at the start of each level. Once on this vehicle, you'll need to keep the pushed towards the direction you want to travel to keep your character on it. If you let go, your character will fly off the vehicle which most of the time, will result in death.

I would recommend doing the Bonus Run in World 1, as this should be the easiest one to do for most players.

  • Complete World 03

  • Complete World 04

  • Complete World 05

Each World in HoPiKo is composed of the following runs:

    - 10 different numbered runs
    - 1 Bonus Run
    - 1 Speedrun
    - 1 Hardcore Run

To obtain the respective trophy for each World, you'll only need to complete the 10 numbered runs. It's not necessary to do the other runs.

You'll also notice that there are 3 'medals' for each run in the game. The first is obtained for simply completing the run, the second is obtained for getting a 'Par' time for the run, and the third is for collecting the 'Console' in the run. You do not need to obtain the second or third medals in the numbered runs for this trophy, you simply need to obtain the first medal by just completing each run once.

One of the more difficult parts about HoPiKo is figuring out the correct route through each level. Therefore if you want to know how to correctly navigate through each run without figuring it out for yourself, I would recommend watching the following video:

  • Par a Run

When you enter a screen, you'll see a bar in the top right hand corner; this is essentially a countdown timer for the current level. This will rapidly decrease in size until it disappears completely. To 'Par' the level, you need to reach the goal before the bar disappears. To 'Par a Run' and obtain this trophy, you need to do this on all five levels in a run.

  • Collect a Console

In each run in HoPiKo, you'll find a PS1 shaped console in one of the levels. These are often placed in locations which may not be part of the optimal route to get to the end of the level, so you need to go out of your way slightly to obtain one. As soon as you obtain one of these, you'll get this trophy.

I would recommend aiming to get six of these consoles in World 1 in order to unlock the Bonus Run so you can complete the Super Drifter trophy. After you've got these six, I wouldn't bother getting any more of them (unless you want to) as they're not necessary for any other trophies in the game.

  • Die 1000 Times

As the description says, you need to die 1000 times to get the trophy. You might initially think this is a high number, however you will most likely die a lot in this game before you finish the rest of the trophies. Therefore I would strongly recommend not grinding out deaths on purpose while going for this trophy as I imagine most players will have well over 1000 deaths before they're done with the game (I had over 2800 deaths through natural play by the time I'd done the other trophies).

If you still have this left over after you're done with every other trophy, I'd recommend going to the second run in world 1 and just mashing as this'll kill you almost instantly. Repeat as many times as necessary for the trophy.

If you're curious how many total deaths you have, you can select 'Statistics' from the Main Menu which keeps track of this for you.

  • Die in Under 1 Second

You'll most likely obtain this trophy very soon after starting the game while you're learning the gameplay mechanics. If for any reason you don't, or just want to obtain the trophy as quickly as possible, then simply enter level 1-2 and mash . You'll die in less than 1 second.
