Introduction:

Hitchhiker: A Mystery Game can best be described as a sitting simulator. It has the same story-driven progression of a walking simulator, but done mostly from the passenger seat of five different cars, as you travel and talk with the drivers as they take you to wherever you are going. Where you are going and where you will end up is the mystery. The beauty of the game is that nearly none of the conversation choices you make will have any effect on the story and only a few puzzles will require a bit of thought during your journey, so sit back and enjoy the weird and wild ride as a Hitchhiker.

Walkthrough:

Step One
: Play through the game

As mentioned above, there are no missable trophies and only a few puzzles and conversation choices to keep in mind, so enjoy the ride and you should complete the game in about three hours. I have laid out most of the puzzles and riddles just to help move your progress along, but none of it is needed to be figured out quickly or on your first try so take it all at your own pace.

By the end of this step, you should have received the following trophies:

  • Life is like a box of raisins.

    Story-Related and Cannot be Missed

You will start the game riding along with a Raisin Farmer named Vern. He will share some stories about his wife and other experiences. During this ride you can examine the items on the dashboard, the visor above your head, in your backpack and against the passenger side door.

The farmer will ask you what eye color he has, and you don't need to get the answer correct but they are Gray.

Eventually, you will be able to open the glovebox, which will continue the story further, as well as adds a chance to just ride in silence for some time.  When you are ready to resume, Vern will tell some jokes and turn on the radio, which will be a program of riddles.  You will need to figure out the riddles and find the answers out your window or in the car.  Again, no stress if you don't figure them out, but the answers are below:
    • Q: I fly, but I have no wings. I cry, yet I have no eyes. Darkness follows me, lower light I never see  A: Cloud
    • Q: A gatekeeper forever bound, he opens and shuts with a similar sound  A: Zipper (look at your backpack)
    • Q: Take one out and scratch my head, I am now black but once was red  A: Match (Examine the backpack, in will be the matchbook you picked up earlier)
    • Q: I have four wings but cannot fly, I never laugh and never cry. On the same spot I'm always found, toiling away with little sound.  A: Windmill (You have to look in the binoculars in the glove box to see it)
    • Final Q: (answer may be obvious): He lies without touching the ground (Vern may interrupt at this point) A: Vern

This will spark another conversation and in the end you should choose the answer: "We've met before"

After a tale about a traveler and a gatekeeper, you will be back in the car and will be swarmed by blackbirds. Roll down the window and keep feeding the birds raisins until you reach the windmill. Then you need to look into the binoculars and rotate the scarecrows so they all lean into the windmill to finish Ride 1
  • We're all looking for something on this road.

    Story-Related and Cannot be Missed

The second ride takes you around a suburban neighborhood, as your driver, a teacher named Hops, looks for a specific street. Hops, will ask you to help him find Asper Street, but the name of the street has been changed. What you need to do is find the street sign labeled "Reaps St." (for me it was on the left of the next intersection when we started looking for it)

After the Scenic Break, a green light will appear on the dash and Hops will ask you to find Lola. Move the paper away from the middle console and open the book below it to find the key to the glovebox. Open the glovebox to find Lola the stuffed bear toy with a windup box bottom. Hops will tell a story about falling through an escalator and then give you his pipe, place the pipe next to Lola on the glovebox door, then wind her up again and eject the cassette tape from the tape deck and place it with Lola and the pipe.

This will spark another long conversation, a story about convicts in a Gulag and some other information. Eventually, Hops will hand you a kaleidoscope. When you can, place it next to Lola to move the story along. (See Build a magic object trophy_gold.png)

Once you have the new object, use it by following the fireflies. Once you have used it on a street sign, a billboard and a telephone pole and then lastly a dog collar. Once you have used the object, Hops will have you find the mailbox you need to find. The fireflies will show the way. Hops will drop you off and you will check the mailbox to exchange the object for something else.
  • Hitchhiking isn't an easy trade. Waiting tables isn't either.

    Story-Related and Cannot be Missed

Most of Ride 3 is actually sitting in a Diner with Leah, a waitress on her day off. Early in the conversation, Leah will hand you a business card. This will be useful later. There are a lot fewer puzzles and questions to answer in this section, so just enjoy the moment.

Leah will chat with you for quite a bit about robots and your girlfriend. Eventually she will start roleplaying as your girlfriend, this will bring you to a choice (See Make a key decision trophy_gold.png) whichever you choose the story will progress the same, but the questions you ask after you make the choice may provide more clues if you want them. Focus as much of your questions about the Man from Balkan Tours if you want the most info.

After you wake up from the Diner dream, Leah will offer to help find the Man from Balkan Tours and will finally give you a ride towards your destination. It will be a short scene in the car and then you will run into some...trouble.
  • I’m one of the ones who didn’t make it.

    Story-Related and Cannot be Missed

You will start trapped in the trunk of a car. You will get a call from Vern, who will help you find your way out, but you will first need to complete a wiring puzzle.  The wiring should end like the below picture with the green wire connected to the positive connection on the right:

Once you are back in a car as a passenger, you will be riding with Asaf. When he starts to sing, tune the radio to frequency 92 and volume 8.

Later, he will ask you to help with the weather conditions outside the car. Tune the radio frequency to around 90 and the volume to 9. Then again to frequency around 98 and volume at about 4.5. Lastly, move the volume down to 3 to clear the sky.

Most of the rest of this ride is filled with stories. Asaf will eventually teach you a Greek phrase (See Master a new weapon trophy_gold.png) and help you figure out what to do with the business card and Leah's phone that are both still in your backpack. You will then make arrangements for your last ride.

  • That's what I've learned here: Fear is the mind-killer.

    Story-Related and Cannot be Missed

The final ride doesn't require much puzzle solving or dialogue on your part, so enjoy the night drive for once and you will eventually find a way to stop the ride.
  • Aw, things like that happen all the time on this highway.

    Story-Related and Cannot be Missed

Vern, the raisin farmer, will tell you about running a vineyard with his wife and will eventually gesture to the glovebox, mentioning a photo of them taken from a magazine. He is superstitious about opening the glovebox, so ask if you can open it to see the photo inside. It will now be available to open and explore.
  • The present moment peels back like wallpaper.

    Story-Related and Cannot be Missed

Once you give Lola, the windup toy bear, the pipe, the cassette tape and the kaleidoscope, she will disappear. Take the box she was in and add the key so it sits inside the open compartment. You will need to rotate the box to get the other items to attach properly.  Add the cassette tape to the back of the box. Add the pipe into the small hole (opposite the open compartment) and add the kaleidoscope into the large hole. Lastly, take the key out of the inside of the box and insert it into the keyhole.
  • Waitresses have to be whatever people want them to be.

    Story-Related and Cannot be Missed

This sounds like it may matter on which you choose, but you will receive the trophy either way and the resulting conversation will be the same. When you are in the Diner with Leah during Ride 3, she will begin pretending to talk to you on the phone and start roleplaying as Keira, your girlfriend. During this moment, Keira/Leah will say "Let me be her."

Pick either "Yes, you can replace her" or "No, this isn't right." Either way, you will have made the key decision and Keira/Leah will allow you to ask a few questions alluding to the Man from Balkan Tours.
  • Make no mistake, these guys are dangerous.

    Story-Related and Cannot be Missed

While all the other big clues or objects you have made so far take some puzzle solving or dialogue to work out, this trophy is awarded without any work on your part. Asaf, the Driver of Ride 4, will tell you a story about his niece and at the end of this story, he will teach you a phrase in Greek. This phrase is meant to be used as a weapon later on, hence the trophy title and why you are awarded this trophy upon hearing it.
  • Inside you’ll find out who you really are.

    Story-Related and Cannot be Missed

Once your final ride comes to a stop, you will have a chance to look at the box you picked up at the end of Ride 2 with Hops. You will find a key in Jack's pocket, which will open the box. Inside is a puzzle with spinning pieces that play audio you have heard throughout the game. you need to match the audio with the pictures which will unlock the bolts holding the box in its locked position. Once you match the correct symbols with the audio, the final sets of symbols should look like the below picture:

If you would like a text description so you can match the audio up with the pictures, the audio and matching symbol is as follows:

"Visiting hours are until seven, so yes, you will get a chance to see her" / Hospital symbol (Plus shape)
"She thinks you have caused some kind of accident" / Car crash
"That was some argument" / Spoon and knife
"You two came by my house, yes - see, that's my silo in the background" / Silo and barn
"I'm going away for two months. I'll be back before you know it" / Airplane
"Here's a security deposit" / Box with keyhole
"I wasn't going to do it, but this tour guide guy talked me into it" / hanglider
"So I'm sending you something from my trip, like I promised" / Envelope
  • Have a good start

    Story-Related and Cannot be Missed

Right after Vern asks you about his eye color in Ride 1, he will tell you to open or close the window (depending on what you did to the window previously) Either way, once you look over at the window crank and begin moving it, you will notice a matchbook which wasn't there before.
