Harmonix Music VR is basically an interactive music visualizer along the line of Windows Media Player. The game comes with several songs pre-loaded, and you have the ability to “import” your owns songs to play in the game. The game consists of four worlds - The Beach, The Easel, The Trip, and The Dance - all of which are available as soon as you load up the game. The controls are a bit odd in this game as each world controls differently.
- The Beach: You control the visualizations by looking at certain interactive objects in the world (no controller needed). To pull up different visualizations, you’ll need to look directly at the objects they are tied to. There is a cursor dot that you can see on screen as you get near visualization objects, the objects also have an aura or glow around them as you get close. To exit visualizations, you’ll need to look fairly far off in any direction; you’ll see the edge of the visualization as you approach, then simply look outside of it for a couple seconds.
- The Easel: Utilize your controller(s) to paint with the objects loaded on the easel. You’ll be painting what is effectively a blank space with 3D objects. This is the world where the two Move controllers are required. One Move controller will be to ring up the easel and move things around; the other will be used for selecting tools and “painting.” The controllers don’t align to a particular side so you’ll likely need to figure out how best it works for you. To bring up the easel, press :Move: on the easel control (looks like a small claw), and to select a paint tool, point the other Move controller at the tool you want to use then click :T:. Once selected, “paint” with that same controller using :T:.
- The Trip: You don’t have control over the visualizations on this world (no controller needed)
- The Dance: You can use your controller(s) to act as a DJ with record scratches, an air horn button, and a party cannon which shoots random objects. You can also make the characters in the level dance or use them as basketballs. Move controllers not required but since you need them for 100% anyway, this will direct you in those controls. You can use the :T: buttons to select and move characters, pick up the party cannon with :T: and fire with the :Move: button, or hit button/scratch records by placing your virtual Move controllers on them.
As the game is effectively a music visualizer, there is no story and no way to fail or die. Instead, the game is really just a chance to listen to your music and see neat visuals. I find that the less interactive levels (The Beach and The Trip) can be fairly calming. Whereas The Dance and The Easel allow for a certain level of creativity in what you are seeing that you can utilize to try and align with whatever music you happen to be listening to.
Music Import Instructions (more detail can be found Settings-->User Guide-->Music--Listening to music on a USB storage device on you PS4)
You'll need a FAT or exFAT formatted thumb drive connected to your PS4 after you have music on it. The music will need to be formatted in as MP3 or AAC for it to work. As you cannot actually transfer music to your PS4 via thumb drive, the drive will need to remain connected during playback. When you start up the game it will take 5-10 seconds for the drive to read after the world select screen appears. After the drive has been read you may get a notice that certain files could not be read if they were not in the proper format, all other songs will be available in the playlist creation screen and you can select them for playback using or .
You can play the game sitting or standing but I suggest sitting as I found as when I stood I tended to get off kilter.
Walkthrough
These steps can go in any order, but this is the order the worlds are setup in during world select.
Step 1: Play The Beach
Load up The Beach and create a playlist with whatever song(s) you want. If you are going for everything in one go you’ll probably want to have at least two songs queued up. Depending on what songs you have in the playlist you may get some of the cleanup trophies as well.
Trophies you’ll get during this step:
Dude...
Just Chill
Beach Comber
WigglyJiggly
Step 2: Play The Easel
Load up The Easel and create a playlist with whatever song(s) you want. If you are going for everything in one go you’ll probably want to have at least three songs queued up. You can technically get everything in two songs, but Stamp Master and Artiste take some time and you’ll need to delete most if not all of what you place due to limitations on what the world can hold at once.
Trophies you’ll get during this step:
Artiste
Perfectionist
Stamp Master
Step 3: Play The Dance
Load up The Dance and create a playlist with whatever song(s) you want. If you are going for everything in one go you’ll probably want to have at least two songs queued up. It is possible to get everything in one song, but you’ll be cutting it close.
Trophies you’ll get during this step:
So long!
Scratch to the Future
Trigger Happy
Party Starter
Net Positive
Step 4: Play The Trip
Load up The Trip and create a playlist with whatever song(s) you want. If you are going for everything in one go you’ll need to have at least ten songs queued up due to Space Cadet. If you aren’t going for Space Cadet yet then you’ll need a minimum of two songs queued up as you cannot get Check Your 6 and Zoned Out in the same song.
Trophies you’ll get during this step:
Check Your 6
Space Cadet
Zoned Out
Step 5: Cleanup
For cleanup, you can pick whichever world you like the most. If you’ve been following the Roadmap you’ll already have Explorer and Dedicated. You may have picked up Rule of Thumb Drive and Double It already as well, but they are dependent on which songs you put in your playlist.
Trophies you’ll get during this step:
Rule of Thumb Drive
Double It
Dedicated
Explorer
I noticed that most of the trophies wouldn’t pop until the end of the song, or sometimes even the end of the playlist. I suspect this was intentional so as not to disturb the music.
[PST would like to thank bigdrama for this Roadmap]
