Introduction:

Hardware Rivals is an online-only Vehicle Warfare game for the PlayStation 4. It is the successor to the PlayStation 2 game Hardware: Online Arena. The game is developed by SCE Connected Content Group and published by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. The game was included in 2016's first PS Plus Game collection of the year on its launch date, 5th Jan 2016. In the game, players can choose between Tanks and Fast Attack Vehicles (FAVs), pitched against one another in a variety of game modes with the ability to pick-up special & secondary weapons in each game mode.

The platinum is generally straightforward, although a number of glitches have occurred to people on their way to platinum. The main grind to 1000 kills will be the most time-consuming element of the game. If you play the game and let the bulk of the trophies come naturally, you'll cover off most of the trophies. There will likely be a handful that you will need to focus on specifically, and these are outlined in the guide below.

Glitches

Although 'The Challenger' has a definite glitch and solution (see trophy guide below), many other trophies are temperamental and for some reason do not pop the first time. In most cases a second attempt will make the trophy unlock. This includes weapon-specific trophies, air kills, special weapon kills. As an online game, regular patches will change the glitching trophies. As of Patch 1.13 the game is not unlocking the At Any Cost & Eternal Victorious Trophies when their requirements are met. The game's developers are investigating the issue

Patch 1.13

As of Patch 1.13 the ability to earn trophies in private matches & the Duel game mode has been removed, making boosting far more difficult. Boosting is still viable via public matches, but will be more troublesome due to other players' involvement in the matches. See individual trophy descriptions for tips on gaining these trophies.

Walkthrough: - The servers have now closed.

Step 1: Complete Basic Training

First things first, get yourself into the main menu and into Basic Training. You'll learn vehicle handling technique, along with weapon instructions. This will give you a good feeling of the game mechanics.

This will earn you:

First time For Everything

Step 2: Enter Quick Match and get used to the game

Dive into your first match and start to get used to the handling & the maps. There are only four maps so this will come fairly quickly. You will find that trophies start to be earned pretty quickly in this game, with trophies awarded for your first kill, playing each map, winning a round & leveling-up.

This will earn you at least:

Oil Spill
Recon
Grats!

Step 3: Kills, Kills, Kills (+ Challenges)

Now that you are used to the game, focus on kills. You'll need 1000 by the end of the game, and Deathmatch/Team Deathmatch should net you 10+ kills per round once you're comfortable with the game. That means you're looking at 100-or-so matches to reach 1000 kills.

This will earn you:

At Any Cost
Team Player
Combat Ready
Engine Grinder
Relentless
Tour of Duty
Rising Up
Officer Material
The Right Stuff
The Fury
Battle Scarred
The Suffering
Eternal Victorious

Also switch between the 4 original vehicles to earn the following trophies while going for the kills:

Full Grid
Tank Commander
Low Rider

Challenges are proving to be intermittent and even glitched for a number of people. The Challenger trophy requires you to beat 3 friends' challenges during matches. See the trophy description for more information, but I recommend you attempt these as soon as they start to appear.

This will earn you:

The Challenger
A Contender

Step 4: Clean-up

There will likely only be handful of trophies that do not come naturally, focus on these or use the Trophy Boosting Thread to get assistance with any you've not achieved naturally.

This will earn you:

So Everybody Sees You
Skill at Arms
Tactical Support
All Systems Functional
Merciless
Ruthless
With Great Vengeance
Special Forces
On the Edge
Unscathed
Splash Damage
Spoiler
Long Distance Rail
Death From Above
Essential Upgrades
Wheels Up
MVP
In Full Flight
Mentioned in Dispatches
Hardwearing

42 trophies ( 29  )

  • Get all the trophies.

The servers have now closed, thus the Platinum is unobtainable but game is online only so no trophies are obtainable.

Collect all Trophies for Hardware Rivals.
  • Complete basic training.

On the Main Menu, choose & complete Basic Training. This will guide you through the games' controls and mechanics, and award you with this trophy.
  • Destroy your first enemy.

Earned upon completing your first private or public match kill.
  • Customize your vehicle.

Either on the main menu or in game lobbies, you can choose options to customize your vehicle. Enter the submenu and change the default skin of your chosen vehicle and you'll get an easy trophy.
  • Destroy 10 vehicles with each secondary weapon.

This is one that you may not do naturally, although you'll probably won't be too far off. All vehicles have the ability to collect pick-up tokens allowing the use of a Secondary Weapon with limited ammo. Keep a list of the various weapons and how many you've killed with each as the game only shows stats for each weapon intermittently during match/lobby loading. The toughest will be Laser and Railgun, as these spawn less often and in more difficult-to-reach places. This can be boosted in public matches if required. Here's a list of the secondary weapons:
    • Laser (Spawns above UFO in Hangar on Blister Lake if you cannot find it elsewhere)
    • Railgun
    • Plasma
    • Rockets
    • Light Missiles
    • Heavy Missiles
    • Bombs
  • Complete a match on every map.

The game only has four original maps to play through, play each one in any game mode and you'll earn the trophy. The 4 maps are:
    • Blister Lake
    • Quarry
    • Lost Temple
    • Outpost 92
  • Activate all the Special Weapons.

A special weapon spawns up to 3 times per match and only in specific locations. Learn the locations as these can also get you a few kills each time one is deployed. The weapons spawn in one of 3 locations per map each time and are purple and circular. Some of the easier locations are in the bunker on Blister Lake or on top of the temple on Lost Temple.

Full list (credit to DJ1s & Luckymouse for assistance):

Lost Temple: Fire of the Ancients
    • Center of the temple ... do the temple jump.
    • In a little structure that you access from behind. Straight down the temple ramp in the direction of the 3 plasmas.
    • Across the map from the last one ... the area of the 3 rockets. You have to go through the archway, up the stairs and make a small jump.
    Outpost 92: Frostbite
    • On the ledge of an elevated area, in one of the corners.
    • On another ledge ... a mountain that you get onto from behind ... on the edge, not the corner.
    • Hovering about the pit in the middle of the map, you have to jump over it, under the Heavy Missile Spawn.
    Quarry: System Purge
    • In the center of the level on the conveyor belt.
    • Behind a dump truck on the outer ledge, upper level.
    • On the roof of one of buildings.
    Blister Lake: Airstrike
    • In the bunker.
    • On top of the UFO hangar, facing the runway.
    • By the Long Reach ramp, on top of a hangar.
Here's a great video from Luckymouse showing all of the Special Weapon spawns for each map:
  • Win any match.

    *Glitched*

Win a match in any mode in the game. Straightforward and can be achieved in team matches if you're struggling to win a Deathmatch game.

    Some tips:
    • Play Team matches - Wins count irrespective of game type, so team-based games count as well if you're struggling to win individual modes such as deathmatch. Just be on the winning team at the end of a match.
    • Learn the Secondary Weapon types - Try out each weapon and remember which you find most effective. I found the Heavy Rockets most useful & best used from a high vantage point.
    • Use the Special Weapons - Learn their spawn locations and be ready to go for them as soon as they become available. An easy way to get multiple kills under your belt & increase win chances.
    • Pick the best vehicle - There is no best vehicle for everyone, but depending on your comfort which each type of vehicle you will find one of the two (FAV or tank) more effective for you. I personally used the tank as it offered a greater chance of survival (stronger armor) & a stronger primary weapon.
  • Win 5 team matches.

This will come fairly quickly as you play through the game. Keep playing Team Deathmatches and this will happen naturally. See At Any Cost for tips.
  • Complete 25 challenges.

Challenges are listed on the Challenges menu in the games' main menu. You will unlock many of these quickly and randomly during games. If you wish to target this trophy specifically then read the description of each challenge in the menu and attempt them during a game. You'll get a pop-up in the top-right corner stating whether you've succeeded.
  • Reach Level 2.

    See Battle Scarred.
  • Hit Level 5.

    See Battle Scarred.
  • Complete a match in every vehicle.

In the vehicle menu, select a different vehicle for four different matches and the trophy will pop. There are only four vehicles required from the original game; 2 Tanks and 2 FAVs. Scarab FAV and Barbarian tank are not required.
  • Get 50 kills.

    See The Suffering.
  • Collect 250 health or armor pick-ups.

Whilst you will probably get this without trying, it can be easily achieved by driving around any of the maps and collecting all of the health and armor icons. Armor is a White Shield and health is a Red Cross icon.
  • Take out 10 enemies while their engines are offline.

    See Ruthless.
  • Take out 10 enemies while their weapons are offline.

For this and Merciless you will be picking up the EMPs for weapons and engines. Only one can be used at a time. Fire it at an opponent and take them out quickly. Since the removal of Duel mode, boosting has become more difficult, although not impossible if you can find a secluded area of a public game with a buddy. These icons look the same as the Secondary weapon pickups, with Weapon EMP being green and Disable being a blue icon.
  • Get 100 kills.

    See The Suffering.
  • Get 10 revenge kills.

A revenge kill is a kill on a rival that has killed you previously. These can also be effectively used to boost your XP as if someone kills you repeatedly you'll also be offered an XP boost in the next match to get your revenge. You will most likely get this without trying but the only way to see how many you have is through the match load screens.
  • Beat friends in 3 Challenges offered during a match.

    *Glitched*

For starters, you're going to need at least one friend with the game who has posted some challenges. Each map has a set number of challenges. These are listed in the challenges menu on the Main Menu. Challenges are posted automatically when you complete a challenge, such as the Temple Jump on Lost Temple or Bunker Run on Blister Lake. You can review your challenges and friends' progress on the Challenges menu by pressing to see friends times, rather than global records. You may find that you complete a number of challenges without trying by going over ramps / jumps and etc.

From time to time, and at present seemingly only once per match you will be offered a challenge to complete. This will be either from a random player or a friend. You will need to complete 3 of the friend challenges successfully (the game will notify you if you've been successful or not). This can be achieved over multiple matches and not just in one game. Mine were achieved in 3 separate games. I would recommend learning the challenge locations using the Challenge menu so that when you receive one, you know what and where to achieve it. These generally are either to achieve a particular jump distance or beat a set course in a specific time.

A number of people are reporting not being offered any challenges. People experiencing this glitch also do not see any friends at all on their Challenges menu (press to see friends' records), even when they have many friends playing the game. This is believed to be caused by having too many friends on your Friends List in the XMB. The exact number required is not yet known, but reducing the number to under 200, maybe even as low as 150 has worked for some. Credit to djhmetfan2.

I recommend having a number of friends playing the game and doing this trophy early, as it will keep the challenge scores achievable. However, unless all of you friends are focusing on setting their best challenge records, there will be many random challenges that are unlikely to be set high, such as collecting weapon pickups or staying stationary in one point for as long as possible. Also note that challenges only appear in Public matches.

This thread shows each of the challenge locations for each map. Credit to staytrue1985.

Here's a great tip from D4RK666Fox on how to 'self-boost' this trophy: "An easy trick is: to create a new account (you get 14 days free PSN), and add yourself as a friend. Then complete some challenges that you didn't complete yet, on different maps. Then switch to your main account to complete them with a better score."
  • Destroy 25 enemies using level specials.

See Tactical Support for Specials description & spawn locations.

If you're constantly going for the specials when they spawn, you'll get this very quickly. It can be boosted in a group, but they are slow to spawn so I'd recommend going for this legitimately. Learn the locations on each map and you'll get up to 10 kills per use. Most likely around 3 or 4.
  • Survive for one minute under 30% health.

You'll probably find that you can get this naturally if you run away from attackers when in peril. If not, you can focus on this trophy by driving around the map at full speed, focusing on speed and direction. Eventually you will be fired upon. Learning the maps and hiding places will be of benefit here. Use the Super Weapon locations in Tactical Support for assistance as these are often away from the action.
  • Retain full health for 2 minutes.

You may get this naturally, but if you do not, you can either hide in a far corner of an empty map. Use the Super Weapon locations in Tactical Support for assistance as these are often away from the action.
  • Destroy 3 or more enemies at once.

One of the trickier trophies, and the kills must be simultaneous, not even within 1-2 secs of each other. Your best bet is to either use the laser on a group of vehicles close together, or most likely use a level special weapon. I got the trophy on Blister Lake with the Airstrike. One boost method is to get a group of four boosters in a Deathmatch game and take it in turns to line-up close together with one person firing the laser at the group. One straightforward spot is to get the laser from on top of the UFO in the hangar on Blister Lake.

This trophy is proving troublesome for some but it has popped eventually. The likely cause is that the kills have to be milliseconds apart, so even using a Special weapon can be erratic as some potential kills will have different damage levels before the Special activates and thus die slightly earlier/later than others. Boosting with a laser has worked for everyone that I have tried it with.
  • Destroy anyone on a kill streak.

If you're playing to reach Level 25 then this will come naturally. Aim for Special Weapons where possible and you will get this without having to try too hard.
  • Take out an enemy with a railgun from 300m or more.

Whilst you can attempt this on any map, it's definitely more easily boosted in a match with a friend. The rail gun can be found in the far corners of most maps, such as Blister Lake where it is in the corner behind the green huts. Blister Lake is an easy place to boost the trophy, from the pickup use the back fence of the map to line-up a shot on a boosting partner, in the far corner of the map near the ramp and hangars.
  • Execute a kill while in the air.

Whilst you may pick this up naturally, you can help yourself by firing a weapon such as a missile at an opponent a distance away, then whilst the missile is in flight, you hit a ramp and the kill should happen with you in mid-air. Hopefully. Again, this is much easier boosted with a friend in a match. If you're not averse to in-game suicide then firing a special weapon then launching into mid-air as the timer reaches zero will net you the trophy as well.
  • Get 250 kills.

    See The Suffering.
  • Select an upgrade for every system.

You'll need to be at least Level 22 to unlock this. Under the Player menu you can use to select unlocks for your player. This will unlock as you level up with the final group unlocked from level 22. Just ensure you select one from each group and you'll get the trophy. If it does not pop immediately upon hitting level 22, go into the player menu and change one choice, it will then pop the trophy.
  • Reach Level 10.

    See Battle Scarred.
  • Reach Level 15.

    See Battle Scarred.
  • Spend over 5 minutes airborne.

Playing the game naturally will get you this trophy not before long. This will include airtime from ramps, jumps or even explosions forcing you into the air.
  • MVP

Get the most points on the winning side of a team game.

This is one of the few skill-based trophies in the game. You'll need to get the most points (not kills) in a Team-based game such as Team Deathmatch (TDM). This will come eventually once you are comfortable with the game. If you focus on the Special weapons, learn the spawn locations and get there first, a couple of these in a round should be enough to ensure finishing top of your team. If not, a few attempts and you should be fine.
  • Destroy an airborne enemy with a railgun.

Although entirely possible legitimately, this is far easier boosted in a match with a buddy. Get a friend into a standard match, such as Deathmatch & find a section away from most of the other players. Pick a small ramp away from the action, such as that at the back in Blister Lake (behind the hangars) and one player line-up to jump off the ramp. The other player collects the railgun (located in the far corner of the map, near the green huts) then lines-up a kill where the other player will land the jump. This may take a few attempts now that the trophies cannot be boosted in private matches.
  • Destroy 150 opponents while driving a Fast Attack Vehicle.

    See Tank Commander.
  • Destroy 150 opponents while driving a tank.

The game contains 2 vehicle types: FAVs and Tanks. For Tank Commander and Low Rider you will need to achieve 150 kills with each vehicle type. Play with either type to begin with, then once Tank Commander or Low Rider pops, change to the other vehicle class in the Vehicle menu. This can be boosted in Duel matches if required.
  • Hit Level 20.

    See Battle Scarred.
  • Get 500 kills.

    See The Suffering.
  • Hit Level 25.

Online public matches net you a bonus of 1000 XP per match, just for playing. So long as you keep playing, you'll get there eventually. Each XP level only requires a few thousand XP to achieve, so it is not a long grind to level 25. Kills offer 100 XP, so if you average 10 kills per round, you'll get 2000 XP + any assists and damage to other vehicles not resulting in a kill. I achieved this before getting to 500 kills. This cannot be achieved in private matches. You'll also stop receiving the 1000 XP bonus from level 24 onwards, but it only takes a few matches with a decent number of kills to get from level 24 to 25 anyway.
  • Get 1000 kills.

This is probably the longest trophy in the game and will require, probably, at least 100 public matches to achieve. Good use of Special Weapons, learning the location of the more powerful Secondary Weapons (Heavy missiles, railgun, laser) will all help here.
  • Get a kill streak of 5.

If you're good at the game, or lucky with deploying a Special weapon, you will get this naturally. This has become more difficult since the removal of the Duel game mode. The simplest way to achieve this trophy is to use the special weapons in a death match game. Otherwise, you could theoretically boost in a public game, but would need to find a good hiding spot for the player farming kills to avoid losing the streak. A good knowledge of the Super Weapon locations (see Tactical Support) would give you good opportunities for finding quieter areas of the map.
  • Win 50 matches.

    *Glitched*

You will need to win 50 matches across any game mode. This includes team-based games such as TDM, so even if you never win a Deathmatch game, just be on the winning team in a TDM match and you'll unlock the trophy eventually. This trophy unlocked for me around the same time as the 500 kills trophy The Fury.
