*WARNING* - I have had multiple reports of this game wiping your save, seemingly at random. Back up your save date often. This game is already frustrating, you will only be annoyed if your save gets wiped and you have to graft through the Championship all over again.

Grand Prix Rock ‘N Racing is an isometric view racer, with a bizarre mix of arcade presentation such as the rock soundtrack and cheesy commentator, and semi-realistic handling physics. The good parts of the game include the progression system and varied tracks that seem to be loosely based on their real-world counterparts but that’s pretty much it. Most other things will only lead to frustration - namely, the awful AI who will ram you into submission and sometimes park on the track, and the inconsistent physics that seemingly choose at random whether clipping the kerb is acceptable or grounds to send you flying into the air. It’s a short game but it can be very annoying and punishing early on where you cannot even consider winning races due to your car having zero upgrades whatsoever and the AI apparently having maxed out stats. You can't even change the colour of your car!

Trophy wise it’s a fairly simple affair, with one being the main focus: Win the Championship in the 1st season! . This trophy requires that you win the Championship in the first season of a new save, for this reason it is technically missable. It can be tough because of the aforementioned lack of stats that you have. Other than that, you’ll need to win each of the 10 Championship races at some point, as well as completing Time Trials and meeting target times for each of the 10 tracks. There’s a single miscellaneous trophy for reaching 380km/h, a trophy for maxing your stats and a trophy for playing a 4-player race; given that there is no online multiplayer in this game, this would usually require 4 controllers of some description, however there is a single controller method to help you get this with no problems.

I have mentioned in the overview that there are 12 glitched trophies, 10 of which are beneficial (you can get all the Time Trial trophies for free!) and 2 of which are quite irrelevant (the trophies Finish France GP in the first position! and Finish Italy GP in the first position! are reversed, meaning you’ll pop the Italy trophy when you win in France, and vice versa). Those latter two are barely worth mentioning but technically a glitch nonetheless.

All in all, it is as mentioned a short game, but in all honesty, not a very good one. It’s OK for those like myself who find themselves addicted to multiple restarts and repetition to get that perfect race and get the trophies done but it is by no means a relaxing experience.

Controls:

The controls are never really explained in this game, although to be fair they are very simple. The main ones you need to know are:

- Steering (tank controls)
- Brake
- Throttle
- Turbo
- Respawn car (only works when stationary or flipped, a spinning black circle will be visible around your car)

Step 1: Win the Championship in your first season

The first step is to play your way through the Championship in order to win it in the first season. There is not much else you can do due to all tracks being locked in all modes until you play the previous one in Championship mode. You simply have no hope of winning the first few individual races, barring a massive slice of amazing fortune, due to your low stats and the significantly faster AI, as well as starting from 20th place.

Your finishing position is absolutely crucial in the first couple of races. Your main goal is to finish as high as you can in the first race, the USA GP (I would advise aiming for 10th or better), to get more upgrade tokens to improve your car quicker and also to have a better grid starting position in the next race. Rinse and repeat this basic principle over the course of the Championship to win it. Importantly, there is no actual ‘restart race’ option mid-race - you’ll probably need to restart races several times due to crashes, spinouts and not being happy with the final position you’re about to achieve, and to do this you’ll need to quit out and start the race again. Try and win the last 2-3 races at least if possible, purely to save yourself time in step 2 playing all the way through to get to the races you didn’t win, although that’s not top priority here.

A more in-depth look at the best tips I can give for winning the Championship in your first season is listed in the guide under Win the Championship in the 1st season! to help keep this roadmap brief.

After this step you will have unlocked (but not limited to):

Win the Championship
Win the Championship in the 1st season!

Step 2: Win the remaining Championship races in your second season whilst fully upgrading your car

Important - do not start a new season. It will overwrite your current save and you will lose all progress you have made in upgrading your car if you start over.

You will certainly need to perform this step due to needing 45 tokens to fully upgrade your car. There are only 40 tokens available over the 10 Championship races (maximum of 4 per race) so you’ll definitely need to continue into the second season. Not only that, there is absolutely no way you’ll have finished first in every race because of how poor your car is in the early part of the first Championship so you’ll need to win the remaining ones.

The opening USA GP is the best place for the speed trophy Speedy!!! while you are there.

After this step you will be finished with Championship mode and will have unlocked:

Finish USA GP in the first position!
Finish Canada GP in the first position!
Finish France GP in the first position!
Finish Italy GP in the first position!
Finish UK GP in the first position!
Finish Germany GP in the first position!
Finish Spain GP in the first position!
Finish Brasil GP in the first position!
Finish China GP in the first position!
Finish Japan GP in the first position!
Speedy!!!
Set Box!

Step 3: Achieve all target times in Time Trial

You can play each of the 10 tracks in Time Trial mode and you will need to beat the target times to unlock the trophy for each one. This becomes fairly simple due to your now thorough knowledge of the tracks, but if you do struggle, they are all beneficially glitched; you can get each trophy for free. More in-depth information and tips can be found under Complete the USA GP Time Trial in less than 01:22:00 .

Once this step is complete you will have unlocked:

Complete the USA GP Time Trial in less than 01:22:00
Complete the Canada GP Time Trial in less than 02:11:00
Complete the Italy GP Time Trial in less than 02:14:00
Complete the France GP Time Trial in less than 02:09:00
Complete the UK GP Time Trial in less than 02:48:00
Complete the Germany GP Time Trial in less than 02:38:00

Complete the Brasil GP Time Trial in less than 02:53:00
Complete the China GP Time Trial in less than 03:26:00
Complete the Japan GP Time Trial in less than 03:02:00

Step 4: ‘Play’ a race with 4 friends

By this stage there is a single trophy remaining for playing a 4 player race. There is no online mode in this game so you are expected to have 4 controllers for this trophy, however there is a simple workaround if you don’t have enough controllers to do that. It can be done with one controller. Please see the Multiplayer trophy for a full explanation.

After this step is complete you will have achieved:

Multiplayer
All trophies earned

  • Finish USA GP in the first position!

This trophy will unlock upon winning Championship Race 1: USA GP.
It’s extremely unlikely you’ll achieve this during your first Championship season.

Remember, when going for the win for this trophy, do not cross the finishing line unless you are going to win. You cannot pick and play individual Championship races so you’ll need to wait until the beginning of a new season/start a new one to try again, or restore a backup save if you have one.

  • Complete the USA GP Time Trial in less than 01:22:00

To get this and the other Time Trial trophies, you need to complete the requisite 3 laps and beat the time listed for each specific track. You can’t see the required time from within the game, the only indicator is the trophy name/description, which is basically how I found the glitch which allows you to get all the Time Trial trophies for free.

You have 2 choices here. You can do all the Time Trials legitimately, or you can glitch them all. As this is a trophy website, I’ll outline the glitch first.

Glitch method: Go to Main Menu > Time Trial and select your required track. Proceed to complete your 3 laps as best you can. Now at this point, there is a chance you beat the time required of you, and if you did then congratulations! The trophy will pop on the ‘Times’ summary at the end of the session and you can move on to the next track. If you didn’t make the grade and want to glitch the trophy, do the following:

    • You have completed the session and are on the ‘Times’ summary screen immediately after. Don’t press to advance from this point; instead, press the button to go the to XMB, then go back into the application again.
    • At this point, you should see a pause menu that has appeared behind the lap times. Select ‘Restart’ and then ‘Yes’.
    • The game will now quit to the Time Trial screen and your trophy will pop. Simple!

Legitimate method: If you want to do it properly, it’s still fairly simple now you have all the experience of trying to beat the AI on Championship mode, if you’ve followed the roadmap. It can be a sweet release too, as there aren’t any AI cars making ridiculous aggressive manoeuvres to smash you off the track!

First you will want to tweak your setup, so to do this go to Main Menu > Time Trial and select your required track. Press (BOX) and you will see that the game has given you 25 tokens to distribute, all of which have been spread evenly over the 5 stats. Below is a screenshot of the stats I used to successfully beat the tracks, this is purely for a rough guide as to what worked well for me. You might want to tweak the stats around this:

It’s always a good idea to increase acceleration and speed and I felt the best way was to sacrifice the turbo and brakes. I also found that increasing the tires past 5 in Time Trial made my car prone to skidding off the track.

Once your car is setup, you’ll have to play through all the tracks to beat their times. For the most part, maintaining a good speed whilst not losing time touching walls and spinning out is usually good enough. Use your knowledge of the tracks, where the corners are, how tight they are and when to brake in order to pull off 3 good laps in a row to beat the target time.

With a few runs of each track, none should cause you any trouble at all.

  • Reach more than 380km/h

You are better off aiming for this during the first race of Championship season 2, USA GP. By that point you will have enough tokens to at least max out the stats needed for this particular trophy, namely acceleration, speed and turbo. If those aren’t maxed out yet and you want to get the trophy out of the way, remember you can redistribute tokens freely, so take them off brakes to move elsewhere if you need to.

Once your stats are set up, start up the race, build up your turbo by using the brakes and boost down one of the straights on the USA GP track to tick the speedometer a touch over 380km/h. The trophy will pop immediately, feel free to quit the race and rearrange your stats in order to go for the win if you still need to do that.

Of course, this trophy can be done on any track that has a nice long straight once you have enough upgrades.

  • Complete the Set Box!

This trophy sounds confusing in name and description until you release that the collective name for your car stats is ‘BOX’. There are 5 stats (Speed, Acceleration, Brakes, Turbo and Tires) and they can be maxed out to 10 tokens each. They start with 1 token each, so for this trophy, you need to accumulate 45 tokens and use them to upgrade your car fully.

You get tokens as rewards for finishing races in better positions. The distribution is (I believe) as follows:

    • 1st to 5th place - 4 tokens
    • 6th to 10th place - 3 tokens
    • 11th to 15th place - 2 tokens
    • 16th to 20th place - 1 token

You can add them to your car prior to a race by pressing (BOX) on the track overview screen.

As there are 10 races in a Championship season and the most you can get per race is 4 tokens, you can only get 40 tokens at most in a single season. This means you will definitely need to carry on into season 2 to get the last few tokens, but this is no big deal as you’ll inevitably be doing that anyway in order to win the individual races.

Important - do not start a new season after your first. It will overwrite your current save and you will lose all progress you have made in upgrading your car if you start over. You must press ‘continue’ to carry on into season 2 to keep your stats building.

You can take the stats back off once you have maxed them and the trophy has popped.

  • Win the Championship

A Championship consists of 10 individual races where you will earn points in order to determine a winner over the season.

See Win the Championship in the 1st season! for the full lowdown on how to win a Championship - once you unlock that trophy, this one pops at the same time.

  • Win the Championship in the 1st season!

This is the main trophy and it’s technically missable in the sense that you would need to start a brand new save in order to achieve it. If you do end up needing to start over, you can do this by selecting Main Menu > 1 player > Championship > New, you don’t need to delete system saves or anything. This will overwrite anything in the ‘Continue’ section, however.

As mentioned in the road map, your finishing position is absolutely crucial in the first couple of races. Your initial goal is to finish as high as you can in the first race, the USA GP (I would advise aiming for 10th or better), to get more upgrade tokens to improve your car quicker and also to have a better grid starting position in the next race. In the second race. Canada GP, 5th place or better will set you up well for the remainder of the season. Rinse and repeat this basic principle over the course of the Championship to win it.

The points system works like most other traditional points scoring season systems; the higher you finish, the more points you get on the leaderboard. 1st place will get you 20 points, 2nd will get you 19 points and so on, until 19th place getting you 2 points and 20th place getting you 1 point. This is always the minimum you will get. If you finish first, the AI may time out and get 0 points depending whether they had time to complete the required amount of laps.

Importantly, there is no actual ‘restart race’ option mid-race - you’ll probably need to restart races several times due to crashes, spinouts and not being happy with the final position you’re about to achieve, and to do this you’ll need to quit out to the Main Menu and start the race again.

You cannot redo races once you have crossed the finishing line so it would be wise to backup your save after every race. Not only is this good general practice, you might finish a race in a low position and find a rival has too great a lead for your liking, or perhaps you forgot the fact entirely and finished 20th while learning the track. Make that backup just in case.

You can redistribute your car stats at any time from the pre-race screen if you feel that your tokens have been spent in the wrong area. To try and help provide a bit of a template to roughly guide you, I have listed my progression through the first Championship season, and token distribution here:

Race | Finish Pos. | Overall Champ. Pos. | Tokens Gained | Where tokens were spent | Stats after spending tokens | Notes

    #1 USA | 10th | 10 | 3 | 2A + 1TI | 1S 3A 1B 1TU 2TI
    #2 CANADA | 5th | 6 | 4 | 1S + 2A + 1TI | 2S 5A 1B 1TU 3TI
    #3 ITALY | 3rd | 5 | 4 | 1S + 1AC + 2TI | 3S 6A 1B 1TU 5TI
    #4 FRANCE | 1st | 2 | 4 | 1S + 2A+ 1B | 4S 8A 2B 1TU 5TI
    #5 GB | 2nd | 1 | 4 | 1S + 2A + 1TI | 5S 10A 2B 1TU 6TI | I was 19 points clear of 2nd here, as a guide
    #6 GERMANY | 1st | 1 | 4 | 2B + 2TI | 5S 10A 4B 1TU 8TI
    #7 SPAIN | 2nd | 1 | 4 | 4B | 5S 10A 8B 1TU 8TI
    #8 BRASIL | 3rd | 1 | 4 | 1S + 2B + 1TU | 6S 10A 10B 2TU 8TI | I saw overall Championship 2nd fly off track here so accepted 3rd place, 24 points clear by now
    #9 CHINA | 1st | 1 | 4 | 4T | 6S 10A 10B 6TU 8TI | I was mathematically champion here, but no trophy yet
    #10 JAPAN | 1st | 1 | 4 | 2S + 2TU | 8S 10A 10B 8TU 8TI

Further to the above, there are also some general tips to follow during the actual races in order to actually win them:

    • Focus on upgrading acceleration first, then tires, speed and brakes, trying to spread the tokens fairly evenly. Acceleration is key in this game, you can’t get a decent start without it. I found upgrading speed and tires past about 8 meant my car was too unpredictable and would fly off most corners. Remember, you can redistribute them at any time if you feel you’ve gone too far/not paid enough attention to a particular stat.
    • Do not under any circumstances touch the wall, you will end up perpendicular to it and it will cost you a lot of time. Try and keep off the grass too, and don’t use the throttle whilst on there. It’s better to take corners extremely cautiously. If necessary, to respawn while the black circle is spinning around you, use this quickly at the first sign you’re stopped.
    • Remember you can’t replay races after the fact, or restart them mid-race, so use the quit to main menu option to your advantage ( > Main Menu > Yes). From here you can tweak your setup, or enter training to practice.
    • You can get the best possible quickstart by pressing right when the announcer says “GO!”, this one is not immediately obvious and can help you get a decent start.
    • Turbo is built up by using the brakes, again this isn’t immediately obvious at first and worth noting here.
    • Don’t take my path to the Championship as set in stone, you may have better luck and use different upgrades if the car doesn’t feel right to you.
    • Use the Training facility if you want to learn the track without the stupid AI and don’t trust yourself not to accidentally finish and ruin progress towards the trophy in an actual race. This is located on the Championship screen > (BOX) > Training.

Also a quick note on car setup once you are in the second season and aiming to win individual races; I actually found it detrimental to fully upgrade the car in every stat, namely, speed and tires made the car very slippery and unpredictable. I won all my remaining races with the following setup:

That’s about it really, persistence will pay off and with a few plays you’ll pick up the track in no time and battle it out for the win. Also at times you will get lucky breaks where there is a massive pileup behind you, try not to panic when you get this sort of chance to coast to victory!

  • Play one race with four Friends

There is no online multiplayer facility in this game so this trophy requires you to use 4 controllers to achieve. Go to Main Menu > Multiplayer, simply connect your 4 controllers, and press to join. Once all 4 players are readied up with , this trophy will pop before you get chance to even start to select the track.

If you don’t have 4 controllers, fear not, you can achieve the trophy with one controller. Below is an extremely simple step-by-step method as to how this is done.

    • Main Menu > Multiplayer > to join > to ready up
    • Switch user, however you have it set up > Enter the application > to join > to ready up
    • Switch user, however you have it set up > Enter the application > to join > to ready up
    • Switch user, however you have it set up > Enter the application > to join > to ready up

Whichever way you do it, the trophy pops only for the user who originally opened the game, and again it will pop as soon as 4th player readies up.
