    Kill a Volatile

How to unlock Mouths Wide Open

A Volatile is a very fast and strong zombie that only appears at night. Killing them early on in the game is tough as you simply won't have the weapons to do enough damage to them, they can also kill you in one or two hits depending on your health upgrades. You can however, use the electric fence traps to kill them. Simply lure one into one and it should take most of its health, then you can either finish it off with melee or wait until you can use the fence again. The tower in the slums has some electric fences by the doorways and enemies cannot enter these areas. You can simply lure a Volatile into that fence and then run into the tower so it cannot hurt you, followed by going out of the safe zone to lure the same volatile into a fence. Later on in the game you will have very powerful weapons, which can one hit kill Volatiles.

This can also be earned if Volatiles kill themselves on accident by falling off of rooftops. This is more common in Old Town, as the buildings are much higher. This is completely random and shouldn't be happening anyway but it can happen when the Volatiles fall off the edges off buildings. Usually, when they are chasing you and other zombies bump them off the edge.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mM7Yj4k56yA Volatiles only come out at night. They spawn very frequently around the tower (the safe zone in the Slums where the game starts and where most main missions begin). Sleep in your bed to make it nighttime. Now a very easy way to kill them is to lure them into the electric fence traps around the tower. Activate the trap when a Volatile is chasing you. When the Volatile walks into the trap it should die. If the Volatile doesn't die right away, keep in mind that there is a second trap on the other side of the building. The traps recharge after half a minute and can be used again.
  • That's a difficult way to do it just stand in front of your safezone so u can pull your weapon then throw an grenade/molotov at them 2/3 times and they will die (eeverytime they Come at u step back in safezone so they cant hit u, when they walk away from the door throw)
  • Or just use a rifle or shotgun and go at it. Easier that way
  • Just a quick note to say I have now killed two Volatiles, and no Trophy for me! Not sure if it's a glitch, or of I've discovered a finer detail of requirements. I used a rifle in both cases (can't remember if it was a police or military rifle). The two kills showed up in my stats in the Extras Menu, but definitely no Trophy. Can anybody confirm... Do firearm kills register for the Volatile kills Trophy? Thanks!
  • @#4, I'm getting this too. I've killed multiple Volatiles with the super OP machete and no trophy.
  • I got this without fighting it. I was at the end of the bridge, where you jump for the "A Long Way Down" trophy and I saw a volatile on the other side. I tried getting its attention, but it never saw me, it was walking and then it fell off the bridge and the trophy popped up
  • Close to the water's edge under the bridge coax them toward you with firecrackers and then when they start chasing you jump in the water. They die instantly.

  • ok, it's really not necessary to be a long way through the game. as long as you have enough energy to get to the end of the infamy bridge this is a dead easy trophy. go to the end of the bridge during daytime. at the end on the right hand side is a coach or bus with two doors. go to the front door, enter and turn round to face the outside. as you are there in the daytime you will get zombies coming after you. just give em a kick and off the edge they go. keep doing this until night arrives, you can even throw a few fire crackers to attract them or go jump on top of the blue car on it's side just to annoy them. the beauty of this is that every one that you kick over the side counts toward the "this is harraaaaan" trophy. anyhoo, when night comes you will get a visit from a few volatiles
  • cont: kick them off too. first one over and the trophy is yours. you get good points for them too. i did 4 on my first go then accidentally fell off the bridge and got the long way down trophy also. it took 3 game days to kick enough zombies off to get the other trophy, so from the one place you can capture 3 trophies with little effort
