Introduction:

Welcome to Disgaea 1 Complete. This is the complete version the original Disgaea, originally released on the PS2, but with enhancements that came from the later ports. This game features HD graphics.

This game takes at least two playthroughs to go through, and there are a few missable trophies in this game. Thankfully, there is New Game+ here if you have missed anything. Do keep in mind that there are multiple endings to this game, some which are basically over-glorified Game Overs, that will start a new cycle and you can miss out on the rest of the game and have to start New Game+ if you’ve saved over your file. Thankfully, you keep your levels and items when you start New Game+, so it shouldn't take long to return where you were.

I highly recommend that you install patch 1.01, as this fixes the issue with crashing, and it also ups your Statistician cap from the original 300 to 900, so that leveling can be done much quicker.

To plat this game much quicker, I recommend going to Settings and turning off friendly effects and enemy effects, since some animations can be quite long.

Walkthrough:

Step 1: Play through the story normally, but keep in mind the requirements to unlock Etna Mode

Basically, just enjoy the story and play through it. Avoid getting ally kills (when you kill your own ally with your own attack) as much as possible. Keep in mind that you’ll want to read all of Etna’s diary entries before reaching the final chapter, so that you can unlock Etna Mode for the next playthrough. You’ll want to keep a save at the final chapter of the game and right before the last stage. You can beat the game to earn a trophy, but make sure not to overwrite your save, as unlike in later Disgaea games, beating the game will start a New Game+ instead of going to post-game.

After this step, you’ll unlock the following trophies:

Prince of the Netherworld
Etna's Secret
Angels, Demons, and Humans
100 Kills!
500 Kills!
1,000 Kills!
What Lies Beyond the Battle

Step 2: Cave of Ordeals and Ex bosses

Reload the save just before the final stage, and unlock all of the “post-game” stages in the Dark Assembly. Here, you have to complete all stages of the Cave of Ordeals and defeat all Ex bosses in the game. For the EX bosses, you should leave Astro Carter for last, as defeating him gives you a different ending and forces you to New Game+. Once you’ve done everything here, get an ending (Human Ending recommended as you need to defeat Astro Carter for all of the EX bosses) and start a New Game+. If you have met the requirements for Etna Mode, make sure that when you’re about to save the New Game+ file to select start on Etna Mode. Load up the file from the main menu to start a new playthrough in Etna Mode.

After this step, you’ll unlock the following trophies:

Cave of Ordeal Cleared!
Defeated Priere
Defeated Marjoly
Defeated Super Overlord Baal
EX Complete!
Defeated Item General!
Defeated Item King!
Defeated Item God!
Defeated Item God 2!
100,000 Damage!
Super Rich!
Tons of Bonus!
Noob Grinder
Intermediate Grinder
Grind Professional
Got Dream Hand!
Got Hyperdrive!
Grind Master

Step 3: Etna Mode and Clean-up

Play through Etna Mode and clean up the rest of the trophies. There are two story related trophies here. One is for completing the game, which like in normal mode, starts a New Game+ upon completion, so keep a save file before in case you want to spend time in Etna Mode. Cave of Ordeals 3 in Etna Mode is the best map for leveling up in the game for both modes, which makes it easier to earn the trophy for doing 10 million damage. You’ll also want to transmigrate a unit at least 10 times, preferably the unit that you intend on using for 10 million damage.

After this step, you’ll unlock the following trophies:

Super Dimensional Etna
Chronicles of Etnarnia
10,000,000 Damage!
First Transmigration
Transmigration Master

31 trophies ( 16  3  )

  • Obtain all trophies.

    Congrats dood!

  • Completed Ep.1 "Prince of the Netherworld".

    Missable!

This is story related, but it’s technically missable if you lose the fight to Mid-Boss at the end of the chapter and save over your file, as this will start New Game+. This trophy unlocks upon complete the map Hall of Caresses.

This map is quite difficult this early in the game. You have to get rid of the geopanels on this map, as they give Enemy Boost X 6 and Attack +1 which means that not only the enemies’ stats are boosted by six, but they can also attack twice.

Be careful. If you lose this fight, you will unlock a secret ending, and if you save over this file, you will have to start the whole game over in New Game+, which means that you’ll miss this trophy and all story related trophies after, though since it’s early in the game, and you keep your stats in New Game+, it doesn’t take long to reach this map again.

  • Completed Ep. 5 "Etna's Secret"

    Missable!

This is story related, but it can be missed if you have lost to Mid-Boss and saved over your file, you have more than 50 Ally Kills before the end of chapter 3 and chose “Yes” to kill Hoggmeiser, or if you have over 100 Ally Kills before the end of chapter 5 and choose “Yes” to kill Maderas. This unlocks after completing the map Ice Queen.

There is nothing special in this map, as it’s just about killing the enemies. Maderas is the strongest enemy in this map, but he shouldn’t be too difficult.

  • Completed Ep. 10 "Angels, Demons, and Humans"

    Missable!

This is story related, but it can be missed if you have lost to Mid-Boss and saved over your file, have more than 50 Ally Kills before the end of chapter 3 and chose “Yes” to kill Hoggmeiser, or if you have over 100 Ally Kills before the end of chapter 5 and choose “Yes” to kill Maderas. This unlocks after completing the map Inferno.

This is another map that’s all about killing the enemies. Again, if you lose to Mid-Boss here, you get an ending which will start New Game+ and cause you to miss the rest of the game if you save over your file.

  • Completed Ep. 1 of Etna Mode "Super Dimensional Etna"

This is a story related trophy in Etna Mode.

To unlock Etna Mode, in normal mode, before the final chapter, you have to press two switches. One switch is behind the throne, and the second switch is at the skull where the shops are. Once both switches are activated, head behind the prinny in the screen between the throne and the shops. Etna will say that she needs to go the bathroom. You have to read all diary entries before the final chapter. She gets a new diary entry each chapter. I recommend to read the diary once you begin a new chapter so you don’t forget. If done correctly, when you visit the room in the final chapter, you will get a Testament. This means that Etna Mode will be available in New Game+.

Here are images of the two switches that you need to press:

And once the switches are pressed, here is where you need to go to read Etna's diary:

There is an alternate way to start Etna Mode. In the title screen, highlight Start and press the following buttons in this order:

If done correctly, you will hear Etna’s voice. This will also start a game in Etna Mode, but you will be starting from scratch.

Enemies are stronger in Etna Mode than in normal mode. The story enemies are between level 60 and 310 in New Game+, and you won’t have Laharl at all in this mode. Not all other story related characters join either. If you are starting from a new file, they will be level 1.

This trophy is obtained after completing the map Hall of Caresses.

  • Cleared Extra Stages "Cave of Ordeal"

    Missable!

There are five Cave of Ordeal stages in both normal mode and Etna Mode. You have to complete all 5 stages to unlock this trophy. Demonhall Mirror is not needed to unlock this trophy. To complete Cave of Ordeals 5, you will need either 2 Rogues, or a Rogue and Gordon. They will need to make a tower in order to toss a character across a gap to reach the Zombie King, which is level 1000 in normal mode.

  • Defeated the Extra Boss "Priere"

    Missable!

Priere is a character from the game La Pucelle Tactics on PS2. To unlock her stage, in the Dark Assembly, pass the bill “Alternate Netherworld”. You will likely have to pass this bill by force, as it’s not likely to be approved. You will fight Priere in the stage Warrior Maiden. She is level 2000. You can throw her and her companions to the floating islands, and use ranged attacks like Wind Cutter and spells. They won’t be able to hit you as long as they are on the floating islands.

Priere can also be fought in Etna Mode, and it’s unlocked the same way, but she doesn’t join you in this mode.

This boss is required for the trophy EX Complete!.

  • Defeated the Extra Boss "Marjoly"

    Missable!

Marjoly is a character from the game Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure originally released on PS1, but also got a release on the Nintendo DS. To unlock her stage, in the Dark Assembly, pass the bill “The Mysterious Sea”. You will likely have to pass this bill by force, as it’s not likely to be approved. You will fight Marjoly in the stage Beauty of Evil. She is level 2500. If you have Priere, she can beat her as long as Priere keeps healing herself. Marjoly will run out of SP using Tera spells eventually, which makes the fight considerably easier.

Marjoly can also be fought in Etna Mode, and it’s unlocked the same way, but she doesn’t join you in this mode.

This boss is required for the trophy EX Complete!.

  • Defeated the Extra Boss "Baal"

    Missable!

After recruiting both Priere and Marjoly, you unlock the location Baal Castle. You don’t pass a bill to unlock this, as this unlocks automatically. In the second stage is where you fight Baal. He is level 4000 and very strong. Make sure to steal the Nemesis and the Super Robo Suit as not only that they are amazing items, but they will weaken Baal a little bit. This is the only fight where you can earn the Super Robo Suit (unless you steal one from the Item God 2 of another Super Robo Suit) in the game, so if you miss it, you have to start a new cycle. Baal does about 200k damage to a character.

Baal can be fought in Etna Mode, though it’s a much harder fight. Defeating Baal unlocks a secret ending in this mode, which will prevent you from earning a story related trophy in this mode if you don’t have a previous save and you saved over your file.

This boss is required for the trophy EX Complete!.

  • Defeated all EX bosses!

    Missable!

You have to defeat all EX bosses in the game, and a few are missable. All of these can be fought in normal mode, but a few can be done in Etna Mode. If you defeat an EX boss in normal mode, you don’t have to defeat their counterpart in Etna Mode. I recommend doing all of them in your first normal playthrough anyway and leaving Astro Carter as your last EX boss whenever you’re ready to start a New Game+.

Here is the list of the required bosses:

    Item General
    Item King
    Item God
    Item God 2
    Prinny God
    Astro Carter
    Adell
    Rozalin
    Zetta
    Priere
    Marjoly
    Baal
    Prinny Baal

The Item General, Item King, Item God, Item God 2, Priere, Marjoly, and Baal all have trophies associated with them. See Defeated Item General!, Defeated Item Kingl!, Defeated Item God!, Defeated Item God 2!, Defeated Priere, Defeated Marjoly, and Defeated Super Overlord Baal for more information about these EX bosses.

Prinny God is fought in the last level of Prinny Land, Prinny Land 3. You have to pass a bill in the Dark Assembly to open up the Prinny Land. He is level 100, and there nothing special about this fight.

Astro Carter is fought at the end of the Human World. You have to pass a bill in the Dark Assembly to open up the Human World. I highly recommend you save Astro Carter for last, as defeating him and completing the stage gives you the Human Ending for this game, and forces you into New Game+, which means that you have to start the whole game over to return where you were. He is only level 260, which is lower than most of the other EX bosses.

Adell and Rozalin are fought in Demonhall Mirror. When you first complete all five Cave of Ordeals stages, you unlock Demonhall Mirror. Each time you fight in Demonhall Mirror, the stage will be different, until you fight Adell alone. After Adell is defeated, the next time you fight in Demonhall Mirror, you will fight Adell and Rozalin together. Make sure to get rid of the Enemy Boost X 3 Geopanels here. Rozalin uses a skill named Rose Thorns that can deal over 100K without the Enemy Boost X 3, and over 300K with.

Zetta is fought in the Stellar Graveyard, if you have maxed out the enemy’s strength in the Dark Assembly. The first time you pass the Strongest Enemies bill, when you talk to the Dimension Guide, she will alert you that something appeared in the Stellar Graveyard. Choose the map Primordial Soup, and you will fight Zetta. There are plenty of negative Geopanel effects here like Ally Damage and Enemy Boost X 3. Get rid of these panels. There are some Warp panels that allow you to warp to the other side. Zetta can only move one square at a time. He joins after you defeat him.

Prinny Baal is fought after defeating Baal for the first time, in the very same stage. He is even stronger than the previous Baal and has different items to steal. Be sure to steal them to weaken him.

  • Defeated the Extra Boss "Item General"

The Item General is found on the 10th, 20th, 40th, 50th, 70th, and 80th floor of any item in the Item World. Defeat it to earn this trophy. Defeating an Item General boosts the item’s stats.

This boss is required for the trophy EX Complete!.

  • Defeated the Extra Boss "Item King"

The Item King is found on the 30th, 60th, and 90th floor of any item in the Item World. Defeat it to earn this trophy. Defeating an Item King boosts the item’s stats and increases the item’s Specialist capacity by one.

This boss is required for the trophy EX Complete!.

  • Defeated the Extra Boss "Item God"

The Item God is found on the 100th floor of any item ranked 39 and lower. When you first meet an Item God in an item, it will be carrying the next ranked item, but with a random rarity except for rank 40 items (ex. In a rank 20 sword, the Item God will be carrying the rank 21 sword). If you use a Mr. Gency’s Exit on this floor without stealing the item, the Item God won’t have the item equipped anymore, so you only have one chance to steal the item. This is how you earn most rank 40 items in the game.

This boss is required for the trophy EX Complete!.

  • Defeated the Extra Boss "Item God 2"

The Item God 2 is found on the 100th floor of a rank 40 or 41 item. It is one of the most powerful enemies in the game. It would be carrying a copy of the same item that you’re in, but if you use a Mr. Gency’s Exit on the floor without stealing the item, the Item God won’t have the item equipped anymore, so you only have one chance to steal the item.

This boss is required for the trophy EX Complete!.

  • Dealt 100,000 Damage!

    See 10,000,000 Damage!.

  • Dealt 10,000,000 Damage!

To deal 10,000,000 damage, you need at least 2.5 million ATK. The easiest way to this amount of ATK is to have a Divine Majin (Tier 6 Majin), likely transmigrated various times, and wearing a perfect Yoshitsuna and 3 perfect Super Robo Suits with all four items the same exact rarity. A Yoshitsuna is stolen from the Item God 2 of a legendary Cosmic Blade, and the Super Robo Suit is stolen from the first Baal fight, and is missable. You can keep earning Super Robo Suits by stealing them from the Item God 2 of a Super Robo Suit.

To unlock the Majin class, you need a level 200 Rogue, level 200 Scout, level 200 male Warrior, level 200 Ninja, and a level 200 male Brawler, all at the same time. Scouts and Rogues are unlocked with a level 5 Brawler (any gender) and a level 5 Warrior (any gender). A Ninja requires a level 10 male Brawler and a level 10 male Warrior. The Divine Majin unlocks when you have a level 500 Majin of any tier. I recommend making a Majin when you first unlock it, level it to at least 500, and transmigrate to a Divine Magic at Genius proficiency when you have enough mana (75,000).

To perfect an item, you have to subdue all current innocents before fighting the first item boss, using a Mr. Gency Exit to leave, and fill it up all slots with Gladiators (the actual level of the Gladiators themselves don’t matter). You want to use the technique known as “double killing” item bosses. This is when you first encounter an item boss on each 10th floor, kill it, and use an Mr. Gency Exit to leave. This will give a boost to the item. Now, return to the item and kill the item boss again, and complete the floor and exit when prompted to give yet another boost to the item. Remember that whenever you defeat an Item King, you will get a new innocent slot which should immediately be filled with a Gladiator when you leave.

The best map to level up is Cave of Ordeals 3 in Etna Mode. If you’re not in Etna Mode, then Cave of Ordeals, Demonhall Mirror is the best map to level up. You should have the strongest enemies bill passed for the highest leveled enemies possible. Have a level 900 Statistician (with the latest patch) and a level 1900 Armsmaster in your weapon. You’ll also want to have 5 character who can cast Braveheart (mostly Mages and Skulls). You want to get your weapon mastery and skill level with Nightsever as high as possible, as this will do more damage.

Once you have enough ATK, you’ll want to head to the item world, and use a very low ranked item for the weakest enemies (make sure you have the weakest enemies bill passed). You want to look to see if you have any ATK 100% Geopanels or if you’re able to make an ATK 100% Geopanel. If not, you can use a Scout to change the Geopanels, though it can only be used once per floor. When you see an ATK 100% geopanel, stand on the square, and make sure that you’re behind the enemy, as being behind the enemy adds to the damage. Have your Mages cast Braveheart on your Majin, and then your Majin attacks with Nightsever. If done properly, you should be able to do 10,000,000 damage.

  • Killed 100 enemies!

    See 1,000 Kills!.

  • Killed 500 enemies!

    See 1,000 Kills!.

  • Killed 1,000 enemies!

As the trophy says, kill 1,000 enemies. You will kill way more than this while going for platinum.

  • Obtained 1,000,000 HL

This is not cumulative. You need to have all 1,000,000 HL on you at the same time. This will come naturally while going for plat, as you will earn well over this amount in the post game stages.

  • Obtained 10,000,000 HL at the end of battle

This earn this trophy, you need to earn 10,000,000 HL as bonus at the end of a battle. It would appear as “Super Bonus” when it’s over this amount. This will happen naturally while going for platinum in the more difficult post game stages.

  • Obtained Total LV 100

    See Intermediate Grinder.

  • Obtained Total LV 1,000

For Intermediate Grinder and this trophy, one character has to reach level 100 and level 1,000 respectively. The best level level to grind is Cave of Ordeals 3, at least until you can recruit Adell and Rozalin.

  • Obtained Total LV 5,000

See Grind Master for more information.

  • Performed your first transmigration

    See Transmigration Master.

  • Performed 10 transmigrations

Transmigration is what the later Disgaea games refer to as “Reincarnation”. You have to increase your Demon Rank to at least 3. When you transmigrate, you will reset to level 1, but with increased stats, so when you level back up again, you will have higher stats. For this trophy, all 10 transmigrations have to be done with the same character.

  • Obtained the Dream Hand!

You earn the Dream Hand by talking to the priest that has Data Shop on his head when you have collected at least 10% of all items. You actually get a Dream Hand for each 10% of items collected so you can actually get 10 of these on one file.

  • Obtained the Hyperdrive!

    Missable!

To obtain the Hyperdrive, you have to go through an entire rank 40 item in the Item World from the very first floor, without ever leaving to go back to HQ, and defeat the Item God 2 at the end. The real tricky part is that whenever you complete the 10th floor, you get a prompt asking you if you want to return to HQ. You have to select “no”, but the cursor is on “yes” by default, so you have to be careful not to accidentally leave. You also have to make sure that you have at least some space in your inventory. If you don’t have the space, you have one more chance to get it, by buying it at the store immediately. If you don’t do that, you miss your chance to earn this item.

Equipping this item allows you to teleport anywhere in a stage, except for Dimension Gates in the Item World. You can only earn one Hyperdrive per file.

Secret trophies

  • Completed Final Episode "What Lies Beyond the Battle"

    Missable!

This is earned by completing the final stage in the normal story mode, but due to the numerous endings in this game, this is technically missable. This unlocks after completing Sacred Altar.

There are a lot of enemies in this fight, and the highest level enemy is 90. It’s best to let the enemies come to you so you don’t get overwhelmed here.

I highly recommend saving before this fight, as after this fight is over, you will start New Game+. Do not overwrite your previous save file, otherwise you will have to go through the whole game again in order to fight EX bosses and such.

There are four endings that you can get here, though the trophy unlocks no matter what ending you get.

Good Ending: Zero ally kills in the playthrough. Throwing your own prinnies doesn’t count against this. This is the canon ending and this is the ending where Disgaea D2 continues from.

Normal Ending: At least one ally kill in the playthrough, but you haven’t defeated an Item God or have passed 100 bills by force.

Bad Ending 1: At least one ally kill in the playthrough and passed at least 100 bills by force.

Bad Ending 2: At least one ally kill in the playthrough and defeated an Item God.

  • Completed Final Episode of Etna Mode "Chronicles of Etnarnia"

    Missable!

This is a story related trophy only in Etna Mode, but it’s technically missable if you defeat Baal in this mode, as it unlocks a different ending. This is for completing the map Millennium Ice in Chapter 4, a map exclusive to this mode. The highest level enemy is 310 if playing in New Game+.

  • Obtained Total LV 10,000

For Grind Professional and this trophy, the total levels of all of your characters must add up to 5,000 and 10,000 respectively. This should occur naturally while recruiting Priere and Marjoly, as they join at high levels. The maximum level a unit can be is 9,999.
