Introduction:
Crescent Pale Mist is a side-scrolling action platformer that specializes in puzzle platforming and bullet-hell style boss fights. There are five modes of difficulty and two modes of play. Item collecting is the most complicated part of the game, as many of the items are hidden behind platforming puzzles and items no longer appear on a stage if you die while attempting it.

First things first - when you start the game, be sure to go into the options menu and turn on the map number system. This will tell you what area of each stage you are on at all times, which is vital to understanding my item location guide and the ever-helpful series of maps located here: LINK These were created by AdorableNirvash and tweaked by Cissamannen. Be sure to look at these maps when reading my item locations to better understand where you need to go in any given stage. The area numbers are uniform between the game, this guide and the maps.

I would also highly recommend remapping the special button from to . It aids greatly when you use teleporting daggers, as it’s a lot easier to hold and spam than it is to hold while doing the same. Teleport dagger spam is my solution to a lot of climbing puzzles so I can't stress this suggestion strongly enough.

Keep in mind that pumpkins, onions, slimes, and bats all respawn if you kill them, leave the area, and return. You can abuse this to replenish health lost while fighting most of the boss monsters in this game, so don't be afraid to hit things until you're full before jumping back into the fray.

Walkthrough:

Step 1: Do the Tutorial to learn the basic mechanics, and then play the game on Normal.

  • Pick up whatever items you find along the way. You don’t need to obsess about staying alive for item collecting purposes, because stages unlock for chapter select as you complete them.
  • Explore the stages for stat altering orbs.
  • Learn boss patterns and how to exploit them. Some bosses are more vulnerable to different methods of attack.
  • Be sure to collect the Thief’s Dagger from Stage 3 before continuing to Step 2, because it’ll make item collecting easier.
  • Grab the Music Room trophy by collecting the item in the bottom right corner of 6-000.

Step 2: Play on hard and equip the Thief’s Dagger so that you can get items out of your enemies, most specifically:

  • The Mysterious Button from the red armor enemy in Stage 5 to unlock Boss Mode.
  • The Terror Medallion from the black armor enemies in Stage 4 to allow Fear to unlock once you beat hard.
  • The Philosopher’s Stone from the game’s final boss to activate the power of the gems you collect.

Step 3: Before moving to Fear mode, make sure to spend some time collecting items that you haven't. Diamond and Inhuman Blade in particular make Fear and Planeriel difficulties much easier. Refer to Bone Collector and Artifact Collector for item location details. Run through Boss Mode on easy for the Brave Knight trophy; it shouldn’t take you much more than ten minutes.

Step 4: Beat the game on Fear, and collect the Nightmare Medallion along the way.

Step 5: Beat the game on Planeriel.

Step 6: Clean up - Collect all the items and artifacts you're missing, if any. The clean up step is either the longest or the shortest, depending on how much you explored during step three.

  • Finish Tutorial.

Not much to say, just start up the Tutorial and complete it.

  • Collect all Archive artifacts.

    See Artifact Collector.

  • Collect all items.

Ruby: 2-008 - It's high up in the middle where the ghosts are. Either emergency evade upwards when and use your daggers to hang until you get hit again, or use teleport daggers to gain the necessary height. Emergency Evade is easier, provided you have the health, just remember that if you don't stall your fall with daggers, you won't get hit again and you can't get any higher.

Sapphire: 6-000 - At the start of the level, go to the top of the screen before moving forward. It'll be by a ghost in an alcove.

Emerald: 3-010 – Lure a slime to the barrier on the left of 3-002, knock it past the barrier, and use a teleporting dagger. Follow the path to 3-009. Go down to the middle part of 3-009 past the red Lich enemies and take the red arrow down to 3-010. Fall off the left side to a lower area, where Emerald waits in an orb.

Amethyst: 1-000 - Right above where you start. Equip the Rusted Blade on Terror difficulty or higher and lure one of the big jellies onto the starting platform. Back into the left corner and release a circle of pale mist. When the blob gets close, use up square, activate Rowanveld PM, and move forward to catch the jelly with teleport dagger spam. Jump off it when you can't push it any higher with daggers, and you should easily be high enough. Practice the catch part of this a few times if you don't get it immediately. This tactic is important for other items, and the pacing is roughly the same. With this technique, the monster should always be knocked straight up and a little in front of you.

Aquamarine: 5-001 - At the second onion crossing. To do the onion crossings, release a ring of pale mist, hit diagonally up and forward, and then activate the blades when the pumpkin is almost out of the ring, then use a teleport dagger sent diagonally forward, jump forward off of it, and spam Rowanveld quickly to coast the rest of the way. If you don't get the item on the first go, it's okay - jump down into the pit and use the pink warp field to try again.

Opal: 4-059 -You will have to beat Gilgamesh to remove the protection keeping you from this item. Gilgamesh is a boss enemy, and exceptionally difficult. To get to 4-059, climb up the series of steps in 4-008 about halfway until you're on a platform with two pedestals in the background, and jump up at the rightmost pedestal. Once you go down this route, you will be trapped until you kill Gilgamesh, so fair warning.

Moonstone: Beat Narju on Stage 6 without dying. Available on Normal Mode. You also earn boss kill items in Boss Only Mode, which saves you time in case you die in the boss fight.

Diamond: 4-046 - This item took me hours, but it helped me develop the primary jumping technique I described for Amethyst. To get to 4-046, follow the basic path until you can choose to go up stairs to the left or right. Choose right, follow the lower area to the right, and then move up when the opportunity presents itself. With the pumpkin on the far left side, but a small distance from the wall, release the mist and knock it upwards with your sword, then send it flying with Rowanveld PM, then teleport daggers. Jump off the enemy, then wall jump - if you have to jump in the air twice to get to wall jump height, you will need to start over. Wall jump until you're just before the red energy walls, and then use your spare normal jump to center yourself beneath the orbs you can teleport to. Teleport up to the second, higher orb, trying to stay to the left or rightmost you can while still able to hit them. After arriving at the second orb, you have JUST enough distance to fall into the wall to begin wall jumping again. You'll reach an alcove, but you're not done yet. You have to jump again, catch another teleport orb pair up, wall jump up again, use a pocket jump to center yourself before hitting energy walls again, and wall jump - again. You'll get Diamond and Inhuman Blade for your trouble.

Garnet: 2-019 - Kill the Garnet armors for a chance at this drop. It's not guaranteed, so try going in on Hard so you can have the Thief’s Dagger.

Royal Jelly: 3-051 - There are two hidden paths at 3-050 that require you to jump down. This is on one of them.

Elixir: 5-067 - This is frustrating, but it prepares you for Light Crystal. After the Rose armors, head up twice and take your next available up to 049. There's an immortal onion here that you need to knock up onto the next highest ledge, and THEN you need to use that onion to get onto the next highest ledge. Use circles of mist centered on the onion and teleport dagger spam, then use a single hit of your blade to knock the onion onto the shelf. It sounds easy, until you need to do it twice, and I have no real advice other than keep trying. If you can practice it so that you can knock the onion onto the second level and join it there, so much the better, as you'll need to do that for Light Crystal and Mystery Onion.

Excalibur: 3-052 - There are two hidden paths at 3-050 that require you to jump down. This is on the other one.

Brunhild: 4-065 - To get to the 60 series of areas, return to the onion at 4-046 and knock him up on the left-hand side of his area. There will be two aggressive dark pumpkins that you'll need to use to get further up one step at a time. I suggest not trying anything fancy. Let it hit you when you’re next to the wall to knock you up, then wall jump, jump back, wall jump, and jump up. It's a lot easier than trying to combo him, failing, and accidentally killing the thing and forcing a restart. When you get to 4-065, don't kill the flying knives. Lure then to the topmost area, wall jump off the left side twice and use daggers and emergency evasion to reach the ledge where the item is. (The other orb is Defense+, so don’t worry about reaching it.)

Brutius: Kill Soray in Stage 2 without dying. Available on Normal Mode. You also earn boss kill items in Boss Only Mode, which saves you time in case you die in the boss fight.

Inhuman Blade: 4-046 - See Diamond.

Thief's Dagger: 3-063 - Don't kill the bats. Jump up as high as you can, hang with daggers, and wait for the hit to evade up higher. You'll have to go by 3-063 if you're going to beat this stage, so don't miss this item. Thief's Dagger is essential to Artifact farming in this game, as it increases the chance of monsters dropping items.

Astral Dagger: Kill Kurow in Stage 4 without dying. Available on Normal Mode, I think, I definitely got it on Hard. You also earn boss kill items in Boss Only Mode, which saves you time in case you die in the boss fight.

Demon Lord of Destruction: 5-002 - Requires a lot of jumping. Follow the onions right twice, then use the third onion to go up. Use the fourth onion to go up, use the fifth onion to go right. There's no onion at the next platform but you have to get across anyway, so jump up, dash right, and spam Rowanveld with abandon. If you don't, make it restart the stage, otherwise you have to kill the White Roses and the Red Star and make a hard jump back to the left.

Reverse Reaction Boots: 3-011 - Use a slime to teleport past the barrier in 3-002 and follow the path to 3-011. Use bats to get high. I'd recommend evasion and daggers again.

Demon Saint's Dress: 4-016 - Wall jump off the right side of the wall at 4-012 twice and use Rowanveld spam to get to the opposite side and destroy the barrier crystal. This will remove the barrier at 4-014. Drop down at 4-014, and follow the path to 4-016 and the item.

Flame Mist Dress: Kill Narju in Stage 2 without dying. Available on Normal Mode. You also earn boss kill items in Boss Only Mode, which saves you time in case you die in the boss fight.

Princess’s Vestment - Kill Elshira's Second Phase in Stage 6 without dying. Available on Hard Mode or above. You also earn boss kill items in Boss Only Mode, which saves you time in case you die in the boss fight.

Rusty Sword: 2-001 – If you go all the way right, it’s impossible to miss.

Obsidian Tail Blade: Remove Teranoias's Tail Blade in Stage 1 without dying. Available on Normal Mode. You also earn boss kill items in Boss Only Mode, which saves you time in case you die in the boss fight.

Crimson Magic Horn: Remove Teranoias's Red Horn in Stage 1 without dying. Available on Normal Mode. You also earn boss kill items in Boss Only Mode, which saves you time in case you die in the boss fight.

Verdant Magic Horn: Remove the Dagneiv's Green Nail in Stage 3 without dying. Available on Normal Mode. You also earn boss kill items in Boss Only Mode, which saves you time in case you die in the boss fight.

Dark Magic Horn: Remove Gasyukal's Horn in Stage 6 without dying. Available on Normal Mode. You also earn boss kill items in Boss Only Mode, which saves you time in case you die in the boss fight.

Handmade Rosary: Kill Vizet in Stage 1 without dying. Available on Normal Mode. You also earn boss kill items in Boss Only Mode, which saves you time in case you die in the boss fight.

Dark Crystal Ring: 4-088 - After killing the Forgotten Statue, follow the path to the left. When you're between two sets of stairs, jump towards the screen, and follow the path to the left until you reach the area with this item.

Silver Ornamental Flute: Kill Elshira's First Phase in Stage 6 without dying. Available on Normal Mode. You also earn boss kill items in Boss Only Mode, which saves you time in case you die in the boss fight.

Ancient Dragon’s Whistle: 4-056 - Instead of heading up from 4-051 to 4-046, where you had that horrifying ordeal to get the Diamond and Inhuman Blade, head down towards the screen. There's a shiny giant gold golem in this room that has to die to destroy a barrier protecting this orb. So, kill it.

Holy Sword Certificate: 4-097 - Kill Shuvalzard without dying. He's a boss monster, but luckily there's a fresh supply of pumpkins to refill your health if he whittles you down too far. To get to 4-097, follow the steps right in 4-008 until you see the defense orb. Jump over to the balcony, and follow the path until you see the stairs. Jump away from the screen twice, and you’re there.

Dark Matter: Kill Soray's Second Phase in Stage 5 without dying. Available on Normal Mode, I think. You also earn boss kill items in Boss Only Mode, which saves you time in case you die in the boss fight.

  • Collect all Artifacts.

Music Room Key: 6-000 - At the bottom rightmost corner of the first area. Hard to miss.

Terror Medallion: Kill the Black Star armors at 4-017. Not guaranteed, bring Thief's Dagger. It might be necessary to get this on Hard to ensure a Fear Mode unlock.

Nightmare Medallion: Kill the Nightmare of Legend at 3-040. Not guaranteed, bring Thief's Dagger. It might be necessary to get this on Fear to unlock Planeriel difficulty level.

Statue of Evil Intent: Kill the Forgotten Statue at 4-082. Follow the instructions for Archive 5, but once you're up there go up to the next section. It's a Gargoyle type surrounded by at least five other gargoyle types, so kill the regulars to prepare a staging area, use fear to keep the fireballs from reaching you, and use daggers to deal consistent damage. Bring Thief's Dagger, too.

Impossible Reflection: 4-110 - To get to the 100 series of areas, go up where Shuvalzard is, then use evasion and daggers to go get to the pair of pillars far directly above you. Wall jump your way up. When you get to the stairs, go right. There will be an annoying puzzle with pumpkins along the path that will require you to push pumpkins across gaps before knocking them up, along with teleport dagger orbs. Use the diagonal slash method I suggested for Aquamarine to ensure height and distance when making the pumpkins cross, and knock it further with your sword to ensure it gets there. (The three orbs behind the red wall at the top of the puzzle are all health ups, so move on unless 3000 health is worth doing this puzzle again to you). Follow the path to the left and up to get this item, then backtrack to the other white arrow to get Orichalcum, Archive 5, and to kill the miniature pumpkin.

Silver Pocketwatch: Kill the White Rose armors in 5-002. Not guaranteed, bring Thief's Dagger.

Explorer Heart Stone: 2-011 - When you get to the giant circular platform in 2-001, jump down to reach a secret path, and then jump down again. You will have to jump up immediately after you move down to get this item, otherwise you'll miss it.

Bravestone: 2-010 - Instead of jumping from 2-010 to 2-011, run off the right side of the platform and follow the path to the item. Incidentally, this is also a shortcut to the boss.

Philosopher’s Stone: Destroy the Gasyukal’s Philosopher’s Stone in Stage 6. Available only on Hard mode or above. You also earn boss kill items in Boss Only Mode, which saves you time in case you die in the boss fight.

Orichalcum: 4-115 - Get this on the same run as Impossible Reflection. On the opposite side of 115, you will find Archive 5, be sure to grab that too.

Light Crystal: 5-070 – In the next area to the right from where you knocked the onion up to get Elixir, there's another immortal onion. You have to knock this guy up onto the right ledge and move him into the next room. Once in the next room, you need to get him onto the center platform, then get him AND yourself onto the high left platform. If you don’t join him there, you're going to have to start the stage all over again because you can't teleport to where he is and you can't reset the puzzle. Anyway, once you get yourselves up there, knock him left and use him to climb one final time and head to the left, following the path until it dumps you in a room with a miniature onion boss monster and the Light Crystal orb. You WILL need to kill the onion for another item, try to do it while you're here so you don't have to do the puzzle again like I did. You probably should bring Thief’s Dagger.

Black Steel: 3-076 - Easy to find. It’s in plain sight; some minor wall jumping is required to get it.

Hermit's Honey: Kill Su-Ru-Me at 5-000. There is a staging area high above where you start that requires, what else, onion climbing. Go Right, Right, Up, Left, Up. There's no onion, of course, so you'll have to jump up and left and then spam Rowanveld to get to where it and the Forbidden Text is. It's really tiny but easy to kill - just use Fear. Honestly, since he's so easy to avoid I would recommend doing this on Fear or Planeriel because you can stock up on Fear-boosting items and you don't have to fight anything before you reach him. Take him on with Thief’s Dagger as well, to avoid a repeat climb.

Mithril: 4-063 – On the path to Brunhild, you’ll come across an immortal pumpkin. Knock it up to get to the Mithril.

Mystery Pumpkin: Kill the mini pumpkin at 4-117. Get this guy on the same run as Orichalcum, Archive 5, and Impossible Reflection, otherwise you face puzzle repetition. Use Thief's Dagger.

Mystery Onion: Kill the mini onion at 5-070. See Light Crystal for details on getting there.

Thick Jelly: Kill the slimes in Stage 1. Easy, impossible to miss.

Spongy Jelly: Kill the jellies in Stage 3. Easy, impossible to miss.

Bat Fang: Kill the bats in Stage 2. Easy, impossible to miss.

Vampire Fang: Kill the bats in Stage 4. Easy, impossible to miss.

Bottled Souls: Kill the Grudge Souls at 2-019. Use Fear, they don't take damage from anything else. Not guaranteed, but you can't really increase your chances with Thief's Dagger.

Bottled Hatred: Kill the Lunacy Haunts in Stage 6. Bring Thief's Dagger.

Potato: Kill the Larva in Stage 3. They only take damage from daggers. Easy, impossible to miss.

Golden Potato: Kill Unknown at 3-036. This is a boss monster, and his defense is atrociously high. Get the attack up orbs that you find, and be sure to be on Fear or higher so you can increase your dagger's damage output with items as far as it will go. Just stay in the air and spam daggers while in Red Aura to increase your damage, and eventually he'll go down. Definitely bring Thief's Dagger - I got him once without it and ended up with nothing.

Bronze Armor: Kill Magic Armors in Stage 2. Easy, impossible to miss.

Copper Armor: Kill Blood Armors in Stage 2. Easy, impossible to miss. They start showing up near the end, but I’ve always gotten it if I killed them.

Dark Copper Armor: Kill Dark Armors in Stage 4. Easy, impossible to miss.

Silver Armor: Kill Holy Armors in Stage 5. Easy, impossible to miss.

Gold Armor: Kill Gilgamesh at 4-059. See Opal for details on reaching this area. This guy's the hardest of the boss mobs because there's nowhere to escape to for health replenishment purposes. Collect all the stat increase orbs you can find before going after him. You can pop in and out of 4-058 to spam Rowanvelds on him, but you run the risk of him running past you and through a red mist barrier, and then you have to reset because you're trapped. I didn't go after him with Thief's Daggers and I got it, but your mileage may vary.

Abyss Garb: Kill Wrights in Stage 3. These are the green-colored Lich enemies.

Pumpkin: Kill Wonderful KaVoCya at 3-059. He's a boss monster, but he's not too hard to take down. Bring Thief's Dagger just to be safe.

Onion: Kill Delicious TaMaNeGi at 3-046. He's a boss monster, but he's not too hard to take down. Bring Thief's Dagger just to be safe.

Monkshood: Kill the bats in Stage 6. Easy, impossible to miss.

Crystal Skull: Kill the Heartless Lich at 5-001. He's guarding the pit of failure. If he's beating you up too badly, just use the pink warp pad to beat some health out of the immortal onions and then jump back into the fray. Bring Thief's Dagger.

Angel’s Halo: 5-035 - One of many items littered among the roosts in Stage 5. If you use the pumpkins to move from right to left and up and down, you'll get it easy.

Angel’s Wings: 5-024 - One of many items littered among the roosts in Stage 5. If you use the pumpkins to move from right to left and up and down, you'll get it easy.

Demon's Tail: 3-046 - In an orb to the far, far right in this area, past TaMaNeGi. Kill TaMaNeGi while you're here if you haven’t already.

Demon's Wings: Kill Golden Radiance at 3-031. I honestly don't remember how I killed this bat. I'm assuming I went into a trance and took it easy after I killed the surrounding ghosts. Be sure to kill the surrounding ghosts - so long as the bat is your only enemy, you're going to be better off.

Intelligent Glasses: 4-002 - Go up as if you're going to 4-008, but jump back to 4-006 before you do the wall jumps. Jump down, then dash to the right. Drop off the left side of this platform, and then dash

Thick Glasses: 5-055 - One of many items littered among the roosts in Stage 5. If you use the pumpkins to move from right to left and up and down, you'll get it easy.

Mysterious Button: Kill Red Star D’Artagnan at 5-002. Not guaranteed, bring Thief's Dagger. Unlocks Boss Mode for you.

Forbidden Text: 5-000 - Item is by Su-Ru-Me, see Hermit's Honey for details.

Book of Adventure: 3-006 - Go to the far left, and use Rowanveld PM and teleporting daggers on the jellies to get up very high. They usually don't give you time, but keep at it.

Archive 1: 4-042 - Go right on the stairs when you have the option to, and cross the chasm with the Rowanveld dash. You can use the pumpkin if you honestly want to. I know from practice it isn't necessary, but help is help.

Archive 2: 4-000 - Jump up at the bridge at 4-001. Jump down until you're at 4-000 again, and then follow the path to the right.

Archive 3: 4-017 - After the Black Stars, go between the columns and jump up, not down. Move as far right as you can, then backtrack to the last chasm. Drop down, then dash right. It should be around there.

Archive 4: 4-081 - Make like you're going for Shuvalzard, but don't enter his staging area. Instead, take the left stairs down. Go down to the next area, and when you see the second pillar in the background, there will be a red arrow that will let you jump down. Follow it until you get to a wide flat area, then follow the right path until you reach an area with a pumpkin. Use the pumpkin to gain height on both the left and right side of the room to destroy barrier crystals - the right side has some teleporting orbs you need to use, remember that you can also use teleporting daggers on barrier crystals. With both crystals destroyed, wall jump up the pillars next to the crystal platforms to reach the next area. Fall off the left ledge and dash right, repeat this twice more to reach the platform with the archive.

Archive 5: 4-115 - See Impossible Reflection for the path to get here. It's paired with Orichalcum.
