Crash Dummy is a 2D side-scrolling platformer in which you take control of CID, a simple crash dummy who is sent on a mission to rescue his friend Mia from the clutches of the evil D-TROIT. There are 2 tutorial levels and 14 main levels you need to complete and you will earn every trophy just by finishing the game. The main levels alternate between regular levels and boss levels. The controls are very simple, though a little inconsistent, and the enemies aren’t much of a challenge. Overall it’s a decent game with a nice style and good level variation.

Controls:

r1.png - Dash Right
l1.png - Dash Left
lsn.png - Move
lsse.png or lssw.png - Stealth Movement
cross.png - Jump
circle.png - Attack / Shoot
square.png - Draw / Holster Weapon
l3.png - Hold for Special Attack

Tips:

The biggest challenge in the game comes from the controls. I found them to be inconsistent which would often lead to deaths. Jumping in particular seemed to be the most inconsistent action. When you encounter stealth sections you need to hold lsse.png or lssw.png depending on the direction you want to go. It's an awkward control scheme to use and I found that the stealth movement often triggered when I just wanted to move normally which again would lead to deaths and timed sequence failures. It’s annoying and something to be aware of.

You can bypass the majority of enemies if you wish but there will be times where you have to kill some enemies so you can progress to the next area. The puzzles are very simple and you will basically be interacting with red buttons and switches all the time to open entrances to the next area. You have a gun that can use 3 different types of ammo; fire, ice and regular bullets, though you won’t have access to all 3 ammo types in every level. The ammo types also play a part in some puzzles and general traversal. For example; you will need to use the ice ammo during the magma levels to freeze platforms so you can get around.

You will begin each level with 3 lives. Don’t worry about this at all. If you happen to run out of lives you can select continue from the game over screen and not only will you get another 3 lives but you will start back at the exact spot you died and all progress you have made in the level will remain intact. Essentially this means you have infinite lives so don’t worry about collecting extra lives or trying to conserve the lives you begin with.

Pausing the game:

There is no pause menu in the game. Do not press the options button as it will only boot you back to the level select screen and you don’t want to figure this out for yourself when you’re near the end of a level. It’s odd that you can’t pause the game but it isn’t a deal breaker. Just find a quiet spot in-game and leave the game idle if you need to leave it alone for a while.

Step 1: Complete every level

This is the only step towards the trophy_platinum.png. You need to complete the 2 tutorial levels and 14 main levels. The level and enemy design is quite varied but the objective is always the same in that you basically have to make your way through each level by interacting with switches and buttons which in turn activate lifts and open doors to new areas. There is a slight Metroidvania element to the game as you will be backtracking a lot through each level as these new areas begin to open up. When you first start the game it might seem easy to get lost but the majority of levels aren’t that large. If you get stuck on a level and can't find a way to progress anymore it probably means that you missed a button or a switch somewhere so backtrack to try and find it. Because of the nature of the game it isn't really possible to do a full text walkthrough for each level but you shouldn't run into many issues due to the simplicity of the game.

At the end of this step, you will earn:

17 trophies ( 10  3  )

  • Crash Dummy!

You’re more than just a dummy, congratulations on your new plat!
  • Tutorial 1: Chimney

    Story-related and cannot be missed

You will earn this trophy after completing the opening tutorial level in the game. This is a very simple level that introduces you to some of the basic mechanics in the game. Begin by interacting with the red switch on the right to activate the lift. Follow the instructions until you reach the ground floor. Destroy the 2 bots here and then interact with the 2 buttons by jumping on them to open the door. Exit through this door to complete the level and earn this trophy.

  • Tutorial 2: Courtyard

    Story-related and cannot be missed

You will have a bit more to do in this tutorial level but it’s still pretty simple. This level introduces you to the stealth and weapon mechanics. Start by moving stealthily along the dashed lines to open the door to the next area. Jump on the yellow jump pad here to bounce up to the upper level. Shoot at the target to the right to open another door below you, then jump down and exit through this door to enter the next area. Here you will learn about dashing. Follow the instructions and make your way through the area. Once you reach the end, exit through the door to complete the level and earn this trophy.

  • Dummies Warehouse

    Story-related and cannot be missed

This is the first main level of the game. You shouldn't have any issues with this level. Make sure to interact with every button and switch you see as you make your way through the level. There's a couple of sections with conveyor belts that have saw blades and purple gas so take your time during these sections. Make your way to the end of the level and exit through the door to complete the level and earn this trophy.

  • The Tunnel

    Story-related and cannot be missed

This is the first boss level in the game. This boss uses a very basic attack pattern. It will shoot a single projectile a couple of times and then it will jump to the opposite side of the area and repeat this attack. You need to shoot at the boss while jumping over these projectiles. Once you get its health down to the halfway point it will begin the second stage attack. This is the same as the first stage except this time it will shoot 3 projectiles at once instead of 1. Keep shooting at it while jumping over the projectiles and you will destroy it pretty quickly. Once you have defeated the boss you will complete the level and earn this trophy.

  • Stinky Sewers

    Story-related and cannot be missed

This is another straightforward level which shouldn't pose any issues. There will be a few parts during this level with flying enemies and you must kill these guys in order to open doors to the next area. There's a few sections with toxic gas and other hazards such as acid pools but these can be easily avoided. This level will also introduce underwater sections. You won't have an unlimited amount of oxygen during these parts so you must make your way through them as quick as possible. Always be on the lookout for buttons and switches as you progress to avoid having to backtrack later on. You'll know you're at the end of the level once you see an explosive barrel you can shoot which is blocking a yellow jump pad. Use this jump pad to make your way up some platforms to complete the level and earn this trophy.
  • Acid swamp

    Story-related and cannot be missed

This level might appear tricky at first but it's really not any more difficult than the previous levels. You will be crossing a lot of platforms and using yellow jump pads often during this level. There's a few sections where you will need to shoot targets and pass timed sequences so you can progress to the next area. There's some more underwater sections during this level too. Once you get to the final area of the level you will need to interact with some red buttons and then make a dash for the exit. If you don't reach the exit in time then you will need to repeat this part again. Once you reach the exit you will complete the level and earn this trophy.
  • Swamp Monster

    Story-related and cannot be missed

This is the second boss level. You need to activate the large saw blade to damage the boss. There is a platform on each side of the area that moves up and down. You need to jump on these platforms to reach buttons on the wall and then interact with them which causes the saw to move across the area and damage the boss. You need to alternate between the buttons on each wall while being careful to jump over the green acid as you do so. Two more buttons will activate on the ground once the boss is almost dead. Jump on these buttons to activate a trap above the boss which will finish it off. Once you have defeated the boss you will complete the level and earn this trophy.

  • The Compound

    Story-related and cannot be missed

This is a pretty straightforward level. Near the beginning of the level you will need to use the fire ammo to burn some wood logs which will reveal a button you can interact with. Interact with this button to activate a lift. There's a few timed sequences during this level so you will need to be quick during these parts. There isn't anything else during this level that should cause you any trouble. Once you reach the end of the level there will be another button you need to interact with which will begin another timed sequence. You need to quickly dash right and then exit to complete the level and earn this trophy.

  • D-Troit's Army Boss

    Story-related and cannot be missed

This is the third boss level. This boss appears to be tricky at first due to the small area you fight in but it's actually quite easy to deal with. You need to destroy the boss along with two smaller flying bots which will aid it during the battle. The boss will use two main attacks; a jump attack and a laser attack but both of these attack patterns are easy to dodge. Once you get its health down to the halfway point a barrier at each end of the area will lower, allowing you to use yellow jump pads to jump up to a ledge so you can reach the smaller bots. Remain on this ledge and destroy the two flying bots, then finish off the boss to complete the level and earn this trophy.

  • Ghosts 'n' Dummies

    Story-related and cannot be missed

This is a slightly larger level than the previous areas but it's still simple enough to navigate. This is the first level to introduce puzzles involving coloured flames. It's very simple though so don't worry. For these flame puzzles you simply need to change the colour of the flame so it matches the colour shown on the stand below. If it's green, change the flame to green. If it's blue, change the flame to blue. There's also a lot of crumbling platforms during this level which can be annoying due to the somewhat sluggish controls. There's also headstones with RIP written on them. You need to interact with some of these headstones by jumping on them which will open up new areas. There's a few timed sequences during this level which happen to be really tight so these sections might take a few tries to get right. Once you reach the end of the level you will need to interact with another headstone and then make a dash for the exit to complete the level and earn this trophy.
  • Ice Mountain

    Story-related and cannot be missed

This is the first level in the snowy region and here we get introduced to some new mechanics. You will be making good use of your weapon here as you will be melting ice and freezing geysers quite a bit during this level. More ammo can be found by breaking ice crystals or defeating enemies. Something to be aware of during this level are the icey platforms. You have no real control as you slide across these so you need to time your jumps and movements almost perfectly. When you reach the end of the level there will be a moving platform you need to take to the opposite side. Jump off the platform once you reach the other side and then exit to complete the level and earn this trophy.

  • Big Foot

    Story-related and cannot be missed

This is the fourth boss level. This is the only level in the game that is actually somewhat difficult because you will be running non-stop as the boss gives chase and at the same time you need to open barriers along the way by shooting at targets, all while avoiding other obstacles too. In addition to this, you will also have to deal with sliding along the icey sections which can easily lead to mistimed jumps. The main problem here are the controls which will let you down a lot due to how inconsistent they are and that's really what makes this level difficult. You will likely need to try this level a few times until you get a perfect run. The one saving grace is that the level itself is very short and a successful run only takes little over a minute to do. There isn’t much of a strategy to follow here, simply move as fast as possible and try to hit targets on the first attempt. If the boss does catch up with you it won’t kill you in one hit so don’t panic, just focus again and continue moving. When you reach the final section there will be a yellow jump pad which will catapult you away from the grasp of the boss, completing the level and earning you this trophy in the process.

  • Magma!

    Story-related and cannot be missed

This is the first level in the fiery region and here we get introduced to some new mechanics. You will be using your weapon to freeze flaming platforms quite a bit during this level. The main thing to be wary of during this level are the lava pools. There will be a lot of platforming sections and sections where you need to shimmy across poles. There will also be a few sections where you need to kill flying enemies in order to progress. When you reach the end of the level there will be some moving platforms. Make your way across these platforms and move towards the large double doors. A cutscene will play and the level will be completed afterwards and you will earn this trophy.
  • Fire Troll

    Story-related and cannot be missed

This is the fifth boss level. All 3 ammo types are available for you to use here but you can ignore the regular bullets. What you want to do is grab the ice ammo and shoot at the boss until it freezes. You then need to grab the fire ammo and get up close to the boss and shoot it again. Repeat this process until the second stage of the fight begins. This gets a little more tricky now because half the floor will continuously rise and fall into the lava. You need to repeat the strategy from the first stage by grabbing the ice ammo and then the fire ammo, this time while dodging the holes in the floor. Repeat this process until the boss is finally destroyed after which you will complete the level and earn this trophy.

  • D-Troit's Castle

    Story-related and cannot be missed

This is the largest level in the game and will therefore take the longest to complete, however it's not difficult. I suggest that you take your time so you don't miss any buttons or switches as you progress through the level. There will be quite a lot of backtracking involved here and a lot of enemies, though you can bypass the majority of them. There's again some very tight timed sequences which you will need to sucessfully pass in order to progress. You will eventually reach the end of the level where you will need to quickly dash past some mines and enemies to reach large double doors. A cutscene will play and the level will be completed afterwards and you will earn this trophy.
  • Puppets Showdown!

    Story-related and cannot be missed

This is the sixth boss level and the final level overall. This is a pretty straightforward fight broken into 2 stages. The first stage will see D-TROIT shooting bombs at you. You can ignore the ammo here for the time being. You need to deflect these bombs back at him by hitting them. The timing is very forgiving here. Once you get D-TROIT's health down to the halfway point the next stage will begin. D-TROIT will exit the area for the time being and he will call some backup in to deal with you. Now is the time to pick up the fire ammo and deal with these guys. When the backup is dealt with, D-TROIT will enter the area again and you can start attacking him using the fire ammo. Just be careful of his jump and projectile attacks. He will leave the area one more time after you knock his health down another bit and more backup will come. Deal with the backup again and when D-TROIT enters the area again for the final time you can finally finish him off to complete the level and earn this trophy along with the trophy_platinum.png.
