Introduction
From the developers of the famous Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 and Persona 4 series comes Catherine, the adult themed, romantic-horror, and puzzler by Atlus USA. First released in Japan early in 2011, the truth is this game is nothing like you've played before. As the game's packaging suggest an adult theme, it comes with that along with a mature narrative that explores all the complex relationships and fidelity between men and women. Vincent, whom is the main character is a 32-year old systems engineer and has to deal with real-life serious decisions. You initially learn he is currently dating Katherine, a 32-year old office manager who wants to marry him. Only that he is not ready to commit. But in a sweep of one evening, he gets seduced by a younger blonde beauty, coincidentally named Catherine. The bulk of the game play takes place in Vincent's nightmares. As each nightmare is a block-based puzzle, blocks can be arranged to move and climb up to the top of each level to survive the horror and terror of blocks below you falling. It is a race to salvation and the end the nightmare but only for that night! In-between these nightmares, choices will need to be made during the day that will affect his relationships with those around him. The dating-sim part includes phone text messaging, talking to friends, having drinks at a bar, and making life changing decisions that could affect the feelings of those around him.
Trophy-wise, getting a sizable percentage of the trophies is not entirely difficult, as the game includes several difficulty modes. Including a easy mode to get through the Golden Playhouse, the game's story mode. The extreme difficulty factor of Catherine is the precision, patience, and cognitive skills to master each nightmare stage and earn Gold Prizes on hard difficulty. Along with clearing the Babel stages, where the puzzles are completely random and will put all the skills you are taught to the true endurance test. Challenging to say the least, but a fun one to take on!
Roadmap
Step 1: Playthrough the Golden Playhouse on Normal difficulty, staying close to neutral as possible until day 5.
This will be your first run in the golden playhouse which is the story mode of Catherine. In this playthrough you progress through all 9 days of nightmare stages, help all the patrons, drink and listen to all alcohol-related trivia. There are seven trivia facts for each drink to listen to, and you only can listen to one per-day, per-drink. Interacting with all patrons consists of talking to each one, on each-day and giving them positive answers. Including on-landings between stages as they will be in an alternate form. These tasks make up the missable trophies that you will need to be aware of each day while playing through the Golden Playhouse. Use the following guides to help you during your playthrough:
As you progress through nightmare stages, there will plenty of opportunities to unlock all the block-related trophies. Many of these can come through natural game play, but there are a few that you might have to improvise to perform the tasks required. If you somehow miss or mess up an opportunity, you can always use and replay the level. Of course you can also always use your cell phone and going to AWARDS to stage select and replay any stage for these trophies. Follow the trophy guide for the specific areas and strategies to unlock the following trophies:
Push it to the Limit!
Have an Ice Day
Bomberlamb
I Can Fly!
Take Your Time
Ideally, you will want to say close to neutral karma as possible when appropriate. The reasons for playing on normal difficulty is to prepare you for puzzles on hard difficulty. It is not recommended to start out on easy difficulty as it does not really prepare you for that difficulty level. You also cannot unlock the babel stages unless you gold prize the stages on normal or hard. Getting Gold Prizes will shorten the time it takes during clean-up runs, by allowing you to "skip" the level in subsequent runs which will speed up the time to get every ending instead of replaying the stages several more times.
Once you get to Day 5 make an additional save as your “branch off” point. From here you can decide to stay neutral, or progress and go all-in towards Chaos or Law karma. As there will more than enough options to get to 100% in either direction if you select the optimal decisions during interactions, and during text message replies. Follow the trophy guide for details on the following missable trophies so you do not miss them in your playthrough. By doing so, at the end of day 8 you will unlock the following trophies:
Read All About It!
A New Look
Mother Inferior
Love is Patient, Love is Kind
One Last Case
Everyday Hero
Text Junkie
Sake Sensei
Beer Baron
Cocktail Connoisseur
Whisky Wiseman
You Don't Have To Go Home...
Step 2: Make extra saves to further branch your ending paths on day 9.
On Day 9 you will want to decide which ending path you will want to take depending on where your karma mater is. At this point make a another branching save before starting Stage 9-2. That way you can come back to it to unlock the rest of the endings on that same path you chose earlier. You will also notice some decisions may not require reverting to a save back at 9-2. Follow the trophy guide for the following eight ending trophies on the specific decision options that will need to be taken for your chosen ending based on your karma level:
Chaos
Nighty Night (Bad Lover)
Sleepless Nights (Normal Cheater)
Lord of the Night (True Cheater)
Neutral (Middle of the gauge)
A Life Without Regrets... (True Freedom)
Law
Hit the Road, Vincent (Bad Cheater)
Just Like Old Times (Normal Lover)
Starting a New Life (True Lover)
Whatever, Buddy (Normal Freedom)
Step 3: Clean-up the rest of the Golden Playhouse endings, and any missable trophies on Normal (Optional).
At this step, you will have completed a successful playthrough of the Golden Playhouse and unlocked one ending. At this point you can make a decision to go straight to the next step, replay the golden playhouse on hard difficulty, getting gold prizes on each stage, and then following the ending guide to unlock the rest of the endings.
Or if you want to enjoy the rest of the endings as soon as possible, you can revert back to any earlier Stage 9 saves to unlock the rest of the endings. As you will be able to skip through any stage you earned a gold prize in. Gold Prizes will speed-up your clean-up as you will be able to branch and play-though all the endings much faster by pressing and selecting "skip" for that nightmare stage without replaying it again. The choice is yours here, otherwise you can clean-up all the trophies in your hard difficulty play through.
An important note is that Gold Prizes carry over throughout your entire save file for that difficulty you played on. So if you missed any of the patron or drink trophies, simply start a brand-new Golden Playhouse game and skip through cut-scenes and stages. Starting from Day-2, work on those tasks immediately, leave the bar, and then "skip" the nightmare stage. Keep repeating this process until the end of Day 8 which is when those trophies unlock. As wrapping these trophies up will not take a lot of time.
If you have no missable trophies remaining, Simply reload your Day 6 save, make the appropriate karma choices for the ending paths you did not complete earlier, and simply "skip" through the cut-scenes and nightmare stages. Keep repeating this process as needed, and if you want to save more time, once again make any additional saves starting on Day 9 as-needed. By the end of this step you will have unlocked all the endings, and have earned the following trophies:
True Freedom!
Nighty Night
Hit the Road, Vincent
Just like Old Times
Sleepless Nights
Starting a New Life
Lord of the Night
Whatever, Buddy
A Life Without Regrets...
Dreams Come True
Step 4: Replay the Golden Playhouse and earn Gold Prizes on nightmare stages on Hard difficulty.
This step can be performed anytime during your playthrough. If you followed the roadmap to this point, you can open any Golden Playhouse save and switch the difficulty to HARD by using the menu. You can use your cell phone under AWARDS as a Stage Select and begin working towards getting all Gold Prizes in the levels. As playing through nightmare stages through this method gives you unlimited lives to work with.
Another option is if you want to be able to go through the golden playhouse and clean-up any previous missing trophies. Start a brand new game on hard and complete the Golden Playhouse with Gold Prizes on each stage. One advantage to playing for Golden Prizes through this method over stage select on the cell phone is that you can save your game anytime on the landings, versus the cell phone where have to complete the entire stage in one-sitting. This could be helpful if you feel you cannot Golden Prize stage 9 in one-sitting for example. The only disadvantage to this method is you don't get unlimited lives.
Initially we do not recommend starting the Golden Playhouse on hard difficulty because it is a lot to take in initially, and adding in the extra puzzle difficulty from the get-go will likely lead to frustration. As a new player would not have a full-grasp of all the block mechanics that is required for this difficulty level. Clearing the Golden Playhouse on Normal difficulty, and even going through Rapunzel, should expand your skill-set to make this manageable. If you need help with resolving any hard puzzles solutions, you can refer to video assistance in the guide to help with puzzle solutions as Golden Playhouse is always a set puzzle setup in each stage, and it is also worth noting hard difficulty nightmare stages between the Japanese and North American versions are completely the same. By obtaining Gold Prizes in all levels, at the end of this step you will have earned the following trophy:
The Golden Child
Step 5: Beat all the stages in Rapunzel.
The Rapunzel arcade game is located in the Stray Sheep Tavern. It is an arcade which is like a retro-version of the block puzzles themselves in the core game. The advantage of waiting to work on these trophies is that during your initial playthrough you only get three credits to use daily on the game. After clearing the Golden Playhouse, this will turn into unlimited credits. There are 128 levels in total (64 levels in each mode, the second is an "Extra" mode.) The game also has separate save states so you can work on this anytime. You initial goal is to get through the first 64 stages and collect all the rosaries (four in each mode, for a total of eight) so you can get the "true" ending. This will continue your trophy progress, and you will also open up the second 64 stages. Refer to the trophy guide for the detail of the following trophies which will be earned at the end of this step:
Past a Heap of Puzzles
A Mystery Within a Puzzle
Legendary Prince
Step 6: Complete all four Babel stages.
This step becomes available immediately as you unlock Babel's Calling, 3 Star-Man, and 5 Star-Man by getting Gold Prizes on Normal or Hard difficulty. Babel is a one or two-player local game mode where in each stage you climb themed towers. The puzzles, or more specially all the block pattern arrangements fall at a random pace. This means there is no absolute solution for each level. While there may be similarities at times, pure skill will be put to the test here. This is considered the final step mainly because of it difficulty, and the final Babel stage, Axis Menaldi, will throw every possible block in the game at you.
As mentioned earlier, Babel is also a 2-player co-op mode. When playing with two players, player one will play as Vincent as the second player will play as Katherine. As both players will be able to conquer Babel together. If you have cleared the Golden Playhouse at this point, you will already understand from a high-level how this mode works with two players. This is important to note because if you have the ability to play 2-player local co-op, this can be an effective way to conquer this mode with somewhat simpler and shorter puzzles. As the amount of steps required to completion is notably shorter than in one-player. For instance, Altar is about 50 steps less than having 150 steps to climb by playing solo. Do consider this opportunity if you have the means to play with another skilled player locally. You can also flip between two-controllers and control both players yourself if you do not have a local partner. By the end of this step, you will have earned the following trophies:
Altar Conquered
Menhir Conquered!
Obelisk Conquered!
A God is Born!
Cheers to You!
