Candleman is a platforming game by developer Spotlightor, published in 2017. You play as the tiny stub of a candle, originally living in an abandoned ship, who dreams of better things and ventures out into the world to find a new life.

The main mechanic of the game is Candleman's ability to light himself to reveal his path. However, Candleman only has about ten seconds' worth of wax, thus you need to alternate between using quick bursts of Candleman's flame and lighting the optional candles around the stage to keep the path lit (be warned though, as those candles will eventually burn out as well).

Currently, the game is only available in the Hong Kong and Chinese PSN stores. However, both versions of the game are in English (outside of the initial introductory text before the main menu) so if you pick it up, you will have no problem understanding the story.

Step 1: Play through the game

The majority of the list will come just from playing the game. Play through all twelve chapters. Try to light all the candles in each stage as you go to save time, as most of the candles will be directly in your path anyway and the ones that aren't will require minimal exploring. Don't worry if you miss any, as you will be able to select stages at any point once you've cleared them. Note however that whether it's your initial run or chapter select, you will still need to finish whatever stage you're on for the lit candles to actually save to your game.

By the end of this step, you will have earned:

Spark to a Flame
Led by Fate
The World Outside
Pay the Price
The Little Candle That Guides the Way
The Candle That Brings Warmth
The Candle That Ignites Others
Why Does the Candle Burn

...and if you lit all candles:

Spread the Light
Lighthouse Keeper

Step 2: Cleanup

This may not be necessary, especially if you lit all the candles during your initial run. If you did not, now is the time to go back to chapter select and clean those up, just keep in mind you will need to complete the stage for the candles to register as having been lit. Also, load up Stage 1-1 and unlock the two miscellaneous death trophies if you didn't earn them naturally in Step 1.

By the end of this step, you will have earned:

The Limit

...and finally: A Brighter Flame ! Congratulations!

    General tips:

    • Don't ever hold down the burn (/) button. instead, briefly tap them to get a burst of light. You only have ten seconds worth of wax to get through each stage and tapping the burn button will get you through most stages with only about half of Candleman's wax.
    • You have ten lives in each stage. Whenever you clear a stage, you will go back to ten lives.
    • The only thing that you will always be able to see, regardless of light level, are candles and whatever wax Candleman has shed. Use this to your advantage and briefly light Candleman on tricky ledges to mark where they are so you can more easily navigate platforms in case you die, thus saving precious wax.
    • In every stage, you will encounter at least one short, fat candle. These act as checkpoints. While they don't count towards the lit candles trophies, it is still very much in your interest to light these.
    • You do not regain your wax if you die and respawn at a checkpoint. If you've used a lot of wax by the time you hit a checkpoint, consider suiciding before lighting the checkpoint and trying again. You won't have to relight any candles on the way.
    • Take your time. You're not working against a timer and any jumps that may require timing will always give you multiple chances to make them.
    • Sometimes there will be puzzle doors where you will need to press buttons in a certain order. The solution is always scratched somewhere nearby – usually on the door or by the main switch(es) that let you access each button. You will never need to guess at the solution.
    • There will be some levels where fire will be an obstacle. Surprisingly, standing near these flames won't actually melt Candleman so again, take your time.
    • In the Chapter 9 "boss battle", having the boss' laser on you for a brief amount of time doesn't seem to affect Candleman's wax. Any longer, seems to and having its charged laser hit you definitely takes away wax so don't just rush through.
    • Chapter 10 introduces large blue candle ghosts. They will only come towards Candleman if he lights up. If they touch you, you will die instantly so watch out. That being said, don't be afraid to get close to them – you will often have to use their shadows to pass safely through Chapter 10's stages.
  • Light all candles in Chapters 1, 2 and 3.

    See Explorer.

  • Light all candles in Chapters 4, 5 and 6.

    See Explorer.

  • Light all candles in Chapters 7, 8 and 9.

    See Explorer.

  • Light all candles in Chapters 10, 11 and 12.

Each level has a set amount of candles; the amount in each level is listed on the chapter select screen so you will have a way to track this and all candle-related trophies. Additionally, whenever you light a candle in a stage, it will show you exactly how many candles are in the stage. For the most part, the candles will be directly in your path so this is a lot easier than it sounds, plus lighting candles is in your interest, as they will help you see more of the stage without sacrificing Candleman's life.

You don't need to light all candles without dying. If you die, whatever candles you've lit will remain lit; you do, however, need to light everything without failing back to the main menu (i.e. dying 10 times in a single stage).

Also note that eventually the candles will burn out but again, they're still counted as having been lit. Additionally, in Chapter 12, sometimes the candles will be lit by the fireworks you light instead of by you directly lighting them.

Finally, keep in mind that if you use chapter select to clean up these candles, you will need to finish the level to save your lit candle count.

AbillionX has made a 100% walkthrough video, which I've posted below. Following it will get you through all levels with all candles lit.

If you'd rather not load a 3.5 hour video, Game Guides Channel has a playlist of the entire game, broken down by chapter here: LINK.

  • Complete a level after failing 5 times.

This may come naturally while playing but if not, just load up Stage 1-1 from chapter select, hold down to die at least five times then finish the level.

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

You will unlock this after the cutscene following 11-1.

  • Little Candle discovered his flame can bring warmth.
