Introduction:

Candle: The Power of the Flame is a puzzle adventure game which follows Teku, a young man who must save his kidnapped tribe – and in particular, the tribe's shaman – from an enemy tribe. Teku isn't an ordinary young man, however – one of his hands is a candle, and this may just help him save the day.

While the art style is gorgeous, and overall the game is worth a play, keep in mind that the controls are a bit "heavy", which can make some of the platforming sections more difficult than they should be. Still, there's not too much of a challenge here, even for people who don't regularly play platformers.

Trophy-wise, the game is not difficult but nearly the entire list is missable. Take advantage of the eight manual save slots you have at your disposal – at the very least, I recommend having one separate save at the beginning of each act. If you only pay attention to one of the missable trophies the entire game, make sure it's Light Guide, which requires you to light everything you can over the entire game. Thankfully, you'll be required to light most things but there are still some candles you can miss.

Walkthrough:

Note that while I've broken this walkthrough up into the game's Acts, there is no scene/Act select in the game. Nearly all trophies are missable! At the very least, make a save at the beginning of each Act!

Step 1: Play through the Prologue

The prologue is just long tutorial to get you used to the game's controls. It's easiest to unlock one of the missable trophies here as opposed to later in the game.

By the end of this step, you will have earned:

Alley-oop
Adventure awaits

Step 2: Play Act 1

To get through Act I, you will want to find a boat key and two coins so you can pay the boat captain to take you to the next area of the game. There are a few miscellaneous (but missable) trophies to also unlock here and don't forget to light everything possible.

By the end of this step, you will have earned:

Back Slap
Rainmaker
Leap of Faith
Hara-Kiri
Run, Teku!
Dammit!
Across the marshes

Step 3: Play Act II

To get through Act II, you will need to rescue a villager and gain entry deep into the Wakcha's stronghold. Don't forget about the miscellaneous missable trophies here and keep working on lighting everything you can!

By the end of this step, you will have earned:

Sticky Plants
Do not annoy the animals
Nice try...
Merman
My Baby Blue
Oops!
The great storm

Step 4: Play Act III

Act III is the final one in the game. You're almost done but there's still some missable trophies to watch out for. There's also still a few candles left to light as well, for the one game-spanning trophy.

By the end of this step, you will have earned:

Feels like Another World
How ironic!
Bird Mother
Perfect Match
Your courage is not enough
The light of hope

...and hopefully:

Light Guide

...and finally: Completionist ! Congratulations!

24 trophies ( 10  )

  • Collect all trophies to unlock the platinum trophy.

    Congratulations!

  • Your journey is just beginning...

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

You will unlock this after completing the game's Prologue, which is really just an extended tutorial.

  • Think carefully how to protect yourself from that rock.

    Act I

Early in Act I, you will pull a lever and climb a ladder. At the top of the ladder, you will see to your left a rock shaped like a frog. Climb the two wooden platforms to get up to the frog. Jump on the top platform twice and it will break. Quickly run down to the ladder, then run under the platform on your left and wait for the frog head to crush you, unlocking this trophy.

You must specifically be under that platform ("protection") for this trophy to unlock; you cannot just stand there and wait for the frog head to run you down.

  • Escape from a chasing Wakcha.

    Act I

Note that while the walkthrough linked in the Roadmap recommends you unlocking this with the sleeping Wakcha at the boat captain's hut, this method doesn't seem to work for the PS4 version so don't waste your time trying to get it to work.

While there are several places where you can unlock this trophy, a good place I found was on the screen after you swim underwater, pull a lever to release an underwater barrier and swim past the barrier onto a new screen with a single Wakcha on it. Climb up a few ledges and provoke the Wakcha, then drop back down into the water. The Wakcha will not follow you and you will not die from the fall.

  • Use the light burst power of your candle to unveil a hidden painting

    Act I

On the screen with the boat captain and the sleeping Wakcha, you will need to sneak past the sleeping Wakcha, pull a lever to (temporarily) lower a curtain, drop to the ground to relight Teku's candle and climb back up to the ledge above the Wakcha (don't run). Once you're above the Wakcha with a lit candle, continue up another level and enter the hut. Light the candle on the left side of the hut just in case, then use a light burst (press ) to reveal a mural on the back wall. Look at it () to unlock this trophy.

  • Complete Act 1.

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

To complete Act I, you will need to find two coins and a boat key. Once you unlock the boat and give both coins to the boat captain, talk to her again. There will be a few cutscenes leading into Act II, during which you will unlock this trophy.

  • Jump over a Wakcha.

    Prologue

While this can be done with any Wakcha, this is probably easiest done during the game's Prologue.

After speaking with the injured villager in the hut, a Wakcha will appear. Ignore what the tutorial tells you and instead, run towards the Wakcha and jump. You will not actually jump over him but you will unlock this trophy.

  • Monkeys don't want to be disturbed.

    Act II

Early on in Act II, you'll enter a screen with a save point, a flying insect and a monkey scratching its head. Climb up to where the monkey is and try pulling the stone it's sitting on. It will kill you, but you'll get a trophy for your troubles.

  • I'm sure this is not what you wanted to do here...

    Act I

When you speak with the trader in the cave in Act I, he will give you a puzzle box. This trophy is tied to a specific fail state on the puzzle box. To unlock it, you want to rotate the red wheel so the arrow is in the bottom left, then rotate the blue wheel so the arrow is pointing at the top right, then rotate the yellow wheel so the arrow is pointing at the bottom right. Now select the grey wheel and press . After the pieces move, just press again and you'll unlock this trophy.

  • Jumping is not always possible.

    Act II

At the beginning of Act II, you will jump on top of a massive monkey statue head. On this head are some sticky plants and it's fairly obvious when you're on them. When you are, try to jump and you will unlock this trophy.

  • Complete Act 2.

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

To finish Act II, you will need to fashion a fake musician doll to swap with the real musician at the Wakcha camp and gather two jewels to gain access to the drum that will open the path forward. Once you've raised the drum and saved the musician, time your interaction with the drum with the lightning in the sky three times, opening the door and allowing you to progress, unlocking this trophy in the process.

  • This rings a bell...

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

At the beginning of Act III, you will need to solve a series of timing puzzles in order to get the guard's keys off of him. Once the keys are in your possession, unlock your cage and climb on top of it. Walk to the left of the cage and stand by the rope. When the guard comes out of his area, he'll run to your open cage and start freaking out – that's your cue to use the cutting stone on the rope, dropping the other cage on top of the guard, freeing the other prisoner and unlocking this trophy.

  • Remember to turn off your candle while you are hidden.

    Act II

Make sure you have a lit candle before attempting this trophy. At the Wakcha camp, wait until one of the Wakcha is taunting the tied-up person and the other is walking to the right. Use the wooden lid with the pot, then sneak into the nearby vase and wait for one of them to see the blue light coming from the vase. As long as your candle is lit, the Wakcha will find you and you'll unlock this trophy.

  • Your candle is not THAT powerful

    Act II

During the course of Act II, you will plant a fossilized seed that will allow you to enter a cave with your candle lit. Once inside, you'll see an artist painting on a large pillar. Use your light burst () to attempt to finish the painting to unlock this trophy.

  • Ignite all the fire spots throughout the adventure.

Thankfully, most of the fire spots you will be required to light as you progress thorough the game. The ones that are missable, though, are some non-essential candle boxes and (in Act II) flame sources on top of levers. None of them are hidden so if you keep this trophy in mind while playing and you should be fine. If you're especially worried, follow the walkthrough listed in the Roadmap.

Like with My Baby Blue, you may find that this unlocks earlier than you'd expect. For me, it unlocked in Act III in the room where you first encounter Tezca.

  • A mother always protects her children.

    Act III

During the course of Act III, you will need to place some branches under a bird nest and light them in order to determine which egg in the nest is made of stone. Once you've lit the fire, climb up to the nest and attempt to pick up the egg while the bird is still there.

  • Fall into the same trap twice.

    Act I

This can be done in many places but the quickest and easiest is on the screen after you swim underwater, pull a lever to release an underwater barrier, and swim past the barrier onto a new screen with a single Wakcha on it. Climb out of the water and walk over the bridge on your right. The bridge will crush Teku. When the checkpoint reloads, just walk across the bridge again.

  • Fire is not always your ally.

    Act III

After a lengthy platforming sequence on top of a large animal, Teku will be in a village and must solve a puzzle to light a torch and bring it up between two towers. Once you've solved this puzzle, jump off of the roof you're standing on into the fire and you'll unlock this trophy Don't worry; you won't have to do the puzzle again.

  • Drop from a high spot and stay alive.

    Act I

There are a few places in the game where this can be done but your first opportunity is in Act I, on the screen with the boat captain and the sleeping Wakcha.

After accessing the hut on the top level (Rainmaker), light the candle in the hut to open a door on the left side of the hut. Walk out of the door and push the stone to get rid of the Wakcha. From this ledge, jump off and fall to the ground – the giant flower on the lower level will keep Teku alive and you will earn this trophy.

  • Try to confront the monster on your own

    Act III

Near the end of Act III, you will sneak past the two guards in a small room with a candle in it, just outside of Tezca's throne room. You will push one down the hole in the previous room (which leads to the jail cells), and the other one will be knocked out by your ally. After your ally knocks out the second guard, do not follow him. Instead, keep walking right into Tezca's throne room. Tezca will immediately kill you and you will unlock this trophy.

  • Win the game and do not lose more than 1 token.

    Act III

In order to get a sphere needed for story progression, you will need to beat the trader in a board game. Punkyliar has created a literal perfect match for this trophy, where you won't lose any tokens so just follow the video.

  • Survive underwater for over a minute.

    Act II

In the same cave where you unlock Nice try..., you will need to cross three steaming pillars to reach a shrine and some water on the other side. Lighting the shrine will turn off the steam and allow you access to the story progression in the water below.

Jump into the water and swim down into a large open chamber. In the top right corner and on the middle left side are two airbags you can use to refill your oxygen. Swap between the two, as once they've deflated, they cannot be used for a little while. Stay underwater for more than a minute and you'll unlock this trophy.

  • Complete Act 3.

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

You will unlock this during the game's ending cutscenes.

  • Spread the blue fire as much as possible.

    Act II

Near the end of Act II, you will put several items into a pit in the painter's cave and create blue flame. Interacting with it will turn Teku's candle blue as well, allowing the candle to stay lit even when underwater. You must light everything possible with this blue candle:

    • Candle by the trapdoor in the cave
    • Idol on the screen with the painter
    • Candle on the screen with the mushroom picker
    • Three at the base of the giant monkey statue: the lever tops the candle in the tree stump, and the candle leading to the monkeys
    • Two at the top of the giant monkey statue: the lever top and the idol inside the giant tree
    • Two on the ground on the screen with the monkeys
    • One in the trapdoor area below the screen with the monkeys
    • Blacksmith's forge

Don't be surprised if this trophy unlocks early (it did for me, before I'd gotten to the trapdoor area beneath the monkeys screen).
