Introduction:

Beyond Blue is a pseudo-educational underwater diving/adventure game, developed and published by E-Line Media (Never Alone) and ported to the PS4 in 2020. You play as Mirai, over the course of 8 dives, where she researches a pod of sperm whales and comes to terms with her strained famlly relationships. If you like games like Afrika but with less to keep track of, this game is for you. It's pretty peaceful, with a laid-back Platinum and it has two lists: EU and NA.

Walkthrough:

Step 1: Play thorugh story mode

Just play through all 8 dives. If you want to cut down on post-game play, try to scan as much as possible during each dive but don't worry if you don't.

By the end of this step, you will have unlocked:

Step 2: Insights and Music

By progressing through the story, you will unlock short 2-5 minute video clips called Ocean Insights. Now is the time to watch all of them and fiddle with the music tablet on the submarine for two easy trophies.

By the end of this step, you will have earned:

A Little Insight trophy_bronze.png
Binge Mode trophy_gold.png
Don't Touch My Radio trophy_bronze.png

Step 3: Free Diving

Once you've cleared the game, you will unlock free diving mode.  Go back into each region and scan whatever sealife you didn't your first time through. See Scan All the Things trophy_gold.png for some tips.

31 trophies ( 20  12  )

  • Earn all other Trophies

"No water, no life.  No blue, no green" - Sylvia Earle, Oceanographer
  • Choose your own music at least once from the playlist

  • Choose your own music more than 5x in the game

In the section of the submarine just before the chair where you make phone calls is a mounted tablet. Interact with it to choose music - choose at least 6 different songs to unlock this trophy.
  • Watch an Ocean Insight video

  • Watch all of the Ocean Insight videos

Wait until after you've completed all 8 dives for this trophy, as Ocean Insights are short movies you unlock after completing dives/doing story progression. There are 16 in total, each between 2-5 minutes in length.
  • Unlock every type of jelly in the Scan Model Viewer

If you're diligent with scanning while playing through your dives, you can unlock this during the fifth dive of the game, the Brine Pool.

There are 3 types of jelly/jellyfish in the game:

    Atolla Jellyfish
    Comb Jelly
    Moon Jellyfish
  • Unlock every type of shark in the Scan Model Viewer

If you're diligent with scanning while playing through your dives, you can unlock this during the sixth dive of the game, the Vents.

There are 5 types of shark in the game:

    Scalloped Hammerhead Shark
    Sleeper Shark
    Swell Shark
    Whale Shark
    Whitetip Reef Shark
  • Unlock every type of whale in the Scan Model Viewer

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

There are three whale types in the game: sperm whale, sperm whale - juvenile and humpback whale. You will be required to scan all of them to progress through your dives. This should unlock during Dive 2 (Atoll - Sunset) when you're required to scan the juvenile sperm whale.

This will unlock en route to Scan All the Things trophy_gold.png.
  • Scan all of the octopuses in the game

There are three total octopuses in the game but you will be scanning one of twice. You will scan both species once for story reasons; the third and final scan is in the Atoll region. If you didn't chase this annoying guy down during your story dive - it's located near the middle of the screen - it's hiding in a cave. Look for the buoy/signal balloon, then swim down to the ground.  Nearby on the rock is a small cave entrance - that's where you can enter to scan the octopus.

This will unlock en route to Scan All the Things trophy_gold.png

  • Unlock the Giant Clam in the Scan Model Viewer

You can unlock this as early as the first dive (Atoll - Day) - there will be a dead sensor where you will need to swim down into a cave to get it. Before swimming down into the cave, explore the little area surrounding the cave and you'll find the clam.
  • Unlock all of the models in the Scan Model Viewer

For this trophy, you just need to scan every species in the game once. This is the first step to Scan All the Things trophy_gold.png.
  • Scan everything in the game

Whenever you scan a creature, you may notice a progress bar and a count. The count represents the total number of said creature in the game - not necessarily just in the level

About a third of the trophy list ties to this trophy, between the species-specific stuff and the "scan everything in a given dive location" trophy so this isn't as grindy as you may think. The game gives you quite a bit of help towards this trophy.  All of the dive areas are pretty small, the distance from which you can see the scanning circle is pretty generous (remember: a circle comprised of dotted lines is something you haven't scanned) and if you bring up the map, you will see gray circles that indicate a creature you haven't scanned. This will take far less time than you might think.

See each dive site's individual trophy for lists of what creatures are first seen at each site.
  • Scan everything in all dives to the Atoll Region

List of creatures in the Atoll Region (alphabetical, not in the order they are in the science log). There may be repeats from other regions but this is the first region where you will enounter the following sea life:

    Blue-Green Damselfish
    Bottlenose Dolphin
    Childean Devil Ray
    Clown Triggerfish
    Giant Clam
    Great Barracuda
    Humpback Whale
    Mailed Butterflyfish
    Northern Pacific Seastar
Octopus - this guy hides. See You Guys Made Me Ink! trophy_silver.png for directions to its location
    Quoy's Parrotfish
    Remora
    Royal Angelfish
    Soldierfish
    Sperm Whale
    Sperm Whale - Juvenile
    Splended Alfonsino
    Titan Triggerfish
    Tricolor Parrotfish
    Whale Shark
    White Spotted Pufferfish
    Whitetip Reef Shark

While there are three different dives in the Atoll Region (Day, Sunset and Night), during freeplay all of the sea life will be on the same map, so pick whichever one you want. I recommend Day or Sunset, for visability reasons.
  • Scan everything in the Open Ocean Region

List of creatures in the Open Ocean Region (alphabetical, not in the order they are in the science log). There may be repeats from other regions but this is the first region where you will enounter the following sea life:

    Leatherback Turtle
    Moon Jellyfish
    Orca
    Ocean Sunfish (Mola Mola)
    Pilotfish
    Scalloped Hammerhead Shark
    Spotted Sardinella
  • Scan everything in the Seamount Region

List of creatures in the Seamount Region (alphabetical, not in the order they are in the science log).  There may be repeats from other regions but this is the first region where you will enounter the following sea life:

    Comb Jelly
    Dana Octopus Squid
    John Dory
    Leatherback Turtle - Baby
Octopus (more likely to be the first one you scan)
    Orange Roughy
    Silver Chimaera
    Spider Crab
    Splitfin Flashlightfish
    Swell Shark

There is one Ocean Sunfish (Mola Mola) that likes to hang out outside of the boundary of the map. Swim to the boundary and keep your scanner on it; eventually it will wander in close enough that you can scan it. It took me several minutes in my game (fewer than 10) but it did happen.
  • Scan everything in the Brine Pool Region

List of creatures in the Seamount Region (alphabetical, not in the order they are in the science log). There may be repeats from other regions but this is the first region where you will enounter the following sea life:

    Atlantic Footballfish
    Atolla Jellyfish
    Barreleye Fish
    Giant Squid
    Hagfish
    Lanternfish
  • Scan everything in the Vents Region

List of creatures in the Vents Region (alphabetical, not in the order they are in the science log).  There may be repeats from other regions but this is the first region where you will enounter the following sea life:

    Seven-Armed Octopus
    Sleeper Shark

Note that during your story dive, you will have no map for this location. However, when you return during free play, you will have access to a map to help you clean up scanning the area.
  • Scan everything in the Coastal Region

List of creatures in the Coastal Region (alphabetical, not in the order they are in the science log).  There may be repeats from other regions but this is the first region where you will enounter the following sea life:

    Blackwedged Butterflyfish
  • Start your journey

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

You will unlock this on the loading screen after the game's introduction.

The final segment of Dive 2 (Atoll - Sunset) involves you recording the sound of Andrea, the juvenile sperm whale.  The trophy will unlock soon after.
  • Complete Dive 3

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

The final segment of Dive 3 (Open Ocean) involves you tagging two sperm whales then playing a sound for Andrea, the juvenile sperm whale. The trophy will unlock soon after.

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

The final segment of Dive 4 (Seamounts) involves you swimming to the bottom edge of the map to watch a cutscene of a large pod of sperm whales emerging from deeper in the ocean. The trophy will unlock soon after.
  • Complete Dive 5

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

  • Complete the game

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

You will unlock this during the game's ending credits.
  • Unlock everything for the White Tip Reef Shark

You may notice that every time you scan something, you'll see a scan count.  The game will unlock various facts / animations / etc for creatures the more you scan them. For the Whitetip Reef Shark, you will need to scan a total of 27 of them.

This will unlock en route to Scan All the Things trophy_gold.png.
  • Unlock everything for the Bottlenose Dolphin

You may notice that every time you scan something, you'll see a scan count. The game will unlock various facts and animations etc. for creatures the more you scan them. For the Bottlenose Dolphin, you will need to scan a total of 36 of them.

This will unlock en route to Scan All the Things trophy_gold.png.
  • Unlock everything for the Ocean Sunfish

You may notice that every time you scan something, you'll see a scan count. The game will unlock various facts and animations etc. for creatures the more you scan them.

For the Ocean Sunfish/Mola, you will need to scan a total of 21 of them.

There is one Ocean Sunfish in Seamount (certainly in free play; I'm not sure if its behavior is the same during the story dive) that likes to hang out outside of the boundary of the map. Swim to the boundary and keep your scanner on it; eventually it will wander in close enough that you can scan it. It took me several minutes in my game (fewer than 10) but it did happen.

This will unlock en route to Scan All the Things trophy_gold.png.
  • Complete Dive 6

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

Dive 6 (The Vents) works differently from other dives.  You have no map and no objective markers. You must do the following:

    Scan 5 hydrothermal vents (dormant)
    Scan the broken drone
    Scan 4 hydrothermal vents (active)
Scan the seven-arm octopus - At this point, you should be on a fairly linear path to lead you through the rest of the objectives
    Scan the lava (volcano rock)
    Scan the drill bit
    Scan the sediment pipe

After all this, you should soon come across another volcanic rock/lava area and an objective will pop up called Whalefall. Complete that and the dive will end. The drone marks the point where the dormant vents end and the active vents begin. Always have l1.png active so you can see scannable items near you. Since there's no map, complete one objective before moving on to the next so you don't get turned around.

You will have a map when you return to this area in free play to clean up scanning all of the creatures.
