Introduction:

Beyond a Steel Sky is a cyberpunk/sci-fi point and click adventure game developed and published in 2021 by Revolution Software (creators of the Broken Sword series). It is a direct sequel to 1994's Beneath a Steel Sky and absolutely assumes you've already played that game. This game gives you enough backstory for the first game that you won't be totally lost but you'll definitely enjoy it more if you have played the original, which is now legally free! Download it from ScummVM, GOG or Steam.

In Beyond a Steel Sky, you once again play as Robert Foster, a decade after the first game as he travels from The Gap to Union City in search of a kidnapped child - only to uncover a deeper and darker conspiracy than just kidnapping. Also note there are PS4 and PS5 stacks but no cross-save.

Walkthrough:

Step 0: Turn off the hint system

Before starting a new game, go into the settings menu and switch off the hints option. This will make it impossible to accidentally use a hint, thereby guaranteeing you a game-spanning trophy at the end of the game.


Step 1: Play through the game, watching out for missable trophies, acing the quiz with Alonso and stopping once you've explored MINOS for the first time and returned to Graham's Apartment

Play through the game. When you need to find out about Graham in order to pass an identity quiz, make sure you find out everything that will be on the quiz - the game will prompt you that you've found enough or you can check Interview Jeopardy trophy_bronze.png. There is one game-spanning trophy you need to worry about, which involves finding five movie posters - you will find four of the five during this step.  Once you return to Graham's Apartment after meeting Leet and exploring MINOS, you will be at a diversion point in the game.

Step 2: Make a separate manual save but don't overwrite it

Just make a manual save but make sure you do not overwrite it (you have plenty of save slots to use).  We will be using this save file later.


Step 3: Finish the game, watching out for missable trophies, having given Graham's photo and Bartleby the plushy to Songbird prior to getting a gala invitation

When you return to Graham's Apartment after exploring MINOS for the first time, you will decode a message (Crystal Clear trophy_bronze.png).  After that, locate Songbird and give her the photograph of Graham and the Bartleby plushy you've been carrying around.  Then finish the game - you will have watched one of Songbird's two endings due to your actions, as well as picked up the final movie poster collectible.

Step 4: Reload the save, ignoring Songbird (do not give her the photo and plushy) and playing through until after you've dealt with Alonso at the City Walls

You will be replaying most of the back half of the game in order to watch Songbird's other ending.  Other than not giving her the items you gave her before, nothing else needs to be done differently so this should go more quickly, especially because you don't have to worry about other missable trophies.

By the end of this step, you will have earned:

  • Brain The Size Of A Planet

     

    Complete the game without using any hints

    Before starting a new game, go to the Options menu and switch off the hints option, then you won't have to worry about this trophy. Otherwise, just ignore the "hints" tab on the pause menu, then you will unlock this trophy when the credits start rolling.

  • The Zen Of Screaming

     

    Set the Kids' Exhibit to speak 'Aggressively'

    MISSABLE

    In the museum, find the kid's exhibit (it's a bear).  Wait for the cleaning robot to make its way over to the bathrooms/water refill station, then you will be able to hack both it and the kid's exhibit. Swap the "excitedly" and "aggressively" traits, then use the kid's exhibit.

  • Hunger Games

     

    Feed Voxel a stolen sandwich

    MISSABLE

    At the City Walls, you will eventually gain access to the small booth where you got your hand chipped.  Inside is a scanner and a poster but also a sandwich. Take this sandwich over to Voxel's hideout and talk to him. Give Voxel the sandwich and the trophy will unlock.

  • Wash Pin Bowling

     

    Knock Chipworth over

    MISSABLE

    On the bottom floor of Graham's apartment building is a laundry area. Wait for the cleaning robot to access the water refill station so you can hack both it and the laundry machines. Swap the 0% and the 100%, so that both values on the laundry machine are 100%. Next, go upstairs and talk to Chipworth. Select (butler duties/laundry) x2, then follow him and watch him do the laundry. This trophy will unlock after Chipworth is knocked over and gets back up.

  • Water The Plants

     

    Turn the sprinklers on

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

    You will unlock this while rescuing the woman from the roof of Graham's apartment building

  • History Lesson

     

    Learn the full story of Joey the Savior

    MISSABLE

    In the center of the museum, where Joey's arm is, are five kiosks. Press all 5 buttons, then the trophy will pop.

  • A Fishy Tail

     

    Porpoisefully fail Jimmy's scary moment

    MISSABLE

    At the Recycling Center, after getting Jimmy his moonshine, Foster will be instructed to put his hand down on a plate. After doing so, you will enter a short action sequence. Pick up the nearby fish to unlock this trophy.

  • Poetry Slam

     

    Watch a full poetry recital

    MISSABLE

    For story reasons, you will find yourself walking the catwalks above the aspiration day gala. Midway through, Foster will stop and wonder if he should watch the recital or continue on. Choose to watch the recital for this trophy.

  • Cleanliness Is Next To Joeyness

     

    Clean everything up, ready for the party

    MISSABLE

    At your first visit with Joey to Aspiration Platform, a robot will complain that the area around the tree is dirty. There are 5 piles of rubbish - instruct Joey to clean them all up for this trophy.

  • Classic Threads

     

    Unlock Foster's classic coat

    MISSABLE

    In MINOS, you will come across a giant safe you cannot open. Not too far away is a program that can be downloaded that looks like a magnifying glass. Take this program back to the large safe and use it to open the safe. Doing so will get you a file called core.log. Once you take care of the firewall and enter deeper into MINOS, you will find a dome with a wheel and a cursor.  Go up to the cursor and use core.log on it for this trophy.

  • Rational Or Just Crazy?

     

    Examine all of Graham's conspiracy posters

    MISSABLE

    In Graham's apartment, there is a room with a bunch of posters in it - 5 in total (there is also a movie poster that's needed for Movie Buff trophy_gold.png). Look at all five posters for this trophy.

  • Two Faced

     

    Witness both Songbird's endings

    MISSABLE

    If you know about this trophy going in, you can get the Platinum in 1.5 playthroughs instead of 2 full ones.

    The first step of this trophy involves the quiz with Alonso (Interview Jeopardy trophy_bronze.png).  Make sure you get all the questions correct - see that trophy for the answers.

    The second step (and where you want to make a separate save before making decisions) happens after returning from meeting Leet and entering MINOS for the first time. You will be in possession of both a photograph and a plushy.  Assuming you aced the quiz with Alonso, then the two Songbird endings come down to whether you give her these two items or not.

    Whatever you choose for your first playthrough, finish the game. Once you've finished it, reload the save I told you to make, then choose the opposite action. You should notice that Songbird's conversation with you at the monopod is different than the first time around. Play through the game until you deal with her and Alonso at the City Walls, then this trophy will unlock.

  • Ultimate Collector

     

    Transfer all the holo-trinkets to your brooch

    MISSABLE

    Outside of the musuem is a booth where you can change the picture on your aspiration day brooch.  Put the brooch in the brooch slot and change its image - there are three in total.  Once you've worn all three, you'll unlock this trophy.

  • Movie Buff

     

    Discover all five movie posters

    Scattered throughout the game are 5 movie posters that are parodies of sci-fi movies (one is actually just a poster for one of Revolution Software's earlier games). Here are their locations in the order they are obtained:

    1) City Walls - in the room where you get the scanner tool and the sandwich - above the door
    2) Graham's Apartment - in the room with all the posters - on the back of the door
    3) Museum - old history exhibit - on the side of the Smeg fridge
    4) Recycling Center - on the walkways connecting the recycling area and the furnace area - walk under the stairs that lead to the roof to find this on the wall
    5) Citadel - Overmann chair room - under a desk that has an old computer monitor on it
 

Secret trophies

  • Infiltrator

     

    Enter the main gates

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

    You will unlock this when you fix Wendell's truck and are driven into the city

  • Interview Jeopardy

     

    Complete the Alonso interview

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

    You will unlock this when you finish the interview with Alonso, no matter how you do. However, in order to make Two Faced trophy_silver.png as simple as possible and minimize replays, you will want to get every one of his questions correct. I'm just going to post the relevant part of my walkthrough so you'll have all the information you need:

    (starting in the room with all the posters in it)
    Look at photos hanging over the mattress
    Use MINOS terminal
    Click the “view QDOS history” button
    Click Civic Guide – click all five buttons, then back out
    Click City Live – scroll down the entire screen, then back out
    Exit MINOS
    Look at the movie poster on the exit door (if you accidentally open the door, just wait for it to close again) (2/5)
    Exit the posters room, turn left, then enter the bathroom
    Use the medical scanner, then exit when you can.
    Look at the employee of the month poster above the toilet
    Exit the bathroom and into the main room
    Enter the bedroom (right of the fireplace). You will still be given the option to look around if you want to keep poking around.

  • Reunited With An Old Friend

     

    Liberate Joey from the Museum of New History

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

    You will unlock this after breaking out of the old history exhibit in a barrel, then leaving the actual museum and going back to the piazza.

  • Lax Safety

     

    Obtain a waiver from Orana

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

    You will unlock this when you knock the bunting down from the tree at the aspiration plaza, having Joey clean it up and then talking to Orana.

  • Knockout

     

    Neutralize Jimmy

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

    At the Recycling Center, after getting Jimmy his moonshine, Foster will be instructed to put his hand down on a plate. After doing so, you will enter a short action sequence. Pick up the nearby bottle to unlock this trophy.

  • The Man Behind The Iron Furnace

     

    Enter the secret room behind the fire

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

    You will unlock this after speaking with Leet in his room above the furnace.

  • 8bit Days

     

    Complete LINCspace

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

    You will unlock this when you deal with the firewall in MINOS and move deeper into the program.

  • Crystal Clear

     

    Read the secret message

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

    You will unlock this when you decrypt the message in Graham's Apartment (Hint: Check Graham's emails, remember that he likes hologram bonsai trees, then you have a crystal in your inventory)

  • Party Party

     

    Earn a party invite

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

    You will unlock this when you steal a poem from the VIP customer at the cafe and bring it to the dapper robot hanging out outside of Graham's apartment.

  • Hidden Trouble

     

    Got caught spying

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

    You will unlock this when meeting back up with Orana after following her and her friend at the gala.

  • Joey Time

     

    Free Foster

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

    You will unlock this when you regain control of Foster after a short section playing as Joey.

  • Freedom!

     

    Orana can free the children

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

    You will unlock this after several cutscenes when you leave the Freedom Spa area.

  • Equality For All

     

    Set everyone's Qdos level to infinity

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

    You will unlock this when you set the QDOS levels for ALL CITIZENS to (division sign) 0.

  • Time To Get Outta Here

     

    Open the main gates to allow Wendell to leave with the kids

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

    You will unlock this after hacking a toaster to be able to open the city gates.

  • A Meeting Of Minds

     

    Confront the Council in the Citadel

    You will unlock this after hacking some large guns to take care of some androds attacking Foster at the Citadel.
