Introduction:

Originally released in 2001 for arcades running on the Neo-Geo hardware by SNK, The King of Fighters 2001 is the eighth (although seventh canonical) installment in SNK's long running series of the same name, and the conclusion of the NESTS Saga that started in The King of Fighters '99. This is also the final installment of the series to be published by the original SNK due to the company filing for bankruptcy weeks before the game's release, with development being concluded by Breezasoft and Korean developer Eolith.

This installment of the series will now allow players to set how many characters they want to play with in their team, with the ability to have up to three strikers depending on how many characters you wish to play with for that match. Additionally, this game also marks the debut of some new characters, including Angel, May Lee, and the controversial K9999. Additionally, as the game was outsourced to Eolith following SNK's bankruptcy, all four members of the Korea Team will now speak their native tongue when you set the game language to Korean.

Walkthrough:

Step 1: Play through Original mode

In this step, you will need to play through the game's original arcade mode as you rack up a score of at least 500,000 points in total in addition to registering your highest score in the online rankings and beating the high score of the game, if you are having trouble, you can change the difficulty to "1" to make it easier. The Battle Ability point system from the previous two entries in the series has been removed in this game, instead reverting back to the original points system used in previous KOF games prior to '99.

Score 100,000 points
Score 300,000 points
Score 500,000 points

Step 2: Reach a score of at least 50,000 or more in Hi Score mode

This step will have you head on over to the Hi Score mode and fight your way through various AI opponents as you aim for a score of at least 50,000 points or more in this mode in order to complete this task. Additionally, you can also unlock the score X trophies in this mode if you haven't already unlocked any of them in original mode already. You will now have the following trophy unlocked once this step is completed.

6 trophies ( 1  )

  • The score has been posted to the online rankings.

You will unlock this trophy upon submitting your score to the online rankings in Original mode. Keep in mind that whether you choose to beat the game in its entirety, or if you choose to not continue should not matter at all as long as the score is submitted to the rankings.

You should also take precaution when submitting your score by waiting for the window to pop up asking if you want it to be submitted, which in this case, you should press (or if you are playing an Asian/Japanese version of the game) to do so.

  • High score has been updated.

This trophy will be unlocked upon scoring at least 40,000 points or more in the game. You can go for this when going for either the "Record score" and/or the "Score 500,000 points" trophies in Original mode, or the "HI SCORE Player" trophy in Hi Score mode; the mode you choose to do it in does not matter at all.

  • The score won 100,000 points

See Score 500,000 points for more information.

  • The score won 300,000 points

See Score 500,000 points for more information.

  • The score won 500,000 points

In order to unlock this, and the other trophies above it, you will need to score a total of 500,000 points in either original or hi score mode.

In contrast to the previous two installments (The King of Fighters '99 and 2000), KOF 2001 drops the battle ability points system and reverts it back to the series' classic scoring system that was last used in KOF '98. As stated in the roadmap, I highly recommend doing this in original mode due to the fact that you will be able to change the game's difficulty to make it easier, and much like previous games, your score will be added at the results screen in the end of each match based on the following four factors:

    • Time
    • Life
    • Perfect
    • Straight

I highly recommend creating interrupt saves before the start of each match and after completing each round of any match, especially when you are trying to go for as many perfects as you can to rack up points towards these trophies. Whichever character(s) you want to use should not matter, but I recommend that you should select the ones you know best.

  • The score has been posted to the online rankings in the "HI SCORE MODE".

In order to unlock this trophy, you will need to post a score to the online rankings in Hi Score mode for the first time. The score I will recommend going for when doing this is at least 50,000 points or more, and as with original mode, I recommend using the team and/or character(s) you are more comfortable playing with until you reach the points needed to submit your score.

Much like in previous games in the Arcade Archives library, Hi Score mode limits you to the game's default settings in the arcade version, which means that you cannot change the difficulty to make this easier, and if you press the while playing in this mode, you cannot back out of the pause menu unless you retry or exit Hi Score mode.

As with original mode, you should also be careful when submitting it in this mode too, as you might accidentally prevent yourself from doing so by pressing (or if you are playing an Asian/Japanese version of the game), so be sure to wait until the screen shows up and press (or if you are playing either the Japanese or Asian versions) to submit it.
