Introduction:

AO Tennis is the official licensed game of the Australian Open tennis tournament, developed by Big Ant Studios and released in January of 2018 in Australia with a worldwide release in May of the same year. This is the first serious tennis game released on the PS4, and as the name suggests, focuses on the Australian Open. The game offers a few different game modes and courts with most of the trophies coming from either standard gameplay and performing certain tennis shots or for winning the Open final with different players. While trophies can be earned online if you want, there are no online-specific trophies. See here for the boosting thread: LINK

IMPORTANT NOTE: This game has had many updates and patches since its original release which have improved the game greatly by adding more game modes, more options and removing many bugs. These updates have, however, increased the requirements for a few trophies as well as removed many of the workarounds and "friendly bugs" that made getting some of the trophies easier. If you are playing a digital version of the game, more than likely, you will be receiving the game with all updates already installed, as well the world wide retail disc version comes updated to version 1.17 as standard. If you are lucky to have an original Australian release retail disc version, then this is the only version that can be played unpatched. This guide was originally created using the completely unpatched version of the game.I have updated the guide to include information for those playing on a patched version of the game but please keep in mind, that the patched version of the game, while a much more polished and all round better game, is harder and a lot more grindy.

**Important Note About Update 1.01 and beyond**

A few days after the game's release, a series of updates were made available. These updates greatly improved the gameplay, removing a lot of bugs and glitches as well as adding 2 more stadiums and a career mode but these updates also increased the requirements for Aces High, Backbreaker, Forehanded Compliment and Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner. It is recommended that you unlock these trophies before downloading any updates for the game. Doing so will reduce the time and grinding to unlock them. More information on this under the specific trophy descriptions.

**Note About Update 1.09 and Beyond**

As of update 1.09 the ability to play 2 player matches during Australian Open mode has been disabled, meaning you will no longer be able to boost during the Australian Open. Playing AO matches for the related trophies will have to be done legit which isn't an overly difficult task just might take a little bit longer. Boosting during casual matches for all other trophies is still available.

Walkthrough:

Step 1: Complete Tutorials Then Create a Player in The Academy and Play 10 Casual Matches

First off, update 1.15 added tutorials to the game, you want to play through and complete all tutorial challenges. Next you need to play 10 casual matches with no updates or patches installed. Create your own player in The Academy and give your player max stats; doing so will make later play a little easier. With your newly-created player, play 10 casual matches against any opponent of your choosing. With the reduced requirements of the stat related trophies in the pre-patched game, 10 matches is enough to get the vast majority of trophies in the game done.

While playing these matches, keep in mind that it is possible to boost with a second controller, meaning you can play the game against yourself by adding another controller and using a second profile on your PS4. This makes most of the requirements a breeze.

Completing this step, will earn you the following trophies:

Aces
Creationist
Denied!
Dropsy
Fetch
Happy Returns
King of Spin
Lobster
Max Power
Point Break
TENnis
You Cannot Be Serious!!!
Aces High
Backbreaker
Bagelled
Forehanded Compliment
Many Happy Returns
Run Around
Stayin' Afive
Tie Fighter
Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner
Comeback Kid
Rallying
Room Service
Certificate Of Excellence - DLC trophy.

Step 2: Play Through The Australian Open 4 Times.

After you have completed Step 1, you will need to download and install the updates as there has been issues with the trophies not unlocking and the game crashing at the end of the Australian Open tournament in the unpatched game. Before installing any updates, make sure you have unlocked Aces High, Backbreaker, Forehanded Compliment and Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner, as all these have had their requirements increased in the updates. After installing any patches that are available, you will notice a difference in the game, cosmetic changes in the menus, an added career mode and the biggest change being improved handling and shot ability of your player.

You are now ready to start the Australian Open playthroughs: 4 in total. You must use your own custom player, Rafael Nadal, Angelique Kerber and any combination of 2 players in doubles or mixed doubles. Each run will require you to win 7 matches to win the Open so 28 matches in total across your 4 playthroughs This at first may seem like a bit of a grind but you are able to set the matches to only 1 set and to Rookie difficulty As of patch 1.09 playing AO matches as multiplayer has been disabled so you won't be able to boost these. A simulate match option is available but doing so will disable trophies.

Completing this step, will earn you the following trophies:

At The Double
Kerb Stomped
Raffle
Who on earth is...?
Clear Run
Grand Slammed

31 trophies ( 12  13  )

  • Collect all Trophies.

Unlock all the non-DLC trophies to earn this Platinum.

  • Aces

Win a point with an ace.

An ace is when you serve the ball and your opponent doesn't hit it back, meaning you win the point. All you have to do is get your first ace and this trophy is yours. If you are boosting, you need to make sure when you serve the ball doesn't actually hit the other player; if it does, it wont count as an ace. This is something to note while going for Fetch and Aces High.

  • Create a player in the Academy.

The academy is where you can create your own custom player with options like clothing, hair style, facial features and all the usual create a player options. Create your first player, save and exit and the trophy is yours.

  • Lose a challenged decision.

When a ball is hit and declared "out" the decision can be challenged by holding down and at the same time. The first time you challenge and the decision is upheld (meaning you lose the challenge), the trophy will pop.

You will be making a lot of challenges for You Cannot Be Serious!!! so this will come naturally. If you are playing the game unpatched the line call decisions are terrible, so there will be plenty of opportunities to challenge (this is something they fixed in the patch).

  • Win a point with a drop shot.

A drop shot is where you hit the ball causing it to fall just over the net, winning the point if your opponent can't get to it in time to hit it back. In game this is done by holding and pressing when you want to hit the ball. If you are boosting, this is easily done. If playing legit, simply make every shot you play a drop shot until you finally win a point with one. Doing it on your opponents serve is best.

  • Win a game by only hitting Aces.

For this you need to serve 4 aces and win the point. If you are boosting with a second controller this won't be a problem; just remember the ball can't hit the other player, as if it does it won't count as an ace.

If playing legit, it is easier to try this after installing the update patches. Try moving to the far left when serving from the left side and moving to the far right when serving from the right side, from these positions serve the ball aiming for the opposite side of the court, so push when on the left side and when on the right side while serving. This won't work for all opponents, but when you find a sucker for it make the most of it.

Below is a video I made using this method.

  • Hit a return winner against your opponent's serve.

A return winner is when your opponent serves to you and you hit it back and they miss, meaning you win the point. As with most of these type of trophies, they are easily done via boosting; just get your second controller to serve to you, then hit it back. If playing legit, try lowering the difficulty and always be hitting the ball back to the opposite side of the court from where they served to you from.

  • Win a point with a top spin shot.

Top spin shots are done with ; win a point with a top spin shot and this is yours.

  • Win a point with a lob shot.

Lob shots are done with ; win your first point with a lob shot and this trophy will unlock.

  • Have a serve reach over 200 km/h.

The best player for this is either Rafael Nadal or your own custom player if you maxed out their stats. The easiest method for serving is using the right thumbstick. Flick it down to serve and then push up again when the curved bar above your head is nearly full. A good serve with Nadal or your maxed custom player will go over 200km/h.

  • Win a game on your opponent's serve.

Self-explanatory. When your opponent is serving, win the game and this trophy is yours.

  • Play 10 Casual Matches.

Casual matches are quick-play style matches where you can choose your player and your opponent, the court you will play on, difficulty and match type and go straight into a one-off match.

You also have the option of adding additional controllers for 2, 3 or 4 local multiplayer. To add additional controllers, while on the user selection screen after you select your player, press on the second controller and then select another user profile on your PS4. You now have a second player you can play against and self boost, making many of the trophies in this game even easier.

Play 10 casual matches to unlock this trophy. To keep track of your progress you can find user statistics under the setting option on the main menu. The pre-patched game has a helpful glitch in the casual game counter: for every casual game you win, it counts two as being played. So it is possible to get this after playing only five casual matches so long as you win all of them (this has been patched out in later version of the game).

  • Overturn a line judge's decision with a challenge.

This is similar to Denied! except this time you need to challenge a line decision and win, meaning the decision gets reversed.

If playing the game pre-patched, then you will notice the line decisions are terrible, with a lot of incorrect calls. You get 3 challenges per set; it's best to save your challenges for the side lines rather than the base line as it is easier to tell if the call was incorrect with the side lines. Keep challenging every close call you can and in no time you will get one that goes your way.

As of version 1.19 the line call decisions by the line judge AI have become a lot tighter, meaning they are pretty accurate, which is very frustrating if you are going for this trophy. Best thing is too keep hitting shots to the sides and remember you can challenge shots called out and in, both your shots and your opponent.

  • Hit 1000 aces in any singles game mode.

This trophy is the main reason you will want to play the game without installing patches. Pre-patch, the requirement for this trophy is only 100 Aces.

This is best done boosting with a second controller; you can track your progress by selection settings from the main menu, then select user statistics. See Aces for a description of what an ace is.

  • Win the Australian Open Doubles final.

For this trophy, you must have played every game from round 1 to the final with the eventual winners. Pick a doubles pairing you want to play as and stick with them through all rounds until you win the final. You can simulate all other matches, so long you actually play the games for your players - if you simulate games that your players will play, you will not unlock this trophy.

Take note of the save feature: every time you exit out of the current Open you are playing it saves and can be continued later on by selecting Continue or Load from the Australian Open menu. If you do happen to lose a match on the way to the final, exit out of the game completely by pressing and close the game app. Start the game back up and continue your game from just before you lost the match. To make good use of this, you should save your game before each match.

  • Hit 1000 Backhand winners in any singles game mode.

This is another trophy that has had the requirements increased with patches; originally this was only 100 backhand winners. Without getting too technical about tennis strokes, the difference between forehand and backhand with your player in this game will be the side of your body you hit the ball on. Evenly play left side and right side shots, as Forehanded Compliment will require you to do forehand shots. For the shots to count they must win the point; simply doing a backhand shot that your opponent hits back to you doesn't count.

  • Win a set 6-0.

Set up a casual game on Rookie difficulty and make sure you play as a high rated player (your fully maxed custom player for example) then select a lower rating opponent on casual match.

  • Hit 1000 Forehand winners in any singles game mode.

Similar to Backbreaker except this requires you to play forehand winning shots. Again, the requirements for this were increased to 1000 with a patch; playing pre-patch will mean you only need 100.

  • Win the Australian Open with Angelique Kerber.

For this trophy you must play every game leading up to, then win the final with Angelique Kerber. Simulate game option is available as you play through the Open, however you must physically play all of Kerber's matches; simulating any of her matches will disable this trophy. You are able to simulate all other matches - there will be a warning notice saying simulating will disable trophies but so long as you play Kerber's matches you are fine.

As with At The Double, make use of the save game feature, set difficulty to rookie and limit matches to 1 set in match settings, before each match. As of Patch 1.09, playing 2 player with a second controller has been disabled. This means you will not be able to boost but with the previously mentioned settings it will still be a breeze, just take a little longer.

  • Hit 50 return winnners against your opponents serve.

As you did with Happy Returns, just 49 more times.

  • Win the Australian Open with Rafael Nadal.

See Kerb Stomped, except this time use Rafael Nadal.

  • Make your opponent run 100 metres during a point.

The best strategy for this is to play against the AI at Rookie or Amateur difficulty. Get yourself into a position where you are in the middle of the court and can hit it to the left or right to make your opponent run to get it. When they hit it back to you, hit it to the other side of the court, not too far as you actually want then to be able to get it. You also don't want to be hitting the ball too hard, you actually want to be hitting the ball with bad timing, remember you don't actually want to beat your opponent when going for this, just make them run to get the ball.

This might take some practice and a few attempts but you will get it eventually. I found a really good opponent for this was Bruce Jones; he seemed to have just the right amount of speed to make this work regularly against him.

You won't know the distance you have made your opponent run until just before the serve for the next point when a pop up stat will show the metres run for each player during the last point.

Below is a video I made showing this method:

  • Win 5 consecutive Matches.

This is pretty self explanatory - win 5 matches in a row. This can be casual, Open or online matches, either playing solo or with a second controller.

  • Win a match via a tie break.

When setting up a casual match, just after you select your player you will be on the match settings screen. Look for match type and scroll sideways to select "singles tie-break (7P)". This will set up a tie-break match but you will only have to play the tie-break and not the full match so it's just first to 7 points. Win this and the trophy will unlock.

  • Win the Australian Open with a custom created player.

The same as Kerb Stomped, except this time use you custom player you made for Creationist.

  • Win the Australian Open without dropping a set for the tournament.

For this trophy, you must win each set in every match from round 1 to the final while playing through the Australian Open. This will be easily done if you are setting your matches to 1 set and rookie difficulty, also make use of the save game feature as explained under At The Double.

This can be done on any of your Open runs for Kerb Stomped, Who on earth is...?, At The Double or Raffle.

  • Hit 5000 winners in all singles game modes.

This is the last of the trophies that had its' requirements increased with the patch. By playing the game unpatched, you only need 250 winners - namely, shots that win a point for you or serves that the opponent returns but doesn't actually clear the net. Do this in casual mode, boosting with a second controller before downloading the patch update.

If you are playing the updated patched version of the game, then this is going to be a grind. Many people have said this takes any fun out of the game. The only thing I can suggest, is to explore the many downloadable stadiums and players created by other users in the academy to break up the grind.

  • Win a five set match after being two sets down.

The best way to do this is to set up a casual 5 set match with you playing as your fully maxed out custom player against a lower ranked player. Deliberately lose the first 2 sets, then start playing and make sure you win the last 3 sets.

  • Have a 72 shot rally in a single point.

This is very difficult to do against the AI, as the required rally is so long that eventually a lower difficulty AI setting will make a mistake or a higher AI setting will beat you.

If playing the game unpatched, this can be done by one person with a second controller by setting up the players in the middle of the court and lobbing the ball back and forth using . The height of a lob shot makes the players move back by themselves, meaning you don't have to do much positioning yourself while using 2 controllers at once. Using any another shot makes the players creep forward and eventually they will hit the ball into the net. Try to time the pressing of the button for your shots just before the ball lands; this helps to get the most/best height. Try to keep count of the shots as you go, as there is no in game counter for this. Chances are you will also get Run Around if you haven't already, as the small movements all add up and count towards this.

If playing the updated patched version of the game then you may need a boosting partner, whether it be online or local.

Here is a video I made showing this method:

  • Get 100% of first serves in for a set.

This is basically done by not serving a fault (i.e. missing a serve or clipping the net with a serve) for an entire set, something that might come through natural gameplay. You don't have to win the set, just don't serve any faults. If you are struggling with this, just serve by pressing button once to serve and nothing else. By doing this your player will go through the serving motions by itself and you are guaranteed a serve that will be in.

  • Successfully complete all tutorials (excludes Free Serve).

Update 1.15 added a tutorial mode to the game, this can be accessed from the main menu. The tutorial will run you through all the different shots available including serving as well as how to challenge a line decision. Start with the first tutorial (flat shots) and when completed select "next tutorial" to cycle through all tutorials and earn this trophy. This update also added the ability to select the landing place of your shots using the . Use this when doing the tutorials that require you to land the ball in certain spots.
