Introduction

Originally released by SNK in 1996, Metal Slug is a fantastic run and gun game with bucket loads of personality and style. As one of the 2 main characters you’ll traverse 6 action-packed stages destroying everything that moves in a mission to defeat the rebel army lead by the power-hungry General Morden. The game is lots of fun and the path to 100% is relatively easy.

Walkthrough

Step 1: Play through HI SCORE mode

This step will most likely be the hardest, especially for newcomers to the game, but the high score requirement is pretty low. You should be able to upload a new high score after passing 107,400 points.

After this step you will have acquired:

Score 100,000 points
Mark high score
HI SCORE Player

Step 2: Play through Original Mode

Here’s where you will obtain the rest of the available trophies, which is made ridiculously easy thanks to being able to set your amount of lives to 99 in the options menu. During this step you’ll need to aim for a score of 300,000 points, and then make sure to either get a game over or reach the end of the game so that you can upload your score to the leaderboards.

After this step will have obtained the following trophies:

Score 200,000 points
Score 300,000 points
Record score

  • The score has been posted to the online rankings.

You’ll get this trophy during your original mode playthrough, since you’ll be going for 300,000 points and will easily be eligible to upload a high score. To upload your score, beat the game or get a game over with a high enough score and a notification box will pop up asking if you would like to upload your record. Simply press and the trophy will pop after a few seconds.

  • High score has been updated.

You’ll be able to get this while going for the HI SCORE Player trophy. It will unlock either with a game over or upon completing the game.

  • The score won 200,000 points

    See Score 300,0000 points

  • The score won 300,000 points

This trophy is made really easy thanks to the ability the set your stock of lives to 99. To do this, enter either of the original modes and before you start playing, bring up the options menu by pressing and then select Game Settings. You can increase the amount of lives to however many you feel comfortable with. You can also decrease the difficulty of the game by lowering the current level. Once you’re happy with your settings, press twice to return to the game and when the notification pops up to confirm your selection press .

Now with all the lives you need getting the required scores will be a breeze. However, there are some things to keep in mind to increase your score.

Rescue as many POWs (the guys with beards) as possible, as not only will they supply you with either an item or weapon upon rescue, but you will also receive 1000 bonus points at the end of the stage for every one that you save.

The Tank (aka the Metal Slug) you find during each level will give you a huge point boost of 10,000 if you reach the end of a stage with it still intact. This is easiest to do on the first level as there aren’t too many enemies or hazards to worry about. Unfortunately, controlling the tank can feel awkward and clunky at times. However, there is a neat trick you can take advantage of to keep it in one piece. While in a tank you, can press down and jump at the same time to quickly jump out. If you do this just before you take damage, you’ll escape unharmed. You can use this every time you think the tank is about to be hit, hopefully allowing you to reach the end of the stage with it still in one piece.

Oh, and whatever you do, don't press and at the same time as this will make your tank self destruct.

  • The score has been posted to the online rankings in the "HI SCORE MODE".

HI SCORE Mode has you play the game with limited lives on the default difficulty. This may sound like it would make getting the trophy hard but thanks to the relatively low high score of 107400 points it shouldn’t be too hard if you manage to reach the end of the first stage with your tank intact.

Have a look at the video for a demonstration on how to play through the first level.
