A Way Out is a co-op action/adventure game from the creators of Brothers – A Tale of Two Sons (Hazelight Studios) but published by Electronic Arts under their EA Originals program to support indie games. If you're playing this game online, then you will need to be a member and so does your online co-op partner. It is also worth mentioning that only the host or owner of the game will earn trophies unless both players own a copy of the game.

As for the story, you'll follow both Vincent Moretti and Leo Caruso as they work together to escape prison and seek vengeance against their sworn enemy, Harvey.

Trophy-wise, the game consists of 15 trophies, and it is possible to obtain the Platinum Trophy without even finishing the game. None of the trophies are story-related, and are all miscellaneous. Chapter Select is available once you reached a chapter's section for the first time. There is a total of 5 different chapters, but only the first 4 chapters have trophies. Using Chapter Select to cleanup any missed trophies can take you about 30 minutes to 1 hour to obtain anything you're missing. If you played the game normally and obtained all the trophies along the way, you'll obtain the Platinum in anywhere from 3-10 hours.

Everything below this section will contain spoilers of the events throughout the first 4 chapters.

Controls:

  • - Focus / Aim
  • - Hold / Shoot
  • - Move / Sprint
  • - Camera
  • - Interact
  • - Dialogue
  • - Cancel
  • - Jump
  • - Pause / Options

Step 0: Play and enjoy the game without a Trophy Guide.

Simply play and enjoy the game. You can easily miss some trophies, but you can use Chapter Select to go back and obtain them. Clean up with the Trophy Guide will only take you and your partner about 30 minutes to 1 hour to achieve all 15 trophies. This is totally optional and up to you and your co-op partner how you want to go about achieving the Platinum Trophy.

Step 1: Play and complete the game while obtaining all Miscellaneous trophies.

This step is for anyone who wants to achieve all the trophies in a single playthrough without having to go back and clean up any trophies. None of these trophies will unlock naturally for you. The game is very linear with its storytelling and choice making.

Note that some trophies can only be unlocked by certain characters, but both players will still earn the trophy.

Since all the trophies are miscellaneous, I highly recommend that you follow this trophy unlock flowchart:

  • Chapter 1: Escape - The Yard
    • The Dip - Leo Caruso is the only one who can do this trophy.
  • Chapter 1: Escape - Prison Escape
    • Freedom
  • Chapter 2: Fugitives - Breather
    • Take A Breather
  • Chapter 2: Fugitives - Farmstead
    • Take It For A Spin
    • In Sync
    • Timeless Treasure
  • Chapter 3: Preparation - Reunion
    • No Cheating
    • You Started It
    • Home Run
    • Backseat Mechanic - Vincent Moretti is the only one who can do this trophy.
  • Chapter 3: Preparation - Violent Questioning
    • Managed Anger - Leo Caruso is the only one who can do this trophy.
  • Chapter 3: Preparation - A New Life
    • Live The Dream
  • Chapter 4: Vengeance - Lift Off
    • Break From Reality
    • Mayday! - Leo Caruso is the only one who can do this trophy.
    • All The Ways Out

Step 2: Cleanup.

This is an optional step and may not be needed. If you're missing any trophies, then now is the time to clean them up. You can use the Chapter Select feature to easily go to the chapter section that you need for the trophy.

  • Collect all trophies

The only way out is to collect all other trophies to unlock this trophy. Congratulations!

  • You freed someone from captivity.

Chapter Select: Escape - Prison Escape
Trophy unlocks for both players? Yes

This trophy is a reference to Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. During the prison escape, you'll both break through a double door using the thunder's sound to cover up the noise it'll make. After you've both busted through the doors, you'll find yourself outside on the rooftops. This is the same rooftops from Escape - Work Detail, where Leo had to go and get the chisel he dropped through a window earlier.

Now that you're on the rooftops, take out any of the guards that get in your way. Make your way to the same area that you got the chisel and work together to climb the platform. When at the top, break the window open to enter the Warden's Office. Inside the Warden's Office, exit to the balcony and you'll find a birdcage with a bird inside it. Free this bird from the cage and the trophy will unlock.

If you've gone through the double door on the balcony, then you've gone too far and will need to use Chapter Select.

  • You exposed some infidelity.

    Chapter Select: Preparation - Reunion
Trophy unlocks for both players? Yes

After fleeing from the police, you'll be in the Reunion section of this chapter where you'll be tasked with the following objective:

    • Find Leo's family (Vincent) | Find your family (Leo)

Ignore the above objective and do the all the trophy requirements around this trailer park before searching for Leo's family.

For this trophy, look for a lady (Martha) on the left of the trailer park who's sitting in a chair, holding a baseball bat. Talk to the lady with to find out that she is upset about her husband and is going to beat his ass for cheating on her. The only problem is that she doesn't know where he's at and ask if you've seen him. Select any choice as a reply to her question and then go search for her cheating husband.

He can be found in the next trailer on the right side of the area (you'll know it the right one because of the sex sound effects behind the door). Go to it and have the player who talked to the upset woman knock on the trailer door. You will meet the cheating husband, Cletus. Now return to the lady and tell her where her husband is to unlock the trophy.

Please see both the You Started It and Home Run trophies before you proceed with the current story objective.

If you've pushed the dumpster to trigger a cutscene with Leo's family, then you've gone too far and will need to use Chapter Select.

  • You played a videogame with a friend.

Chapter Select: Vengeance - Lift Off
Trophy unlocks for both players? Yes

At the very start of the chapter, you'll be in the Lift Off section and will need to make a choice of either Vincent’s way to parachute or Leo's way to land the plane. Either choice is fine. Your new objectives will be the following:

    • Turn off fuel flow
    • Get Emily's logbook
    • Open hanger doors

Ignore the above objectives and do the all the trophy requirements around the hanger before proceeding with the story.

For the trophy, look for a yellow arcade machine against the wall of the room you started in. Simply have both players interact with the arcade machine called Grenade Brothers and the trophy will unlock instantly. You don't have to play this arcade machine at all and can simply press to exit it. Please see the Mayday! trophy next before you proceed with the current story objective.

If you opened the hanger doors and then get on the plane so you can take-off, then you've gone too far and will need to use Chapter Select.

  • You almost took to the skies.

Note: Leo Caruso is the only one who can do this trophy

Chapter Select: Vengeance - Lift Off
Trophy unlocks for both players? Yes

At the very start of the chapter, you'll be in the Lift Off section and will need to make a choice of either Vincent’s way to parachute or Leo's way to land the plane. Either choice is fine. Your new objectives will be the following:

    • Turn off fuel flow
    • Get Emily's logbook
    • Open hanger doors

Ignore the above objectives and do the all the trophy requirements around the hanger before proceeding with the story.

This is the final trophy that you can unlock in the game if you've been doing them in a single playthrough. Furthermore, only Lee can do this trophy as Vincent is unable to enter the helicopter.

To the right of the Grenade Brothers arcade machine is a small room that you can enter. Go inside this room and enter through the red doors to go outside on the roof. You will find a helicopter on the landing zone that you can interact with. The player controlling Leo needs to open the helicopter doors with . Leo will enter the helicopter and pilot it for a few seconds during a brief cutscene. After the cutscene, Leo will exit the helicopter and the trophy will unlock.

If you opened the hanger doors and then get on the plane so you can take-off, then you've gone too far and will need to use Chapter Select.

  • You helped fix the bike.

Note: Vincent Moretti is the only one who can do this trophy; however, Leo Caruso needs to at least enter his family's trailer.

    Chapter Select: Preparation - Reunion
Trophy unlocks for both players? Yes

After finding Leo's family, you'll be in the Bonds section of this chapter where the player controlling Leo will be tasked with the following objective:

    • Speak to Alex

Ignore the above objective. The player who's controlling Leo needs to at least enter the trailer house. Leo can do his own thing, but don't proceed too far or pass the treehouse section. This will enable your co-op partner of Vincent to trigger the rest of this trophy's requirements.

Since Vincent is the only person who can achieve this trophy, speak with Linda by pressing to see if you can help her fix the motorcycle. If Leo entered the house, she should ask Vincent for some help by wanting him to get something for her. She will only ask for help if you walked/run away from her a bit (as long as Leo entered the house). Talk to Linda again with and she will ask you to grab her a wrench from the shed nearby. Go and get the wrench off the shed's table and give it to her. Once you give her the wrench, she will ask you to start it up for her. Walk around the motorcycle and press to interact with it. Now you'll need to time the on-screen prompt with and the trophy will unlock for doing so.

If Leo grabs the hammer off the nearby table to repair the sign next to the treehouse, then you've gone too far and will need to use Chapter Select.

  • You are clearly good with a bat.

Note: Only the player hitting the Home Run will unlock the trophy. So if playing online, you will have to take turns so your partner gets an opportunity to achieve this trophy too.

    Chapter Select: Preparation - Reunion
Trophy unlocks for both players? No, you both need to do it individually

After fleeing from the police, you'll be in the Reunion section of this chapter where you'll be tasked with the following objective:

    • Find Leo's family (Vincent) | Find your family (Leo)

Ignore the above objectives and do the all the trophy requirements around this trailer park before searching for Leo's family.

For this trophy, you'll need to hit a home run while playing Baseball. You will find two people playing baseball nearby the trailer that the cheating husband was in for the No Cheating trophy. The player going for the trophy needs to take the baseball bat from the guy who has the bat. He will give it to you and then you can hit the baseball being thrown at you by the NPC. (Optional: your co-op partner can ask for the baseball from the other guy and throw it). Either method you choose will work as long as you hit a home run by getting a score of about 175-200. Anywhere over 175+ should unlock the trophy for the player who is swing the baseball bat.

If you're playing online or local co-op, be sure to let your partner get a chance to unlock the trophy because the trophy won't unlock for them until they also achieve a 175+ home run score.

If you've pushed the dumpster to trigger a cutscene with Leo's family, then you've gone too far and will need to use Chapter Select.

Secret trophies

  • You took a break from it all.

    Chapter Select: Fugitives - Breather
Trophy unlocks for both players? Yes

This trophy is another reference to Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons and it is quite easy to miss if you take the wrong path on the mountains. At the start of this chapter, stick to the far-right path and keep following it until you come to a dead end with a cliff and river. Now you need to follow the edge of the cliff to the left and jump over the gap. There will be a small stone rock platform that you can both sit on like a bench. Sit on it with and once you're both sitting on the rock, a brief cutscene will trigger and the trophy will unlock shortly after.

If you've reached the big log both you and your partner need to lift to reach a campfire site, then you've gone too far and will need to use Chapter Select.

  • Music was played in harmony.

Note: Vincent Moretti needs to play the Piano and Leo Caruso needs to play the Banjo.

    Chapter Select: Fugitives - Farmstead
Trophy unlocks for both players? Yes

This is trophy can be done after making a choice to either do Vincent's way of releasing the horses or Leo's way of subduing the couple by tying them up. The choice you make won't matter for the trophy, so pick whichever choice you want during your playthrough. After completing the choice that you've selected, you should have the following objectives:

    • Change clothes
    • Get to truck

Ignore the above objectives and do the all the trophy requirements on this farm.

For this trophy, enter the couples' house and you'll find a banjo and a piano in the living room. You need to have Leo play the Banjo nearby the window and Vincent needs to play the Piano. When you see the difficulty option come up, select "Easy" to make this trophy much easier for yourself. This also applies to your co-op partner. Now both of you will get random sequences of / / . You both need to play the musical instruments at the same time and try to land about 15-20 perfect notes without messing up. If you've both done this correctly, a brief cutscene will happen and both men will play a song together. The trophy will unlock when the cutscene ends. Please see the Timeless Treasure trophy next before you proceed with the current story objective.

If you've fixed the truck to trigger the getaway section, then you've gone too far and will need to use Chapter Select.

  • You linked up to get past.

This trophy is an Easter Egg of Zelda: A Link to the Past. To achieve the trophy, enter the house and go into the living room. Across the fireplace is a grandfather clock that both players can interact with. You'll both need to time your interaction with the Grandfather Clock and press the button at the same time. If done correctly, a brief cutscene will happen and the sound of a door opening will be heard. Go upstairs and enter the hidden door to find a treasure chest. Open the treasure chest to trigger another cutscene and the trophy will unlock.

If you've fixed the truck to trigger the getaway section, then you've gone too far and will need to use Chapter Select.

  • Dark desires done right.

Note: Leo Caruso is the only one who can do this trophy; however, Vincent Moretti needs to help push the chair back.

Chapter Select: Preparation - Violent Questioning
Trophy unlocks for both players? Yes

After chasing and capturing Ray, you'll both be on the rooftops for the Violent Questioning section of the chapter. There are various tools on the roof that can make Ray talk about Harvey's whereabouts. However, I recommend that you don't do anything before proceeding to question him.

Do the following in order to unlock the trophy:

    1. Have Vincent walk up to Ray and press to talk.
    2. Select "Push him back" and Vincent will ask for Leo's help to drag him to the ledge of the roof.
    3. Leo needs to go over to Vincent and Ray press to help drag the chair back.
    4. Now the Vincent player can idle for a bit and do nothing while Leo finishes the trophy requirement.
    5. The player controlling Leo needs to go the red door on the left and press between the red door and the table. The prompt for the doesn't appear on your screen because this is a hidden event.
    6. If Leo does this it correctly, his character will lean over on the table in anger like the screenshot below:
      .

Now all you need to do is wait, because the trophy requirements have been fulfilled. A brief cutscene will trigger and Leo will get very angry at Ray. The player controlling Leo will need to run towards Ray and press to kick him off the roof, killing Ray and unlocking the trophy. Since you're not supposed to kill Ray, the level will reset and replace Ray back near the edge of the roof.

If Ray gives in and starts talking about the whereabouts of Harvey, then you've gone too far and will need to use Chapter Select or you can quickly restart the checkpoint to reset it.

  • "Houston, we've had a problem."

Chapter Select: Preparation - A New Life
Trophy unlocks for both players? Yes

Near the start of this chapter, you'll enter an elevator and a guard will run in along with you. You can make a choice of Vincent's way to talk your way out of it or Leo's way to knock him out. Either choice will work.

Before doing anything else, ignore the current objective of finding Carol. Do the trophy requirement by going into the waiting room. In the waiting room is a television that you can turn on. It will show an image of the first man landing on the moon. Both players need to then sit on the green couch in front of the television and after waiting for a few minutes. A brief cutscene will trigger for the player who's sitting on the left side of the couch. They will fall asleep and will be on the moon. Once you're in full control of your character on the moon, the trophy will unlock. Either player can have this dream, but it will only trigger for the character on the left of the couch.

If Vincent speaks with the receptionist to gain access to Carol’s room, then you've gone too far and will need to use Chapter Select.

  • You did what the wind couldn't.

For this trophy, go outside and look for an Amish windmill and red barn. Climb the ladder on the windmill to reach the top of it. Now all you have to do is keep interacting with it by pressing to get it spinning. Once you've gotten it to spin faster, a brief cutscene will happen and the trophy will unlock. Please see both the In Sync and Timeless Treasure trophies before you proceed with the current story objective.

If you've fixed the truck to trigger the getaway section, then you've gone too far and will need to use Chapter Select.

  • Not kids anymore.

    Chapter Select: Preparation - Reunion
Trophy unlocks for both players? Yes

After fleeing from the police, you'll be in the Reunion section of this chapter where you'll be tasked with the following objective:

    • Find Leo's family (Vincent) | Find your family (Leo)

Ignore the above objectives and do the all the trophy requirements around this trailer park before searching for Leo's family.

For this trophy, go to the playground section of the trailer park. Look for a seesaw next to some swings. Have both players sit down on this seesaw together to trigger an awkward cutscene that will unlock the trophy.

Please see the Home Run trophy next before you proceed with the current story objective.

If you've pushed the dumpster to trigger a cutscene with Leo's family, then you've gone too far and will need to use Chapter Select.

  • You set a new record.

Note: Leo Caruso is the only one who can do this trophy.

Chapter Select: Escape - The Yard
Trophy unlocks for both players? Yes

This is the very first trophy that you can obtain, and it can only be done with Leo.

After the introduction, you'll be in the prison yard with a bunch of exercise equipment. The co-op partner who's playing Vincent needs to do nothing while the Leo co-op partner goes to the two men on the right. Speak with the older man and he will say that the other guy who is currently working out has a record of 19 reps. To beat this record, you'll need to achieve 20 reps. This is done by interacting with the exercise machine to the right of the man with the button and then tapping the button repeatedly until you've reached 20 reps. As you get higher and higher, the tapping becomes much harder to do. I highly recommend that you lay the controller down and mash the button with your index finger to reach the goal much easier. Once you've achieved 20, the trophy will unlock.

If you fail or get off the equipment, you'll need to start the count all over again. Additionally, you don't want to trigger the fighting scene in the prison yard or you won't be able to restart the checkpoint to attempt the trophy again unless you use Chapter Select.
