Introduction:

A Hat in Time is a loving tribute to old 3D platformers. Taking a lot of inspiration from the likes of Mario 64 and Sunshine, it was kickstarted back in 2013 for just under $270,000 and for that amount they've made a fantastic game! Cute as heck visuals, great and funny voice acting and a brilliant soundtrack. Jump in with hat girl and have a great time.

Step 1: Play through the acts and complete the Time Rifts

The best way to do this is to just enjoy and play the game first. As you're making your way through each act make sure to grab as many pons as you can (the green orbs that are your currency) and pick up the glowing balls of yarn that you will see scattered around. These pons can be used to buy Badges from the Badge Seller, and the yarn can be used to create new hats in the menu. Each hat and badge gives you a new skill or power up, and as you’ll need most of them by the end of the game it's best to grab as many of these pons and yarns as you can as you go.

Time Rifts will be unlocked as you progress through the story, with each one containing another Time Piece. These rifts are hidden within each chapter, so check Return Home for details about their locations. You can face the final boss after collecting 25 Time Pieces, but you could leave it until last if you wish.

In this step you will earn:

Put a Badge On It
Badge Master
Let there be light
Mafia Town - All clear!
Subcon Forest - All clear!
Battle of the Birds - All clear!
Alpine Skyline - All clear!
Return Home

Step 2: Clean up the misc trophies

There are quite a lot of misc trophies within the game and several of them you may earn during Step 1 without even trying. That being said check through the individual trophies for more information as many require being in specific acts or the use of specific badges and hats. You should have a good handle on the gameplay at this point and while a few of these may take a couple of tries, none are too hard.

In this step you will earn:

Sequence Break
No Time to Explain
Big Fan
One Punch
If I fit, I sit
360 no-feet
Secret Intruder
True Detective
False Detective
Vacuum Vandal
Afraid of Water
Slip 'n Slide
The Floor is Lava
The Perfect Parade
Take a Hike
Pillow Fort
A Series of Unfortunate Accidents
Personally I Prefer the Air
Fueling the Feud

...and the Platinum:

Small child, big trophy

38 trophies ( 15  14  )

  • Collected all the trophies

Congratulations! You helped out hat girl so she's free to head home.

  • Put on your first badge!

In each world throughout the game you will find a strange creature called the Badge Seller. You can purchase many different badges from him that you will need for other trophies but you will also be able to find some badges in the world and will be given some as part of the story. The first badge you can find is the Camera Badge, and you can get it as soon as Act 2 in Mafia Town. On the outskirts of town will be a road with a tourist who has lost his camera to some seagulls. Jump over to the rocks he is pointing at to pick up the badge and it will automatically be equipped, giving you the trophy.

  • No hand-holding for you, apparently.

This can only be obtained in the first act of the game, Welcome to Mafia Town. To get this you need to reach the Mafia goon who has your umbrella without activating the first cutscene with moustache girl. To do this, jump on the barrel to your right as soon as you start the level. From here you can jump up through the gap in the blue cloth above you and climb up to the broken building. Head right and you should see a fountain and the glow from the Time Piece.

The trophy will pop during the cutscene with the Mafia.

  • Complete Train Rush without dying or time bonuses!

Train Rush is a level in Battle of the Birds where you need to run to the end of the train and hit a button there. You need to be wearing the Sprint Hat and using its power, by pressing , to sprint through most of the level while making sure not to pick up the clock pickups and avoiding the many projectiles coming at you! You can take damage but if you die or jump into any of the clock pickups, you will have to Return to the Hub and restart the level. Most of the stage is a straight line but personally, I found the hardest part of the stage to be when you end up on the roof of the train and have to jump some quite large gaps. If you fall here, you will be teleported quite a distance back, which can ruin your chances of getting to the end in the allotted time. This might take a bit of practice just to know where the projectiles are going to come from but if you can get through that roof section first time you should make it to the end with around 10 seconds left on the clock.

Here is a video by Dan for reference:

  • Hook onto a ceiling fan with the hookshot!

To get this trophy you will need the Ice Hat (you can find the Ice Yarn to be able to create this in the Dead Bird Studio Act and various other places after that) and the Hookshot badge that you can find in the act Subcon Well in the Subcon Forest chapter. In the main hub world you should see a yellow slide by the window. Use your Ice Hat power on the tile in front of the slide to head up through it and find a secret room. Jump on top of the furniture in this room and then jump toward the centre of the room while holding . You should grab onto the fan and start to spin, then the trophy will pop shortly after.

  • Defeat any boss with the 1-hit hero badge equipped.

The 1 hit-hero badge can be bought for 500 pons from the Badge Seller once you've collected 6 Time Pieces. This badge does what it says on the tin, if you get touched once - you die! The easiest boss to do this with is the boss in Mafia town as he has the simplest pattern of attacks to learn. I would suggest leaving this until you've got the Time Stop Hat (the yarn for it will be found in the Alpine Skyline chapter) because being able to slow time down during some of his attacks is very useful. I'm unsure if this matters or not but I would suggest equipping the badge before starting the level and not attaching it mid-boss battle.

    Here's a video by Pyr0n1c for reference:

  • Sit in 3 chairs!

This was the first trophy I earned and can be got within the hub world using the chair in your bedroom, the bean bag by the television and a chair by the window. There are dozens of chairs throughout all the worlds and all you need to do is press next to them to sit down and relax for a moment.

  • Do a 360 flip on the scooter!

You can either earn this in the Subcon Forest act Mail Deilvery Service where you will be given a scooter or by wearing the Scooter Badge which changes your Sprint Hat into a scooter. Get a running start and jump into the air and spin the analogue stick around. If you manage to do a full 360 in the air the trophy will be yours. If you are having trouble in the Subcon Forest, then using the Scooter Badge and jumping from a high ledge in Mafia Town means you should be able to do a lot more than 360 degrees and get the trophy with ease.

  • Collect all Time Pieces in Mafia Town!

  • Collect all Time Pieces in Battle of the Birds!

  • Collect all Time Pieces in Alpine Skyline!

  • Make it through Dead Bird Studio without being seen at all!

Dead Bird Studio is the first act of the Battle of the Birds chapter. To get this you need to avoid all the detection cones for any of the birds as you make your way to the end. They all have set patterns you can learn if you step back and watch them for a while so it's best to take your time and watch before jumping in. There are places where you can hide to avoid certain birds but the hardest parts for me were the moving platforms. You can hit the switch again to move in the opposite direction if you're worried about being spotted.

Here is a video by YTSunny if you're having trouble:

  • Find all Murder on the Owl Express clues!

Murder on the Owl Express is act 2 of the Dead Bird Studio chapter. In this act, you will be asked to find evidence as to who the killer is on board the train! The evidence comes in the form of 6 folders that can be found in the rooms on the train. You have 1 owl hour to find all the evidence, but this isn't actually true. Time will only run down once you've been into certain rooms on the train so the time will only run down once you enter and exit the room labelled "KEEP OUT!". Make sure you've collected all other folders before you enter that room.

    The locations are:

    • In the back of the Luggage Room in the corner past two crows. It's easiest to drop down on it from above.
    • In the VIP Room there is a table with the folder on. A crow will be guarding it so you'll need to time your jump.
    • In the Rec Room, the folder will be right in front of you.
    • In the room where you need to save your pet's pet. Once you have saved them, talk to them and they will give you the evidence.
    • In the Lounge you will find the folder on top of a cart.
    • In the room labelled "KEEP OUT!", it's the room above the crowd of crows. You'll find a switch in the lounge that activates the lift that gives you access to it.
  • Make it through Murder on the Owl Express without finding any clues (you suck)!

In the opposite to True Detective, you need to make your way around the train without picking up a single folder!

  • Ride the vacuum!

In the hub there will be a small round roomba like vacuum cleaner working away on the carpet. Jump onto the poor thing and ride around for awhile and the trophy will pop.

  • Don't fall into the rising water in Subcon Well!

Subcon Well is an act in Subcon Forest. There will be a section just after receiving the Hookshot Badge where you will need to swing across gaps from pipe to pipe while water is rising below you. You have quite a lot of leeway in regards to time so just be careful with your jumps. If you do fall into the water, then you need to quit to the hub and restart the act.

  • Slide down a really long slope!

There isn't a set place to do this, as long as you slide (press to slide) down a slope of a decent length you will get the trophy. The easiest place to get this is in Mafia town as there are several sloped paths that you can slide down. I got it on the slope near the building site and after only quite a short distance.

  • Complete the Lava Cake peak without touching the lava at all!

Lava Cake is an act in Alpine Skyline. To get to the top of this giant fire cake you will need to jump, hookshot and be fired out of cannons. There's nothing too difficult and there are only a couple of enemies around that you can ignore. The main issue is that certain platforms sink into the lava every few seconds. To make this easier I suggest waiting until you've got the Time Stop Hat so you can use it's power to slow down time and jump over the sinking platforms without worrying.

  • Complete The Big Parade without falling into the audience below!

The Big Parade is an act in Battle of the Birds. You will have a marching band following you around the area constantly as you jump across rooftops and along electrical wires. As things progress you will need to hit a few switches and jump on a few buttons which will set off fireworks and other hazards and this will be the time where you may have some issues.

Outside of when you're being asked to hit the switches and buttons try to stick to the rooftops and walk around in large circles. This is quite a long mission but as long as you don't fall into the crowds at the very bottom of the area you will get the trophy, regardless of how much damage you take from anything else. If you do touch the floor you will need to quit to the hub and restart the act.

  • Climb to the top of Subcon Forest's big mushroom!

When you start the first act in Subcon Forest you will be right next to this big mushroom, which has furniture inside it and looks more like a tree. Climb up the branches and use the smaller mushrooms to bounce up to higher platforms and eventually you will reach the top! There are some tricky jumps and this might take a few tries but there's no punishment for failure or any enemies trying to knock you off.

This video can be used for reference if you’re having issues:

  • Find Hat Kid's Secret Hideout!

To get access to the secret hideout, you will need the Ice Hat (you can find the Ice Yarn in Dead Bird Studio and then other places after). In the bedroom there is a pile of pillows that you can swim in, jump in and move the camera around and you will see a hole below you. Press while wearing the Ice Hat to fall down into the hideout and the trophy will pop.

  • Equip 3 badges!

Once you have collected 3 and then 14 Time Pieces, the Badge Seller will offer a special item that increases the number of badges you can equip. Once you have bought the items to equip 3 Badges, enter the menu and equip them to get the trophy.

  • Knock off all the sitting Mafia in Mafia Town!

In Mafia Town, as you explore, you may see one of the goons sat on a ledge dangling their legs off the side. There are 5 of these all together and you need to run into their backs and knock them off!

    Their locations are:

    1. Through the broken building directly behind where you start Welcome to Mafia Town, on the left.
    2. In the partially built tower next to the Badge Seller. This is near the fountain.
    3. On one of the red beams at the building site.
    4. Sat on a roof looking out at the lighthouse just below number 3.
    5. Sat on the docks next to the lighthouse, just below number 4.

Here is a video by gamecube762, that shows all of their locations:

  • Do 5 homing attacks in a row, without touching the ground!

There's not many places where this will be easy to do, as the homing attack can be a little fiddly. The best time I found to get this trophy is during the finale in Alpine Skyline. You will come to an area where you can only cross by doing homing attacks on spiders. Firstly head left using the spiders to get up to the platform, and then turn around. Now go back the way you came, using homing attacks on the three spiders in a row, but head left after the third spider. Use to get a distance boost, then to jump up out of it and quickly homing attack the spider here and the one after that. The trophy will then be yours!

Here's a video showing you how it is done:

  • Collect all Time Pieces!

There are 40 Time Pieces to collect throughout the game in the various chapters. The break down looks like this:

    Spaceship Hub - 2
    Mafia Town - 10
Battle of the Birds - 10
    Subcon Forest - 9
    Alpine Skyline - 8
    Time's End - 1

Most will come from completing the acts, and the rest will be found within the time rifts that you need to find in each chapter and in the main hub. These time rifts will appear as you progress and instead of them being separate levels, they are actually hidden within the chapters. When you look at the level select screen for each chapter you can see which rifts you have unlocked (they all unlock through story progression) and with it a photo of the rift's location. You can go look for it yourself or use this video by Slimecube to see where they are and how to get to them:

  • Get a total of 2000 points in Battle of the Birds!

Battle of the Birds is the second chapter of the game, where you will complete 4 acts, each one being a "movie". After completing each act you will get given a score based on certain items you've picked up and things you've done. You should get a score of about 500 on each level just for completing them and if you don't get 2000 after completing all the levels, I recommend replaying the level "Picture Perfect" and complete more of the optional objectives there.

  • Light up the spaceship!

    Story related, can't be missed.

You will get this for collecting your first time piece, which will happen by completing the first act in Mafia Town.
