Introduction:

A Bastard's Tale is an arcade-platform game by No-Pest Productions. You take the control of a courageous knight whose quest is to kill the oppressive king that rules the kingdom the game takes place in. The game offers a Story where you can experience the plain but entertaining story and the Endless Fighter Mode, where you face an unlimited number of enemies.

Trophy-wise the game is a force to be reckoned with so be prepared for trouble. Each level in the Story Mode will test your patience, timing and skills as the game was designed to be unfair and punishing. Unfortunately this is the easy part of the game as the Endless Mode and the trophies that come with it are pretty much impossible to be obtained due to the unbelievable difficulty the mode itself poses to the player. If you're still intrigued by the game and want to give it a shot, take a deep breath and prepare yourself for hundreds of game over screens and hours of frustration.

Walkthrough:

Step 1: Complete the game for the 1st time while learning the ropes

In this step you should focus on learning each stage perfectly and developing effective techniques to use against the enemy. You will be in trouble right by the moment you start playing the first mission so here are some tips below that will hopefully make this step much easier:

Be Patient

You will die hundreds of times in this game, that's a given. It'll be natural even for the most patient person to get frustrated but each time you restart a level, use it to your advantage in order to learn the patterns of the enemy movement better. The more time you spend on a level, the better you will be the next time you visit it in subsequent playthroughs. Just stay calm, take a deep breath each time you die and you'll make it to the end in no time.

Attack and Roll

By far the most effective technique against the majority of enemies in this game and thankfully it's very simple to execute. Approach the enemy in front of you with caution and once you find an open window to his attacks get up close and personal and press either , or (My personal favorite attack was the overhead one () as it has slightly bigger range than the other ones). Immediately after that press + in order to avoid getting hit. If you master this technique then you'll be able to defeat almost half of the enemies you'll meet with little to no trouble.

Hone your blocking skills

Sadly, using the "Attack and Roll" method will not get you to the end of the game, as many enemies have unavoidable and deadly attacks. You can block the attacks of the enemy by pressing either + , + or + . Be sure to learn the timing of the attacks in order to be able to press the right button and successfully block every attack from all sides. It will take some practice but once you get yourself comfortable with blocking, you'll be able to go as far as finishing the game.

After completing this step, you should have these trophies:

Level 1
Level 2
Level 3
Level 4
Finish the Game

Step 2: Complete NG and NG+ in Story Mode

Personally, I consider this as the easiest part of the game as you're probably experienced enough to tackle the game 2 more times without facing a lot of trouble. The NG and NG+ modes are practically the same in terms of difficulty, apart from two small differences (check Finish NG+ for more information). Both modes can be finished in 1-2 hours and completing them will result in the end of your Story Mode playthroughs.

After completing this step, you should have these trophies:

Finish NG
Finish NG+

Step 3: Face the Endless Fighter Mode

This is what it all comes down to, all your practice and everything you learned will be put to the test here. In this mode you will face an unlimited number of enemies and will only be able to regenerate any lost health after defeating 10 enemies (IMPORTANT NOTE: 1 Full Health Bar = 5 Hits). If it was difficult enough to defeat 5-6 enemies with 2 full health bars, you can only imagine what is going to happen here. You will be facing each kind of enemy you met in the Story Mode (including Bosses) so be prepared for the worse. For the record, no one in the world on either the PS4 or Steam has unlocked the 2 final trophies legitimately so focus on unlocking the Not Bad trophy and consider anything more than that as a unique bonus.

After completing this step, you should have these trophies:

Not Bad
Impressive
Impossible

10 trophies ( 3  )

  • Beat level 1

    Story-Related. Cannot Be Missed.

In order to unlock this trophy, you need to complete the 1st stage in Story mode. This is considered an easy stage that introduces you to the basic mechanics and how the enemies will attack in the next stages. Below is a detailed strategy on how to approach and defeat each enemy in Level 1.

Peasant (Difficulty: Easy): The Peasant is a very simple enemy. He uses a bamboo stick and he slowly attacks from all sides. Once he takes his battle stance, you will need to block his attacks twice in order to be able to attack. It takes only one hit to take him down so you will have no trouble here

Elder Villager (Difficulty: Easy): The Elder Villager is much easier than the Peasant. He uses a spading fork as a weapon and he attacks only once from a random side before fleeing. It's very easy to figure out where he will hit you, because he will carry the fork his left side if he's going to attack you from the left, on his right side if he's going to attack you from the right and over his head if he's going to attack you from the top. Simply block this attack and you will be able to move on.

Bulls (Difficulty: Easy) : The Bulls are very easy enemies as well but keep in mind that they attack in packs of 2-5. In order to defeat them, simply hit them once with the attack you're most comfortable with from a distance (Recommended Attack: ).

    Peasant: Check Above

    Elder Villager: Check Above

(BOSS) Black Knight (Difficulty: Medium): The Black Knight is the boss of the 1st Level. He carries a two handed sword and his attacks are similar to the ones used by the Peasant, only much faster. The most recommended technique here is to approach him with caution, block his attack once and then immediately use the "Attack and Roll" technique I explained in the Roadmap. Rinse and repeat 8 times and will be able to advance to the next level.

  • Beat level 2

    Story-Related. Cannot Be Missed.

In order to unlock this trophy, you need to complete the 2nd stage in Story mode. This Stage requires really good timing and precision in your attacks but it's nothing that you can't manage with a few tries. Below is a detailed strategy on how to approach and defeat each enemy in Level 2.

Guard (Difficulty: Medium): The Guard carries an one-handed sword and his attacks are fast, consecutive and deadly. If you're not careful he can deplete your entire health bar in seconds so approach him with extreme caution. The most recommended technique here is to approach him from a safe distance and mash the button in order to hit him, without giving him the chance to hit you back. Rinse and repeat for 5 times and you should be able to move on.

Horseman (Difficulty: Easy): The Horseman is similar to the Bulls with the sole difference being that he attacks alone. No big surprises here. Just keep your distance and attack with in order to throw him off his horse in one of the most hilarious kills you'll get in the game.

Pikeman (Difficulty: Easy): The Pikeman, as the name suggests, carries a pike and requires a special but easy tactic in order to be defeated. At first, use in order to make him drop his pike and then, after getting closer to him, attack him with the way you wish. Rinse and repeat for 3 times and he should be down (IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure to avoid his flying pike before moving on).

Horsemen (Difficulty: Easy): Same as above but now they attack in groups of 3. Attack them quickly in succession as instructed and you should be good to go.

Guard with a Shield (Difficulty: Medium): Same as the Guard but now you won't be able to attack from the side he has his shield (it's random every time) so attack carefully from the other sides and roll back when needed in order to avoid getting hit.

(BOSS) Platinum Knight (Difficulty: Hard): This is the point where most people get stuck. The Platinum Knight excels in combat and will block each one of your attacks. What you need to do here, is to block his very fast attacks at the very last moment. That is a very hard task so I came up with a smart way that made this boss go from hero to zero. Approach him slowly while blocking and wait until he attacks you from the top (you will notice his hands go above his head before attacking). This is the easiest attack to block so if he attempts to hit you from the left or from the right, simply go back and forth until he decided to attack you from above. Now keep trying to dodge his attacks at the very last moment until he loses his balance then quickly get close to him, attack and roll back. Rinse and repeat for 5 times and you will be able to advance to the next level.

  • Beat Level 3

    Story-Related. Cannot Be Missed

In order to unlock this trophy, you need to complete the 3rd Stage in Story Mode. You should spend quite some time in this Stage, because of a single enemy near the end of the level. If it wasn't for him, the level would be much easier. Below is a detailed strategy on how to approach and defeat each enemy in Level 3.

Mage (Difficulty: Easy): The Mage uses an unlimited number of daggers as weapons and his attack is always the same. Simply press whenever he throws a dagger at you (you will see him raise his hand over his head when he's ready to throw one at you) and get close enough to hit him. Repeat this 5 times and you will be able to move onto the next enemy.

Wasteland Native (1) (Difficulty: Medium/Hard): The Native uses a cane as a weapon and he attacks twice in a very small period of time. What you need to do here is focus on the sound his cane makes. Stay just far away from his attacking range and when you hear the cane sound for a second consecutive time, quickly approach him and use the "Attack and Roll" technique in order to avoid damage after your attack or from his cane when he's down. Rinse and repeat 5 times and you should be good to go.

    Mage: Check Above

King of the Crows (Difficulty: Near Impossible): The hardest enemy in the Stage. He uses two one-handed swords and his attacks are punishing as they are both fast and can deplete your health bar in no time. Here you have 2 choices:

1: Stay just outside his attacking range and when he's ready to use his overhead attack, quickly approach him and use the "Attack and Roll" technique. This is very difficult to master (especially in NG and NG+) but with lots of practice, you can move onto the next enemy unscathed

2: Go all out. Keep a full health bar up with a potion to your disposal, up until this enemy. Just approach him and attack without caring about health damage. It takes 5 hits to defeat him so if you're precise in your attacks, you should have a full health bar for the next enemy. This is the technique I preferred in my playthroughs as the next enemy isn't as hard as this one so you'll be able to get by him easily.

Wasteland Native (2) (Difficulty: Medium/Hard): This is the same as the previous one but with 2 differences:

1: He goes down with 2 hits
    2: He attacks differently

For the first hit, check above for more information on how to deal with him. After that hit, he will start swinging his cane endlessly. It looks bad but it's actually quite easy to hit him. Stay away from his attacking range and when you feel he's close enough, attack with to defeat him and proceed to the final boss.

(BOSS) Imperial Guard (Difficulty: Medium): By far the easiest boss in the game. His weapons and his attacks are the same as the ones used by the Guard with a Shield in Level 2. Follow the same technique, while always attacking just after he's done swinging his sword and after 7-8 he should be down.

  • Beat level 4

    Story-Related. Cannot Be Missed

In order to unlock this trophy, you need to complete the 4th Stage in Story Mode. This is by far the hardest stage in the game so you will spend most of your time here. The enemies here are fast and unforgiving but with patience and practice, you can pull through. Below is a detailed strategy on how to approach and defeat each enemy in Level 4.

Reindeer (Difficulty: Easy): This enemy is the same as the Bull in the 1st Stage but with the difference that his horns can block your attacks. For this Reindeer, use to attack him when he's close enough and you should be able to move on.

Forest Native (Difficulty: Hard): The Native here is pretty much a much faster version of the Peasant, who we met in the 1st Stage. He attacks with a bamboo stick from all sides with a very fast pace. Precision and good timing is the key to success here. Learn to block his attacks successfully and hit him whenever you can. It's going to take some time until you are able to block all of his attacks but if you stick to the plan, you will eventually manage to do so.

Reindeer: (Check Above): Instead of using to attack it, use as only his right side will be exposed.

Troll (Difficulty: Medium): He may looking tough but he's pretty easy to kill. Get inside his attacking range in order to force him attack you and immediately roll back to safety. While he's busy picking up his enormous weapon, get up close and personal with him and use the "Attack and Roll" technique as many times as it takes to bring him down.

    Forest Native: Check Above

Reindeer (Difficulty: Medium): Here you will face 4-5 Reindeer in a row and you need to attack them by using either if the horns are pointing on the character or if one of the horns is pointing at the screen. Deal with them as you've dealt with the Bulls and the Horsemen and you should be good to go.

Werewolf (Difficulty: Hard): The Werewolf carries 2 massive swords and his attacks are incredibly fast. If you try to attack him from a distance he'll back away so you need to time your attacks perfectly. Approach him or wait for him to approach you and when he reaches a distance you think you should be able to attack him, press before he can use his attack against you. It will take some time to master but it's nowhere as time-consuming as the Forest Native are.

(BOSS) Purple Knight (Difficulty: Hard): Ηe is practically the Black Knight, only bigger, faster and with a wider range. Before attacking him, approach him a few times so you will be able to learn his attacks how fast he uses each one. Once you're ready, use what you've learned against the Black Knight, while spamming the "Attack and Roll" technique and after 8 hits you will be able to complete the Stage.

  • Beat the game

    Story-Related. Cannot Be Missed

In order to unlock this trophy, you need to complete the 5th Stage in Story Mode. It's a short and sweet stage that will test what you've learned in the previous 4 stages. You've come far so take a deep breath and tackle the level with patience. Below is a detailed strategy on how to approach and defeat each enemy in Level 5.

Archer (Difficulty: Medium): The Archer is a combination of the Mage and the Guard. At first, use the attack you wish in order to block the arrows he throws at you. Once you're close to him, he will draw his sword and will practically turn into a guard. Follow the same tactic here and you should be able to defeat him in no time

Black Knight: Check in Level 1 for more information.

Imperial Guard: Check in Level 3 for more information.

(BOSS) The King (Difficulty: Impossible): This is the final boss of the game. The King has 2 phases. In the first phase, he will attack you with his horse. Things are easy here, simply hit his enormous sword with 3 times in order to force him abandon the horse. Now here's where the real trouble starts. You need to be some kind of God in order to be able to block his inhumanly fast attacks so this is not the way to approach him. Make sure to have as much health as possible (1.5 Health Bars is recommended). Now, slowly guide your character close to him but not close enough to attack you. Once you're in position to use your attack, he will be able to attack you as well. The key here is to beat him on time. If you manage to do so, then you will block his attack and deal him some damage. When you do it for the first time, you will immediately see that he's not as hard as he looks so rinse and repeat the procedure for 4 more times you should be able to kill him. Continue walking until you reach the balcony and watch the credits with a smile on your face.

Secret trophies

  • Beat NG

See Finish NG+ for information regarding this trophy.

  • Beat NG+

After defeating the game for the first time, you will notice that your save has been reset to Level 1 with a (+) next to the number. That means you're in the NG Story Mode, which is only slightly harder than the basic Story Mode. Nothing really changes, except from the fact that some enemies have become slightly faster on their attacks. If you follow the techniques for each enemy above, then you should be able to beat NG mode easily. Now you will notice that you save has been reset again to Level 1 with two (+)s next to the number. That means you're in the NG+ Story Mode, which again is slightly harder in terms of enemy attacking speed compared to the NG Story Mode. You will barely notice any change in your playthroughs so just focus on what you've learned in your 1st playthrough, then you should be able to beat both modes much easier than you think.

Below is a complete NG+ Story Mode playthrough. Thanks to EREKTORATOR (BiTSiN) for kindly providing this video.

  • Defeat 107 enemies in Endless Fighter Mode

The hardest trophy in the game by miles. In order to obtain this trophy, you need to defeat 107 enemies in Endless Fighter Mode but without dying. Here you have a single health bar and will be facing an unlimited amount of enemies and bosses but you're only allowed to refill your health bar after every 10 kills you make so be ready for trouble. The problem here is that there's no "easy way" to obtain this trophy, as the order that the enemies spawn is completely randomized so you can only make it far if you're skilled enough. An experienced player can defeat around 35-40 enemies, which is the main reason of why you can unlock the Not Bad trophy with some practice and why the next 2 trophies remain unobtained. If you're up to the challenge, then simply keep trying until you master the techniques needed to defeat each enemy without losing health and maybe you will be able to reach the magic numbers needed to unlock the 2 remaining trophies.
