8-Bit Anthology Volume I is a port/compilation of three of ICOM's four Macventure games – Shadowgate, Uninvited, and Deja Vu – all released in the mid 1980s. A “Macventure” game, as the portmanteau suggests, is an adventure game originally developed for the Macintosh computer. These are old-school adventure games (think of the recent Goosebumps game), with static locations, a verb bank, tons of ways to put yourself in an unwinnable state, and deaths galore. On the flip side, if you know what you're doing, each game takes about 20-30 minutes to complete.

Luckily for you, I've written a trophy walkthrough HERE to save you a lot of trial and error.

You don't actually have to beat any of the games, but all of the silver trophies take place in the final moments of their respective games, so you might as well. If you're following my walkthrough, I've listed the steps needed to actually beat the game; these are not necessary to earn the 100%, and are just there if you're curious about the endings to each game.

Another note: if you're planning on playing each game in a single session, don't worry about saving the game. The port has an extremely generous checkpoint system – it seems like every other room triggers a checkpoint. So don't worry about saving your game before unlocking one of the death trophies – selecting Continue will at most put you back in the room before the one where you unlocked the trophy.




You can do these steps in any order you wish, as all games are available to you the first time you start the game.

Step 1: Get all required deaths in Shadowgate

Play through Shadowgate, unlocking the required death-related trophies. Don't worry about saving the game, as the game has a fairly generous checkpoint system. Keep in mind there's no sort of area select for the game, so if you miss your opportunity with each of these trophies, you'll need to start a new game and play to the point where you can try again.

The only thing you need to worry about in Shadowgate are the torches – you must always have at least one lit torch in your inventory, or you will die. When the torch in your inventory dims, you only have a few more moves (maybe a dozen? It seems random) before the torch burns out. Before that happens, use one of the torches in your inventory to replace the dying one. There are plenty of spare torches scattered around the warlock's keep – whenever you see one, just pick it up to add it to your inventory.

By the end of this step, you will have earned:

Step 2: Get all required deaths in Uninvited

Play through Uninvited, unlocking the required death-related trophies. Don't worry about saving the game, as the game has a fairly generous checkpoint system. Keep in mind there's no sort of area select for the game, so if you miss your opportunity with each of these trophies, you'll need to start a new game and play to the point where you can try again.

The only thing you may need to worry about is the ruby for Consumed. Pick it up early in the game, and when it kills you, continue the game, then select it in your inventory and choose to “leave” it somewhere (the earliest you can do this is in the backyard, accessed through the game room on 1F). Depending on your progress in the game, you may not be allowed to leave it in the room where you are, in which case it will keep killing you, necessitating a new playthrough of the game to actually continue. Alternately, if you're worried, you can pick the ruby up early and keep spamming the “examine” command in the room, but that shouldn't be necessary.

Step 3: Get all required deaths in Deja Vu

Play through Deja Vu, unlocking the required death-related trophies. Don't worry about saving the game, as the game has a fairly generous checkpoint system. Keep in mind there's no sort of area select for the game, so if you miss your opportunity with each of these trophies, you'll need to start a new game and play to the point where you can try again.

Unlike the other two games, you don't need to play much of Deja Vu at all to get its trophies.

    Secret trophies

    • Wait until the dragon breath gets through your shield

      Shadowgate

      Midway through the game you will find yourself in a room with a bunch of weapons and skeletons and a dragon in the distance. Pick up the shield in front of you, then start picking up the bones and skulls surrounding you. After picking up three or four more items, the dragon will burn through the shield, killing you and unlocking this trophy.

    • Break a mirror into space

      Shadowgate

      After learning your first spell (Epor), speak it to make the rope on the ground rise and allow you access to the hole in the ceiling. Climb the rope and you'll be in front of three mirrors. Use the hammer (found in the dragon's room [see Melting Point]) on the right mirror to get sucked into space and unlock this trophy.

    • Set yourself on fire with a torch

      Shadowgate

      This can be done at any point in the game, as you will always need to have at least one lit torch in your inventory or you will die. Use the lit torch with self three times to burn to death and unlock this trophy.

    • Fall to your death after the troll removes the bridge

      Shadowgate

      South of the mirror room (see And beyond) is a hallway lined with coffins. You need to open the bottom right coffin for story reasons, but the one next to it contains a bag with copper coins. Open the bag and take the coins.

      Break through the middle mirror and you will soon find yourself at a bridge with a troll who demands payment. Give him two of the coins and he will remove the bridge and throw you into the chasm, unlocking the trophy.

    • Killed by the werewolf girl

      Shadowgate

      Late in the game you will find yourself in an observatory. Climbing the ladder in the observatory will bring you to a room with a tied-up woman. Take the blade next to her and she will kill you, unlocking this trophy.

      To safely take the blade, use the arrow (found in the secret passage in the book room near the beginning of the game) to kill her, then take the blade.

    • Killed by the warlock

      Shadowgate

      At the end of the game, you will face off against the warlock and a behemoth. In your inventory, use the blade with the staff, then use the orb with the staff. Use the staff with the warlock. He will kill you and you will unlock this trophy.

      If you actually want to beat the game, power up the staff like you did above, then use it with the behemoth.

    • Don't leave the car until it burns

      Uninvited

      The very first screen of the game has you trapped in a car. Do any 4-5 actions that don't involve you leaving the car (I just examined the steering wheel a bunch of times) and the car will burn up, unlocking this trophy.

    • Killed by the Belle

      Uninvited

      Once you enter the mansion foyer, open the north door. Try to open any of the doors in this new room and the Belle will appear. Try to open any of the doors again and she will kill you, unlocking the trophy.

    • Carry the ruby until it posesses you

      Uninvited

      On 2F, the top right door has a bureau with a ruby in it. Pick up the ruby. It will now slowly kill you (it takes about 50-60 moves to happen). You will see the Game Over skull three times and still be able to proceed – the fourth time it will kill you and unlock this trophy.

      You can drop the ruby in the back yard (accessed via the game room on 1F) if you don't want to just spam random actions 50-60 times to unlock this trophy.

    • Eaten by the spider

      Uninvited

      When you are able to open the manhole in the laboratory in the Magisterium, enter it and move through the north path. You will be in front of a spider. Either hit it or try to move past it and it will kill you, unlocking this trophy.

      Note that if you access the secret passage in the chapel (opened by picking up the goblet), you will still encounter this death, but it will not unlock this trophy.

    • Drown in the bathroom

      Uninvited

      Near the end of the game, you'll be locked in a bathroom with no toilet. Open the faucet on the tub and just keep examining stuff in the room to fill it with water and drown you, unlocking this trophy.

      To actually move on with the story, you will want to open the faucet and then keep trying to open the light in the ceiling – the water will bring you close enough to open it so you can go through.

    • Consumed by the evil spirit from your sister

      Uninvited

      After unlocking Cloggage and moving on with the story, move through the hole in the ceiling. Hit your sister to release the evil spirit, then either hit the spirit or just try to move past it. It will possess you and you will unlock this trophy.

      If you actually want to beat the game, use the goblet (from the chapel) on the evil spirit, then move through the window it was blocking.

    • Shot by the mugger

      Deja Vu

      Once you reach the main street in front of Joe's Bar at the beginning of the game, keep going between it and the alleyway. Eventually a mugger with a gun will spawn. Either try to speak with him or point your gun (found under the coat in the bathroom you started in) and he'll shoot you.
       

    • Eaten by the sewer gator

      Deja Vu

      When you exit the starting building of the game, you'll be in an alleyway. Open the manhole and enter it. Move south, then east, then west. Keep moving between these two screens until the alligator spawns. Try leaving and the alligator will eat you.

    • Blown up in a car

      Deja Vu

      In front of Joe's Bar is a car that you can unlock with Key 2 (found on the dead body you come across at the beginning of the game). To the left of all the pedals is a hood release button. Use it to cause the car to blow up.

    • Shot by the lady in red

      Deja Vu

      From the front of Joe's Bar, move east and you'll be in front of a police station. Keep moving between Joe's Bar and the police station until the lady in red spawns. When she does, either Examine her a few times or just try to move away and she'll shoot you, unlocking this trophy.

      When you continue the game, you may still be in front of the lady in red. To get away from her, Hit her. Her purse has a gun in it needed for a few trophies, in case you didn't take the one from the beginning of the game.

    • Try to rob the gun store

      Deja Vu

      From the front of Joe's Bar, move west a few times until you end up in front of the Guns and Ammo store. Enter it, then use your gun (either from under the coat at the beginning of the game, or from the lady in red's purse, or buying it from the gun store for $20) on the shop keeper. He will shoot you and you will unlock this trophy.

    • Die from amnesia

      Deja Vu

      West of the Guns and Ammo store is a cab you can use. Take it to the WESTEND address (learned from the note in the glove compartment of the car in front of Joe's Bar). Use the card key (found in the wallet in the coat at the beginning of the game) to take the elevator to the penthouse. Look at the picture under the mirror to get the KEDZIE address.

      Take the cab to the KEDZIE address. Use the gun to shoot the door open, then take the note from the desk. Open the desk and take Key 5 and diary.

      Take the cab to the SHERMAN address (learned in Joe's Bar, from examining the bill in the envelope in the desk that the dead body was on). Enter the building and walk up the stairs. You'll be in front of Ace Harding's office. Use your gun (either from under the coat at the beginning of the game, or from the lady in red's purse, or buying it from the gun store for $20) to shoot the figure behind the door, then use Key 5 to open the office. Move into the office and you'll drop dead from amnesia, unlocking this trophy.
