INTRODUCTION:
What do a young loose-cannon police detective, a former street gang leader, a tenacious tabloid journalist, an introverted pharmaceutical researcher and a mysterious girl in a cat costume have in common? They're all part of 428: Shibuya Scramble (aka 428 ?????????? / 428: Fusa Sareta Shibuya de / 428: In a Blockaded Shibuya), a Japanese visual novel by Spike Chunsoft, best known outside Japan for the Danganronpa and Zero Escape series. 428 was originally only available on the Japanese Wii (where it was published by SEGA) but was later ported to the PSP and PS3 in Japan, and at long last an English localization has arrived for PS4.
Unlike most visual novels, in which you play a single protagonist and are shown static images of the anime characters you interact with, in 428 you will decide the actions of multiple characters whose stories are interconnected in surprising ways and conveyed through live-action video clips and photographs. By ensuring that everyone does the right things and ends up in the right place at the right time, you will unfold an incredibly intricate narrative involving kidnapping, tense races against the clock, surprise plot twists and an all-encompassing threat to Shibuya itself. Not to mention a whole slew of bad endings for all of the characters.
This game is highly recommended to anyone who has ever enjoyed a visual novel and if you've never tried one before it's hard to imagine a better place to start. Be aware, however, that the gameplay consists entirely of reading text, switching between characters and making occasional choices. There are no exploration or puzzle-solving elements.
WALKTHROUGH:
Step 1: Complete the story
Play through the game and enjoy the story. This is not particularly difficult as the game offers optional hints every time you reach a bad ending. Each hour of the story operates as a stand-alone block and when all of the characters survive to the end of that hour, you will be able to proceed to the next.
At any time you can bring up the overall timeline by pressing . This will allow you to easily switch between characters and try different actions. Occasionally an outcome will be affected by the actions of multiple characters. At certain times the game will restrict further progress on one character until one or more of the others are caught up. When this happens you will be shown a "Keep Out" screen and the game will force you to pick someone else. Using the "jump" feature from another character's timeline will break the "Keep Out" and allow the story to advance. Don't forget to "jump" to another character every time the game offers you the chance and be sure to check all of the Tips highlighted in blue text (using then ) as character jumps will sometimes be hidden within them.
If you don't care about the story, you can press the and then use to set the text to auto-play, however it still scrolls a bit slowly and there is no option to speed it up further. The auto-play will pause at any choices and resume afterwards, however it will not pause for optional jumps to other characters.
I've avoided giving away any specific plot elements but refer to the notes under the story-based trophies if you have trouble progressing. This guide offers two walkthrough options: A step-by-step for players who just want to get through the game quickly and a list of correct choices organized by each character's path for players who want to go through the story on their own but would like an easy reference if they get stuck. After completing the tutorial in the 10:00 - 11:00 time block, you can start with any character you like and switch between them at any time. You can check the current time in your selected character's path by pressing to bring up the timeline, then to go back to the story.
You will earn these trophies from a normal playthrough of the story:
Welcome to Shibuya
Cat's Out of the Bag
Who Can You Trust?
Deadly Preposition
Infection
Choice and Sacrifice
Running Out of Time
Shibuya Scramble
The End?
Step 2: View the remaining Bad Endings
Each chapter (hour) of the story has a multitude of bad endings for each of the playable characters, 85 in all. If you're not using a walkthrough you'll almost certainly run into quite a few of them just by playing through the game normally. After finishing you can go back to the individual chapters and try to find any endings you haven't seen. The game keeps track of every ending you've reached and which ones you haven't. You can access this list by pressing the button on your controller while you're in the story (but not from the character selection screen) and selecting "Bad Ending List".
The game makes it easy to jump around the story and experiment with the outcomes of all the different character choices. At any time you can press to bring up the timeline and switch to any character at any moment in time that you've reached. You will be able to bring up specific choices and quickly select a different action, then press to go back to the timeline and see if your changes made any difference. Make sure you try out every possible choice for every character. Choices you have not yet made will be colored green, the current active choice will be red and any choices you have previously made that are not active will be shown as gray.
Refer to the individual trophies below for any endings you aren't able to find. I've listed the choices you need to make at the appropriate times for each character, as well as which character's path you need to be following to get the actual ending. This is designed to be as easy as possible to go back after playing through the story and pick up any endings you may have missed. I recommend this method rather than trying to get them all during your initial playthrough.
