Pesico
Hockey Ultimate Team http://cdn.www.easports.com/static/194.20.4/images/wordpress/wp-post-thumbnail/cj36PI.jpg So the big new feature in NHL 11 is Hockey Ultimate Team. It's a single player online mode where you can play against the CPU or real people in the EA Sports Ultimate Hockey League. Similar modes have been found in the FIFA and Madden series. HUT is what you get when you mix collecting hockey cards with the NHL game. You start out with an expansion team of 25 players (in the form of cards). You also get jersey cards, stadium cards, coach cards, training cards and contract cards. So why post this now? The demo is out and it can affect your team in the full game. While you won't keep your team from the demo, you can gain two packs you can get for free in the full game. Here is how: 1.1: By playing HUT in the Demo, you get a basic pack 1.2: If you Beat Canada in the Demo, that pack will be upgraded to a premium pack which will have a rare card. 2: By recommending the Demo to a friend, you get a second pack. Found in the HUT menu. Pesico
I may have to use this post as well, but feel free to post now. Discuss the HUT related part from the demo. Personally, I beat Team Canada on an alt account with the US demo (it came out a day earlier). I then downloaded the EU demo and have played a lot with my main account and I can't seem to beat them. I lost 1-0 earlier today against them when they scored on an easy shot from the blue line. When five-hole. My biggest moment from the demo was when I got Zetterberg from 91 overall to 99 overall with 3 cards (he only has 3 training slots). I also had a crazy last minute vs. that first round team you meat. Went down 2-1 then managed to score 3 goals in the final minute. I also had Pronger score an own goal on his team when I met Flyers.
Kahuna
Wow that's alot of information I'm sure you'll be adding to over the next month. It's gonna take me a while to fully get to grips with the system, but it'll be fun learning. The gameplay feels more realistic than previous games. I've only played 4 games in the EAUHL but have 4 shutouts. I'm tempted to quit while I'm ahead! If I get Zetterberg in my first packs then I know who to trade with... Pesico
I'll add as much stuff as possible when the game is out. I'll also add trophies as soon as they are available. And you got that right about Zetterberg:p
Ryudoz
Hey I like your write up. I laughed when I seen Brenden Morrison was a common card and Rask was a Rare card. Remember there are over 1,400 Cards. That might even just be player cards? If every NHL team has 6 good forwards and 4 good defense and 1 solid G. That's 330 Good cards out of 1,400.. Not all 30 teams have a a good top 6, 4 good D and a solid G. My point is if you see a NHL player consider it a Rare card. If you see a Tuka Rask that's a franchise card which should be built around..(But not played). The rarity of cards has such a deeper level then just common or rare. The three most important things are...training,contract and career. HUT Playoff Contender Qualify for a Hockey Ultimate Team monthly playoff tournament Team Colors Collect both a Logo Card and all Jersey Cards from the same team 5 Star Battle Beat another 5 star team with your 5 star team in a Hockey Ultimate Team online match These three trophies will be the hardest.. Now everything I said could be invalid if the trade system is used as designed.
Pesico
Thanks for your input Ryudoz. Do you have any idea about how big of a percentage of the teams will reach the playoffs? I can understand that that may be difficult to answer.
Ryudoz
Unfortunately I'm unaware of the formula that decides this. It would make sense to do the top 10-25%. It defiantly isn't between 30%-50%.
Pesico
Thanks for the answer. Looking forward to the challenge. Rammer just put up a blog post about how his strategy is for building a HUT team. I'll do something close to him. Dangles
How can you tell if a card is rare or common?
Pesico
How can you tell if a card is rare or common? Common: http://cdn.www.easports.com/static/315.3.6/images/wordpress/commoncard.jpg Rare: http://cdn.www.easports.com/static/315.3.6/images/wordpress/rarecard.jpg You can see that the rare card has a different design. Some rare players (Zetterberg, Lidstrom, Tavaras) even has an extra card page where there is a full picture plus their name on it. Do remember that a rare card doesn't need to be a player card. Could be training cards, jersey cards and so on to.
Ryudoz
Rammers Great. Basically that GM 101 tip he mentioned. Will be the number one downfall of most users. If you get a good card train him up that's cool...but he will most likely have no one to play with..and when you do get someone good, your good players contract or career will most likely be up. Sending the user back to step one. Salary wise. Find those rare euro's who are good but have low salary to be your team core for the first couple weeks. Rare or Common. Well from the Demo..Common is just a regular picture of a player. While the gold cards are rare. Now the cards that show a player like a card card picture. Those are super rare! Franchise cards I would call them. Get one of those and try to build around it.
Spikey654
Thank you for all of these tips you're giving us Ryudoz This mode looks cool, maybe a little confusing if you're careless with your cards.
Dangles
I dont care to much for this game mode. After I get the trophies for this game mode, I probably wont play the game mode agien.
RAM_hannibal
I am so pumped for this game mode. I am a big sim type sports player. I have always thrieved on GM type game modes in sports and I can't even express how much I am looking forward to this. 6 days to go! What player card will be the ultimate card to have? Meaning an automatic 99 rating? Name some players....
Pesico
By automatic, you mean after training them right? I know Zetterberg is starting out as 91 and he can be trained to 99 even though you can only put 3 training cards on him. You need rare training cards though. Key will be to get great talents with 12 training slots though. Lower salary if you sign them to a long contract and then train them up.
RAM_hannibal
Yah, by automatic I meant after training. I wondering how hard it will be to get Ovi and Crosby cards? Or how hard it will be to get some of the real true young studs like Stamkos, Taveras and Bobby Ryan? This is going to be fun. I wondering how much of a difference the coach will make?
Pesico
The coach will be important. He will give attribute boost to all the players I think. Like +3 in shooting for example. Bet there are rare coaches to. Wonder if they have contracts to.
Ryudoz
Coach's are very rare. Through all my experience with the game mode I never did see a Crosby or Ovechkin. Lots of users are over looking team chemistry. In the early goings we will be forced to build around the teams we have players for. Having the entire New York Islander roster is better then having a mixed roster of high to average ratings from all leagues.
RAM_hannibal
What is the best training card anyone has seen while playing the demo? I got a skater card today that was +5 in all catogories. That was a huge boost for Taylor Hall.

Then hopefully EA has fixed that problem with this game. But if you can keep buying new card packs in this game than can't you just keep getting contract cards that way? Hopefully that won't be an issue in this game.
Pesico
The key is to handle the team properly. Yes it's possible to go bankrupt in this mode, but not if you pay attention and don't use your money unwisely. It's supposed to be a challenge. I don't think you can just buy the expensive packs all the time (with pucks) and excpect to last long.
