My ps3 (80g, April 2007) YLOD 23rd of March 2010 at 14h30... I really thought it was dead forever. My ps3 had ("has" now) 3 years, and the warranty is long past (only had 1 year), so I decided to dissasemble my PS3 like Aidan showed in his pictures (also followed a little bit "gilksy1" videos on youtube)...

at first I REALLY didn't believe it would work... (how can "burning some chips" may repair the YLOD????) but damn... it's amazing ... now it's super quiet (almost scary) and it's up and running for 3 hours so far.

when I dissasembled it, it was SOOO dusty, I understand why it YLOD :D

Update, IT WORKED!!!

I ended up doing it twice. First time it booted for about 10 minutes, second time is still going strong. I managed it get my copy of Darksiders out, deactivate my PSN ID and backup all of my save files.

I think the reason I ended up doing it a second time was that I didn't put enough thermal compund on the CPU/GPU/Heatsink. This guide is freaking amazing and could easily be followed by someone who has ever built a computer. I even think that anyone could do it if they read the guide a few times and take their time on it. Thank you SOOOOO much Aidan! You're a file saver.

Great guide Aidan, thanks for posting this. My 60 gb launch PS3 went YLOD on me a little over a year ago. I bought a new one, boxed the broken one up and pretty much forgot about it. I saw this and decided to give repairing it a shot. I followed this guide and the thing's humming along like new now. This officially marks the first time that I've actually been able to fix any electronic device.

I'm kind of worried becuase my PS3 is cooling down after being reflowed but one of the black chips above the CPU/GPU expanded a lot. I'm not entirely sure if this is a guaranteed failure but I can suspect it's pretty close.

Great guide, Aidan. This is where I started when I got my first YLOD two nights ago. I was able to get it working again in a little over 24 hours, so many thanks for the directions and pictures. I'll be backing up all of my saves now, and maybe even pick up some no-clean rosin flux for the next time I need to take the sucker apart.

My fat 60Gb (launch) YLOD'ed - read this guide and followed the perfect Gilksy youtube videos - all working again!

Backed up system (just in case), bought cheap 120Gb Slim, did successful data transfer, then backed up the slim, put in the old 350Gb drive and did a backup restore.

Working perfectly again! :applause:

Thanks all!

Well at first i talked to a friend and he was advising me not to use a heat gun and use the oven instead.I was unsure at first.I could see his logic but didn't know if i really wanted to try it.

I then went to a third party repair shop and discussed it with the owner. He advised me to use the oven instead a heat gun. They use a type of incubator oven to fix ps3's so they know what they are talking about.A lot of third party console repairs do this instead of a heat gun.

So i don't think i there is a higher chance of damage, i don't feel i got lucky and i wasn't lied to.

Here is a video showing a BBC show investigating the ylod and showing a third party fixing them using an oven.

EDIT: After reading over that it might seem like i am complaining or attacking you and the way you use to fix ps3's.Sorry if you read it like that.As i said before i am just trying to offer an alternative method and really were all trying to reach the same goal. You have a great guide here that helped me and alot and i thank you for all the work you have put into it.

Old post, but it's worth pointing out that most of their oven fixed PS3s on that show ended up dying again. So, maybe don't pop your motherboard in the oven. ;)

i get the yellow light followed by the blinking red light, but not right away. Mine happens after playing a game for about 10 minutes. If I just boot the ps3 and let it sit on the xmb, nothing happens. Will this guide fix my problem or is this a seperate issue?

My PS3 60gig died last night. I wasn't even playing it. Just went to turn it on after playing it fine the night before and it powered up signed in then shut down with the YLOD. I pulled the hard drive and it did the same. I then did the fan test and the fan didn't kick on. I'm thinking that my problem may just be the Power supply. Any thoughts?

Or just general overheating, which appears to the problem mine has been having. If your PS3 is under warranty, Sony should fix it. If it's past warranty, take a look at some of the repair guides on youtube and see if you're willing to give your repair skills a shot.

After trying to fix my second YLOD in a few weeks, I got it working again, but only for a few minutes the first time. But I got a message that the system had overheated and I should wait for it to cool down, instead of just another YLOD. Turns out I had forgotten to plug the fan's power when reassembling it, so I cracked it open again, fixed it and it appears to be running well -- at least, until the next time.

Aiden's guide is pretty much right on with everything else on the web about the fixing the YLOD. Although I do things a little differently, because of my geeky electronics background. Like I give the whole board the heat treatment as your gun is warming-up. That way its prepped for re-flow.

I fixed a friend's a YLOD PS3 in the past, and I finally got one on my 60gig. I keep it in a well-ventilated area, and it showed once I took its guts out. There was barely any dust. It was like opening a new PS3 for the most part, quite amazing.

The only tips I would add is ensure you use Artic Silver 5 for your thermal compound like Aiden mentions. I also bent those fan clamps a little bit to give it a slightly tighter fit. Just don't go crazy when tightening with a power screwdriver! Works like new...now for how long? :)
