Introduction

Welcome to Sonic Mania, one of my most highly anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog games to ever come out! A true successor to Sonic 1, 2, 3 (& Knuckles), and CD! The game is, in my opinion, a near-perfect experience. For fans of any of the 2D Sonic games, you’ll feel right at home playing through this wonderful game!

The trophy list is a bit disappointing since it does not have a platinum, but overall it’s a fun selection of trophies to obtain! They range from doing a miscellaneous task in each level, to simply beating the game, earning every Chaos Emerald, and finishing every Bonus Stage with a perfect score (my personal favorite trophy :D)! You will enjoy going for all the trophies in this game, so take the time to enjoy it to the fullest!

Also note that there are no trophies for seeing the final ending with all Chaos Emeralds, nor are there trophies for completing the game with each character, but I would recommend playing through the entire game with both Sonic and Knuckles at the least just for fun. They have some slight differences in the level layouts and some boss battles!

Walkthrough

Step 1: Complete the game while trying to obtain as many Chaos Emeralds as you can and work on Bonus Stages.

Start a new game, preferably as Sonic (You can use any character(s) you wish though, but I would recommend using Sonic by himself to make a few other trophies easier, namely Collect ‘Em All). Then you should just work through the game at your own pace. Do not worry about the other trophies just yet, but try to do as many Special Stages and Bonus Stages as you can along the way.

Trophies Unlocked:

(B) See You Next Game

Step 2: Obtain the remaining Chaos Emeralds.

Self-explanatory. Just replay any level(s) and do the Special Stages until you obtain them all.

Trophies Unlocked

(S) Magnificent Seven

Step 3: Clean up all miscellaneous level trophies.

Now you will replay each level using Level Select in Mania Mode, or Time Trial Mode to get the trophies exclusive to each level.

Trophies Unlocked:

(B) Superstar

(B) That’s a Two-fer

(B) Not It Can’t Hurt You Anymore

(B) Triple Trouble

(B) The Most Famous Hedgehog in the World

(B) Window Shopping

(B) Crate Expectations

(B) King of Speed

(B) Boat Enthusiast

(B) The Password is “Special Stage”

(B) Secret Sub

(B) Without a Trace

(B) Collect ‘Em All

(B) Professional Hedgehog

Step 4: Clean up the Blue Spheres Bonus Stages with perfect scores on each.

This is the final step to getting 100% on the game, but depending on your skill with the Bonus Stages you may already have this step done. You will need to play through the game and not only beat each bonus stage, but also get a perfect score! It’s not overly difficult, especially if you played Sonic 3 on Sega Genesis/Megadrive, but it might pose a challenge for some.

Trophies Unlocked:

(S) Full Medal Jacket

(S) No Way? No Way

Good luck and have fun!

Trophy Guide:

Collect gold medallions in Blue Spheres Bonus stage

To earn this trophy (and Full Medal Jacket), you have to play the Bonus Stages of this game, also known as the Blue Spheres game.

These stages are accessed by collecting 25 or more rings, then activating a checkpoint in any level. If done correctly, you’ll see a halo of white stars floating around the checkpoint, and you need to jump into them to start the game.

There are 32 Bonus Stages, and you must get a Gold Medal on each to get the No Way? No Way trophy, whereas earning a Silver Medal on each earns you the Full Medal Jacket trophy.

If you’ve played Sonic 3 (& Knuckles) before, you’ll feel right at home going for this trophy! If not, here is how the game works:

  • Your goal is to collect all the Blue Spheres in the map without dying.
  • There are Red Spheres that kill you if you touch them, so these must be avoided at all costs! Collecting a Blue Sphere turns it Red, so you can’t grab it again or else you fail!
  • You will also find Yellow Spheres, which are “jumps” that launch you into the air for a set distance every time. These are used to get around certain maps.
  • There are also Rings to collect in each map. Some are sitting out in the open, but the majority have to be transformed by the Blue Spheres…
  • To transform Blue Spheres into Rings, you must find a shape of Blue Spheres that is greater than or equal to a 3x3 square and they must be entirely filled with Blue Spheres (ie no gaps). You must go around the entire circumference of the shape and once the outer perimeter is Red, the entire section will turn into Rings!
  • Some stages later on will have sneaky squares that have part of the border already Red. For these, if you just collect the Blue ones along the outer perimeter, you will still turn them into Rings!

To finish a stage, you simply need to collect all the Blue Spheres (Rings don’t matter). This will get you a Silver Medal.

To get a Gold Medal, you must collect ALL Rings and all Blue Spheres. The game also ends the moment you pick up the last Blue Sphere, so if there are any rings left make sure to grab them first!

On some stages, it is best to save a 2x2 square of Blue Spheres as your last ones. Because if you have say a 4x4 square and you turn them into Rings, the game will end (as the Blue Spheres are all gone), but you won’t be able to collect those 16 Rings.

Note that the game cycles through the entire list of possible Bonus Stages before repeating any. But once you obtain a Gold Medal, the game won’t bring that particular stage up again until you have 100% on the rest.

Similarly, once you earn a Silver Medal, you won’t be able to replay that stage to try for Gold until you have a Silver Medal on ALL the stages.

All the previous methods used to grind these out have been patched, so you'll have to either start a new game with different characters and play through them as you go through the game, or just replay Green Hill Zone (or any other level of your choosing) via Level Select on a completed file.

Collect silver medallions in Blue Spheres Bonus stage

See No Way? No Way for details to earn this trophy.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/4827/dff.jpg Magnificent Seven (S)

Collect all seven Chaos Emeralds

Self-explanatory. Every level has secret areas containing giant rings that lead to the Special Stages. What you need to do is beat each of the Special Stages in order to earn the Chaos Emeralds. Once you’ve collected them all, you will earn this trophy and also the ability to be Super Sonic/Tails/Knuckles!

The Special Stages are similar to the stages from Sonic CD, but if you haven’t played that game, here is what you do:

  • A UFO saucer will be carrying the Chaos Emerald away from you, your goal is to catch up to it before time runs out and simply collect it to finish the stage.
  • The UFO will always follow the same path, which is kind of like a racing circuit with an occasionally branching path.
  • You have a time limit, which is based on the number of Rings you collect throughout the stage. You can collect more throughout the stage to increase that timer, but there are a limited number of them and they won’t respawn upon completing a lap of the track.
  • You can also collect Blue Spheres to increase your top speed. This is a necessity for getting the emerald collected. Luckily there are a lot of these and they respawn after every lap, so no need to worry too much if you miss some.
  • After collecting a hefty chunk of Blue Spheres, your top speed will rise to Mach 2. You can collect even more to reach Mach 3 and that is the top speed. So once you hit that, any Spheres you collect are only for score purposes and nothing else.
  • If you fall off the stage at any point, you fail.

There are way more than 7 areas in the game with Special Stages, most levels have around 5 each. So don’t fret if you’re not finding many of these hidden areas or if you accidentally fail a few. My first run through the game, I only had 3 Emeralds. Then when I replayed each level, I found tons of hidden areas containing the stages!

I used Lava Reef Zone to grind out the remaining stages I needed, because I found the rings easier to find there (personal opinion). So pick a stage you like and start searching!

Achieve any ending

Story related, cannot be missed.

You will get this trophy upon completion of the boss fight in Titanic Monarch Zone Act 2. If you collected all the Emeralds, you’ll also be able to access a secret final boss fight, but the first time through you’ll only see the first ending.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/4827/49e.jpg Superstar (B)

Spin the Star Post!

Near impossible to miss. You’ll most likely get this without even trying! You just need to go through a checkpoint post while going really fast. I got this in the 3rd level, Studiopolis while just playing normally. So don’t worry about this one, it will happen while you play!

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/4827/c8e.jpg That's a Two-fer (B)

Find the hidden item boxes at the end of the Zone

This trophy can only be obtained in Mania Mode.

After the end of Act 1 of any level, you’ll see a goalpost fall from the sky and hit the ground, signifying the end of the current Act. You can jump into this post and knock it around the air before it lands. If you’re lucky, it will spawn a free item when it hits the ground. For this trophy you must get both item boxes to appear before ending the Act.

Each level has it’s own spawn points, but these locations never change. The easiest ones to get are in Act 1 of Green Hill Zone. There is 1 item box between the two purple flowers on the left, and the other is under the yellow sunflower on the right.

See the following video for a visual guide:

What would happen if you cross a bridge with a fire shield?

This trophy is earned on Green Hill Zone.

You have to find a Fire Shield and then run across a spiked bridge. The bridge will break and the trophy will pop.

There are 2 places to get the trophy:

  • Knuckles: Act 1. Pretty much right at the start of the game, you climb up a wall and it’s in plain sight. The bridge is directly after this. Near impossible to miss.
  • Sonic: Act 2. There is a Fire Shield in the middle of the level by taking the middle path. Grab it and walk to the bridge on the left.

I recommend Knuckles because it’s much faster to get to it. With Sonic you need to take a specific path and might not even reach the shield the first time, whereas Knuckles gets it in the first 30 seconds of starting his game and it's in plain sight.

Try for a 3 chain combo!

This trophy is earned on Chemical Plant Zone Act 2, during the boss fight. It must be done in Mania Mode.

It can also be earned playing Mean Bean Mode, which is unlocked in the Extras Menu while playing through the main game (Thanks stickghost for the info!).

This boss fight is a throwback to Dr Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, a really fun and addicting Puyo Puyo puzzle game that was from back in the 90s!

You need to use 4+ beans of the same colour to connect together, which causes them to disappear from the grid. The goal is to utilize the beans in a way so that when you set off a 4-colour bean, the remaining ones fall into place to set off another combo, followed by another combo. If you manage to get a combo of 3 sets of beans in a row from a single move, you’ll get the trophy.

It may be hard to explain on paper, so here’s a video of me doing the trophy (Note that I did a 4-Chain, even though you only need 3):

Have your photos taken in Studiopolis Zone

This trophy is earned on Studiopolis Zone Act 1.

Throughout the level you may run into little flying bug enemies that take pictures of you while trying to fly into you (enemy is on the right side of the image):

http://i.imgur.com/GhSyt4U.jpg

All you need to do is let one take your picture around 5 times while you dodge it trying to hit you, then this easy trophy will pop!

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/4827/109.jpg Window Shopping (B)

Let the wind take you through

This trophy is earned on Flying Battery Zone Act 2.

I recommend using Tails or Knuckles for this trophy, since you have to take a lot of upper paths. If you mess up a jump with Sonic, you might have to retry the level, whereas the other characters can fly/climb up if they miss a jump.

What you need to do is make your way to about 60% of the way through the level, all while always taking the upper paths until you reach a room with 2 windows above you. In this room, you will just simply need to jump through the rightmost window and the wind you carry you through the left one, earning you the trophy!

It’s a bit difficult to find, so I suggest using this video:

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/4827/573.jpg Crate Expectations (B)

Wreak havoc at the propaganda factory

This trophy is earned on Press Garden Zone Act 1 and must be done using Sonic.

This one is quite tough to find. You need to make your way through the level while always heading upwards whenever possible. You need to find the Fire Shield near the top of the map, and then use that to break a bunch of wooden boxes near the top. Then the trophy will pop.

Because the location can be hard to find, watch the following video for the location:

Get through Stardust Speedway Zone as quickly as possible

This trophy is earned on Stardust Speedway Zone Act 2 and is preferred to be done in Time Trial Mode using Sonic. It’s possible to beat with both Tails and Knuckles, but is much easier with Sonic!

What you need to do is beat the entire Act (minus the boss fight) in less than 1 minute. It sounds difficult, but is actually quite easy after playing through it a few times! The best way is to just keep playing in Time Trial Mode and utilizing the :triangle: button to reset yourself if you mess up, so that way you don’t have to waste your time as much.

Always take the upper paths, and learn when to jump to get to a new path instead of always following the current one.

When in the “maze-like” area with springs, take the right path twice. Then on the 3rd spring, wait a second and take the upper right path (lower right is a dead end), followed by right once more to exit. Finally just keep running to the right and you’ll be home free!

My time was just under 46 seconds. So beating it in under a minute is very doable, don’t be scared!

[ame]

[/ame]

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/4827/e7f.jpg Boat Enthusiast (B)

We really like boats

This trophy is earned on Hydrocity Zone Act 1.

Pretty easy trophy, providing you always take the upper route whenever possible! There are 4 boats across the map that you need to ride on to earn the trophy, but it seems that only the first 3 are needed for the trophy (at least for myself it was just the first 3).

The trophy is known to be buggy for some people, where it might not pop at all despite completing the requirements. If it happens to you, just play through the level again in Time Trial Mode and that should fix the issue!

From the start you can take any path, but the middle or upper paths are preferred. You will head upwards and reach an outer area above the water, containing a few chains that you can climb across. Keep following this path and you will land directly on the first boat.

As long as you don’t fall off this boat, continuing the level will force you onto the second boat. You’ll have to raise some water and then ride it as well.

The third one is a bit tricky. You’ll be sucked down under the water really deep, then have to use a bubble to get out. Instead of following this path to the right, head upwards to reach some fans which blow you skyward. From here, it’s a straight path to the 3rd boat. The trophy may pop after you ride this one.

The final boat seems to be impossible to miss providing that you took the previous 3, since the game will drop you right onto it!

The trophy will pop upon riding all the boats.

Here is a visual guide:

Try pushing a barrel to see how far it goes

This trophy is earned on Mirage Saloon Zone Act 2.

Near the very start of the level about 30 seconds in, if you take the lower path, you’ll see a barrel standing upright directly beneath a portrait of one of the enemies. Simply push this barrel until you fall below it.

You’ll land on a spritzer bottle, so follow the water path to the right and it will take you to a Special Stage Ring and also unlock the trophy!

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/4827/723.jpg Secret Sub (B)

You might have to submerge to find it

This trophy is earned on Oil Ocean Zone Act 2.

This one is very difficult to find! You need to make your way about halfway through the level until you reach a central area with 2 switches on each side and a Fire Shield in the oil below you (Every path will eventually lead here).

You then need to fall through the oil beneath the Fire Shield (you won’t die here). You will fall through the map and access another area below. You then need to keep going right and down whenever possible until you hit the actual bottom of the level (you WILL die if you sink too low in this oil).

From there, head right until you hit a wall. It may look like a dead end, but anyone that played Sonic the Hedgehog 2 back in the day might remember that there is an exploit to skip half the level by going underneath the wall while jumping to prevent death. Funny enough, the creators of this game made that the exact thing you need to do to earn this trophy!

Once you head under the wall, you’ll see a submarine there. Simply enter it and the trophy will pop!

Barrel through the lava, don't let anything stop you

This trophy is earned on Lava Reef Zone Act 2.

Throughout the level, you might have noticed a pair of robotic legs, and when you stand on them they walk over the lava while crushing anything underneath you. This trophy involves using one to kill an enemy.

If you take the middle/lower path through the level, you will arrive at a door containing one of these legs. Now just jump on the legs as they walk forward and they will crush a Rexon (those purple dinosaurs that spit fire at you), unlocking the trophy.

The location might be hard to find for some people, so here is a visual guide:

[ame]

[/ame]

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/4827/e3a.jpg Collect 'Em All (B)

Gotta gacha 'em all

This trophy is earned during the boss fight on Metallic Madness Zone Act 2, and must be done on Mania Mode.

One of the hardest trophies in the game!

The boss fight is Eggman controlling a big Gachapon machine (It’s a kind of Japanese toy dispenser, hence the trophy description).

To beat the boss you will hit his dispenser knob to let a mini-boss enemy out. He has 8 mini-boss enemies that can be unleashed, and once all are dead you attack the knob once more to win the fight.

There are 3 types of enemies:

  1. Amy Doll – These latch on you and explode. Shake them off by pressing left/right repeatedly. Dies in 1 hit.
  2. Drill Eggman – Just drives along the ground at a steady pace, then goes back the other way. Dies in 3 hits.
  3. Flying Eggman – These enemies fly overhead and drop fire every so often, while swooping down as well. Annoying to dodge, dies in 3 hits.

To earn this trophy however, you need to have all 8 enemies on screen at once without killing any (damaging them is ok though)! It is quite difficult to do and you will waste a lot of lives doing this, there is no guaranteed way to get the trophy.

It is a bit luck based in terms of which enemies spawn.

I find the easiest to dodge are the Drill enemies. The Amy ones can cause a lot of frustration as well, so it does take a bit of luck to get the right combination that helps you succeed!

I did the trophy with Sonic on my first run, then again with Super Sonic as seen in this video:

[ame]

[/ame]

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/4827/794.jpg Professional Hedgehog (B)

That elusive perfect run, only a professional can achieve

This trophy is earned on Titanic Monarch Zone Act 1.

This trophy requires you to beat the first act of the final level without taking a single hit! This includes losing a Shield. Even though you aren't actually taking damage when it breaks, it still counts as a hit on you.

However, if you use Super Sonic/Tails/Knuckles, it’s a breeze!

In order to use a Super character, you must have all Chaos Emeralds and you must also play in Mania Mode (as Time Trial Mode doesn’t allow Supers).

The best thing to do is take the level really slow at first. There’s really only 1 part near the beginning that can hurt you, and that’s the electrified wires that run up and down. If you make it past this part, the next little bit has almost no hazards or enemies.

After running around a bit and using the purple black holes to launch yourself upwards, you’ll see the first pig enemy on a flat landing. You should have around 60-80 rings at this point, and this is where you will activate your Super power (press jump twice). Be warned that if Sonic has a Shield equipped, you cannot use Super Sonic, so don’t pick up the Shield near the beginning! Tails/Knuckles are unaffected as they can use the Super power even if they have Shields on.

Update: The 1.03 patch allows you to use Super characters by pressing :triangle: once you have 50 rings, so you can now activate the ability with a Shield equipped!

From this point you can rush through as fast as you want and nothing will stop you except for one area…

There will be a small section where a single long platform with spikes will move up and down. You need to take this part extremely slowly, as there are a few spots where you can get crushed by the spikes and die immediately (happened to me many times)!

After passing that part, you’re free to move as fast as possible with no repercussions!

Since you’ll be in Mania Mode, you will also have to fight the boss, but with Super Sonic, you can just keep jumping into him until he dies, so you shouldn’t need to worry.

Once the level is done and you did so without taking damage, the trophy will pop!

I should note that if you do take damage, you cannot press “Restart Game” from the pause menu. You must quit the game and reselect the final level through level select, or else the game will still think you’ve taken damage. Also when riding the railcars, even though Sonic makes a hurt animation when they stop, you don’t actually take damage so this is ok!

Here is my run through the level if you need a visual guide:

Ok, people can post now :)

I think the guide is pretty much done. I just need to fix some formatting issues that arise from doing the whole copy/paste from Microsoft Word, but the content is there :)

Hope the Youtube guides help! I rarely use video guides, but I felt for a game like this some might be needed!

You can get Triple Trouble in Mean Bean mode too. I did it that way because Robotnik kept losing before I could get a 3X combo. In full disclosure I suck at setting up combos at this type of game, but Robotnik's even worse because he just randomly loses even when I'm trying NOT to score bunches.

Ah I assumed it was the case but didn't know for sure! I'll add that note to the guide and give you credit for it, thanks! :D

Yeah the fight was made way easier than the old game itself. Normally in the old game, you don't do any damage to the enemy by destroying just 1 colour, but in this game he takes damage from everything :p

BTW do you remember when Mean Bean Mode is unlocked? Is it right after that boss fight?

I know I had unlocked it sometime between starting a new game and quitting after Mirage Saloon, so it could be anywhere during those levels  It makes the most sense to be unlocked after Chemical Plant though!

I wish that fight was more difficult. As a long time Puyo player I was really disappointed.

For me, Mean Bean unlocked after collecting so many medallions.

Glad I'm not the only one. But I know one of my online friends had a lot of trouble on the boss fight, so I guess we were just lucky that we've played Puyo before :D By the way, I'm sure you've probably played it already, but check out Puyo Puyo Tetris on PS4 if you haven't already!

Pure nostalgia!

As for it being unlocked by earning medallions, you could be right. I had done like 20+ Gold medals and around 3-5 Silver by the time I got to Mirage Saloon, so it is entirely possible that this is the case.

Might have to test some things on an alt account.

Looking forward to playing this, when it's gone on sale as I keep getting stung buying digital only games at high price. So deffo be using the guide!

Also This game has been out for a month now? Why is it still in the upcoming games section?

You'll really like it, it's fantastic! As for your other question, the staff is really behind on moving all the new games out of that section. There's a list about 20 posts long on things that need to be fixed and forums to be added, so hopefully they'll get on that soon!

I've platinum'd that game. So I that's how I was in good form for that boss.

Good stuff! I still have my Sega Genesis and I occasionally go on it to play Mean Bean! But like you, I had also done Puyo Puyo Tetris recently, so it was super easy for me too :D

Thanks for the great guide. It really helped me out! By the way, found a video that shows how to do the Collect 'Em All trophy really easily using Tails and debug mode. I confirmed it works as I just got the trophy through this method. May want to add it to the guide as it completely negates the difficulty of one of the hardest trophies.

Not that the video isn't helpful, but I already have my own video there and I'd rather use that :p

I'm trying to get my Youtube page some more views (only created it in January so it's not a very popular page yet), and if it wasn't for a trophy that I had already made a video for, I'd consider adding it. But since I already have a video for the trophy, too bad :p

Thanks for the guide! It was nice playing through a good Sonic game again, although I do have to say I was a bit sad at the omission of Ice Cap Zone (or a snowboarding level in general) - but hey, gotta save something for the sequel, right?

The only thing I would mention is that the Boat Enthusiast trophy did not pop on my first playthrough on Mania mode - I'm not sure if special stages or deaths affect it, but I did hit all 4 boats (and rode them all the way through, too) and the trophy didn't pop. I just did it in Time Trial mode, so no big deal, but it may be worth noting just in case someone else runs into that same scenario.

I wish they would have had an Ice Cap/snowboarding section as well, but I think Press Garden Act 2 is the closest in terms of scenery :p

Thanks for the advice for Boat Enthusiast, I'll make a note. I just read on PSNP that apparently it's semi-glitched, but nothing a quick run through can't solve! I didn't have any issues myself, nor did my brother when he played, but I did get the trophy on my 3rd boat.

Also noticed that someone gave that video a dislike, was my first ever dislike on YT, so it made me a bit sad :(

After the recent Plus/Encore Mode patch, star posts now remain collected after exiting the bonus stage. So they can't be recollected, making the old Green Hill Zone video/trick not work any more. You can still exit the stage and start it over again, though.

Thanks for the advice! I haven't got around to playing the Plus edition yet even though I bought it Day 1 :p I removed all the old exploits since they are no longer valid.

Thanks for the guide, some good tips/videos :)

Got King of speed in 1:01 though :p

Thanks! :D

How did that happen? I wonder if the actual time to beat is like 1:05 or something like that? Everyone always said it wouldn't unlock unless it was under a minute. Guess that's not the case then. :p

Hope you enjoyed the game though, one of my favourites!

Dunno, probably :p

And yeah I really enjoyed it, some great memories replaying famous levels from the classic Sonic games :D

i picked sonic and tails for mania mode. if there any way to just play as sonic without starting a whole new save??

I don’t think so, I chose Sonic because the guide said but I should have been Knuckles for more opportunities at chaos emeralds. It should be updated
