Subject 13 ~ Trophy Walkthrough

Subject 13 is a short puzzle/adventure game and while generally it's fairly easy, the back half of the game is when the puzzles start going off the rails and the puzzles in Chapter 4 are downright infuriating.

 

I have written this walkthrough to help you get through it but you're still going to need some luck to get through the final (timed and randomized) puzzle.

 

Following this walkthrough will net you all the trophies, including those for the collectibles.

Prologue/Tutorial

Back out of the monitor (:circle:)

CHAPTER 1

 

Pod Room

Walk to the computer monitor at the bottom right

To the right of the monitor is a testimony – pick it up and read it (You know everything 1/27) – So, what is it?(B) unlocked

Interact with stool to the left

Move the camera until you see a yellow recorder – pick it up (You know everything 2/27)

Interact with envelope on stool

Open envelope – pick up card inside

Back out until you see your character again

Look at card (use the dpad to select card in inventory, press :square: to look at it)

Get key from back of card

Walk to the door at the back right – interact with it

Interact with keypad on right side of door

Use key with keyhole (use the dpad, then :triangle: to move it from your inventory. Move it to the keyhole and press :triangle: again)

Turn the key

Exhaust dialogue.

 

The aim of the puzzle is to play a LOSING game of tic-tac-toe. Fill in six squares and as long as there are no lines, you will be fine. If you mess up, you will not be penalized; just try again.

CHAPTER TWO

 

Bridge Room

Exhaust dialogue

Interact with green/grey box near starting point – rotate the camera until you can see behind it

Open the panel on the front of the box

Interact with puzzle

 

The aim of this puzzle is to have all identical symbols lined up in groups of three. You can line them up however you want horizontally or vertically. It's easiest to go for vertically. Once you've lined up a group of three, they will light up – you can still break them up if you need to in order to move pieces around.

 

Open the globe

Pick up lever

Back out until you can see your character

Walk halfway across the bridge and interact with the grating

Drag the bars as far away from the center as possible

Rotate camera around box until you see a red button

Open the button hatch and push the button

Pick up wheel and testimony (You know everything 4/27)

Back out until you can see your character

Walk to the right door on the right side of the room – interact with it

Use wheel with middle plate – open door

 

This puzzle is easy. If you rotate the camera a bit to see either inside wall, you'll see strips of color. They need to match with the shelves. Press the button on the right under the shelves to be able to move them. Drag the shelves around until they match the colors on the wall, and the cabinet below the shelves will open.

 

Pick up book

Examine book

 

You need to find two symbols. Move the book around so the title is pointing up and you're looking at the spine. Interact with the bottom/right of the spine to open it and see a symbol that kind of looks like a 13. This is the first symbol. Turn to the back of the book and interact with the bottom left corner to drag open a panel – this is the second symbol and looks like a 3 with a dash. This may not be strictly necessary but will let you know what exactly to search for on the combination locks.

 

Interact with the combination lock on the front of the book – input the two symbols (3 on left, 13 on right)

Pull down red panel to open book

Open the book and turn around the “001” so it reads “100” - this opens a panel in the spine

Interact with spine

Move box on top row to 38

Move box on bottom row to 62

Pick up testimony in book (You know everything 5/27)

Pick up socket wrench

Back out until you see your character

Interact with door just to your left

Use socket wrench with top corners of panel to access and open it

Inspect lever in your inventory – you need to realign the forks. Very simple click and rotate process.

Use lever with opened panel

Pull lever to open door – exit room

 

Storage Room

Exit up the stairs at the top right

 

Bedroom

Walk between the two bunkbeds and interact with the cabinet

Open both doors of cabinet

Open door on top left shelf for testimony (You know everything 6/27)

Open door on top right self

Move cement block – pick up swipe card

Move the camera around until you can see the top right of the cabinet – pick up helmet and get testimony (You know everything 7/27)

Back out until you can see your character

Interact with sink/mirror against wall – pick up testimony (You know everything 8/27)

Interact with the pipes below the sink

Turn the red lever so it's pointing right

Push the button above the faucet – the water should work now

Use helmet with the water while it's still on – get helmet full of water

Back out until you can see your character

Exit back to Storage Room

 

Storage Room

Interact with the left set of doors

Interact with keypad on right side of doors

 

This is another sliding puzzle, but it's not randomized this time. The solution is as follows:

Move blue down

Move red down

Move top left red all the way right

Move vertical red up (you have just made a red rectangle)

Move blue all the way left into the green piece

 

Use the swipe card with the card slot on the keypad

Pick up testimony on one of the ladder rungs (You know everything 9/27) – you'll also get the ladder

Examine ladder in inventory

Use socket wrench with yellow and black bolted area until you can't turn it any more

Move the yellow and black area until it's open

Drag ladder until it's fully extended

Back out until you can see your character

Use ladder with rightmost door

Interact with case on top of ladder

Move the camera to see the left side of the box as well as you can – there's a well-hidden testimony you'll barely be able to see. (You know everything 10/27)

Interact with sliding puzzle on case

 

This is similar to the one you did on the left door – you want to get the symbol on the blue block into the green square. Once again, this is not randomized. The solution is as follows:

Move rightmost red up

Move horizontal red right

Move blue all the way down

Move both vertical red blocks all the way left

Move horizontal red all the way up

Move blue right and up

Examine artifact in box

Interact with metal thing to the right of the stairs to the bedroom

Thankfully, this is another non-randomized puzzle. The solution is as follows:

Move all horizontal red left of the blue bar to the left

Move blue all the way down

Move vertical red right of blue to the right

Move blue into the opening you just made (the right side of the puzzle area should now be completely filled with blocks)

Move three horizontal red blocks on left to the right

Vertical red all the way down

Top horizontal reds (not the one in the top right) all the way left

You should now be able to move a horizontal block one space right (under blue) and another left (next to blue) in order to make an opening to move blue into

 

Pick up artifact

Examine artifact in inventory

Use other artifact with it

Rotate them until you can pull the two together

Back out until you can see your character

Exit left to bridge room

 

Bridge Room

Interact with red light

Experiment Room

Look at steaming pipes on left. There is a testimony behind the tubes (You know everything 12/27)

Interact with woman on left side of room – exhaust conversation

You want all of the gages on the console to be red. Flip them in order, left to right but DO NOT flip the leftmost one.

Interact with new puzzle

 

This one is random. It's a game of Blackout/Lights Out. You want all the lights to be lit. Use this solver (A Lights Out Puzzle with Solver) to help you out if you need it.

 

Interact with console again

Move the camera to the right side of the console so you can see the green buttons

Interact with this part of the console

Pick up prism – also get testimony (You know everything 13/27)

Back out until you can see your character

Walk to the bottom of the screen

Use prism with square framework

 

You now need to use the three reflectors in the center of the room to bounce the laser light into the cube. You can move the reflector faces up and down, change its heights then turn them at the base. You must interact with each reflector before you can freely move them.

 

Interact with the thing the laser just lit up

Use socket wrench to open this projector box

There's a testimony under the gears (You know everything 14/27) – Informed Subject (B) unlocked

 

The aim of this puzzle is to rotate the gears to match the image painted on the wall. Start with the leftmost gear and align the outer ring (it will move all three rings). Pay attention to the opening in the outer ring – it needs to be at the bottom of the symbol. Use the middle gear to align the innermost ring (it will move the middle and inner ring). Finally, use the rightmost gear to align the middle ring.

CHAPTER THREE

 

Outside Bunker

There is a testimony in front of the rock at the bottom left corner (You know everything (15/27)

Interact with wrecked boat just above the rock

Back out once so you can see the area surrounding the boat

Interact with mushroom on left tree

Pick up mushroom

Examine jar in inventory – turn it upside down, then press :cross: on it a few times until Subject 13 says it should be okay. You can now unscrew the lid.

Interact with the pitcher plant to the left of the bunker door

 

This is a random puzzle. Ultimately what you want to do is get all of the pitcher plants open. There is a certain order you must open the smaller pitcher plants (there are eight in total). If you've opened the right one, it will stay open once you move your cursor away from it. If you open the wrong one, the puzzle will reset (but the order you've discovered will remain the same). It's entirely trial and error. Eventually, you will be able to open the big brown pitcher.

Take the path under the trees between the path leading out at the top of the screen and the pitcher plant

 

Brambles

Move camera until you see a smaller rock on the left

Move rock – pick up disc

Very simple. Just turn the dials until you can read the words. None of the dials control other dials, so you don't have to worry about any specific order. (Again, may not be necessary, but I wanted to make sure you didn't skip any puzzles)

 

Inspect vanity case – interact with combo lock

Combination is 6237 (the colors you revealed on the disc, numbered in rainbow order)

This one is a more complicated sliding puzzle. Thankfully, it's not random. The solution is as follows:

Move the jar over the mushroom until you see a beam of light on the mushroom. After a few seconds, the mushroom will catch fire

Use flaming mushroom with brambles

Once the fire goes out, pick up chiles (you may need to try this more than once)

Examine perfume bottle in inventory

Open perfume bottle

Use chiles with perfume bottle – get pepper bomb

Back out until you can see your character

Follow the path up the hill (the exit button will activate near the bottom of the hill)

 

Cabin Area

Walk right to the water, then up the beach until you can interact with the pillar of stones

 

I think this puzzle is random, at least with the starting position. You want to rotate the discs so the lines line up. When you get further down the pillar, not all of the lines will line up, so aim to line up as many as possible. Start from the top and work your way to the bottom, as each disc will rotate the one(s) above it. Honestly, this is a bad puzzle. Here is a picture of the puzzle solved, with the most unique line configurations I was able to find to try to help you out. Notice that the picture doesn't have the snake head facing directly forward (it's a bit to the right):

Right Cabin

Click on the picture frame on the right leaning against the box to turn it over

The aim of this puzzle is to have the symbols matching symbols on the dial next to it in each direction. I THINK this is the same in every game. Here is a picture of the solution in my game (if it's not the same in yours, this will at least give you an idea as to what you need to do)

Exit this cabin and enter the middle cabin

 

Middle Cabin

Examine flashlight – move red button to turn it on

Back out once – you will automatically be using the flashlight to light the room

Look left to see pipe organ

Interact with pipe organ

 

This is another trial and error puzzle. You want all of the pipes to be at the same level – the gold tops of the pipes need to be just under the top gold bar. Do not try to line anything up with the far right hole – it's uneven and will just mess you up. Just use it to hold bars while you figure out the rest of the puzzle.

 

Pick up testimony in area you just opened (You know everything 19/27)

Interact with gold ball on the right of the organ to get a view of the side of it and the area you just opened

Turn the wheel until you are moved to the left side of the organ

Pick up notebook

Pick up boolean key code

Back out once

Look right to trunk

Examine boolean key in inventory – turn it until you can look at the key part of it. Take note of the shapes.

Interact with trunk, then interact with lock on trunk

 

You need to move the three dials on the trunk lock to fit the key. Each dial moves independently of each other, so you don't need to worry about the puzzle becoming more complex. Remember that you need to align the discs BACKWARDS, as it's a lock to fit the key view you're given. Again, this is trial and error as I'm pretty sure the key configuration is random. Just in case it isn't (let me know), here is the picture of the lock in my game. You will know you've set it right when the game actually gives you the option to use the key instead of just continuing to say "hold :cross: to turn".

CHAPTER FOUR

 

Outside Temple

 

Walk past monkey statue and interact with panel on right side of staircase leading to temple

Move camera until the stairs are at the bottom of the screen and you can look on top of the panel – you should see a testimony on the rocks on the right (You know everything 23/27)

Interact with panel again to access a puzzle

 

This is the same as the match three puzzle back in Chapter One, except this time it's a match four. If possible, try to line up one group vertically and another horizontally either at the top or bottom of it to make the playing field a little smaller.

Pick up eye – get testimony (You know everything 24/27)

Back out until you can see your character

 

You're supposed to use this eye (crystal) to look at the gold plates scattered around outside the tomb but honestly, the puzzle is a pain in the ass and thankfully the answer is the same every time so I'm just going to skip all the steps. If you want to solve it yourself, you need to be taking notes as to the Mayan numbers on these plates and use the notebook you got in the last chapter to convert them. These numbers play into the puzzle on the monkey statue.

 

Interact with the tomb area to the left of the monkey statue

A linear line puzzle will appear. Move the little square from one end to the other.

Monkey Puzzle

Move bottom dial (the bigger needle) to the space in between two lines and one line with three dots

Move top dial (the smaller needle) to the space in between three lines with three dots and three lines with one dot

Use crank handle with see no evil monkey

Turn the crank until the monkey rises

Interact with speak no evil monkey

Examine crank handle

Big needle: space between four dots and two dots

Small needle: space between line with dot and line with three dots

Inside Temple

BACK UP YOUR SAVE

Walk past cubes in middle of room to find the last testimony - (You know everything 27/27) - You know everything (B) unlocked

Interact with the artifact in the center of screen

 

The aim of this puzzle is to raise the pieces to form a single cube. This doesn't seem to be randomized. The sequence is – base (you need to pixel hunt; it's a VERY well camouflaged grey piece), pink, yellow, green

 

Use the eye (crystal) on the top of the cube.

 

This is the “fun” part. You need to solve this awful minesweeper puzzle in 20 minutes or less to unlock Cold-blooded Subject(B). As far as I can tell, the timer begins when you put the eye on top of the cube, and I THINK the timer stops (but does not reset) whenever you mess up and have to reinsert the eye. You'll need to translate the numbers on the board, as they're all presented in Mayan numbers (but they don't seem to go higher than four, so just count the number of dots).

 

If you hit a mine, the puzzle will disappear and you'll have to pick up and reinsert the eye to start it over. Any mines you found, or ones you've manually tagged, will still show up on the puzzle, but not any of the other squares you've uncovered. Hold :l2: and :cross: to manually mark squares. All of the squares need to be filled in for the puzzle to finish (the eye will disappear and the puzzle will start spinning). Good luck (this is why I had you back up your save).

 

You may want to just do this puzzle via trial and error without worrying about the time limit just to get the rest of the game's trophies, then reload your backed up save and start working on the timed version (which will be different; you can't cheese this by saving the same version of the puzzle and reloading the save). This way, you will have the hint system at your disposal to use without worrying about negating The best Subject (S).

I simply CANNOT get this chest to open. I read on PC steam version that it may be bugged. The key configuration isn't random, from what I've read online. When I place the tumblers into the Y configuration, the "Use Item Here" option displays, but when I use the key, my character just continually says "It doesn't go in." I've tried exiting and reloading... NOTHING WORKS. I'm so close to the end. Any suggestions??

Hi there, I've just finished the game on Xbox and wanted to share my method for the minesweeper puzzle. It's actually not my own idea, it came from TheWelshHunt's guides, but for whatever reason it doesn't seem to have been republished anywhere despite being by far the easiest way of guaranteeing the achievement/trophy.

 

It's very simple, and also very tedious, but it's a lot less frustrating than trying to play for real if you're not savvy with minesweeper. Basically, all you need to do is click every box from every row, triggering every mine until all rows have been covered, at which point you can just click around at all the remaining squares until it's cleared. It takes a lot longer than 20 minutes in real time, but the in-game timer pauses each time a mine is triggered and restarts when the grid reappears, so there's plenty of time to spare. I even missed a mine the first time around and therefore had to restart my clearing phase, then spent about 2-3 minutes at the end looking around for the last couple of squares, and I still got the achievement.
