Tolkienesque Guide

This guide will cover the 'Tolkienesque' trophy. This is the most time consuming trophy of the game. You have to unlock every entry in the 'Library' section of the game. You can check your progress while in the 'Library' or in the 'Trophies' tab of the 'Stats' section. There are a few things you need to know about this trophy:

  • Except for a couple of entries, just meeting the enemy, boss or event is enough to unlock its entry so you don't need to kill/survive it.
  • You will need an extra controller if you're playing the PS3 version.
  • The 1.02 patch greatly reduced the time needed to level up ranks but also added several enemies, bosses and events and they are all needed for this trophy. I have put an asterisk (*) next to the patched in entries.
  • The paid DLC 'Retro Mode' also adds an entry for the Library but it is not mandatory and is unlocked when installed.
  • If the trophy doesn't pop when you 100% complete the Library, play another round and it will unlock at the end of it.

You will find all the entries below. They're listed in the same order as they appear in the Library. I put a screenshot for most entries but since the game can get quite hectic, I've tried to point out the appropriate element with red arrows (except for some events).

http://i.imgur.com/aTvoG6u.jpg

Blackhole:

During a Blackhole event, the screen will turn red and you will hear an air raid siren during the whole event. The most noticeable characteristic of this kind of events is the unusual enemies you can met only in Blackholes such as Dinosaur skulls firing lasers from their mouths or Ninjas if you have the patch installed.

http://i.imgur.com/piG2vmK.jpg

Dinosaur:

Encountered only during Blackhole events. Big dinosaurs skull with no specific movement pattern. Fires lasers from its mouth. Laser thickness depends on the skull size.

http://i.imgur.com/pRzmRer.jpg

Frozen:

Your ship will be frozen if you get in the radius of the explosion made by a Freezer enemy. You are vulnerable in this state since your shield is down, you can't drill and your shots don't get through the ice. Keep firing to get out of this state as fast as you can.

You need an extra controller. Set it to player 2, 3 or 4 and start a round. Let one of your ships die and it will turn into a ghostship.

http://i.imgur.com/3x0mbkZ.jpg

Spin:

You activate the Spin Attack by holding the drill button (:cross: or :r1:(PS3)/:vitar:(Vita)). It creates a vortex around your ship that can easily destroy basic enemies. It lasts as long as you hold the drill but you cannot shoot while it is active and you are not invincible while using it. Lastly, you only get four of those per round in most modes.

http://i.imgur.com/kZ7KHZn.jpg

A phonebox:

This is a reference to the TV series "Doctor Who". Once in a while, you will see a tiny blue phonebox flying through the screen.

- Light blue arrow pattern and 'Laser Spread' written on it: Makes your laser less accurate but you can cover a wider area with less aiming.

- Red arrow pattern and 'Laser Speed' written on it: Makes your laser travel the screen faster.

- Yellow cross pattern and 'Multi' written on it: Increases your score multiplier.

- Purple arrow pattern and 'Ship Speed' written on it: Increases your ship movement speed.

http://i.imgur.com/Ym2BCqA.jpg

Pandora's box:

Looks like a light blue crate. Turns more and more red as you shoot at it. If destroyed, you will be stuck with small lasers for a bit.

http://i.imgur.com/kgkG8h2.jpg

Minefield*:

Special event where you have to get through several columns of orange and purple round enemies moving up and down. The purple ones are invincible and the orange ones are pretty resistant. You can wait to pass above or below the columns or you make your way through by shooting the orange enemies. Some Arrow enemies will also spawn during the event.

http://i.imgur.com/hqwrVtR.jpg

Portals*:

Two pairs of coloured rings (i.e. four rings). Going into a portal will teleport you to the other one of the same colour.

http://i.imgur.com/5Mu3KoJ.jpg

Parallel cascade*:

Similar to the Hell cascade event but all enemies are Invicibads (pure white and invincible). It can also unlock Pacifism Mode if you haven't unlocked it already and you survive the event. However, it doesn't count as a Spike Cascade event entry in the Library.

http://i.imgur.com/8qDlLDT.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/COZzl9P.jpg

Encountered only during Blackhole events. Look like human limbs. Can spawn either as an arm, a leg or a head. No specific movement pattern and the arm and leg don't do anything. However, the head fires lasers from its mouth.

http://i.imgur.com/v7CzHuu.jpg

Ghostship*:

Despite having the same name as the other entry, this is a different one. Encountered only during Blackhole events. It just looks like a cartoon ghost. No specific movement pattern but it can disappear and reappear.

http://i.imgur.com/WeYinjd.jpg

Ninjas*:

Encountered only during Blackhole events. Blue ninja idle at first but can home in on your ship if not destroyed in time.

Ultra master:

Master master:

Reach a rank score of 39,600 to unlock this entry. Not to be confused with the normal score you get in-game, you can see this one next to your rank in the 'Stats' section of the game.

I do not know the exact formula for the rank score, but it is related to your performances. Getting a huge normal score will raise your rank score by a decent amount. You will need to grind a lot in Classic Mode for the Check out my shop trophy so chances are you will make some good progress or even reach this rank while grinding.

I realise the odds of me getting an answer are slim, but what do you have to do to get this phonebox to appear? I've played 300+ games, got everything else, no idea about this one.

Absolutely no idea. Most of the entries are random. I got lucky and saw one during the tutorial when I was doing the guide.

My patience is considerably thinner than it was when I last posted. Was that the only time you saw one? I have this horrible feeling that it's linked to the amount of games you've played.

I had to start a fresh save file to get screenshots from the tutorial but I've seen it several times on it and on my main save.

I had to juggle between patched and unpatched a lot for this guide, mostly for the rank score and new stuff added with the patch. Again, I've seen the phonebox plenty of times on both patched and unpatched. Sorry I can't help more with that. :(

Hey it's not your fault they included a seemingly completely random thing that I'm waiting on while nobody else is

I think I'll get to ~500 plays then delete the patch to go for the King of the Skies trophy. If the phonebox is completely random then I'm not going to lose anything and even if I get King of the Skies before I see the phonebox I can download the patch again and probably still end up finishing it quicker than I'm going to if I carry on like this.

Fresh update: After what must have been 30+ hours and ~450 plays across all modes I gave up and deleted the patch to play and give King of the Skies a shot. I've played 13 times since (with a record of two boss kills) and, remarkably, the phonebox has appeared in the library. I never even saw the fucking thing or knew it was there. Now to get these bosses out of the way and finish this thing as soon as possible.
