So I got up and turned on the ps3 to continue trophy hunting. Don't know if resetting the ps3/game is what did it but I got it first try. I noticed that I wasn't getting the critical message on screen, therefore all my attempts were just clean hits. I re-adjusted my positioning and pulled it off.
