Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition – Boss Guide (Dante Must Die)

I made this guide to help players in DMC4 who needs help in defeating all bosses in the game. This guide features all bosses in Dante Must Die difficulty. In DMD mode, all bosses except Dante goes into Devil Trigger state when they have 10% health remaining. They take lesser damage and hit harder. All your items and skill upgrades carry over in DMD so I recommend that you bring lots of Vital Stars and Devil Stars if needed.

 

I know a lot of people will start new threads about "How do I beat (insert boss here)?" so it would be nice if we can point out this Guide to them. If I made any mistakes on this Guide, then please let me know.

 

Please refer to this list of moveset for the terms I used in video playthrough below.

 

Nero’s moveset:

-When firing the Blue Rose in Devil Trigger state, you'll also be able to shoot some small swords.

-If you're having trouble doing this, just mash :l1: repeatedly once the first hit connects.

 

Sword Master (Lucifer)

Discipline: Press the :ls: in any direction and press :circle:.

Climax: Hold :r1: and press Back on the :ls: + :circle:.

-This move will reposition and deployed blades around you.

Bondage: Hold :r1: and press Forward on the :ls: + :circle:.

-This will reposition the blades around an enemy instead.

 

Gunslinger (Ebony & Ivory)

Twosome Time: Press :circle: and use :ls: to fire at enemies.

Rain Storm: (in mid-air) Press :circle:.

Honeycomb Fire: After performing Twosome Time, let go of :ls: and tap :circle: repeatedly.

 

Gunslinger (Coyote-A)

Fireworks: Press :circle:.

Fireworks Air: (in mid-air) Press :circle:.

Backslide: Hold :r1: and press Back on the :ls: + :circle:.

Gun Stinger: Hold :r1: and press Forward on the :ls: + :circle:.

 

Gunslinger (Pandora)

PF594 Argument: Press :circle: when in Gunslinger and Pandora equipped and some of the Disaster Gauge filled. Press :circle: to unleash the special attack, and :square: to unleash regular attacks.

-You need to have around half of the Disaster Gauge filled to unleash the :circle: attack. With a full gauge you can do it twice, depending on how much you've upgraded Gunslinger.

PF422 Grief: Hold :r1: and press Back on the :ls: + :circle:.

PF666 Omen: Hold :r1: and press Forward on the :ls: + :circle:.

 

Trickster (Highly recommended if you are new to this game).

Dash: Press :circle:.

Sky Star: (in mid-air) Press :circle:.

Mustang: Hold :circle: while dashing.

-If you collide with an enemy you'll jump on top of them.

Flipper: Hold :circle: after being knocked down (a.k.a. Tech Rolling in Street Fighter games).

Air Trick: Hold :r1: and press Forward on :ls: + :circle:.

-You'll appear above an enemy instantly. Perhaps the only really cool move in this style.

 

Royal Guard (Recommended for advanced players only).

Block: Press :circle:.

-Holding :circle: will minimize damage slightly and charge the gauge slightly.

Air Block: (in mid-air) Press :circle:.

Royal Block: Press :circle: at the exact moment of enemy attack.

-Requires precise timing and will charge the gauge more.

Release: Hold :r1: and press Forward on the :ls: + :circle:.

-This move will release the power you've stored in the gauge. It can also remove Blitz's electricity if the gauge is full.

Air Release: (in mid-air) Hold :r1: and press Forward on the Left Analog Stick + :circle:.

Royal Release: Perform a Release at the exact moment of enemy attack.

Dreadnaught: Hold :r1: and press Back on the :ls: + :circle:.

 

My key mapping for Nero (recommended so you can do Lv 3 charge shots + perform combos + perform Exceed at the same time)

:square: - Devil Trigger

:triangle: - Melee Attack

:circle: - Devil Bringer

:l1: - Gun Attack

:r1: - Lock On

:l2: - Exceed

:r2: - Taunt/Kick while running

NOTE: These may not be the best strategies against all bosses but they work best for me so please, do not criticize my work. I’m not really good in DMC games. I only did my best in this guide to help those people who are having trouble in this game.

 

If you have bought the Super Character DLC pack, you may refer to the alternate strategy videos below. Remember, dodging is the key to beating these bosses.

 

Dante (First Encounter)

 

While jumping near Dante, wait for him to perform a move then use a snatch to bring him into the air. When Dante is pulled in the air after a snatch, slash him a few times then Buster him or unleash a level 3 charge blast.

 

Fire off Blue Rose while stepping toward Dante and he will continue to fire while Nero steps close to him. Quickly perform a Buster on him while he tries to recover from firing, this works better on lower difficulties.

 

Constantly charge a level 3 charge blast and unleash it whenever Dante makes any sort of mistake (pauses during an attack) to hit him instantly. This is helpful for when you can't pull him into the air with a snatch.

 

Berial (Nero)

 

A level 3 charge blast can be used from a distance to wear him down without the need of getting close to him.

 

Use constant Devil Triggered slashes from up close to extinguish his flame shield. Use air slashes or ground slashes. Make sure that you have practices rolling through his attacks if you choose to attack with ground slashes.

 

When his flames are extinguished, jump and Buster his head then Buster his head while on the ground after the first Buster grab. Devil Trigger before both Busters and fill him full of Summoned Swords by tapping :square:

 

Use Hellbounds (grapples) to get in the back of his torso then slash at him.

 

His Turning Slash is one of the most predictable and easy to dodge attacks in his arsenal so watch for it and roll when he does it, he will always use this to turn. This move has the longest animation. He is open for a Maximum Bet if he misses your character.

 

Bael (Nero)

 

Slash at the icicles on his back to stun him. Slash at him while Devil Triggered to stun him quicker. Buster his tongue while he is stunned - Devil Trigger then use Summoned Swords during the Buster.

 

Blast Dagon with a level 3 charge blast as he blends into the background.

 

Slash at the Rusalka then Buster one when it is stunned to pull Dagon out of hiding. Fire a level 3 charge blast at a Rusalka that tries to lunge at Nero with a freeze lunge or snatch it at that time and perform a Buster. If he freezes, don't stand in front of him since he will lunge at Nero with his mouth open.

 

Echidna (Nero)

 

Buster her while she is stunned, Buster her egg sac (Roulette Spin a few times first) and Buster her while she glows and tries to lunge toward Nero. Devil Trigger and shoot Summoned Swords and also Rev up the blade when Nero plunges his Red Queen into her during a Buster animation.

 

Use Roulette Spins to attack her while in the air.

 

Use Red Queen Combo C on her while she is in the ground then prepare to jump from her hair tentacle slap. Jump straight into the air while near her and fire down at her to avoid her tentacles as they try to slap you from the ground.

 

A level 3 charge blast will stop any of her lunges from the background and damage her while she flies in the background.

 

Agnus (Nero)

 

Snatch a Gladius then Buster the enemy sword as you target the window to throw it toward the window and damage it.

 

A level 3 charge blast will instantly destroy a Gladius while a level 1 and 2 charge blast will instantly knock it down. Keep this in mind while trying to avoid their spinning attacks.

 

Step onto the middle platform whenever the floor electrifies then have a charge blast ready for any Gladius that tries to spin toward Nero.

 

This boss is really easy. I didn't include a video because getting to him is harder. You have to fight Bael over and over again whenever the dice keeps falling in the wrong spot.

 

Angelo Credo (Nero)

 

Unleash constant level 3 charge blasts with Blue Rose. The damage is decent and this will put a constant hurt on him throughout the battle.

 

Wait for him to attack or attack him then dodge his slashes and perform a High Roller to bring him into the air then Buster him after a few slashes to damage him and his shield.

 

Learn the timing for grabbing his javelin with a Buster (the Devil Bringer must rise as the javelin is about to hit Nero) then aim carefully and toss the javelin back. The best timing for this make a double jump at normal speed the moment you see his javelin then press Buster at the peak of your jump.

 

Angelo Agnus (Nero)

 

Grab Gladius swords and Basilisks then throw/shoot fireballs at him - for Basilisks, try to jump in the air, snatch one, then Buster it.

 

A Devil Trigger will instantly break out of his life siphon grab.

 

Jump and attack him whenever he rushes toward the middle for his big life siphon to cancel it.

 

Buster him whenever he is stunned. Devil Trigger before the Buster then fill him full of Summoned Swords during the Buster.

 

Dante (Second Encounter)

 

Same strategy from the first encounter works here but Dante has a chance to dodge your snatch. He usually rolls to the side and follows up with a Stinger. Make sure that you roll or jump out of the way and snatch him again while he is doing the Stinger move.

 

Whenever he takes out his Pandora briefcase to perform an Omen, be sure to snatch him or unleash a level 3 charge blast or this move will instantly hit Nero.

 

When he is in Royal Guard style, keep your distance out of fear of a Just Release. A Just Release on is extremely damaging. He falls victim to a Buster more easily while in Royal Guard style but his Just Release can be so extremely unexpected while Nero attacks.

 

Sanctus (Nero)

 

Intentionally wait for him to perform his flame current or electrified floor attack then jump toward him and attack him while he is performing the move.

 

Practice the precise Buster moment for the Savior punch since knowing the precise timing is about the only way to hit him when he is low in life. Turning off Turbo Mode in options menu is highly recommended to help you with the timing.

 

You will fight these bosses again (except Dante, Credo and Sanctus) on Mission 19 as Nero and there's a trick on rolling the dice on that mission. Just wait for the desired number to be facing up on the dice then buster it and you will get the dice roll with that number, for example: The dice shows number 1 before number 4. Buster the dice immediately after number 1 is facing up and you should hit the dice when number 4 is facing up. This method also works on Mission 6.

Echidna (Dante)

 

Lucifer's Pin-Up and Distorted Real Impacts work extremely well while she is burrowed into the ground. I have to recommend Lucifer's Pin-Up here over the Real Impact though since the Real Impact will not hit her fully while the Pin-Up will drown her with energy swords that can be detonated through an Ecstasy while she flies in the background.

 

Aerial Raves mixed with Aerial Rave V's (switch to Dark Slayer in mid-air) are some of the best ways to hit her while she is propped up on her tail or exposing her egg sac overhead.

 

A direct hit with Pandora's Epidemic will knock her directly out of her diving attacks. It is best to wait until she flies straight toward your character then shoot her with and Epidemic blast.

 

Dagon (Dante)

 

Both Lucifer's Pin-Up and Real Impact will completely annihilate Dagon from up close. Devil Trigger or Distort the move for some incredible damage.

 

Jumping Aerial Raves mixed with Aerial Rave V's (Dark Slayer) can destroy his ice pillars rather quickly. Jump next to him and perform an Aerial Rave then quickly switch to while falling.

 

Since Dagon is so big, Coyote-A blasts damage him more than normal since the entire spread of gunfire hits him.

 

Berial (Dante)

 

Distorted Real Impacts will extinguish his flames extremely quickly if you can get them off without him interrupting them with an attack. The best time to get off a Real Impact is at the beginning of the battle. Run directly up to his front side then perform the Real Impact while he walks.

 

His turning slash is the easiest close attack to roll through so stay close to either of his sides while hitting him with melee attacks and prepare to dodge his blade as he turns around. This move has the longest animation. He is open for a Real Impact if he misses your character.

 

Pandora's Revenge can be used from a distance to take off some fair damage. This will also knock him out of most moves that he tries to perform. It is easier to hit him with Pandora's Revenge at the beginning of the battle since he is less enraged.

 

Once the Disaster Gauge of Pandora is filled enough, jump into the air and perform an Argument then launch several missiles at Berial to damage him badly.

 

Angelo Agnus (Dante)

 

Use Distorted Real Impacts to hit Agnus while he is flying low to the ground and attempting to charge one his moves or recovering from a move.

 

Jump and slash at the Gladius swords with Rebellion when they first form above him to try to destroy them right then or you can use this time to perform a Real Impact.

 

Switch to Rebellion and perform constant Aerial Raves whenever he moves toward the centre of the area in order to perform his big life siphon attack. You can also mix in some Aerial Rave V's with Dark Slayer while performing a Rebellion Aerial Rave.

 

Dark Slayers' Slash Dimension can be helpful for defeating the grouped Gladius and Basilisks enemies during this battle.

 

The Savior (Dante)

 

Use Epidemic, Hatred, Ebony & Ivory or Coyote-A gunfire to destroy his blue stones after stunning him with a cannon or a laser.

 

Hit him from a distance with Drives and Over Drives. The energy waves and Pandora Revenge can cancel his moves if timed well.

 

While jumping in between platforms stop to shoot him with Ebony & Ivory gunfire while switched over to Gunslinger style and this will help to damage him a bit.

 

When he is finally stunned, use the blue seal to leap over to him and hit his chest blue stone with Devil Trigged Lucifer Pin-Ups or Real Impacts.

 

Sanctus Diabolica (Nero)

 

Use Roulette Spins or Devil Triggered air slashes to quickly get rid of his shields - mainly his first sphere shield.

 

Intentionally wait for him to perform his flame current or electrified floor attack then jump toward him and attack him while he is performing the move.

 

Practice the precise Buster moment for the Sparda blade lunge, because knowing the precise timing is about the only way to hit him when he is low in life.

 

When he materializes on the ground jump away to dodge his Sparda and retaliate with a Streak to remove his shield. This is the fastest and safest way to remove his shield.

Use melee attacks on the lures and charged shots on Bael. Bael will only come out when the lures have already sustained heavy amount of damage or when they grab you.

 

Agnus (Window)

Just spam wireshot on any Gladius you see. Lady will automatically throw them to Agnus. Spam wireshot in mid-air once the floor is electrocuted.

 

Echidna

Use charged shots while avoiding all of Echidna's attacks. Use Kalina Ann charged shot on her when she starts laying eggs.

 

Credo

Lure Credo to make his combo then use Kalina Ann after he performs Helm Breaker or Stinger. This two moves have very long recovery frames. Everything else, just keep dodging.

 

Agnus

Charge Kalina Ann when Agnus is standing still. Use Lady's burst attack to avoid getting hit by his spinning blade attack.

 

Dante 2nd Encounter

Same as Dante's 1st encounter. Spam Trigger Happy until he's defeated. If he switches to Royal Guard, run towards him then jump over his head. He will use his Royal Release without any reason and switch styles. Once it happens, you can spam Trigger Happy again.

 

Sanctus

Run sideways and wait for Sanctus' projectiles. Double jump once you see him casting it then wireshot him to get closer then slash him three times in mid-air. Rinse and repeat until his shield is broken. Once his shield is broken, wireshot him until he drops then use Kalina Ann charged shot or Burst Attack to deal heavy damage on him. Use Devil Stars if needed. Rinse and repeat.

 

Sanctus Diabolica

Same as above. If he teleports on the ground, just double jump and wirehook him until he drops then use Kalina Ann or Burst Attack to deal heavy damage on him.

Pandora laser (Revenge) is the best weapon for Trish in DMD mode. This is her only weapon that can deal a huge amount of damage on bosses in DMD but it consumes three DT runes so you will need to refill it every now and then. You can always refill her DT gauge by doing Pandora Cancel on enemies and bosses.

 

Echidna

Use Pandora laser whenever she is burrowed on the ground or whenever she is laying eggs. Activate DT on the former to avoid getting staggered by her tentacles. Refill the DT gauge if needed.

 

Dagon

Use Pandora laser whenever he jumps far away and prepared to hide. Use melee attacks on his lures. Like Bael, Dagon, will only come out when his lures have taken a lot of damage or when they grab you. Refill the DT gauge if needed.

 

Berial

Use Pandora laser whenever he is far away doing nothing. Refill the DT gauge if needed.

 

Agnus

Use Pandora laser anytime he is standing still. It will obliterate any summon that comes between you and him. Activate DT when he uses his spinning blade attack to reduce damage taken. Refill the DT gauge if needed.

 

Savior

On phase 1, destroy all blue crystals in his body. Use the pedestals if needed to stun him. On phase 2, stand on the middle platform and he will come close, rising up slowly telling you to give him your best shot. Just use Pandora laser two to three times to stun him. When he is stunned, use Pandora laser on the blue crystal on his chest. It should take 2-3 shots to destroy that last crystal. Refill DT gauge if needed.
