Grim Fandango Complete Walkthrough

ClungePumper

Recommended Posts

Grim Fandango is a classic point and click adventure originally created by Tim Schafer for PC in 1995. Here it has been gloriously remastered and available for our nostalgic pleasure on the PS4.

This is a complete walkthrough guide which will cover all the trophies and allow you to get the platinum in one play through. It will be set out in a simple step by step format with side notes for any of the more complicated parts. Something to remember, is that all the dialogue trophies will only pop once the conversation has ended so don't panic when they don't appear straight after the required phrase is spoken.

Also, remember you can save your game at any point and it is worth doing so regularly just in case something goes wrong. However if you follow this guide step for step, then you will get the Platinum in one playthrough without having to repeat anything. I know this because I did it as I went through :).

It is recommended that you save before any conversation with a specific dialogue choice that pops a trophy in case there are some paths through the dialogue that lock you out from the desired option.

Year One

- As soon as the cutscene finishes, before you even move Manny, go into the options setting and turn on 'tank controls' in the movement mode. This will ensure you will get the trophy "The Right Way" (B) at the end of the game. Save your game.

- Grab the note by the window.

- Walk over to the table and take the deck of cards.

- Leave the office and walk down the hallway to Eva sitting at reception.

- Go through all of the dialogue options, eventually the option for "So what did you do in life to get stuck here?" comes up, select that and then work through the rest of the dialogue if you wish. When you finish the conversation the trophy will pop.

- Trophy: "What I did back in the fat days is none of your business. You know the rules" (B) Unlocked

[spoiler=grimf1]

- Walk round the desk and you will notice a hole punch sitting on it. Interact with it to unlock a trophy.

- Trophy: "Gets the aggressions out, doesn't it" (B) Unlocked.

[spoiler=grimf2]

- Take the left hand lift down into the car park.

- Go to the office into the very corner and knock on the door.

- Speak to Glottis and pick the "Nice Hut" option first and follow that dialogue choice until he tells you that he needs to be breathing in the fumes. Go through the rest of the dialogue choices until Glotiss gives you the work order and finish the conversation.

- Trophy: "It's like I'm not happy unless I'm breathing in the thick, black, nauseating fumes…" (B) Unlocked.

[spoiler=grimf3]

- Go back to the elevator and take it back to reception.

- Speak to Eva and ask her to get the boss to sign the work order.

- Go into the other elevator, when you get out turn left and go through the big doors at the end. You will now be outside.

- Walk around the building to the left and go into the alleyway, where you will see a rope hanging down.

- Go into the window and investigate the boss's PC.

- Change to auto response to "Ah cripes Eva, just sign it yourself will ya, I'm busy!"

- Climb back out of the window, down the rope and make your way back inside to reception.

- Speak to Eva again and ask her to get the boss to sign the work order.

- After the cutscene, save your game.

- Go up to the 3 different people in the diner and interact with them, each one will pull a different face and Manny will make a comment. This will unlock a trophy once you have interacted with them all.

- Trophy: "Scaring the living is technically against the rules, but we all do it". (B) Unlocked.

[spoiler=grimf4]

- Use your scythe on the body bag to start a cut scene.

- Once back at reception, go towards the hole punch, open up your inventory and use the deck of cards with the hole punch.

- Take the elevator opposite back down to the lobby and walk towards the big doors leading outside.

- After the big purple guy has finished moaning, head outside.

- Go to Manny's left and run towards to tents and balloons.

- Talk to the clown until you see the option "Bang!". Select it to unlock a trophy once you have finished the conversation. Do not pick the "Twist me up one of them" option as this may lock you out from the trophy.

- Trophy: "Lousy bony fingers!" (B) Unlocked.

[spoiler=grimf5]

- Ask the clown to make a cat for you.

- Put it away and speak to him again, this time ask for a dead worm. Repeat this so you have 2 dead worms plus a cat.

- Now ask the clown to make you Robert Frost.

- Go to the stall next to the clown and pick up a stick of bread.

- Head back into the lobby of the building you came out of, and enter the door on Manny's right which is now open.

- Take out one of your dead worms and use it on the red tube.

- Do the same with your other dead worm on the blue tube.

- Head back into the elevator and make your way back to Manny's office.

- Go to the back of the room and use both your dead worms stuffed with chemicals in the message tube.

- Go back to the elevator by reception and into the room on the opposite side to the ones with the red and blue tubes. The purple guy will be working on the mail machine inside.

- Walk up to him and go through the dialogue options until you can ask him how he got in there. This will unlock a trophy on ending the conversation.

- Trophy: "I squeezed down one of these tubes, like a pixie!" (B) Unlocked.

[spoiler=grimf7]

- Go through all the other dialogue options you wish and when you finish the conversation you will automatically run and grab the fire extinguisher.

- Interact with the door to lock the open door.

- Leave the room and the maintenance guy will think the door is secure.

- Go back inside and enter the small room the purple guy was in.

- Use your hole punched playing card on the red tube to Manny's right to intercept a message and get a new client.

- After the cutscene you will be straight into a conversation with Meche. Work through all the dialogue options to try to find something she did which was bad. Eventually she will say she could do something now if it helps. This will unlock the trophy after the conversation ends.

- Trophy: "Well, I could do something bad right now if that would help" (B) Unlocked.

[spoiler=grimf6]

- Finish the conversation and exit your office. Walk towards Eva in the reception area and you will be confronted by Don.

- After the cutscene you will be locked in Glottis’ hut in the garage.

- Knock on the door and dialogue will start with a mysterious soul. Work through the options until you get taken to the underground hideout of the Lost Souls Alliance.

- Once in control of Manny again, talk to Sal. Ask him if he knows something you don’t, and this will trigger the next dialogue trophy.

- Trophy: "Precisamente, amigo". (B) Unlocked.

[spoiler=grimf8]

- Go through all the dialogue to be given a new task.

- Speak to Eva and ask her if she has any new messages for you, then work through the rest of the dialog.

- Trophy: "Join or Die! Again!" (B) Unlocked.

[spoiler=grimf9]

- Exit the underground lair and climb the rope up to the office again.

- Walk around the corner of the ledge until you get to Dom's office. Climb inside.

- Go to his PC and guess the password. Repeat this 3 more times until you hear Manny say "Arrogant fraud doesn't work". this will unlock the trophy.

- Trophy: "'ARROGANT FRAUD' doesn't work". (S) Unlocked.

[spoiler=grimf10]

- Walk round to the punch bag and hit it 3 times, this will make a mouthguard drop on the floor. Pick this up.

- Walk round to the desk and open the drawer. Pick up the chunk of coral inside.

- Go back outside to the window ledge and walk back to the rope. Interact with the rope to pull it up on to the ledge.

- Use your new chunk of coral with the rope to tie it to the end and throw it towards the ladder opposite you.

- Climb the rope and follow the ledge to the ladder. Climb this to find yourself on the roof.

- Walk closer to the pigeons and get out your Robert Frost balloon. Use it on the pigeons until your hear Manny say a phrase about running away.

- Trophy: "Run you pigeons! It's Robert Frost!" (B) Unlocked.

[spoiler=grimf11]

- On the roof, you will see a bowl shaped ventilation shaft, use the cat balloon and then the bread stick on the bowl. This will scare away the pigeons.

- Go over to where the pigeons were and steal the eggs.

- Climb all the way back down the rope to ground level, then enter the garage near where the rope meets the floor.

- Go all the way to the back and head inside Glottis' hut.

- Use your blue mouthguard on the filling machine inside the hut.

- Now have Manny bite the mouthguard creating a perfect impression of his teeth.

- Go back outside the garage, and interact with the blue eye on the wall to get back to the underground hideout.

- Give the pigeon eggs to Sal, and then give your impression of your teeth to Eva to start a cutscene.

You will be transported next to the edge of the Petrified Forest!

- Once the cutscene finishes, you will be at the edge of the Petrified Forest. Walk to the right to start a conversation with Glottis.

- He will throw his heart and spiders will take it away. Head north to where the heart landed to see it in a spiders web.

- Walk up to the web, and you will see a pile of bones to the right hand side of it. Pick up a bone, and use it in the web.

- Then get out your scythe and use it on the web as well.

- Go back to Glottis, pick up his heart and place it back inside his body. Doing this will trigger another cutscene.

- When you are back in control, you will be driving the car, drive to the right to find yourself in a tree farm.

- When you regain control of Manny, walk straight up to Glottis and ask him what is happening to the trees. This will unlock the next dialogue trophy.

- Trophy: "The marrow of these trees, Manny, they suck it out, it’s like cement!" (B) Unlocked.

[spoiler=grimf12]

- Now the next part is a puzzle which can be frustrating. The idea is to use the wheelbarrow to block one of the 4 pipes on the ground which leads to a relevant pump on the machine in the background. When you block a pipe, it stops one of the pistons moving. When you move the wheelbarrow off the pip the piston starts again. You have to release each piston at the correct time so that the 2 on the left are synchronised but opposite to the 2 on the right, which also need to be synchronised. This will cause it to shake, thereby you know you have done it. I found it easier to reverse off the pipes as there is less of a delay when trying to synchronise then. The video shows the solution.

[spoiler=grimf13]

- Once you have the machine synchronised, pull the lever to the left to have Glottis climb to the top to add weight. Once he is at the top, hit the level again to see it come spinning down and earn yourself some new shocks.

- Once you are back in the car drive to the middle then jump out. Go and grab the sign in the bottom right and carry it through to the top left area. As the sign can be a little difficult to see it's location is shown in the spoiler.

[spoiler=grimfsign]http://i.imgur.com/sw1uNvy.png

- You now need to place the signpost in the ground somewhere, and follow the direction it points to. Once you move a bit in that direction, put the sign into the ground again and repeat this until you have discovered the underground cave.

- Go down the ramp and follow the path right until you get to the signpost in the bottom right hand corner of the area. Interact with the sign to get a key.

- Leave this area and make your way back to the car with Glottis in. Drive to the top right exit and get out of the car.

- Walk towards the fence and go through the door, you will be sent packing straight back out again.

- Go back inside the door you just came out of and walk towards the bones on the floor. Get close enough so that you can grab a bone without being chased off.

- Walk down the left hand path and you will get to a dirty looking pool of water. Throw the bone into the water and immediately get out your fire extinguisher from your inventory.

- When the fire beaver walks to the lip above you and roars, use your fire extinguisher.

- This should be timed right so that the beaver passes through the foam and gets put out.

- Go back and collect another bone and repeat this process for all 3 fire beavers.

- Walk back outside and interact with the lock to the left hand side of the door to start another cut scene.

- When you are back in control of Manny, walk up the stairs and follow the path to the diner.

- Once inside, talk to Celso about everything, including asking him about work, this will unlock the next dialogue trophy.

- Trophy: "We only have one mop". (B) Unlocked.

[spoiler=grimf14]

- After talking to Celso, exit the diner and go down the stairs, then turn left into the foggy area.

- Once you're back on dry land, go and speak with your saviour near Glottis.

- Talk with Velasco and go through all the dialogue options until you can ask him what is under his eye patch. This is the trigger for the next dialogue trophy.

- Trophy: "...Used to scream like a banshee when the trade wind blew…" (B) Unlocked.

[spoiler=grimf15]

- Take out your photo and show it to Velasco, you will get a log.

- Return the log to Celso.

This will trigger the end of Year One, that's about a quarter of the way though!

Trophy: "Year 1" (S) Unlocked.

- You will be in the basement. Get on the forklift truck and drive forwards into the lift.

- Park up facing the exit near the red button.

- Hop off the forklift truck and press the red button. Quickly get back on the forklift truck and drive it forwards so that the prongs go through the right hand gap at the bottom of the fence and make the elevator halt.

- Get off the forklift truck again and go around to the other side of it to pull the lever near the prongs.

- Leave the elevator and walk down the long corridor to the end. Pick up the suitcase you see on Manny's left.

- From here you should make your way back down the stairs, outside and back to the round area with paths shooting off from it.

- From there head north again to the Blue Casket.

- Go to the back, and through the doors to the left or the area, into the kitchen.

- After the short scene, use the turkey baster in your inventory on the dirty sink to fill it up.

- Leave the Blue Casket and go back to the round area with paths shooting off from it.

- Go south and before you cross the small bridge to the cat track you will see a train track on the floor.

- Follow it south.

- At the end of the pier keep walking and you will go down some short stairs to a new area. Enter the building at the end to see a tattooist.

- Walk around the tattooist and open up his fridge, then interact with the drawer inside the fridge.

- Walk back around Naranja to where he is taking sips from a drink on the side. When he is looking away, use the turkey baster with horrible liquid in it on his drink bottle. This took me a few tries with timing, but you will get there eventually.

- Once Naranja is knocked out, take the dog tags from his sleeping body.

- Leave this area and go back to the race track building across the small bridge, to the right of the garage. Go upstairs to the security area.

- Take out the gold flecked bottle of booze and take another sip.

- Try to walk through the metal detector.

- When you are in the back room and Carla is talking to you, do not choose any of the dialogue options until the end when Carla starts crying. Then if you choose the option about letting you hold the metal detector while she is crying, it will unlock the next dialogue trophy.

- Trophy: "Here, let me hold that metal detector for you while you cry…" (B) Unlocked.

- Go down from security, then down again until you see the people at the race track. Go to the right hand side, this is where the big cat display is.

- Go through the door on the right to where the giant cat food tins are.

- Walk out on to the metal walkway in the centre and whip out your scythe.

- When you hear a beeping noise reach its loudest, you should be near enough to use your scythe to hook up the metal detector. If you don’t want to use the sound to locate it, a couple of minutes trial and error and you will get it.

- Leave this area and go back to the round area with the paths shooting off from it. Head to the Blue Casket, and get in the lift to the left hand side.

- Instead of going up the stairs to the left, go straight down the steps.

- In this new area, go straight down the stairs and immediately left and through the blue/green doors to meet Membrillo the Mortician. Talk to him about why he is still here to unlock the next dialogue trophy.

- Trophy "Manny, we've given up. All of us". (B) Unlocked.

[spoiler=grimf29]

- Throw the dog tags in your inventory on to the corpse to the left, then hand Membrillo your metal detector.

- Wait until Membrillo makes a call to the guy at the docks then leave this area, and head back to the Blue Casket by going down the elevator.

- In the main bar area you will see 3 people sitting at a table with a red book on it, in the bottom right of the room.

- Approach these and show them the letter from Sal that you have. Now ask them for the red book on the table and they will gladly let you have it.

- Leave the Blue Casket and head over to the area where the Bees are. Give them the red book you have just picked up to start a cutscene.

- After the scene head back to Toto the tattooists, where you got the dog tags off Naranja and hand the scrap of paper you have been holding to Toto who will be on the phone.

- Use your ticket printing machine that you have been carrying and create a ticket for Week 2, Tuesday, Race 6.

- Go back to the racetrack and go up the stairs. Go up again until you reach the point where you can carry on to security or go right to the VIP lounge. Walk around to the right to the balcony, then keep going right to get to the booth. Take out your betting ticket and interact with the booth to call the attendant out.

- Go back around the stairs and take the corridor to the VIP lounge. Virago will be sitting at one of the tables again.

- Show him the picture you have just received from the ticket booth.

- After the scene ends, head back to the elevator to get to the Blue Casket, then follow the path over to where the Bees are.

- They will be chanting a song, all you have to do is press :cross: in time and chant along all the way through. If you are in time, they will start chanting about Manny, keep chanting with them and you will unlock the next trophy.

- Trophy: "ME, ME, ME-ME-ME!" (B) Unlocked

[spoiler=grimf30]

- Head over to the elevator next to the Blue Casket and go all the way back to Manny's cafe.

- Once inside, go up the stairs to the right of reception back to Manny's office.

- Interact with the desk to reveal the roulette board.

- This will finish year 2 and begin your 3rd year.

- Trophy "Year 2" (S) Unlocked.

Year 3

- Save your game

- Once you're in control of Manny on the boat, go inside and down the ladder on the left hand side.

- Walk down the corridor and you will end up in a small room with Glottis.

- Use the red buttons on the sides of the room to raise the anchors.

- Now drop the left hand side anchor by pressing the red button on the left again.

- Go over to the levers on the left of the room and interact with them. Choose the right arrow to move the ship.

- Exit and go over to the red button on the right hand side and drop the right anchor.

- Press it again to lift up the anchor, which will have caught the other sides anchor as well.

- You may have to use the opposite arrow to move the ship, depending on where it starts but the idea is quite simple, drop one sides anchor, move the boat to the other side then drop the opposite anchor so they cross and you can lift them with the second anchor.

- Go to the round window and use your scythe on the anchors to link it over the window.

- Go to the left hand side red button and press it to draw in the anchor.

- Go to the levers and press it down to break away from the other half of the boat for a cutscene.

- Save your game.

- Walk towards the light to get a warning from Glottis, then wait around until you see a creature with a light walks by.

- Start talking to him when he comes close and talk to him about everything, especially asking him how long he has been down there. This will unlock your next dialogue trophy.

- Trophy "I wasn't always this color!" (B) Unlocked.

[spoiler=grimf31]

- Let him carry on his loop after talking to him. When he is at the right hand side, grab his light, then turn and interact with Glottis so he will pick him up.

- In the next area, head to the far right to see a rock sticking up with some tendrils flowing out of it. Walk around the right hand side and Chepito will follow and get stuck, allowing you to move on to the next area.

- When you arrive, head straight forward into an elevator. Once you reach the top, go to the right and follow the path for a cutscene with Meche.

- You will wake up next to a cage with 2 little people in it.

- Speak to them and tell them you will sue their parents to unlock another dialogue trophy.

- Trophy: "*sniff* *sniff*" (B) Unlocked.

[spoiler=grimf33]

- Finish all the dialogue options to get one of the kids to throw a hammer on the floor.

- Pick up the hammer, then make you way back to Meche's office.

- Talk to Meche and try to explain things to her, she will reply with "save your breath", unlocking the next dialogue trophy.

- Trophy: "Save your breath…" (B) Unlocked.

[spoiler=grimf34]

- Now you need to interact with the ashtray at the right time so that Meche flicks her cigarette onto her stockings. Keep interacting with the ashtray as different times and you will get it right by trial and error after a couple of tries.

- Pick her stockings up from the bin then leave the office back to the elevator.

- Once you get out of the lift go to the bottom left of the area to see Chepito at the bottom.

- Go through all the dialogue and ask him about trading booty, eventually you will get him to talk about his bust-all, which will unlock the next dialogue trophy.

- Trophy: "IT'S A BUST-ALL!" (B) Unlocked.

[spoiler=grimf35]

- Give him the hammer you picked up and then give him the stockings and you will receive some items in exchange.

- Head back to the lift area and go towards to 2 lights over on the right hand side to lead to a new area with a conveyor belt.

- Pull the lever to change the direction of the belt and the jump up on to it. Run up the belt above the water to the left.

- Go up the stairs on the left to gain control of the crane. Move the crane to the other side of the island.

- Lower the crane to see a new area.

- Run down on to the beach and use you bust-all on the large chain.

- Go back up the stairs to take control of the crane again and lower the chain into the grinder below, then lift it back up again.

- Move the crane back round again to the other side of the island and lower the chain so it lands on the conveyor belt.

- Get off the crane and run back down the conveyor belt and jump off near the lever.

- Pull the lever to change direction of the belt, this will pull the chain down.

- Pull the lever again to bunch the chain up, then again so it catches on the anchor.

- Jump back on the conveyor belt and run up it to the crane. Pull the chain up to bring Glottis and the boat back up to the surface.

- Get back on the crane and move it round the island, then run down the belt and jump off near the lever.

- Go back to the elevator and take it up, then go back to Meche. Go past her into Dom's office.

- Talk to him about everything, including asking about his plan. This will unlock the next dialogue trophy.

- Trophy: "Okay, how much of the haven't you figured out, Calavera?" (S) Unlocked.

[spoiler=grimf36]

- Go back to Meche and use your gun on her.

- Once the cutscene ends, leave the offices and in the corridor you will see a door with a wheel and you will hear Meche shouting.

- Use the bust-all on the right side of the door to see the next puzzle.

- The idea here is to spin the bolts so that it leaves a clear gap between them and the edge. You have to alternate spinning them left and right to get them to line up. Once they have been lined up, use your scythe the fit between them and use the door handle to open it up.

[spoiler=grimf37]

- Once you are inside, shut the door behind you and use your scythe on the gold pipe at the top of the door.

- Go through into the next room and use your scythe on the sprinkler in the middle of the ceiling.

- Next use the small wheel on the right hand side to drain the water, and keep an eye on what tile the water drains through.

- Go back through to the first room and run over to the left. You will see a massive axe on the floor, pick it up and drag it over to the tile that the water drained out of near Meche.

- Interact with the axe over the tile to create a hole you can climb out of.

- After the cutscene, take out your scythe and use it on Domino. Keep doing this until the trophy pops. It must have taken me nearly 10 times before it popped.

- Trophy: "Stop showing off for the girl!" (B) Unlocked.

[spoiler=grimf39]

- Use your scythe on the sea monsters eye to start the next cutscene and also net you the trophy for the end of Year 3.

- Trophy: "Year 3" (S) Unlocked.

- Leave the room, go past Glottis and climb the ladder on the wall.

- Climb the ladder at the back of this area as well to reach the backstage of the casino.

- Grab the coffee pot from the table, and then walk over to the ladder to the left of the performers. You will have to interact with it to get to the top.

- Pour the coffee on to the performers heads to make them leave, then climb back down the ladder.

- Put the coffee pot back on its stand, then go into the door on the right to get changed for the show.

- It's worth making a save now in case this bit goes wrong.

- Go back up the stairs then climb the ladder to the left and take out the bone hand from your inventory, then interact with the snow grinder to the left. If you use the snow grinder without the bone hand it will glitch and you won’t be able to pick the grinder up and have to reload a save.

I hope this guide serves to help some people either get through sections where they are stuck or for people to follow completely to get a quick and easy (P).

I would like to say I recommend anyone playing to go through at their own pace and figure out everything for themselves as it really is a fun game with some great humour.

This has been designed just for people to follow for a straight path to the (P).

As this is my first guide I would appreciate any feedback, and any recommendations that get included will be credited accordingly.

Lovely guide, thank you so much :dance:

Edit: When I tried to finish Year 2, operating the Magnet did nothing. Turned out at the point where the Mortician identifies the Corpse you have to wait until he makes a call to the guy at the Docks.

I see some people saying the (P) takes 11-15 hours, while some say they've done it in about 5 hours or less. If I follow this guide, is the (P) doable in 5 hours?

I think so yes but you probably wouldn't take much of the story in. But if you just wanted a quick plat you could skip the dialog and finish pretty quick.

It's hard for me to say accurately though as I spent a lot longer obviously writing whilst playing.

Psnprofiles shows a handful of ppl getting sub 5, and a lot getting sub 10.

Good work on that guide, Pumper. Missed that game back in the 90's. Read somewhere that a few puzzles are a bit illogical. Well what would you expect from a LucasArts/Tim Schafer game... Reminds me of Monkey Islands "use rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle with door that doesn't seem to work"...

As I'm a scientific thinking person, your guide will surely come in handy!

I'm really struggling at the end of year 2, I've followed the guide exactly but when I operate the magnet it doesn't trigger any cutscene and the chief just leaves the cafe?

I've been running around for ages but I've no idea what I've done wrong.

Hi, sorry to hear that...someone else had a problem, see below:

I'll check it out and update the walkthrough accordingly...hope this helps.

Thanks for this walkthrough mate, sterling effort and everything went perfect :bow:

I made the mistake of picking up the bone grinder before saving, so I panicked as it wouldn't pick up and I hadn't saved since the start of the ep. But you can pick it up with :circle: (:cross: doesn't work like you said), so maybe worth mentioning.
