Introduction

Welcome to Life is Strange, the new episodic series from Dontnod, the developers of Remember Me. In the game you play as Max, a young female photography student who returns to attend a prestigious school in her Pacific Northwest home town of Arcadia Bay and soon discovers she can mysteriously rewind time. After saving her friend Chloe from a grim fate, she finds herself exposed to the darker side of Arcadia Bay as she begins to uncover the disturbing truth behind the mysterious disappearance of a fellow student.

As you play through the game you make choices which have consequences that can alter the events in the story, however this time around you have the ability to rewind time to alter how short-term events unfold depending on the choices you make, while the longer term consequences remain unknown.

The story is told in the episodic style of popular Telltale games such as The Wolf Among Us and The Walking Dead (without the associated QTE), with a touch of Heavy Rain, influences from the Twin Peaks TV show, and a good dose of the Remember Me memory remix mechanic added in. This makes for a very enjoyable experience and the game is lots of fun to play. The game does touch on some sensitive social issues such as suicide and online bullying, and may be upsetting to some who have experienced these situations themselves, however the developer has taken care to ensure that these subjects are presented as part of the story narrative in an appropriate manner.

Each episode contains collectibles in the form of 10 optional photos that can be taken to earn trophies. These are quite easy to find if you spend a bit of time exploring the various areas in the game, but if you do miss some you can replay any chapter in Collectible Mode, a special chapter select option that allows you to replay parts of a chapter and take the optional pictures without any of your decisions having an impact on your main game save. Your in-game journal shows images for each missing photo that will give you a hint regarding what to look for, and the trophy guide has images of all photo locations.

Walkthrough:

The game is very straightforward and achieving 100% requires minimal effort.

Step 1: Play each episode to completion, looking for optional photo locations along the way.

Step 2: Use Collectible Mode to collect any missed optional photos.

Nice guide. Definitely missed a couple photos. But wanted to play through it first. Also thanks for the help in the other thread. Really enjoying Life is Strange. Though it was funny with the Final Fantasy spirits within Easter egg lol. I uploaded that shameful scene to my YouTube channel lol.

Edit: Just completed episode 1. I think Telltale may have some competition. Cause I loved every moment of It.

I'm looking at getting the season pass tomorrow so your guide has come at a good time. :)

Edit: Just completed episode 1. I think Telltale may have some competition. Cause I loved every moment of It.

I've read the "Life Is Strange" 5 episodes are due out over a 6 week period. That's one think they're doing better than Telltale, which take 6-8 months for each series to fully release.

Thanks, I found that FF egg as well. Did you notice the one for The Shining? Several Twin Peaks references as well. Very good game, I think they're definitely giving Telltale a run for their money.

I've read the "Life Is Strange" 5 episodes are due out over a 6 week period.

It's supposed to be 6 weeks between each episode, so it'll still be around 6 more months before it's all done.

Nice one swotam.

Thanks, it was pretty easy to find most of them, you shouldn't have any trouble.

Thanks for the awesome guide, I will use it after I enjoy my normal playthrough first

Thanks, appreciate it.

I never watched twin peaks so didn't get the references. What is the shining Easter egg? May consider just making my Easter egg videos I uploaded private. Getting views but getting a lot of a dislikes. Maybe I don't have the steel skin for YouTube lol.

On topic love the collectible mode in this game. Making it painless to get the photos I missed.

Edit: At the end of the episode where [spoiler=twin] Max was thrown out of time again into the future.

I did say this is some twin peaks shit. Especially when I saw [spoiler=tornaod] the tornado and picked up the newspaper and read the date on it.

What is the shining Easter egg?

It's from the 1980 Kubrick film The Shining, which was based on a 1977 Stephen King novel.

Redrum (read it backwards) and Room 217 are both referenced to the film. If you read the slate Max will make a comment.

Thanks a lot for the guide, swotam! I only missed a couple of the photos, and this definitely helps! :D

Just to clarify and lend some background, the famous "haunted" room in Stanley Kubrick's film adaptation of The Shining is room #237, but it was actually #217 in the original book. The management of the Timberline hotel (in real life) had requested Kubrick change the room number for the film because they figured guests staying at the hotel would never want to rent out the room after seeing the film... As a very big fan of all things The Shining, I appreciate that the Life is Strange developers referenced the original source material in the game. :)

Good point, I missed that distinction but to be honest it's been years since I saw the movie or read the book, so...

So is this game all about taking photos and rewinding time? Is that all there is too it?

No, those are some of the game mechanics but there's a lot more to it than that, just like the Telltale games aren't all about walking around and finding stuff.

Life is Strange is an episodic series just like The Walking Dead or The Wolf Among Us, so the story is the biggest part of the game along with how you interact with the other characters and the choices you make. You can rewind time to change your immediate choices, but you still don't know how they will affect things long term, and you cannot rewind that far back so you still have to live with the result of your decisions whether you rewound or not.

The photos are basically collectibles, but they're optional if you're not interested in those.

Yeah, no worries... To be honest, I've never even read the book yet - I can't believe I still haven't yet! - so you've got one up on me there, haha.

I guess it all depends on how you look at it, but there's quite a lot of facets to Life is Strange. The game focuses on character and story development, in a way very similar to Telltale's episodic games, but it does do a number of things very differently as well, obviously including the style and more life-like subject matter.

Along with what swotam said, there's also Max's journal. It updates the story as it goes along (like a diary), and also acts as a collection of all you've come across throughout your playthrough, including photos you've taken, bio-like entries on the main characters you've met, and a lot of the random text-based stuff you've read and images you've looked at. It also includes Max's cellphone texts... Of course, the journal stuff only matters if you actually care to check it out. It's more of an optional inclusion, and not needed to progress in the game, but it's a welcome addition, like how The Wolf Among us added biographies on characters, locations and items.

I really recommend checking out the demo, if you think you're at all interested. I personally love the game, so far. :)
