Step 1: Complete the game without using shortcuts

A big part of the road to 100% in this game will be learning how the game works and adjusting to the fact that you're going to be dying a lot. There's a very steep learning curve, but each world will only take you five or ten minutes before you beat it or die, so you'll get plenty of practice in a short amount of time. Don't worry about the City of Gold or any specific requirements yet, just learn the traps, figure out which items you prefer and edge towards the end of the game.

Step 2: Work on your Journal and look for hidden characters

At this point, rather than jumping into the really tough stuff, I encourage you to explore a bit. Head through the game, looking for items and monsters you haven't found yet, and explore the hidden stages. The goal here is to get comfortable enough with the Mines and Jungle that you can focus on other things as you play. Make a point of getting to the Black Market whenever you can. If you can reliably get the Ankh out of the Black Market, it'll save you a lot of grief when it comes to the next step.

Step 3: Go to Hell, probably a couple times

It might help to think of this step in two parts, but really your goal is to beat the game the hard way now. Grab the necessary items for the City of Gold, beat Olmec and head into Hell. If you beat the game, amazing, but if you don't, just remember that you're going to need to kill or be killed by everything in Hell, so multiple visits are required anyway. If you make it to the City of Gold and you have a decent amount of money, or if you've been using the ghostrunning method for farming gold mentioned in the guide, you might want to go for Big Money, or you can save it for a separate playthrough.

Step 4: Speedlunky

At this point, aside from a few journal entries or hidden characters, all that will be left is the 8 minute speedrun. If you made it through Hell, you won't have to worry much about dying, so grab only the items that you absolutely need and start running.

Step 5: Cleanup if necessary

There's a good chance you haven't managed to find all 4 randomly generated coffins yet, so just keep playing until you do, and grab any other journal entries you still need for your well earned 100%.

A big thank you to the Spelunky Wiki for the lists and images, prozendaal and dcollins for the banner and headers, and to TheeSpecialGuys and Front Towards Gamer for the videos.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1988/E47.jpg Seen It All (S)

Complete 100% of the journal.

The journal consists of every world, secret level, item, trap and monster in the game, and you're going to need to visit, collect, kill or be killed by all of them in order to complete the journal. This probably means you'll be requiring multiple visits to the hardest areas of the game, including the last boss in Hell, so don't expect this trophy without mastering everything else in Spelunky first. You can find a list of all the journal entries here.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1988/88C.jpg Seen a Lot (B)

Complete 50% of the journal.

You'll likely unlock this trophy without trying by the time you reach the Temple world. For more information see Seen it All, and for a list of the journal entries, see this post.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1988/E74.jpg To Hell and Back (G)

Complete the game the hard way.

Completing the game the hard way means that in addition to defeating Olmec, you need to find and enter the secret door in his stage and complete the Hell world as well. In order to do this, you will need to reach the City of Gold without using shortcuts (as described in City of Gold) and find the Book of the Dead hidden within the City. The Book will reveal the secret entrance to Hell, but it will also spawn Anubis II, a powerful enemy that will follow you throughout the rest of the game until you kill him.

Once you reach Olmec's Lair, the Book will begin laughing, much in the same way the Udjat Eye blinked near the Black Market entrance. When the book is laughing very quickly, you're directly over the door to Hell. The goal is to have Olmec break through the blocks right where you're standing, so that once he falls in the lava you can stand on Olmec's head and walk through the door. If Olmec doesn't fall through into the lava in the right place, you won't be able to access the door.

Needless to say, Hell is the most challenging world in the game. There are new traps, the stages are very cramped, giving you very little room to move, and even the Damsels are potential enemies now. At the end of all this is King Yama, and enormous boss that will test even the most veteran Spelunky players. I've included a video of Jollygoodfellowz playing through and completing Hell to give you an idea of what to expect:

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1988/6C4.jpg Speedlunky (B)

Complete the game in under 8 minutes. No shortcuts.

This is going to be a pain, no matter how confident you are in your spelunking abilities. It's very easy to take anywhere between thirty seconds and a minute in the early stages, which means you're going to need a fair bit of luck to make up the time near the end of the game. This will be one of the few full game runs you'll do where you can skip the City of Gold requirements, which is great, but you won't have time to run around collecting gold for items, so just grab any jewels that are on the way to the exit, and check any crates nearby for bombs. Always carry something with you that you can throw through traps to avoid a careless death.

Highest on your priority list should be the compass, which is invaluable when trying to race through the game. If you happen across a jetpack, it'll make things a lot easier for you if you steal it, but it comes with the added risk of having to deal with angry shopkeepers for the rest of the game. Some people swear by the mattock, a pickaxe that can dig through levels, but it will eventually break and may not be worth the effort. Ultimately, play around with your setup, but with a dozen or so bombs and a compass, you'll have enough to get through the game, provided you don't get any really silly stage layouts. Keep trying, and know that the current record on XBLA is around 2:30, so 8 minutes is definitely doable.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1988/2DD.jpg Ironman (S)

Complete the game without using shortcuts.

If you're following the Roadmap for this game, this will be one of the first trophies you earn. You're going to need to get comfortable with beating the game without shortcuts in order to reach the City of Gold and Hell, so it's best to only rely on shortcuts for accessing secret levels or familiarizing yourself with a world's traps. If you die at any point before completing the game for the first time, simply restart from the beginning and try again. See Mines Shafted, Jungle Jammed, Ice Creamed and Made It for more information.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1988/9DA.jpgEternal Lifehttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Obtain the Ankh.

The Ankh is an item that acts as a second life, respawning you in the level you died in, rather than forcing you to start the game over with. Details on how to obtain the Ankh can be found in City of Gold. Keep in mind, for the trophy to unlock, I needed to purchase the Ankh for $50,000. Stealing it and escaping the Black Market didn't count for the trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1988/2BB.jpgCity of Goldhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Reach the City of Gold.

The City of Gold is a secret level found in stage 4-2. It contains an enormous amount of gold, as the name suggests, as well as the Book of the Dead, the final item needed to reach Hell. To reach the City of Gold, you will need an item from each of the game's four worlds. Each item is detailed below:

  • Udjat Eye: http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130707120734/spelunky/images/4/42/XBLA_Udjateye.png This item is found in the Mine world, hidden in a treasure chest with a gold lock. To open it, you will need to find a gold key in the same stage as the chest, and carry the key to the chest. The Udjat Eye shows the hidden locations of gems and other items in the ground, and it will also show the location of the Black Market.
  • Ankh: http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130707121259/spelunky/images/4/41/XBLA_Ankh.png This item is found in the Jungle world, in a hidden stage known as The Black Market. To find the Black Market, you'll need to scour each stage of the Jungle, watching the Udjat Eye in the corner of your screen. When the entrance is near, the Eye will begin to flash, and you will need to bomb the ground where it's flashing the quickest. Once inside the Black Market, the Ankh can be purchased for $50,000, or it can be stolen if you're quick enough or kill every shopkeeper beforehand.
  • Hedjet: http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130707121313/spelunky/images/a/aa/XBLA_Hedjet.png This item is found in one of the stages in the Ice Caves, and cannot be reached without possessing the Ankh first. When you find the stage that contains the Moai statue (see Ice Creamed for more info), deliberately kill yourself. You will respawn inside the statue, and the Hedjet will drop down from a ledge.
  • Scepter: http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130707121330/spelunky/images/1/15/XBLA_Sceptre.png This item is found in 4-1, and you must kill Anubis in order to get it. Fighting Anubis can be incredibly hectic, and killing him in the wrong area could result in the scepter falling into a pool of lava, resulting in you having to start this whole process again. If you have sticky bombs, you can easily kill him with two. The scepter can be used as a weapon, but it isn't advised, as it's very easy to accidentally kill yourself using it.

Once you have all four of these items, in stage 4-2 you will find a square gold door with a slot in it. Approach the door holding the scepter and hit L1 to enter the City of Gold.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1988/E1F.jpgBig Moneyhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Obtain 500000 gold.

As you'll quickly find out upon playing the game, half a million gold is an enormous amount, making this trophy one of the hardest in the game. You need to have 500,000 gold in your possession, so any supplies you need will eat away at your total unless you resort to stealing. Before even attempting this trophy, you're going to want to be familiar enough with the game that you can reach the Temple without much difficulty, and there's a good chance you won't have enough gold without playing through Hell as well.

You can make a decent amount of money stealing Golden Idols and scarabs in the darkened stages, but for the highest rewards, you're going to need to take much higher risks. The three biggest sources of gold are the City of Gold, beating King Yama in Hell and using the Ghost found in each stage to turn gems into diamonds. I'll quickly outline each method.

The City of Gold is a secret level found in 4-2, and you can see City of Gold to learn how to reach it. Once there, with enough bombs or if by some miracle you've brought the Plasma Cannon with you from the Mothership, you can basically rip the City of Gold apart and earn as much money as your ammunition will allow.

You can get almost half of the required half million by beating King Yama at the end of Hell. You'll receive $100,000 for beating him, and another $128,000 for destroying and collecting the parts of his throne. Keep in mind, only the best of the best will be able to consistently beat Yama, so unless you're insanely good at Spelunky, this probably isn't a viable option.

Finally, and perhaps most safely, you can use the Ghost that arrives when you take too long in a level to earn a massive amount of gold. The Ghost is very big and will insta-kill you if he touches you, but if you are quick enough, you can lead him around the stage, and any gem he touches turns into a diamond, which are incredibly valuable. To maximize this strategy, lead the ghost through any treasure room (the walled off areas with chests guarded by a shopkeeper) you can find. If you can use this method consistently through the game's four main stages, a trip to the City of Gold will more than likely net you enough money to avoid going to Hell.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1988/A19.jpgMade Ithttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Complete the game.

You'll unlock this trophy by completing the four stages of the Temple and beating the boss found in stage 4-4. This trophy will unlock either by completing the game from the beginning or by using any of the game's shortcuts.

In short, the Temple sucks. If you weren't able to get here with a ton of bombs, a shotgun and a jetpack, it's incredibly easy to get stuck in an area where every way out is guaranteed death. Mummies, Crush Traps and Anubis will be your main causes for concern, but don't, for example, hang around lava pits for too long, because all it takes to ruin a full game run is for a Magma Man to spawn and knock your fully equipped character into the lava, killing you before you have a chance to realize what happened.

Speaking of Anubis, the final step to reaching the City of Gold is killing him and taking his scepter. Anubis is always found in 4-1, and you'll probably see the purple orbs that can travel through walls, killing you instantly before you see him. If you have sticky bombs, it'll only take a couple to kill him and earn his scepter. One thing to keep in mind, the scepter is an incredibly powerful weapon, but it's also pretty volatile, and it's killed me more than once while using it. See City of Gold for more.

The final challenge for this trophy is Olmec, a boss reminiscent of Bowser in Super Mario Bros. 3, if you didn't just start gaming recently. There are a couple different strategies for Olmec, depending on how well equipped you are, but both are fairly straightforward, at least on paper. If you have a couple of ropes left, the simplest solution is to press yourself up against Olmec and running underneath him each time he stomps. This way, you'll always know where he's going to land and you won't have to worry about getting squished if your timing is good. The ropes are required to escape the pit Olmec creates once he's killed. Front Towards Gamer shows off this strategy on YouTube:

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgG19e059eI]FTG Gameguide: Spelunky: How to Defeat Olmec for the "Made It" Achievement! - YouTube[/ame]

A second strategy, if you're well stocked on bombs and trying to make it to Hell, is to lure Olmec to the far left side of the stage, run under him and then use your bombs to blow a hole all the way to the bottom wherever you need to. If you have a jetpack this will be even easier, allowing you to fly out of the whole you're making and fight enemies as needed. Olmec won't bother you until you head back over to him, where you can then lure him into the hole you've created and kill him with a single jump. Once Olmec is dead, you can head to the right and go through the door for your ending and the trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1988/8DB.jpgIce Creamedhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Reach the Temple.

You'll unlock this trophy by completing the four stages that make up the Ice Caves, either starting from the beginning of the game or using one of the previous shortcuts. The Ice Caves actually aren't nearly as difficult as the Jungle if you're equipped with a jetpack or well stocked with ropes, but each stage consists of small platforms over a bottomless pit, so getting stunned by an enemy or climbing down to the wrong platform without a way back up will quicky end your run.

If you're working on completing your Journal, stage 3-4 will always contain the entrance to the Mothership, but it's best to avoid this area when doing a full game playthrough, as the Mothership is one of the hardest areas in the game.

If you're working on getting to the City of Gold or Hell this playthrough, make sure you keep an eye out for the Moai statue in the early stages of the Ice Caves:

http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130730232427/spelunky/images/thumb/9/9f/Moaistatue.png/180px-Moaistatue.png

Once you find it, you'll need to die in this stage, thus using the Ankh and teleporting you inside the Moai. You'll receive the Hedjet, one of two items you'll need to open the door to the City of Gold.

Upon completing the Ice Caves, you'll meet the Tunnel Man for the third and final time. In order for him to create a shortcut to the Temple, you'll need to give him three ropes, three bombs and the gold key from the Mines.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1988/C08.jpgJungle Jammedhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Reach the Ice Caves.

You'll unlock this trophy by completing the four stages that take place in the Jungle, either from playing the game from the beginning or starting from the Jungle shortcut. Hazards like the Tiki Trap and Tiki Man can end a perfect run in seconds, and some of the random layouts will require you to burn through most of your items to complete. There are also special themed levels, and the ones found in the Jungle can be particularly difficult. Just know that if you find yourself in a pitch black level getting pelted with boomerangs, you aren't far enough into the game where restarting is a bad idea.

Most of my failed runs ended in the Jungle, so it may be a good idea to use the shortcut you created after the Mines to familiarize yourself with the world's hazards.

While playing through the Jungle, if you're working towards completing the Journal, keep an eye out for the entrances to the Haunted Castle and Worm levels. Check Seen it All for more info.

If you're working on getting to the City of Gold or Hell in this playthrough, the Jungle is the home of the Black Market, which is the only place to find the Ankh. See City of Gold or Eternal Life for more info. By the time you've completed the Black Market, you'll want to have a few dozen bombs, paste, a jetpack and a shotgun, or any other similar combination of weapons. You won't really have any other opportunities to stock up after the Jungle, and you'll need everything you can carry for the final world.

Upon completing the Jungle, you'll meed the Tunnel Man for the second time. Giving him two ropes, two bombs and a shotgun on three separate occasions will open a shortcut to the Ice Caves.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1988/223.jpgMines Shaftedhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Reach the Jungle.

You'll unlock this by completing the four stages that take place in the Mine. The Mine is the most straightforward of Spelunky's five worlds, and shouldn't take you long to get the hang of it. This is the world where you're going to want to start stockpiling hearts by saving damsels, as much money as possible and items like the compass and jetpack if you're lucky enough to come across one.

If you're planning on reaching the City of Gold or Hell, make sure you've used the gold key on the treasure chest to receive the Udjat Eye before arriving at the Jungle, or you'll need to start over again. See City of Gold for more info.

Upon completing the Mines, you'll meet the Tunnel Man for the first time. You will need to give him a bomb, a rope and $10,000 on three separate occasions before he'll create a shortcut to the Jungle, which will allow you to better familiarize yourself with the next world's hazards without having to start from the beginning.

  • 1 year later...

I was looking for something to play on ps4 while waiting on Unity and thought about this while it's still on :psn+: but the trophies look pretty annoying. There have only been a couple indies I enjoyed and Dust was one if them so willing to give this a shot but wanted to see if you would recommend this for someone like me or probably better to pass? Either way, great job on the guide. It's very detailed and easy to follow.

It's a simple game to understand, but the trophy list is pretty brutal, imo. I find it to be incredibly addictive and enjoyable, though, so I'd absolutely recommend getting it while you still can, if you don't mind committing some time to mastering it. Think of it as the roguelike version of Demon's/Dark Souls, I guess.

You can easily beat the game in 8 minutes when you get good, like the trophy list suggests, so it's quite short, too.

Just finished my journal and I'd like to clear some things up.

As the guide says, you only need to kill OR be killed by, in order it to count as a journal entry. For some reason, my mental auto-correct had replaced that or with an and, so I was both killing and getting killed by all enemies. It also made a lot of sense, since the journal has two trackers: kills and killed by. So to avoid people making the same mistake I did, there's an easy rule to follow: as long as you have the journal page, you're all good.

This also means that you can get away with only two visits to Hell. On first visit, you need to kill every type of new enemy (Succubus, Imp, Devil), kill Vlad, pick-up Vlad's cape and dislodge the Vlad's amulet from the wall and pick it up also. Access the throne room and kill Yama and his two servants. The second visit, all you need to do is get killed by a spike ball.

Though, you'll highly likely get killed by the most stupidest things in Hell and require multiple visits, it's nice to know that the journal can be filled in only two visits.

Hi everybody.

Just completed the game today and wanted to add something to what Synophis said.

You don't need to be killed by a spike ball to get the journal entry. Just bomb the center block: the spike will fly through the level destroying everything (so don't be in its path) and you will get the entry.

That's what I did and in the journal, it said that this trap killed me 0 time.

So technically, one visit to hell can be sufficient.

Hi guys

I 100%'d this not long after it came out (I played the original 360 release and the steam version for many hours)

Is there anybody out there who would want an area by area, then misc. trophy video guide series?

I can do through all of the traps and enemies in the mines, followed by the jungle, ice caves, temple and hell, including tips and asides for getting to hell and the black market (and the two secret levels). Afterwards I could throw out a video on speed-running techniques and routes, and how to start killing shopkeepers on every run :)

I recently started playing again and thought I could share some tips, the only thing I haven't done is beat the game with 0 gold (which isn't a trophy in the psn version luckily!)

Hey Mendel I wanted to thank you for making this guide.Your "ghosting" strategy really helped me out and simplified what turned out to be the most difficult trophy for me to obtain.

I was wondering if you would be receptive to a "Beginner's Guide to Hell Runs" post that I was thinking about making. I love this game and I want to support new players in their attempts to beat it "the hard way." I got the 100% not too long ago but I was pretty consistent in getting to Hell, beating Yama at around my 500th try and I owe that to what I think to be a pretty solid strategy. Let me know what you think.
